it's awesome that the words are broken down to their syllables for the listener to enunciate when prompted. New words and sentences are carefully broken down. Prompting the listener to respond to the dialogue and questions presented definitely helps in the way of getting used to conversation when there is no one to practice with. Because the focus is so heavily on speaking this method is probably really best used for people who are planning a trip to Japan or having relatives come over or something. On the flip side it is not good for someone who is trying to compose emails for business or school or just chatting with random people on the internet.
Super helpful for those who just want to learn conversational Japanese for travel. Easy to commit to the 30-minute daily lessons. I'll keep going with it!
Some time ago I listened to the Michel Thomas Beginner Japanese Lessons 1-6 and now I tried part 1 of the Pimsleur course. Both follow a very similar method but differ slightly from each other in detail.
Here are my findings ...
Michel Thomas: + I like that they explain just a little bit of grammar right away. Particles words, -imas ending, koko/doko/asoko, ... . That basic knowledge makes it much easier to retain and apply what I learned. + mnemonic aid - The simulated students are more distracting than helpful. - I found the presented content is less relevant/interesting compared to Pimsleur.
Pimsleur: + I especially like the frequency (algorithm) of repetition. This is very well done and perfectly supports the learning process. I really have the feeling that I learned a lot in that short time. + interesting content (like expressing my skill level, that I don´t understand sth, etc) - no explanation of basic grammar (see above)
Conclusion: Both courses are very good and follow a similar approach. I would recommend to listen to the first course of both and then decide which one feels better. Also switching is an option just to get the benefits of both and for the sake of variety.
I loved the method this Audio Book does in training you to remember and learn Japanese. I doesn't focus on remembering single words or how the grammar works. It just train you to say common phrases and you kinda learn the words and how the grammar works along the way.
