I love Princess Bride, Game of Thrones and Naked and Afraid. The Big Bang Theory but will take Wolowitz over Cooper. Star Trek not Star Wars. Undercover Boss, Secret Millionaire--any story that shows the little guy making it. I follow the Buffalo Bills like a religion. I am spellbound by showjumping and equestrian eventing. I love curling up and reading all books--no genre is off-topic. I like ironing, I hate peas, love donkeys, I play a killer game of Scrabble. I'm a kiwi who has lived most of my life in Australia and now am in the US. I will often be heading towards the fridge for another Diet Coke. I eat nothing with legs and believe wine goes with everything, oh and I'm an expert at finding new and inventive ways to avoid exercise.

I live in the sparkly beach side suburb of Redondo Beach in California with my infuriating shoe-dropping husband and my two boys who speak in mystifying grunts.

5 wonderful stars!!For me Winning the Boss's Heart was a wonderful story about second chances. It had all the right elements that makes for a truly romantic read.

Mason Christian is a man on a mission. He has 12 weeks to renovate a historic house. The problem was, his latest secretary had quit on him. Again. He has to hire another one fast if he has to make the deadline. Enter number 42. And no, that's not her real name. Her name is Wilhelmina "Billie" McCloud and she's going to be his 42 secretary. Hence, the number designation.

What he didn't count on was that Forty-two was a little crazy herself and is not afraid to challenge him. Every time he calls her Forty-two, she just calls him by other names, too, like Philbert, Sheldon, Engelbert, Jimbo, etc. It was downright hilarious. Mason couldn't quite figure her out. And there is this apparent attraction between them that no matter how hard he tries to ignore, just wouldn't go away.

Billie McCloud has a plan. Work as Mason's secretary for 12 weeks and then after that culinary school. Being raised in a commune with a flighty mother, all Billie wanted was to belong to a community, to be someone's perfection. Her first marriage taught her not to settle for anything less. She was determined to achieve this even if it means putting up with her new boss's inconsiderate demands. Plus, she might also have a chance at saving the historic house that Mason has set out to destroy on behalf of the community she adored.

The Characters

I find Mason's character truly fascinating. He started off like an unfeeling jerk who doesn't allow anyone close to him. He is single-minded in this goal. He doesn't sought human interaction. But even though he was very inconsiderate and unfeeling, we get a glimpse of the pain that he was hiding beneath that impenetrable façade. And let me tell you, his story and the reason why he's changed so much was so heartbreaking, you would just want to reach out and hug him and make his pain go away.

And Billie, as I've said was a strong character. I have to thank Hayson Manning for creating a female character that isn't annoying, whiny or indecisive. What a relief to actually read about a lead female character that doesn't get on your nerves. Billie was such a wonderfully layered character. She had a hard time growing up as a child in a commune, no less. She also married young. It wasn't an ideal marriage and she lost her husband. Even with these hardships, she never complained once. She was optimistic and determined to make a life for herself.

I loved how she recognized the pain that he was hiding and set out to help him. Although, I did feel that her feelings for the Mason were stronger that Mason's were for her at that time, she was no doormat. She wasn't afraid to call him on his bullshit. And when Mason began to thaw a little bit, we see how deep this man actually feels and how capable he is to fall in love again. But he's stubborn so he did some stupid shit there for a while. But nothing too drastic though and it was totally in keeping with his character.

What I loved…
Aside for my obvious love for the two main characters and their love story, there are other things that I loved as well.

First off, the writing. Loved it. The dialogue was superb. It was funny, light and witty. The characterizations were superb. You get these people. The author was able to draw a very vivid picture of each character, even Stanley, the Great Dane was really written well. I love character-driven stories and this book delivers on that 100%.

Another element to the story is Footsteps Bay itself and its townspeople. The author was able to draw me into that world. I was so seduced by the place, I was contemplating moving to New Zealand specifically to Footsteps Bay. The whole thing just worked for me.

The chemistry between Mason and Billie was superb. The sexy was steamy without be overdone. And thank God there was no token, 'I'm-going-to-make-you-come-so-hard-the-neighbors-will-hear-you-scream,' statement that's so common in Contemporary Romance today. Nonetheless, the physical connection between the two characters were palpable.

