British Bad Boys #1

Cinderella and the Geek: Library Edition

Rate this book
From Christina Phillips a sexy, new romance with a hero you won't forget . . .

I'm not looking for love or a Happily-Ever-After because I know how that ends. I just need to concentrate on my degree and look after myself. But there's something about my boss, Harry, I can't resist. It's crazy since he's so hot and smart it should be illegal.

And then, just like Cinderella, I have my night at the ball and a midnight kiss, and for a week all my sexy daydreams come true. That fake date changes my life in a way I could never imagine. It turns out, Harry wants me too.

But I'm off to pursue my dreams, and he's taking his business to the next level. There's no way this fairytale has a happy ending, but that doesn't keep me from wishing for it.

Contains mature themes.

This started as a really cute and fun book about an “ordinary girl” and her “nerdy” but handsome boss.

But then after a while I understood that all she thought about was having “earthshaking sex” with him and then leaving for college.
In the beginning I ignored it, but after kissing him she still only thinks about having sex with him and then leaving him.
Maybe that’s mature to not think romantically when you’ll leave for university far away, but only to think about sex is kind of lame?
Sorry not sorry?

This was a really cute novel that I really enjoyed. Alice and Harry were cute together but I can see where many thought this story was a bit awkward. There were moments that it was a little annoying and they went back and forth but I think overall I really enjoyed the story.

I liked that they both were awkward nerds that didn’t know how to show their love for one another. The sex scenes and other parts made me LMAO! I also thought Harry was super sweet with a lot of his adorable gestures. Overall, I found this a cute story that I was glad that I got a chance to read.

I absolutely can't believe I read this whole thing. I'm so annoyed with this book...

[Slight spoilers]

So, anyone who has been reading my reviews should kind of know by now that I'm pretty lenient with romance novels I read. Yet, with this book there is no way for me to be kind.

Let me tell you that the biggest conflict between the couple is how they don't talk to each other. They both have assumptions about their relationship and how the other feels about their relationship. In fact, one of them assumes they are in this for the long haul and the other doesn't like PDA while THE OTHER person assumes they know this is temporary until they leave and that the other person doesn't like PDA.
THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!
And yet, their assumptions about their relationship and the fact that they never talk about anything serious is never brought up, even in the resolution when Alice realizes she shouldn't have assumed Harry knew/wanted the relationship would end. SHE LET HIM TAKE THE BLAME

So... I'm so frustrated. The whole conflict for me were these assumptions and they are never addressed. HOW?!?!
And then I think about it more and I find little problems:
>How did a 18/19 year old get a admin position at a start-up company? How did she previously work at a law office?
>Why is nothing besides their relationship talked about by like everyone, yet nothing serious is discussed???
>What else filled this romance only focused book? Why couldn't there have been outside problems?
>Why were none of their fears about being in this relationship (what certain friends/bosses would think, LDR not working) addressed-- AT ALL?
>Why did they not ask each other "soooo.... are we dating? what is this?"

I don't understand what I just read or how I possibly got through it all.

I should probably talk more about character development and growth, the setting, the plot, but seriously... I'm so frustrated over the "plot" and romance development (I mean... no development??) that I can't even remember if I liked characters or why. Side characters? Introduced and used only for a lead to talk about their relationship, except the mother who provides a sense of guilt in Alice.

But, I like giving positive remarks about all books I read...
And I mean, I did finish reading this...
So, I guess it is easy to read and flows well. I flew through this book, but that might be because the characters kept thinking and saying the same sentiments over and over.
I also liked the geeky and video game aspects of this book. These are the things I really wanted. This book have been better if more of these themes were included.

Do I recommend this? Not unless someone really wants to read about a main character who is a geek.

Cinderella and the Geek wasn't on my radar until I stumbled upon it in an Entangled email, but as soon as I saw the tagline and read the synopsis, I knew it was the book for me. I love Cinderella-esque books, especially when they involve a fake date turned real. Luckily, Cinderella and the Geek was a charming romance, perfect for anyone who has ever dreamed of a picture perfect evening.

