Solitude Interrupted

Laken - When you grow up like I did, you aren't an open book. You guard your past, you don't give everyone your life story. Sounds easy enough especially since I just graduated college, moved to the wilds of West Virginia with my dog, and signed a contract for an eighteen month nursing job. The problem is my landlord, Cole. He doesn't get that I need to keep my distance. He jokes that I am on the run. Maybe I am. But this remoteness is what I need to put what happened in perspective, to put myself back together. I'm not running for the hills despite Cole's pursuit. I may just end up running into his arms.

Cole - When you co-own an outfitter that specializes in guiding white water rafters everyday is an adventure. The elusive, blond beauty who rented my neighboring, riverside cabin was not what I expected. My brother and friend gave her two nights before she couldn't take living out in the woods alone next to a relentless flirt who hadn't shaved in six months just to win a bet. She said she came here to figure her life out without any distractions, at least not the romantic kind. But I love a challenge, I'm a thrill seeker. She needs a little excitement and I'm more than determined to be the one who interrupts her solitude.

Funny, thoughtful, and heart wrenching - "Solitude Interrupted" is the unforgettable love story of a courageous girl who overcame so much and the reckless adventurer who couldn't turn away from her.

LJ Scar is my pseudonym and alter-ego. I'm a part-time writer, caregiver, old home renovator, wife and dog mom to a sweet Border Spaniel mix who I foster failed because I loved him too much to not adopt.

I write what I'd like to read, love stories that don't always have the ending you expect about people who seem real, get hurt and get back up! The characters get second chances, find love that lasts, and take the road less traveled. My book settings are always places I've lived, vacationed or renovated, and the romances are pure fiction. I'm an animal lover. All the dogs and cats in my books are based on the rescues who rescued me.

I'm the author and before you say to yourself, "She rated and reviewed her own book, kind of self serving isn't it?" Consider it from my rationale, if I as the author don't like it why should you?

Here is what I loved about "Solitude Interrupted":
Getting to write the first half of the book from Laken's POV and the second from both Cole's and her POV really allowed me to let the reader see both of their feelings.

Laken was at this point a young woman. She wanted a fresh start and despite her misgivings she took it. This to me is amazing. To be strong enough to throw caution to the wind says she knew she couldn't stay and let the past define her. She had to move on.

Cole was the type of guy I wish were depicted more often. A handsome, positive, happy-go-lucky, decent male who sees what he wants and pursues it without all the games and BS.

Kona, the best dog a girl could have.

Lastly, the location along the wild and adventuresome rivers of West Virginia. Rugged and romantic - a place anyone could fall in love. A perfect setting for a happily ever after.

Note this book and What happened in Between can be each read as stand alones, but if you're planning to read both I recommend What happened in Between to be read first.

Laken finished college and was determined to go somewhere she could find herself, that's what lead her to a remote cabin in West Virginia. She was offered a position she couldn't resist and the cabin was the only place that met her requirements, mainly cost and allowing her dog. She come there determined to put the past behind her and not allow her exs to sway her to them anymore. The last thing she expected was a romance with her landlord/neighbor, with his wildman looks from a beard that needed shaving 6 months ago.

Cole is a perfect gentleman, but with the relationships tainting her views she's not sure she can trust Cole or his intentions. As time passes and she finds peace in her new life, she learns how to open herself up to something real and good but can she completly put the past where it belonges?

Laken has found herself and her voice. She doesn't allow herself to be trampled on or for things to happen she's not ready for. She's stronger now than ever before and has learned grow into herself and be happy with who she is.

Cole is a protector, he's there for those he loves and is patient and kind to Laken, understanding her past hurts and knowing to go at her pace rather than trying to rush her. He's a sweetie, and I loved his character.

We've seen Laken at her lowest and now we see her rise from the past and the mistakes from it have made her into who she is today. Her story might not have been typical, but it shows that no matter what happens in life you'll always find your happiness if you are willing to open your eyes and look for it.

