Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

I’m hating that I’m liking it. I really liked this one😭 guys I watch too many action fighting movies.

This literally is OK K.O. (Cartoon Network) just more intense.

Ok. MY POOR PICCILO DONT DIE ONE ME😭I NEEDED YOU.

And Gohan🥰 cutest little thing ever. He reminds me of Jack Jack and K.O. (Cartoon Network).

I liked this one best so far because it was all a fight. And I love me some action. And it wasn’t as cringe. But still I find this series stupid. But it’s okay. It’s not like great but it’s not bad ahhhh why did my brother have to be right😭

Zabili go i uciekł. Trochę dziur fabularnych jest, ale pierwsza walka Goku i Vegety przeszła już do historii.

The Saiyans arrive and our team joins together to battle them. The whole volume concerns this one theme and we may as well call this the "Hamlet" volume as practically everybody dies. (But death is not always death as we know it in Dragon Ball) As the book ends the fight is not yet over ...

This Full Colour edition is fantastic read with its bright colours and magazine sized pages. A quality edition and I loooove the large panels!

Last time, on Dragonball Z...

With the defeat of Raditz, Son Goku has been training for the terrible threat streaming to earth as a deadly duo of the nearly extinct Saiyin race come to finish what Raditz started. In the mean time the other warriors of Earth (including Goku's young son) are diligently training knowing they will be fighting not only a threat to themselves but to everyone on Earth.

...and now the saga continues.

Now with his training complete and restored to life things are basically going according to plan to plan with a slight issue of King Kai (the lord of worlds) forgot about the time it would take for him to return to Earth. Now Goku must hurry back along the Serpent Way which is much easier after all of his training as the mightiest defenders of Earth confront their potential doom from across the stars. In the end the true fight between Goku and the Saiyan prince Vegeta will only just begin as we make our way to the final chapter of the Saiyan Arc books with glorious full color pages.

Goku coming down to kick Piccolo's ass a few volumes ago was fantastic. Goku shitting on Nappa with Kaio-Ken is almost as good.

I still feel bad for having decided I disliked the Z chapters. Shit's still fun. The full color really enhances the action, which still has decent choreography.

Look for the classic pose of Yamcha's death, as well as the start of Goku vs. Vegeta.

This volume, THIS VOLUME abjdbedodpeps 😍 I LOVE IT. I love everything about it. Vegeta is the best. Nappa is funny. Goku kicks ass. God finds out he is an “alien” and that he is from Namecc, as is Piccolo. Everyone realizes that Goku and Gohan are Sayans.

Bottom Line Up Front: Akira Toriyama reinvents the Dragon Ball universe with the beginning of the Saiyan Saga. While some argue against the change, it's hard to deny the entertainment value of this fun filled drama. With fan favorite characters returning, and the stakes increased, this is a great choice for any manga lover.

The Good:
1) The tone is what makes Dragon Ball Z so popular. It's serious, but with a healthy dose of lightheaded fun.

The Bad:
1) If you don't care much for over the top characters...probably not for you.
