Gray Line

Rate this book
A family is gruesomely massacred in an upscale community. Among the dead is a demon -- one of many unleashed during World War II by Hitler's misguided efforts to harness the powers of the dark side. But one of the family members (a daughter) is missing.

Maggie Quinn, the detective assigned to the case, enlists the help of the alluring Dianna Theron, a half-human half-demon bar owner who specializes in one-night stands, to search for the missing girl, who has a dark secret of her own.

This original piece of fiction was voted as 2012 Story Of The Year on The Athenaeum.

Firstly, you need to know that Gray Line is free online fiction in a very "raw" state and has every spelling and grammar mistake it is possible to make in writing a book. If you exclude that, Gray Line is a great read in every other possible way: characters, plot, action, emotions... It would be perfect for publishing in the hands of a good editor(s).
You can find Gray Line in three parts (Gray Line, The Fallen and Redemption) on the Academy of Bards or the Athenaeum, but the epilogue of Gray Line is only available on Windstar & Zee's yahoo group Dark Hallway.

This is one of the most popular original f/f stories in free online fiction which first appeared way back in 2010. I've always put off reading it because it was unfinished until the last quarter of 2012.

The story is dark, and there is a fair amount of violence and gore. But those elements and the paranormal aspect of the story (demons living/fighting amidst humans) never overwhelm the love story. The characterization is top notch. I love all of the four main characters (all women), but especially Dianna, the half-demon. She's one of those rare characters that stay with you long after you've read a book. She's a succubus, a creature that lives for and thrives on sex, but she's also half-human, and so the constant struggle of both her natures for dominance is a joy to read. The whole story is worth reading for her alone. Quinn, the police detective, also has a very compelling backstory. And her heartbreaking struggle to retain her humanity in the face of overwhelming odds is the cornerstone of the book.

The tale is split into three parts, and was written over a period of two years and by two people. As such, the tone is a bit uneven. The first part is appropriately dark. The second part is the bleak and depressing. But hang in there 'cause the third part will make everything worth it.

Even if it is free, It stands up well to other paranormal books. I'll have to say it's a bit better than Geonn Cannon's Riley Parra series, with which it shares very similar paranormal elements. Riley Parra is also well-crafted but the difference is in the emotion. This is a classic case for the argument that men just can't do dyke drama as well as women. Although there was an instance or two when I thought the lady authors overdid it. But angst is always > no angst. So gimme drama anytime. :)

One caveat though. The online version of this work is riddled with every single typo you can think of--wrong word usages (your/you're, to/two/too, their/they're/there, lose/loose), misspelled names, different names for the same character, wrong person speaking or referred to. The first part is relatively typo free, but the second and third look like they haven't been beta-read.

I'm surprised this isn't published because it is fantastic. I loved the chemistry between Dianna and Quinn and the plot was hard to put down. The world the book takes place in is very reminiscent of the World of Darkness setting with some Constantine thrown in. I hated to see the story end but was well worth the read. I need to pay more attention to online books; makes me wonder how many other hidden gems I've missed.

What a absolutely great (great!) story this is, now I see what everyone has been raving about it. It has a little bit of Lost Girl and Supernatural at the start, but then it goes off and becomes this action-packed, sizzling, and sweet and heart-tugging epic that just... straight 5 stars. Love it. :)

It's hard not to give this at least 4 stars. It's such an entertaining story. I'm impressed by the authors' imagination.
Great plot, good enough romance (quite original as well), overall nice characters. Dianna is funny, charming, sexy, and basically everything you expect from a Succubus. Quinn is incredibly brave and just as lovely.

My favorite part was the 3rd one, just because it was really focused on the romance. There are some lovely (and hot, very hot) scenes, but again, it's really not the usual lesbian romance. I guess that's what makes it really fun to read. Maybe too much smut and not enough fluff, but that's really a matter of taste, isn't it?

If you like adventure and romance, this book was made for you. There's a great balance of both. You get sucked in the universe they created (very similar to the universes of Lost Girl or Buffy, I guess) and it's quite addictive as a result.

Absolutely great story! well constructed storyline, great and consistent characters. Everything Windstar and Zee have generated I have loved so much, that I'd get over any errors that I could see. And there are errors, but the story is totally worth it.
