In a post-apocalyptic “now” where ancient magic and technology collide, a wanderer must escape a vast concentration camp run by vampires.
In 1972, the secret and hidden creatures of the night threw off their centuries-long masquerade, sending the world on a new and apocalyptic course.
Twenty years later, humanity and civilisation survive in pockets, but in the New Mexico desert a consortium of vampires and their ghoul servants have converted a hydro-electricity plant and dam into a farm for human beings.
Our hero is Day, wanderer and survivor of a Nebraskan commune set up before the world went to Hell.
Trapped on the farm with the prospect of a slow and painful death feeding the terrible hunger of the ghouls' nocturnal masters, Day must overcome his own qualms about the savage he has become not only to survive and escape, but to free his love Kvelda and the thousands of other people trapped like cattle waiting to die.

So another post apocalyptic read for me - I love these types of tales - in this case I was intrigued to read this because I don't often read a book with a vampiric plot - I tend to find them exceedingly dull. Sorry twilight fans!
Anyway I digress - this was far from dull. In a world where supernatural creatures are at the top of the food chain and some humans are kept on "cattle farms" with only a slow painful death in their future, Our protagonist, Day, must somehow find the will and the means to escape this fate - and hopefully save others from the same.
There is a somewhat slow start to this book, it is one of those that you have to stick with for a while before it "kicks in" and becomes more of a page turner, once it does however it becomes thoroughly enjoyable.
Characterisation is good and the world building is clever, if nothing new. Overall I would rate this as one of my "popcorn" reads - A fast and satisfying peek into another world.