I picked this book up at a used book store because I was attracted to the idea of living in the mountains. I didn't realize it was a romance. The back cover has plenty of clues but I didn't catch on. After all, it doesn't have one of those sexy pictures on the front cover. Romance is one of the genres I don't have an appreciation for.

The book is self-published and needs an editor. The first sentence, "I tossed my internet directions to the floorboard returning to my highlighted map of West Virginia" is not a good start because of the dangling participle.

I'm no expert on what romance novels are supposed to be like but if a man I'd never even kissed said (when I was cold) "You want to generate some heat the old fashioned way?" I'd feel threatened that would be the end of it.

First of all, I love the title. I'm not sure why. It's just one of those titles that grabbed me.

The story centers around Laken, a woman in her early twenties. She takes a nursing job in a town away from home, where she rents a secluded little cabin in the woods. We are given the impression that she is running away from a difficult past. In reality, she just needs some time and distance to put everything into perspective.

Enter Cole, the hot, slightly older than her, bearded outdoorsman, and river-rafting guide. He just so happens to be her landlord and her one and only neighbor. Theirs is a love story that takes its time to blossom, making for a very endearing and believable tale.

Aside from Laken and Cole, there are a number of secondary characters throughout this story. I found each and every one of them to be very well-written, with different personalities and imperfections. They seemed so believable and so real, and I loved the various relationships between them all.

The majority of the story is told in first person by Laken. But about two thirds of the way through, it shifts. At this point we are reading, along with Cole, Laken's old journal. It's almost as if we're reading another story altogether, which is kind of cool. It's here where Cole learns the truths about her past. At this point we start to read the alternating first person perspectives of both Cole and Laken. I'm not usually a big fan of back and forth perspectives, but I have to say that the author did a very good job of it. At no time was I confused about who was speaking, and the story carried forward without a hitch.

My only complaint about this book is the awkward sentences. You know...the kind where you have to go back and reread a couple of times to grasp exactly what is being said. In most cases, I believe the confusion came from missing commas. And don't get me wrong - it's not as if the book is riddled with confusing sentences, because it isn't. But there were enough that I took notice. So maybe some extra editing would be helpful.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed Solitude Interrupted. It's a sweet story about a woman's journey to come to terms with her past and to find herself. And who can resist a story about two people finding each other and falling in love? I recommend it.

I knew from the first few pages that "Solitude Interrupted" was going to be a book that I really enjoyed. It ended up being a book that I couldn't put down.

In the Author's Notes, L.J. Scar says she likes to read "love stories that don't always have the ending you expect about people who are real, get hurt and get back up!" I think that perfectly describes this book.

The main characters, Laken and Cole, were both very real and believable. They seemed like people I knew. For some reason, I really liked that he took her to Dairy Queen (multiple times!) -- I thought that was a very "real life" type detail. This wasn't a love story all about extravagant gifts, over-the-top dates, etc. It was all very real.

I was somewhat familiar with the area where the book was set, having grown up not too far away. And I thought Scar's description was fantastic. It took the reader right there into West Virginia.

I liked the way that Laken's past was revealed in the journal she gave Cole. I thought that was a really different approach that worked extremely well. It was really easy to imagine Cole reading that journal and the thoughts that were going through his mind as he found out about Laken's past. I also liked that we got a little bit of Cole's perspective in the second half of the book.

The pacing of the book was great; it never felt like the story was slow or dragging. The "love square" (or Cole, Ian, Seth and Laken)was worked into the story perfectly, and so much of that really establishes who Laken is and why she is the way she is. It all unfolded perfectly.

From the "real life" characters to the fantastic description, I really enjoyed reading "Solitude Interrupted." This a definite must-read for fans of contemporary romance.

The story and concept of Solitude Interrupted were pretty unique and kept my attention the whole time. The dialogue flows and the characterization is great. This is what I liked most, that the characters are very well-drawn and there is a goodly dose of tension and the unexpected in the plot.
I loved the characters the second I met them. Laken is a sweet girl, but with a strong personality.
Chapter I starts with Laken Harrison and her dog Kona who goes to West Virginia, to a rental cabin where, Mosquitoes, gnats, and ticks can drive a person crazy.