Overall, Winning the Boss's Heart was a wonderful story from start to finish with wonderful and likable characters. The ending was fantastic. I'm not going to tell you what Mason did to win back Billie's love but let me tell you now, I was oohhed and aahhed and swooned when I read it. It was just so sweet and satisfying. Plus, that epilogue was just beautiful. I will definitely recommend this to Contemporary Romance lovers out there.

4.5 Healing Heart Stars

Yeah, he may be one hot tamale on the outside, but she bet old Satan himself was sitting in his heart playing Solitaire.

I fell in love with this book. Hard. I wasn't sure what to expect going into it. Maybe another stereotypical romance where the rich and jaded boss seduces the naive assistant? Well, that's not what I got. Not even close. Let me tell you, the synopsis of this book doesn't even begin to give it justice. It was so much more. I adored everything about it; the hero and heroine, the gorgeous setting, the romance, the quirky humor, and the writing. I read it in one sitting, and that says a lot about it.

Meet Mason Christian:

He's cold, jaded, rich, and efficiently to the point.

He watched her with those unblinking blue eyes. Didn’t look like the man smiled a whole lot. She resisted the urge to shift in her chair. She doubted his middle name was jocularity or could even form the word “fun” in an anagram.

But behind the unfeeling facade, is the broken soul of a man that's experienced the worst sort of heartache. I knew I was going to fall in love with Mason, he pretty much had me at "42"

I need a cook and a secretary. If you get the job, I’ll be calling you Forty-Two, as none of my assistants stay. I work long hours and expect the same."

Meet number 42, Billie McLeod

Billie is my favorite kind of heroine. She was endearingly quirky, funny, yet she also had this core of strength that I really admired about her.

The relationship development between these two characters was probably my favorite part of the story. There was no insta-love or lust. There was no over the top sexual "you're mine" encounters. It was a beautiful and romantic story about love, forgiveness, healing old wounds, and learning to move on

I loved watching Billie slowly chipping away at Mason's walls. She wasn't whiny, intrusive, or naive about his pain. She recognized that his pain ran deep, yet she never let him hide behind it.

Jesus," he said under his breath.
"Putting yourself out there for salvation?"
"I don’t have a soul," he replied instantly.
"Yeah, you do," she whispered. "You only wish you didn't."

The author did an amazing job with story telling, able to pain a beautiful picture in your mind of Footsteps Bay, New Zealand and it's people. Plus this book gets an automatic 3 stars for featuring one of my all time favorite movies, The Princess Bride.

I devoured this story and didn't want it to end. The last 5% made me tear up, it was just perfect.

And then the icing on the already perfect cake was that epilogue. The entire book was wonderful, lovely, romantic, just perfect. It was exactly what I needed. Miss Manning has now been added to my auto-buy authors. I'm really looking forward to all her future books.

I must say this was a very nice find, thank you very much, Geri for your review this morning. Was lucky enough to visit Haworth over the Easter, where the Brontes lived. Saw the “ruins” of Wuthering Heights, after a long trek over the moors. Love that story.

Mason is a torturned soul.

Billie is great, independent, feisty, lovable.

Loved the description of the property and the town and the folks who lived there.

Mason had perfection. He doesn’t want roots.

Very enjoyable read – first time reading this author and I went to buy her other book and see that I already have it, sitting on my Kindle.

This was yet another REALLY good read for me by Hayson Manning.

This story was a fast easy read that hooked me in right away, with the excellent characters and witty banter that had me laughing and smiling all the way through the book. This is where I feel Hayson Mannings true talent shines through!

My favorite character was the heroine, Wilhelmina, Billy for short. She was smart, funny, witty and had a heart of gold, but when push came to shove she stood her ground and did not back away.

Marcus, was a brooding type of hero due to his tortured past. He dealt with his pain by working himself day and night until he was exhausted and just needed to sleep.

Marcus hires Billy and gives her the nickname of forty two, because she is the forty second assistant he has hired. Billy is hired to work and live in a house that Marcus is renovating into minimalist retreat for a wealthy Japanese business man. He makes Billy sign a contract binding her to the job until the job is finished.