Cinderella and the Geek introduces Alice and Harry. They're co-workers and friends, but they each have one big secret: they wish they could be more than just friends. Alice is sweet, nerdy, and a hopeless romantic. I loved how awkward she could be, especially when it came to flirting and boys and relationships in general, because not only did it give me a been-there-done-that feeling but it also brought out the determined side of Alice, one that was gun-ho about getting what she wanted no matter how cringe-worthy it may be. Harry, on the other hand, is slightly clueless yet oh-so-adorable. I loved how passionate he was about his company. I also liked how close he was to his family. Yes, they had their troubles, but at the end of the day they were a good bunch. Out of the two, Harry is the more timid. He knows he likes Alice, but he's so nervous when it comes to pursuing her. There were so many times I was thinking, come on, Harry, just admit your feelings already.

Cinderella and the Geek's plot mainly focuses on Alice and Harry's developing romance, Harry's company, and Alice's college plans. I found all story lines to be interesting. The romance was probably my favorite out of the bunch to follow. It was sweet yet awkward. Sometimes I cringed (but not in a bad way, in an oh-my-god-this-is-so-real-it-hurts way) and sometimes I swooned. I especially appreciated that Christina made Alice and Harry's first romantic encounter not perfect. So many times in romance books we see these flawless romance scenes - no one does or says anything embarrassing, everything flows perfectly - but here we got the awkwardness on full blast, and it was so refreshing! I want more "realness" in my romance! I did have one problem with Alice and Harry, however, and that was their lack of communication. Yes, it was a romance, and yes, there's always some miscommunication to be found, but there were so many times where one's feelings were hurt in an instance where all they had to do was ask a simple question. It got to be a bit much. Going along with this, I also thought Alice was a bit immature at times, especially at first. I'm all for being a hopeless romantic, but sometimes life isn't like the movies.

Regardless, I still found Cinderella and the Geek to be yet another great romance by Entangled. I look forward to seeing what British Bad boy is featured next!

An adorable, awkward, realistic about two socially-strained individuals falling in love.

(This was like an NA version of the Sarina Bowen I read earlier this week. Kinda weird coincidence.)

"My social life's always been pretty dire. When I was at school there was the never-ending struggle to maintain an A grade average, and I'm so used to having my nose in a book it feels weird when I don't."

Alice, an assistant at Harry's gaming company, is determined to make a move for Harry before she goes to college in 5 weeks. Harry is crushing on Alice - but worried about rocking the friendship boat. A catalyst brings them together - but their insecurities, issues with communication, lack of relationship experience and goofiness keep getting in their way.

"I kneel before you, bereft of my Exitium shielding. And ask if you'll consider pledging your life with mine for all eternity."

This is a really delightful contemporary romance, which takes the reader on a journey through the whole gamut of emotions! Having your dream lover as your boss - and him never looking at you in that way has proved too much for this young lady. She's about to leave her job, her boss and her romantic dreams behind her and go off to university......should she risk their friendship and brilliant working relationship to see if he can look at her in a different way? Then comes the opportunity to do just that - he needs a date to go to an awards ceremony. Can their fate date lead to more?

There are laugh out loud incidents, plenty of drama and turmoil in this well crafted story. It is a story where her mother's experiences have influenced her reactions and his first love's cutting behaviour and his secret both have affected him and his reactions. Can they overcome these to give them, the beauty and the geek, a chance for love and romance to blossom between them? I thoroughly enjoyed this and have no hesitation in highly recommending it!

I requested and received a copy of this novel. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.

My Thoughts

“He’s taking you to a ball. You’re going to have your very own Cinderella moment.”

You know the feeling, you’re between reads and really in need of some light entertainment - then this is the perfect book for you. A really cute read that contains some laughs and loads of sexy romance - just what was required for a quick, no brainer escapism. This is not meant to be deep and meaningful, it’s chick lit, light and fluffy.

A super easy read, the perfect filler between your more heavier reads and just what I was looking for. It’s a sweet new adult romance as Alice is preparing for college, while Harry is in his early 20s. The fun take on this particular read, is that they are both nerds and awkward, not knowing what to do or how to express their feelings. See .... cute!