Laken’s words are a first hint of the turmoil of her soul. “I tried to stay focused, forcing myself to be brave. I’d made my choice…to be alone.” The whole Part I is told in this main character’s POV. A real quest of self discovery for Laken and not only. Laken has escaped personal tragedy and has come to West Virginia to find courage and seek independence. She tells herself to expect nothing, especially not kindness, least of all from men.

Each one of the characters has such a wealth of personality and backstory, rich with depth and layers that the reader quickly becomes vested in each, as they are so real. It’s all about love, fear, loss, acceptance and a deeper, richer love that develops.

L J Scar is an author who delivers and elicits emotion from the reader with her Solitude Interrupted novel. She has a flair for allowing readers to experience the chemistry and the love between her characters, and you will always feel a connection to her story and characters. She manages in finding the perfect balance of emotion and steam.

L.J. Scar says she likes to read "love stories that don't always have the ending you expect about people who are real, get hurt and get back up!" It’s a perfect way to describe Solitude Interrupted.

Emotional coming of age

Solitude Interrupted was a well written emotional coming of age journey. There were times in the book that one couldn't read fast enough.

Cole knew she was the one as soon as he saw Laken. He treated her with kindness and patience. He was thoughtful and helped her feel loved and secured.
Laken didn't have a typical childhood or adolescence. She realized early on that the only person you can count in is yourself. She was a survivor in all aspects of her life. I loved the strength that this young woman showed.

The couple built a friendship first that helped strength their romantic relationship. I laughed when they laughed and cried when they cried.

The secondary characters were memorable and helped carry the story. Along with the characters the outdoor settings created helped set the mood of the book.

The story also contains a little suspense and mystery. I liked the way her past melted into her future. The twists were unexpected and kept me on the edge of my seat.

While I enjoyed the book I do wish it would have had an additional chapter . I could have read more about this couple.

I enjoyed reading this book. The setting, Summersville, WV, is what drew me into the book. Summersville is our favorite vacation destination. Overall the author does a nice job of presenting Summersville in authenticity. I enjoyed the characters as they developed in the story.

When I first decided to read this book I thought it wasn't going to be a mushy romance. Two chapters in, I kicked myself for getting hooked on a mushy romance novel. After finishing, I am corrected! I knew Laken had some sort of "secret" but the magnitude was beyond me.

This was an easy read and I thoroughly enjoyed the story, plot, twists, and ending.

Once again outstanding read

Characters are well developed and they are "real" people! One can identify with their life experiences! Plenty of adventure and the love triangle is indeed exciting!

Okay

Story line okay, but punctuation, grammar, some sentence structuring, and misspelled words are cause for embarrassment. For example, a diamond is measured by carats, not carrots. Try a new editor maybe.

***Four Stars***

I was given an ARC of "Solitude Interrupted" for an honest review, which starts directly after the events of "What Happened In Between" and is a continuation of Laken's journey. I couldn't wait to read more of Laken's story and wasn't disappointed by "Solitude Interrupted".

The book centres on Laken, after she's finished college and heads for West Virginia to mend her heart, and re-evaluate her life. What unfolds is a journey of self-discovery, not only for Laken, but the reader as well. A lot of plot points and loose ends from "What Happened In Between" are tied up in "Solitude Interrupted" and the reader begins to understand all that Laken has been through.

As an aside, I thought the author did an amazing job of examining what I term as the "intimate terrorism" of someone living in a terrible domestic situation, unprotected by people that should have protected her. Laken's character growth in "Solitude Interrupted" is phenomenal and the resolutions she comes to with her past (and people from her past) are believable.

Laken's self-discovery is helped, in no small part, due to the wonderful Cole Wales, her next door neighbor, landlord and love interest. Cole is a fantastic character and I loved the slow burn of their relationship.

Similarly, to WHIB, "Solitude Interrupted" is a dialogue driven book and L.J. Scar has an economical use of prose, that leaves events up to the reader for interpretation. The work is narrated mainly by Laken, but we also get Cole's point of view.