Right away, Billy feels an attraction towards Marcus and she thinks..."what is wrong with me?" Marcus is not an easy person to get along with, but as days pass, Billy being the sweet person she is, is able to break through some of Marcus' rough ways and he starts to soften up a bit.

They eventually end up having sex and let me tell you these two sizzled! I felt the connection they were having during these scenes, but then Marcus would back off afterwards, which of course hurt Billy, leaving me hurting for her too.

Marcus finally comes to realize that there is such a thing as second chances, and that Billy is the one he needs in his life, making for the perfect ending!

Overall, this story made me laugh, smile, cry and sigh. I have no doubt that I will be reading many more of Hayson Manning's romances in the future.

Mason Christian goes through P.A.’s like a child with a pez dispenser … He has hired Billie McLeod as the latest. The only problem is he has flown through so many he doesn’t call them by name anymore … no Billie is labeled and called number forty-two. And so starts a hilarious exchange throughout the book between Mason and Billie.

Mason is driven and work is the only thing he understands anymore. He once had it all, only to suffer a parent’s worst nightmare. After his marriage fell apart, he became a work obsessed machine. But there is something so very sexy about this man. It could be the way he cared for Billie when she became ill. Now he has twelve weeks to flip the current property and have it ready for his Japanese buyer. What he doesn’t have time for is feelings for anyone, including number forty-two. Who seems to be taking over his thoughts throughout the day.

Billie’s character was just what this book needed. I loved her spunky attitude and wit. She always had a quick comeback and didn’t back down from Mason. Determined to stick it out working for Mason, she has dreams of going to Culinary School and she will be able to do just that if she doesn’t walk away. Billie loves the history of Footsteps Bay and the way the community comes together at harvest time. She wants to protect the beauty and the fruit trees on the property that Mason hopes to flip so she does a search on the area and finds the Historic Heritage Act and forwards the information to the head of the council in Footsteps Bay.

This is a story about making the necessary changes in your life. It is about getting a second chance at happiness, even if it is with a new partner. The passionate scenes were well written and you could see the love growing between these two.

I really enjoyed the humor and the banter between Billie and Mason. One of the best parts of this book was waiting to read what new name Billie was going to call her boss. OMG … I absolutely loved some of the names that she called Mason. Reginald, Chip, Kimball, Inglebert, Barnaby, Trout, Herman, and Shaft … LOL there are many more trust me.

There were quite a few lines that I really enjoyed in this book here is one of them:
“I’m not eating with you. Now if we’re done here, I’ve got four million things I need to do prior to collapsing and getting thirteen minutes of sleep before we hit play and start having fun with a capital F all over again. “

This is the second time I've read this book, and loved it the second time as much as the first time I read it.

This book touched my heart. When Billie first started working for Mason he called her 42. He had 41 assistance walk out on him before Billie came to work for him. He worked long hours and expected his assistants to do the same. Mason worked long hours to keep his night mares at bay. He was grieving the loss of his daughter. A pain that no father should ever have to go through. Billie saw through his pain, and attempted to open his heart. She wanted him to see that life could go on. That he deserved all life had to offer. I love the way she stood up to him. Billie never called him Mason, she made up names to call him. When he asked why, she said basically if he couldn't take the time to call her Billie, and kept calling her 42, to expect the same. I loved the easy going banter between the two. I also loved the way he took care of her when she was sick. Billie stole his heart, but it took him a while to figure it out. Great book.

As romances go, this one is fairly sweet. No matter what, you can't stop rooting for Mason and Billie to have their happy ending. But other than that, the plot isn't all that good. There's a lot of introspect, a lot of plans going back and forth, but very little work done - for all that Mason keeps saying he's all work and no play.

Best part of the book is the names they give each other - Mason calls Billie "number forty-two", just because he seems to have had forty one other personal assistants before her (although if he expected them all to cook and do the house chores and still be available for all the technical work involved in the renovation of an historical house, it's no wonder...), and Billie calls him anything under the sun.

Still, if you want a quick read with a steamy romance and not a lot of character depth, you may want to give Winning the Boss's Heart a try.

4 sweet stars

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a cute sweet story. But don't let that fool you this book has its sexy moments.