The Cinderella moment at the awards night and ensuing fallout is fun. I liked the dual, alternating perspectives for both Alice and Harry as it gives you a fuller understanding of both sides, especially their backgrounds and what made them the way they are and therefore, act the way they do. Of course the other Cinderella aspect is the classic coming from different backgrounds and wondering if she would get her Prince Charming.

It’s not all fluff, there is much to be said about not being honest with your feelings, allowing past hurts to impact on present relationships and of course the main plot, misunderstandings. Inside all of us is that person scared of being honest, showing how you really feel and prepared to take that chance to fall in love. This ticks all the boxes for a feel good, chick lit romance.

Let’s make it clear - this is no ground making plot here. But what you do have is a light hearted, sexy romp with just enough depth and a lovely brush with fairytales. What’s not to like?

No need to be back by midnight.” She winks at Alice who pretends not to notice. “Don’t forget to take loads of selfies.”

A very enjoyable read! Harry & Alice are wonderfully awkwardly adorable together. The witty banter and awkward moments between the two of them had me smiling all the way through the book. The two have been lusting after each other forever and with Alice leaving for university soon, she knows it's now or never. When the perfect opportunity to spend time with Harry presents itself Alice steps up to offer Harry her help. This leads to one epic, glorious nice together. Will they find a way to make it more?

I definitely recommend this one.

SPOILER FREE

Quem tem acompanhado o blog esse ano já percebeu que eu tenho favorecido leituras mais leves e descomprometidas que o meu normal. Cinderella and the Geek é mais um dessa leva.

Harry and Alice are so adorable. Alice is the girl who has put her idea of a boyfriend off until after college. She wants to be someone her mom is proud of. Only this sweet, efficient smart as a whip girl has a crush on her boss. A boss she intends to have a before college fling with.

Harry is the geek whose heart was crushed long ago so he has shut that part of his life down. He is focused on his role play game and making his company successful. He is now noticing Alice as more than a friend but is afraid to ruin a good thing. He is also fearful that she will like his brother over him in the end like everyone does.

We have two smart sweet people who are crushing on one another but afraid to act on it. ONly suddenly they are in a situation where there attraction takes over and they act on it. They are in a Cinderella moment for Alice and Harry wants to give her the stars and moon. Things are going so wonderfully. We get such sweet interactions and some misunderstandings but you can see the attraction and how much that they care for each other. Only their lives interrupt their romance.

We have her mom, their jobs and misunderstandings come into play. they act rashly and when they step back and ee the big picture they realize that they misunderstood the other. We get the swoony moments with Harry at the end that just warm the heart.

The story is sweet and cute. We have two people scared to show their feelings for each other unexpectedly take a chance and fall in love. We have the Cinderella moment at the awards that turns into more but we also get the realness of what misunderstanding and past hurt can do to a relationship. You fall in love with each character and Harry and Alice as they explore their feelings and fall in love while finding their way to be strong, supportive people for the other. Just a great feel good romance.

Cinderella and the Geek is a sweet and sexy story between practical, organized Alice and gorgeous geek, Harry. As they navigate their feelings for each other outside of the workplace, sparks fly and emotions get entangled.

This is a departure from my usual read but because Ms Phillips is an author I trust, I decided to give it a shot. It doesn't not disappoint. Not only is it a sweet story but it also sizzles with sexiness as it deals with ambitions, career aspirations and personal desires. And it doesn't have all the angst and rubbish drama that characters this age group have in other stories I've read that have made me want to throw my Kindle in frustration.

Alice is a level-hearded sort of girl. Even though she's young, she's also capable and organized. She's managed to organize Harry and Blitz for the last many months she's worked there leading up to her leaving to start university. She's become indispensable to the company and to Harry. But Alice also has some self-esteem issues and misguided pre-conceived notions about relationships and men. She tries to keep things light with Harry even as she falls deeper and deeper for him. There's a part of her that wants him forever but a part of her that's also put a use-by date on him and their relationship. I'm a little disappointed she doesn't communicate better with Harry about her feelings and thoughts even though a lot of her inner monologue was quite strong in her belief of Harry dipped in a heavy dose of her own insecurity. Perhaps it's her innocence and her lack of experience but I think she should have talked to Harry. I do like that she understands Harry so well and sees him for the great guy he is.

