Mr. Dead Guy

Rate this book
Terra Klein, a mostly out-of-work detective, wakes up one Saturday morning with a killer hangover and a dead guy in her bed; which would be bad enough but she doesn’t know how he got there or why he’s dead. The Police, however, have some solid ideas. They quickly identify the victim as Michael Massa, a part-time art expert and full-time cad, and by an amazing coincidence the person Ms. Klein was recently hired to investigate.
On her own since being booted out of Acme Investigations for drinking and having an affair with her boss; Terra employs a ‘backed-into-the-corner’ approach to crime solving combining dumb luck, help from her quirky friends, disguises, and a wee bit of common sense. She would take her predicament more seriously if she didn’t have a few friends at the 5th Precinct and a new guy, Jack McGowen, whom Terra hopes will be ‘the one.’
Terra continues to evade prison to pursue the new man in her life but as the evidence against her mounts; a missing gun, eye witnesses, sketchy reputation, and an alibi that places her at the scene of the crime, not even her new lover, or the Canadian border, can save her. Possessing more heart than investigative skills, she and her trusty mutt, Zan, realize that they must hunt down the real killer before even the good cops decide she’s the perfect suspect or she becomes the next victim.
In Mr. Dead Guy, the first book in the Terra Klein Series, Terra evolves from a desperate, thirty-something, slacker, alcoholic to well, being pretty much the same. Smart and difficult, she will never be a poster girl for the Junior League. And though trouble seems to chase her around Manhattan like a rabid dog; Terra is at her best when things look the worst.

Smart saucy sarcastic PI Terra Klein and her intrepid canine, Zan, take a bite out of crime when they traipse about New York City in search of Mr. Dead Guy's killer. Laura Jean R. creates a colorful cadre of characters, including the eclectic Mr. Wu and his foretelling fortune cookies, Terra's unexpectedly pleasant blind date, and even Mr Dead Guy himself.

As a librarian and prolific reader, this is one of the most fun and clever mysteries I have ever read! Judging this book from its inviting cover art, the collage of chaos is artfully rearranged by Terra for a satisfying conclusion...yet leaving us readers wanting for more of Terra Klein & Zan adventures!

Amazon's Free Kindle for PC reading app makes Mr. Dead Guy accessible for everyone's enjoyment.

Women and dogs make really great partners - in fiction AND in real life! So rings true with New York's own street-saavy crime fighting duo Terra & Zan.

Will Terra ever find love that lasts? Will she ever find a steady job? Will Zan ever perfect the Art of Sleeping and Eating? Will we ever know? Right now, we know and love Terra for who she is - even if she may have had a part in Mr. Dead Guy's demise...

And, of course, Zan - who keeps Terra on par and remembering the more important things in Life - sea shanties, good food (biscotti, fortune cookies and a good beer), and the value of a power nap.