"I'M THINKING YOU'RE JUICY. I'M THINKING I NEED TO FEEL YOU INSIDE ME. I'M THINKING I'M KIND OF WET JUST STANDING HERE, THINKING OF YOU INSIDE ME."

Mason is closed off, he has a past that he is unwilling to let go. So it holds him down he drowns in it but covers his misery with work. He's a hard ass and likes that. He keeps people at arms length and doesn't ever want to settle down, again.

Billie is a woman who has dealt with some difficult situations. Once married she never really loved her life and through working with this hard ass off a boss, Mason, she begins to realize she needs to start living.

Something she didn't plan on was to have feelings for this arrogant, rude, self involved man that at times she gets a sneak peak of the man he used to be before tragedy hit him. She was falling hard for him.

"WHEN HIS HAND STROKED THE BACK OF HER NECK, SHE HELD HER BREATH AND STRUGGLED AGAINST THE DAMN IN HER HEART. IT PUSHED AGAINST HER RIBS UNTIL IT TURNED INTO A PHYSICAL ACHE.
I LOVE HIM."

She doesn't know why he's so closed off at first but little by little the closer they work together and get to know each other. The more she finds out about him and the more she understands and tries to help him live again.

I think that broke my heart to read about his 'perfection, his family, And to what happened that made him closed off, he holds guilt and carries it around. He wasn't there so in his head he failed his family. It's a scary thing to think about as a parent.

He was closed off to love not wanting to feel but with Billie he didn't have a choice. His heart beat of its own accord.

"STAY WITH ME, BILLIE. YOU HAVE TO. BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T, HEAR THIS NOW. I WILL ALWAYS COME FOR YOU"

Reading this reminded very quickly how much I love Hayson Manning, gifted storyteller and you can always count on some wicked humor woven in!
Mason is the man you're going to love to hate. He's bossy, pushy, driven and overly determined to succeed at all costs. Billie who is divorced, in need of a job applies for the position for two reasons, one being she needs the money to go to culinary school, second she hopes to change his mind about the house and town and make him see how important the place is. Since Max has burned through 41 assistants already he aptly calls Billie #42. Not Billie, 42. Billie in kind, calls him whatever name is on the tip of acerbic tongue at the moment. It's hilarious. Her inner dialogue throughout the whole book kept me laughing. The title assistant also entails cooking for Max. The do all, be all, end all.
He keeps ungodly hours and is exhausting just to deal with him. We get to meet the town folks and Billie's friends. No one will speak to Max. The way they deal with him is thigh master slapping funny. Billie really attempts to ease Max into the beauty of the place, what the house and grounds mean to the locals and we get a lovely view of small town living in NZ.
As hard as Max works, his own story unfolds as to why he's so surly and driven, Billie is also working her magic on the side to try to save the house and keep Max content. A good job done, but doesn't come off without some hitches.
I absolutely adored this story and love Hayson. Solid plot, abundant humor and two well written characters, along with the townsfolk will have you turning the pages until the very end. I read this in one swoop, I did not want to put it down! And remind myself to go back and read the rest of Hayson's books in my library but she's so worth multiple reads! Loved it!

This is the second book I've read from author Hayson Manning, and while I truly enjoyed her first, Wife in Name Only I have to say I think she's really made some strides since then. Winning the Boss's Heart is a well written, deeply emotional read. Hayson has a very unique writing style, simple and unadorned with flowery phrases. Part of the charm is the authenticity of her characters' dialogue. The story is set in New Zealand, where Hayson's biography states she's a native. The expressions the characters use feel quite at home in the setting, not at all forced. I enjoyed the witty banter Billie and Mason engage in - the "names" are a wonderful touch! While both characters were damaged, each dealing with painful memories, Billie is not a whiny woman as many romance heroines are. Mason is the one having the most difficulty, and I loved the way that Billie chose to try and help him get past all of it - she faced it head on and tried to get him to do the same. This is something I found truly refreshing - a heroine who knows what she wants and is not afraid to come out and ask for it.

"I'm thinking you're juicy. I'm thinking I need to feel you inside me. I'm thinking I'm kind of wet just standing here, thinking of you inside me."

Now how's that for honesty?