I loved Harry. He's gorgeous, ambitious, dedicated and a bit clueless. Harry's got issues too. Or rather, he's got one giant issue hanging over his head from a failed relationship in the far off past. Unfortunately, that does color some of his perspective about his relationship with Alice and his brother. Again, I wish he had talked to Alice about things. Neither of them did a good job of communicating when things got dicey. However, to his credit, Harry did an excellent job of redeeming himself.

At the start of this book, I was debating whether I'd read the other books in the series or not. I didn't know if the stories would be for me. The characters are younger than I normally read. However, since finishing the book and having Ms Phillips deliver a very satisfying happy ending, I'm all in. I am looking forward to the other books in the series and can't wait to see who are next on the list to fall in love.

Take two awkward people with some baggage, put them in a fake date situation, and watch the sparks fly. That's pretty much what happened in Cinderella and the Geek, and it was a lot of fun watching this romance blossom.

Who?

• Harry, the RPG designer, who had put off romantic relationships after suffering a terrible breakup six years ago.

• Alice, Harry's office manager, who had little romantic experience, and was leery of relationships due to her father abandoning her family.

What?

Alice's time with Harry's company was dwindling, and she was determined to act on her feelings for Harry before she left. A well timed fake-date reveals that each has feelings for the other, but will this this relationship last beyond its expiration date?

Why?

This book was really fun. I loved how adorably awkward both Alice and Harry were, and their romance was totally smile inducing. Harry especially endeared himself to me with so many of the things he said and did, and he may have made me swoon. There was witty banter and fun outings, and the drama was fairly low, which is a win for me. I definitely enjoyed the bulk of this story, but I especially loved the epilogue! It was just precious.

Not a huge fan of this one. It wasn't terrible. Not at all terrible. It just was too awkward for me to read. Not the writing.. but the conversations and the characters in general. Which I do understand that it's what the author was going for but I cringed so much while reading this book. It was very real life awkwardness and Yeah just wasn't for me.

If you enjoy real life, awkward people getting together then this book is for you. It's also a workplace romance.

Cinderella and the Geek was an adorable story with a warm feeling I enjoyed being tucked into each time I picked up the book to continue reading. It had lots of elements of the Cinderella story (single parent household, rich/poor contrast, the glitzy ball), but it was more than that, too, with the author bringing in lots of other pieces of romance trope to build a unique retelling, such as twins, gaming, first love, office romance, and long distance relationships. My favorite part of the book was that it opened with the hero and heroine both having long-time secret crushes on each other. Swoon!

On a side note, I’m a sucker for all things United Kingdom and the language and phrasings in Cinderella and the Geek was the real deal with the author being a UK native. Car parks, going to university, and bollocks…bring on the British English!

I absolutely loved everything about this story. There is something refreshing about reading a story about a geek who is completely out of touch and doesnt realise just how attractive he is. I picked this book up in the morning and had it finished by lunchtime. I loved Harry an everything about him. He is the perfect mix of hot and sweet. Alice was perfect for him. She wasnt some hot super model or some fame chaser. Both Harry and Alice both have issues and it was great too see how they over came them to get what they needed... each other.

I hold open the door for Alice. As she walks outside, her perfume dives straight to my dick. Don’t even think about rising to the occasion. Too late.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. My thoughts and opinions are my own. Also, the quote I used may have changed or been altered in some way, but I am quoting from what I received.

This one started off so well, until my eye started twitching (which it is still doing). In all fairness, I don't think the eye-twitching is in any way related to Cinderella and the Geek, but the book was responsible for a ridiculous amount of eye-rolling. Alice was so insecure, and I absolutely hated how many times she called herself "ordinary," because she didn't look like a model or have perfect hair every day. There is nothing wrong with wearing your hair in a ponytail if it's what you want to do.

"He’s the most gorgeous guy ever, and me, well, I’m so ordinary it’s not funny."

Like I said, it started off well. I enjoyed the information about Blitz and The Plains of Exitium. I love RPGs and wish they had gone into a little more detail. Obviously that wasn't the focus of the book, but it would have been a bonus. Watching Alice and Harry come together (after working closely for nearly a year) was fun at first, but their insecurities and cluelessness really started to grate on my nerves. It felt like they were purposefully misreading things just to be difficult. I really wish they had just spoken their thoughts out loud, and maybe confronted some of their ever-present concerns, but no. Things have to completely fall apart before anything can be done about it.