Overall, I'd like to thank L.J. Scar for entrusting me with another thought-provoking work. If you want a read that makes you think, I highly recommend both "What Happened In Between" and "Solitude Interrupted".

(Disclaimer -- I stopped doing star reviews b/c they make me stress. And then I stress about not giving star reviews...)

So, the first thing to know about SOLITUDE INTERRUPTED is that Cole is positively swoon-worthy. I kept picturing Ian Somherhalder with a scruffy beard and, although I'm not sure that's who the author envisioned, it certainly made him an enjoyable character for me! He's independent, funny and driven. He's also determined to befriend Laken, the MC, who moves into the cabin next door.

Laken is difficult to get to know at first. She has issues in her past that keep people at bay and she's pretty adamant about maintaining the status quo. There are allusions to her difficult past, but the reveal is well into the story and it means she pushes Cole away -- which was was difficult for me to reconcile at first. I could see why she liked him, but he was smitten with her and kept coming back, despite little to no encouragement. As more of Laken's past is revealed, her actions make sense and then I was rooting for them, but I would have liked to see a little more from Laken that would justify how much and why Cole liked her, other than she's his gorgeous, mysterious neighbor. I think this is more of a personal issue, though, than an issue with the story. I really liked Cole and Laken together, so I was impatient for more!

The setting, in the woods of West Virginia, is well described and I was definitely transported there. In fact, I wonder if there's anywhere nearby to go white-water rafting...and find a ruggedly handsome guide?

SOLITUDE INTERRUPTED is part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

This is a really good contemporary romance novel. Laken is a young woman who just moved to West Virginia to start a new nursing job. She moves into a remote cabin in a beautiful area. Her landlord, Cole, also owns an outfitter that does white water rafting trips. It's easy to tell Cole is attracted to her, but Laken has had a difficult past and is not sure if she's ready to be in a relationship.

For starters, I loved the setting. It was so scenic, but of course, it also reminded me of the movie, Deliverance. The book even pokes fun at that, and Cole has a t-shirt that reads: "Paddle faster, I hear banjos."

The characters in this story were realistic and easy to relate to, and I liked how we learned more about Laken's past by reading her diary from when she was a teenager. I really felt sorry for her; she came from a very dysfunctional family.

And I loved Cole. He is a genuinely decent guy who treats Laken the way she deserves to be treated. I much prefer nice guys over the controlling, alpha male that is often portrayed in romance novels.

And any book that has a dog in it should get extra bonus points!

I enjoyed reading this novel, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good romantic story.

I read LJ Scar’s book Solitude Interrupted in about two days. Taking it with me camping was the perfect backdrop to the setting of a Laken’s love story in a rustic cabin in West Virginia.

Laken, which is such a great name for a character, is trying to escape her former life, at least temporarily, while she focuses on herself and tries to figure out what she wants.

What is meant to be a time of reflection and solitude, get’s interrupted (hence the title) when she meets her very hot landlord, Cole.

You expect him to be the type of person who would look for convenience and based on his seasonal profession as a rafting guide not be the type of person that would be good for Laken while she is healing from a very emotional past.

Instead he takes you by surprise with his patience and upstanding chivalry while she takes her time slowly revealing what brought her to West Virginia all alone in the first place.

I found the character development very well done and I liked how when you read this book you can’t think of any other book like it. The story follows a formula, but in a way that it doesn’t come off as predictable.

I would highly recommend this book to those who love a well written romance.

To preface my review--the first book I read by LJ Scar I received in exchange for a honest review. That book was What Happened In Between. What Happened In Between and Solitude Interrupted are companion books but do not need to be read together. They are each a stand alone story.

I am not normally a Romance reader. It's just never been my thing. Having said that. I LOVED both of Scar's novels. I chose to read Solitude interrupted simply because I wanted more.

The characters feel natural. They are likable and relatable. They are funny and flawed and you genuinely enjoy them.