While I doubted at one point that there was going to be a HEA for these two, when it did come it was so very satisfying, and very touching. Enough to bring more than a tear or two to my eyes...but then I'm a big crybaby! All in all an excellent read, and one that I'd recommend to friends.

Rating: 3.5 Starts

There were some things I really liked about this book and other parts just seemed to keep it from being great.

I liked the heroine Billie she was extremely likeable and had a optimistic attitude through out the book. She only takes a job with Mason in order to get enough money to go back to culinary school and to save the town.

Mason is the typical broody male who doesn't care about anyone else except for himself, or so he would have you believe. He has experienced heartache and vows to never let anyone hurt him again so he keeps his distance; until Billie shows up and starts knocking down all the walls he has built around his heart. He has gone through 41 secretaries when he hires Billie, and insists on calling her number 42 because to him it isn't worth the time to remember their names. Billie retaliates by calling him any name but his own.

Mason and Billie have both been hurt in the past so its hard for them to let anyone close. Billie has had the town's support and has healed, but Mason has tried to use work as a way to not think about the past; he works until he is exhausted and can't think anymore. Billie has seen this first hand and tries to show him that if he stays in town he too can heal and have a second chance at happiness.

Touching..... Heartbreaking.... So many emotions in this story....

I was more than pleased to be able to read Hayson Manning's second book Winning the Boss's Heart. This book is so different than her first book Wife in Name Only.

In this book Hayson brings out so many different emotions. This story was touching and heartbreaking at the same time. There were also times I wanted to laugh.

The lead female character Billie is a strong woman who is supposed to save a house that is about to be destroyed. She doesn't realize she's about to go work for a man who is going to hard to get through to. There's times when Billie I want to say was stubborn. But it was more about her being more passionate about things, more than anything.

Mason, Mason, Mason what can I say about Mason? He's tall, dark and handsome. I fell in love with Mason's character right away. He has a past that he isn't quite ready to move past, or maybe just doesn't know how to. He kinda reminded me of myself at times.

I would definitely recommend this book to my friends and family. I give it 5 out 5 stars.

I'm doing a re read on some of my 5 stars read. I couldn't remember a thing about this one and while i usually have a goldfish memory i still have the "feeling" of a book i really loved. This one nada so i dived in...
And well i must've been in a very good and giving mood because i didn't enjoyed it. I didn't like Mason, the story didn't grabbed me or anything, i was a bit bored actually...
I feel bad but i'm doing something i don't like and changing my rating to 4. If i had read it just this time it would've been a 3 so i think it's a good middle lol.

A novel all about second chances and in Mason's case third and fourth and fifth chances. Billie was a really funny character with some weird quarks that were borderline too weird, but I forgave all that. What I couldn't get past was her continued taking of Mason's utter crap that he kept pouring on her. Yes his background is heartbreaking and I'm sure that would definitely make you not want to ever fall in love again, but his handling of the situation was terribly wrong and I'm not sure I would be understanding enough to let his constant hot/cold attitude slide. The whole ending seemed rushed to me too, even though I really wanted this book to end. Mason's whole turn around on thinking his ex-wife was perfection kind of came out of no where and the explanation there was hazy. I've never read anything else by this author, but I might give another chance in the name of second chances.

I adored this book. I'm a big fan of Hayson Manning's humor and this book was full of laugh out loud moments from the feisty heroine, Billie. I loved her. Paired with the wounded hero, Mason, I couldn't turn the pages quick enough. I really could *feel* the tension radiating off Mason as he fought his attraction to Billie. Equally engaging was Billie's compassion and unselfish desire to help Mason heal from his past. That give and take was written beautifully and watching Mason change put constant smiles on my face. And the ending? Swoon! Mason's actions had me falling even more in love with him.

This was a fun, fast-paced read with heart-tugging emotion and sexy, passionate moments that I think every romance lover will enjoy.