I did like certain aspects of the book. For example, the first time they're intimate with each other is from Harry's perspective. Normally these things are told from a female's view, and it was nice to see how a guy would react in that situation. Those scenes were brief and scarcely detailed compared to other books I've read, but they were sweet and endearing.

Alice and Harry were choking on unspoken thoughts and feelings, and I was continuously trying to give them a mental Heimlich maneuver. I finished the entire book, but I lost hope about halfway through. The story was interesting enough to make me want to see how everything played out, but even that was anticlimactic.

A combination Cinderella retelling and office romance, Cinderella and the Geek was a quick-paced modern New Adult story that was absolutely adorkable and kept me smiling the whole time.

This was my first time reading Christina Phillips’ work but I have a feeling it won’t be my last. Not only did the overall writing, storyline and characters draw me in immediately, but the romance was every bit as engaging and lovely as well. Set in England, we had dual POVs between Alice and Harry as they bumbled about in their relationship–both inside and outside the workplace. Now I have a feeling this may not be the romance for everyone as there was a clear lack of communication between our main characters and they had some preconceived ideas about each other that weren’t necessarily true. This reads like an in-between a YA and an NA story. And I really liked how awkwardly adorable Harry was. He's the one that carried this book for me. Go hot nerds!

But while I enjoyed the story, around the 65% mark, I found myself getting annoyed with both MC's because so many of their issues could've been avoided if they just had a proper chat. The 2 of them spent a lot of time assuming certain things. And you know what happens when people make assumptions, right? Most of the time, they're wrong about said assumptions. Fill in the blanks and you can guess what happens to our happy couple.

Nevertheless, all's well that ends well. We even get a very cute epilogue. This was a solid 3 stars for me.

I wanted to like this book, but I just couldn’t keep slogging through it. Over a third of the way in and it still felt like nothing was happening. If Alice and Harry had actually talked instead of constantly making assumptions (something that drives me nuts), this would have been a quick and ok short story. But between the slow pace, bland characters, and issues of believability, Cinderella and the Geek felt like a chore to read and I had to throw in the towel after five days of trying.

Alice has had a thing for a boss for a while now, but she's never acted on it. However, with her leaving the company soon, she's determined to finally go after what she wants. Yet, just when things are starting to heat up and change between them, she finds Harry allowing old wounds to interfere in their relationship. Will Alice be able to convince him that he's the one she wants, or will they both walk away from their shot at happy ever after?

Stories encompassing a heroine that feels like Cinderella and a hero that gives her a magical night I've found are always good reads, and Ms. Phillips really surprised me with this story. Certainly, it was very engaging, fun, and I loved this couple together. The way this story started sets the fast-pace of this story, as the heroine has a plan for her last weeks of work before she leaves, and finding out more about the plan and whether the heroine would go through with it had me reading this story quickly since I was determined to discover what she would do. Would Alice chicken out on her plan?

Both the main characters were compelling and I loved these two together, as they explore the wonderful chemistry between them and see whether they can make their relationship work. Will Alice and Harry continue their relationship once she leaves? However, in saying that, both have issues that make them wary of relationships since Harry has always felt like second best to his twin brother and I could understand why he feels threatened because of what his last girlfriend did. While Alice, she's not willing to give up her dreams for anyone. Not after how things turned out for her mother and what her mother sacrificed for her father.

Furthermore, the heroine was resilient, courageous and I liked how she interacted not only with Harry but with the secondary characters. They all seem to love her, except one woman that feels threatened by her friendship with the two men she works for and I liked what Harry did to make sure that woman knew how important Alice was to them personally and to their business. Alice is the glue that keeps everything going. I also liked how Alice handled herself when it came to interacting in Harry's world, especially the night they go on their first date. How was she not more jealous? While the hero, he's a good guy that deserves happiness and I'm glad that he finally went for it with Alice because they're so good together. I also liked the close relationship the hero had with his sister and that she wasn't afraid to say whatever was on her mind, especially when it came to his relationship with Alice. Really, how could he be so clueless at times and yet so brilliant at others?

