Ευχάριστη κι αστεία ιστορία για ένα ψάρι που προσπαθεί να ανταπεξέλθει στην αλλαγή από την γυάλα στην λίμνη.

A Charming Tale of Bravery and Belonging

★★★★

Ένα ψάρι που δεν ήξερε να κολυμπάει (A Fish Who Didn't Know How to Swim) by Lida Varvarousi is a deceptively simple picture book in rhymes that carries a profound message for both children and adults. While the text is in Greek, the beautiful and expressive illustrations make the story's emotions universally understandable.

The story follows a small, vibrantly colored fish who lives a safe but lonely existence in a small fishbowl. He gazes out at the vast, inviting lake, filled with the promise of friends and adventure, but is held back by a heavy weight of fear and insecurity - so much so that he feels he has forgotten how to swim.

This book is a perfect tool for discussing big emotions with young children. It beautifully validates feelings of anxiety and fear of the unknown, rather than dismissing them. The fish's journey is not about a sudden, magical cure for his fear, but about finding the courage to try. The moment he decides to take a risk and leap into the lake is empowering and deeply moving.

Varvarousi's art is stunning. The fishbowl scenes feel confined and melancholic, while the underwater world of the lake is depicted as a shimmering, magical space full of life and color. The illustrations do most of the storytelling, making it accessible to a wide audience even without strong knowledge of Greek.

In a nutshell: This is more than just a story about a fish; it's a metaphor for anyone who has ever felt too "heavy" with worry to take a leap of faith - whether it's starting at a new school, trying a new activity, or simply making a new friend. It’s a gentle and powerful reminder that our inner strength is often greater than our fears, and that true belonging and happiness lie just on the other side of courage.

Highly recommended for its beautiful artwork and its heartfelt, empowering message! 🙂