The story is believable and inspiring. Laken is a character that you actually like. She's a grown up and makes grown up decisions. Her world doesn't revolve around the male character. She is a fully developed individual with or without the male lead.

The relationships between all of the characters also feel natural. You never get the feeling that one of them would be better without the other.

If you enjoy romance novels you will love this one.

When I read a book for review, I don't pay attention to the editing or the proofreading. To me, the story is the most important thing. A great book isn't diminished by a missed comma or a few transposed letters. That said, I found this book to be a very good read. The heroine isn't the average romance novel heroine and this is not the average romance novel. This is an emotional journey that starts with a woman looking to start over. She just happens to run across a guy who knows when to hang in there and work it out. The big reveals happen throughout in a timely fashion that is used to push the story forward rather than for vanity's sake at the end.

In my opinion, as someone who reads for pleasure, reads for editing, and reads to escape whatever my day has brought me, I found this book compelling and smart. The light-hearted moments are balanced well with the emotional upturns. The characters are developed in a way that doesn't toss mountains of backstory out there in clumps to be climbed over. I am impressed with the book as a whole.

This was not my usual kind of book – one set in the wilderness, with characters who shun society in an elusive kind of way. Nature lovers, hikers, campers. Admission: I’ve never camped in my life other than in a Marriott. Okay, I had to stay in a Microtel a few times…

But Laken and Cole’s story touched me deeply with its personal integrity, the gradual development of a relationship between two people who are thrust together, geographically, even though one or neither of them is ready to develop a trust in another human being. It reminded me of a wildlife story, where a wild animal is asked to trust a human, and isn’t sure whether it’s safe or not. That’s Laken. What a beautiful job this author has done with this character’s development.

A slow, leisurely pace with exquisitely described settings, this story is as close to real life as one can get – vicariously. Well written and, for a change, featuring a non-aggressive hero who treats his woman the way we all want to be treated. Highly recommend.

Solitude Interrupted was a really enjoyable read. It’s a coming of age story and a romance but it’s also about the healing power of friendships in various forms. The main character, Laken, is an independent young woman who must overcome a difficult past in order to heal and create a future for herself. Her bravery was inspiring. The author skillfully alludes to Laken’s somewhat mysterious past without divulging the details until late in the story. It worked for me. I definitely wanted to keep reading and find out what had happened to traumatize Laken and to see if she could ultimately prevail and find happiness with the gorgeous and sweet river guide. The setting—mostly West Virginia—is a character too and I appreciated the descriptions of the natural surroundings, especially the riverfront cabin where she lives.

I started this book, then put it down when I got caught up in my own writing, editing & promoting. Once I returned to it, though, I think I read 80% of it in a little over a week. I read at lunch, at home while cooking, waiting in lines. The story is so touching - Laken takes a clinical job in a remote area and rents a remote cabin from Cole. We know she's a bit cagey about her past and has extremely strong bonds with her friends (and exes), but she can't quite commit fully to Cole. Or is it that he can't quite commit fully to her? When work separates them, they learn things that change the trajectory of their lives.
This book made me smile and made me cry (at work. I blamed it on my jalapeno bologna.) BTW - loved Kona the dog and that Laken drives an old Jeep. :)
If you are looking for a sweet love story with a touch of mystery, I recommend this book.

Loved this book!
Setting - rapid running rivers of West Virginia
Laken was leaving what she saw as regrets and mistakes behind.
Cole was a good guy who couldn't stop his curiosity or pursuit of the girl who unexpectantly became his next door neighbor.
The slow build on the romance, his pursuit, her reluctance just added to their chemistry. The diary in the middle from Laken's teenage years was heartwrenching. I love a happy ending and Solitude Interrupted had a great one!

Great continuation of What Happened In Between

Another 5 star rating for LJ Scar! I really enjoy her writing, the characters she brings to life and the real emotions we feel as the reader. Although I was hesitant in the beginning since it started a little slow, I quickly realized I would not be disappointed. If you have read What Happened In Between, then I totally recommend you continue Laken's story with Solitude Interrupted.