Overall, Ms. Phillips has delivered a really good read in this book where I absolutely loved this couple together since they have plenty of chemistry and the ending had me loving Harry's determination to win back Alice. How could he have not trusted her? She's nothing like his ex. I would recommend Cinderella and the Geek by Christina Phillips, if you enjoy the friends to lovers trope, boss-employee romances, Cinderella-type stories, or books by authors Cindi Madsen, Robin Bielman, Magan Vernon and Avery Flynn.

Cinderella and the Geek is the first in the British Bad Boys series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I know I am late with my review, but, in my defense, I do work a LOT, but, I am so glad that I took time out to read this book. It has some of my favorite topics, IT and British men. Alice is working at a gaming company that is quite successful and looking to break into the United States with its game. This job is a temporary stop before Alice leaves for university several hours away. She appears to be working for a year and saving her money while living at home with her mother.

Harry is one of the owners of the gaming company and co-owns it with his friend Caleb. Both are serious techies and from all accounts both great guys who are great looking. Alice's office is right next to Harry's and both have crushes on each other but neither has acted on it until Harry needs a date for an awards ball where he is in the running for being the sexiest geek. It appears to be a pretend date but, the only people who seem to be fooled is Harry and Alice as it gives each of them the chance to pretend to act in a way that they really wanted to act anyhow like touching and holding hands. It is the kiss that really sparks things and they start to date in secret. This leads to a great start of a relationship until it is time for Alice to leave for school. It is a great story and it is interesting to see the dialogue of two people who should talk to each other instead of holding so much dialog in their heads. I look forward to the next in the series. If you're looking for a cute love story to cuddle up with on a cold February night, Cinderella and the Geek is it.

Harry and Alice have been fancying each other for months but neither have acted on it until the time draws near for Alice to leave for university. Then, fortuitously, Harry is nominated for Sexy Geek of the Year award and needs a date. Who is the obvious choice? Alice, of course.

Alice gets to dress up, this is supposedly where Cinderella comes in, and she and Harry soon discover that they both have been enamored with each other.

Unfortunately Harry's insecurity derived from a previous relationship and an inability to communicate and misinterpret on both of their parts takes over. While I put all of that down to New Adult syndrome, I can understand that it might be frustrating to read.

Now, the part I don't understand is how Cinderella and the Geek can be part of a British Bad Boys series. If you see that and think you're going to be reading about a "Bad Boy," unless a grown man getting his nose out of joint equates with being a bad boy, you're going to be disappointed. Harry may be a little oblivious, but he's not Bad.

I have to admit that some of the satisfaction garnered from this read was that I was imagining David Tennant as Harry. And, I know, he's Scottish and blah, blah, blah, but that's what the brain did--and I didn't mind.

So if you want a quick, sweet read that you really don't have to think too much about, try Cinderella and the Geek. (And imagine Harry as David Tennant....unless...gasp...you don't like David Tennant.)

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

It's a sweet romance novel. Story is interesting enough and characters are great. I loved both Harry and Alice. Geeks are my favourite heroes to tell you the truth, so I enjoyed reading about a love between "Beauty and the Geek." It's a must read if you're looking for a lighthearted HEA kind of story. I'm sure this one won't disappoint you.

Harry works a lot, basically his company is his home. Alice works with him so obviously she is off-limits. He can't have romantic thoughts for her. What if that ruins their working relation? But lately it has been becoming more and more difficult for him not to think of her as a woman rather than just a co-worker...

Alice has admired Harry from a far since as long as she has known him. He is her friend and that friendship matter to her so there is no way she will ever date him. What if it didn't work out between them and their friendship suffered? However, now she is leaving the city. She probably won't see him again. So why not have an affair to remember... maybe even a one nightstand? It might be exactly what she needs. She doesn't have big romantic dreams to begin with, but Harry is important to her and she wants him like crazy...

Fortunately for both of them, they soon get a chance to act upon their mutual attraction. But will it lead to a disaster or something beautiful is yet to be determined.

I loved this twist on time old romance theme and would definitely recommend it to other romance lovers.

P.S. I received a complementary copy of this book via NetGalley.