I so enjoyed this story. It really had some funny moments and some poignant ones also. Living in the past is never a good thing. Taking that out on others can be worse.
While in the case for Billie and Mason. Mason is a man in New Zealand that buys a historical home to a small community that they cherish and he wants to modernize it with new and better. Then, he moves onto the next home he flips. Never likes to be in one place very long. As he has his own demons, he trying to outrun all the time.
He needs a P.A. but can’t seem to keep one. He pays well enough but works them to death with the hours and demands. Not only do they have to live at the sight and cook. They still have to do all the jobs he requires as a P.A. and works sometimes twenty-two hours a day. As he does to himself. Signing a contract to the devil gives her life for a kidney and plasma.
By the time Billie shows up to the job site. she is now to be called number forty-two and counting for him. The reason being she knows this because Mason refuses to call her by her name in case she quits too he doesn’t risk getting too close. So, she fixes that by him every name but his own. Some are just too funny.
The sexual tension between these two if off the charts from day one. The banter is sexual foreplay. The names and full-on arguments make it a fast read. A must-read!

This is the first book by Hayson Manning that I have read, and I enjoyed it! Billie is desperate for a job to save some money to go to culinary school. She accepts a job at the old “Wuthering Heights” house in town, working for Mason. Mason is a real estate man, who remodels older homes to meet the custom and specific needs of his clients. Billie doesn’t realize he plans to demolish the home when she signs her employment contract. She’s devastated by this revelation and determined to find a way for Mason to see the real value the old place has without demolishing it.

I loved how Mason is such a demanding boss, that he doesn’t call his assistants by their name, rather by their number. Billie is number 42! I loved how Billie would not call Mason by his name since he can’t be bothered to learn hers! She showed that although she had a hard time in life, she was a strong woman who was able to stand up to Mason and his demands. When we learn why Mason is the way he is, I felt sad for him. But I was glad that Billie helped him through and they were great together for their HEA. I also enjoyed the addition of Billie’s dog and how he fit into their lives as a whole family.

This book pulled at my heartstrings so hard!

It was hard not to imagine myself as Billie, earnest, sweet, open to love, though it kept on disappointing her. She was a heroine I fell in love with almost from the first few pages, and the affection just kept growing.

At first, I didn't know what to make of Mason. However, as I kept reading, it was easy to recognise that he was in deep emotional pain without a healthy outlet. Billie turning up as his newest assistant disrupted many things, including his once closed-off heart, making it yearn for her.

I recommend this book. It's an emotional, humorous, entertaining novel that you won't want to put down.

I voluntarily read & reviewed an ARC of this book, which I received via Entangled Publishing & NetGalley.

Mason and Billie

I couldn’t put this book down because I just had to find out what happened next. I loved it!

Mason. What can I say? He needs us all to wrap our arms around him. Billie is a lighthearted, loving and giving woman that could easily give up on him as he seems to keep asking her. When he finally faces what haunts him, I was choked up right there with him.

You’ll enjoy this book if you like forbidden romances (boss-employee) doing a big city job in a small town setting. It gets just steamy enough to be swoon worthy and there is just enough angst to keep it interesting.

There were parts of this book that I really liked and found intriguing, there were other parts that were just so-so. I really like Billie, she was straightforward, honest, and had a great sense of sarcasm. Mason was a pretty typical male stewing in his past and refusing to give it up. I can understand his guilt, but the way he handled it was so unhealthy. There were times when I felt the story became disjointed and just didn’t flow. It was like something had been skipped or forgotten. All that being said, I did still enjoy it and found it entertaining for the most part.

This was a cute story with a lot of playfulness. The best and most realistic character was Stanley. After you read this and know who this 'old man' is, you will be shocked. I did feel like the underlying issues that kept this two stagnate for so long was a bit too deep to be solved with a hook up.

Very cute story with an HEA, but a bit void of realism.

I loved this book. I loved all the names Billie called her boss when he referred to her as #42. I loved the depth of emotion and the chemistry between the couple. A fantastic read to warm your heart. Highly recommend.

Lots of emotion and great reading

First time reading this author and loved her writing. The characters have lots of wit and yet emotion too. It was nice she did not settle for less than love. Wonder if he would have ever bottom over his grief without her!

Very fun read

I love a good story with strong characters, a great setting and food! I would love to be the kind of cook/chef that Billie is, but it's not in my makeup. I really loved the names she came up with for Mason. A clever idea to get back at him for naming her Forty-two.
