This book was a helpful road map during our trip to Seattle. It offers helpful highlights when you are overwhelmed, and exhaustive details when you are ready for all the info. I appreciate the humor and sarcasm scattered throughout as well. We found a lot of great food places and sites through this book, but I also think we disagreed about some of the starred (the best/must try) attractions.
LP has never been my favorite resource for our trips, but I usually read it in conjunction with other publications. I enjoy reading different points of views.
Just got done reading this traveling book about Seattle, WA to get ready for our family vacation in September. We are going to Seattle, WA and then Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State!
The downtown architecture walk (p52-53) was "ok", the best part being the Seattle library main branch. Make sure to go when it's open.
Other Seattle highlights: - Ballard Locks (aka Hiram M Chittenden Locks) and Fish Ladder (though we only saw a handful of fish) - International Area (and Uwajimaya) - Snoqualmie Falls (but the trail down to the base just closed and will be closed for the next 4 years for renovation!) - the city view from Gas Works park - Pike's Place Market
Seattle is one of my very favorite cities and Lonely Planet has not done it justice. They give poor advice on where to stay- cheap dumps and noisy hostels where bedbugs WILL bite and you stay with poor weirdos and they don't even name places and give addresses, just direct you to the welcome centers. Their restaurant suggestions give no info on menus. They are delighted druggies can get marijuana. They glorify neighborhoods I wouldn't be caught dead in. Ah.If you want to read a good travel guide to Seattle, this isn't it.
My wife and I read this while living in Seattle to learn about the places of value around us. While we didn't always agree with the relative ratings in the book, most of the attractions listed were enjoyable. We recommend it for people interested in spending at least 3-4 days in Seattle.
Nice little guide to the city of Seattle. Lots of maps, but few photos. Like the descriptions by neighborhood, such as Queen Anne and Pioneer Square. Like the detailed descriptions of the sights at Seattle Center, but could have used some photos.
A lot of content but I find some of the formatting inconsistent and confusing. I wish there were more unique photos as it seemed the same places/things were pictured multiple times. Overall though very helpful, and location ratings appear to line up with other guidebooks for the area.
I know the neighborhoods, the history and to never, ever try to park anywhere downtown thanks to one morning with this book. Thanks also to Jen who had it available as an awesome hostess.
