ParaWars: Uprising

Rate this book
The Paranormal Uprising brought myth and legend out of the shadows and into real life. The war that followed tore the world apart. Two years after the Uprising, twenty-year-old Kendry is learning the hard way that the battle lines aren’t as clear-cut as human versus para. And the hard way means being hunted down by both human militants and para separatists. Trouble is, she has no idea why.

On the run with only her mysterious gargoyle guardian, Kendry knows that finding out why she’s on everyone’s most-wanted list will be no easy task. It means charging headlong into a war she’d hoped to avoid, and is woefully unprepared for. So when she realizes that everyone in her life has been lying to her, discovering that she’s somehow the key to ending the war is the last thing she needs. With both sides tearing up the world to find her, it’s decision time for Kendry—keep running, or stand up and fight.

Cait writes YA and NA stories that range from sci-fi and fantasy (because she loves making worlds and things up), to contemporary (because she kind of sort of fell into it and discovered she’s not half bad). Her best friends growing up were the combined works of Robin McKinley, Madeleine L'Engle, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, and too many others to mention.

She drives a Jeep, loves the outdoors, takes pictures of everything she can, and writes obsessively. A martial artist and a former teacher, Cait is owned by two cats who started out incredibly small, and are now incredibly huge.

She currently live in Utah, but Virginia will always be home.

Warning: happy-reader-gushing may be found below!

Wow---what an amazing story! As I started ParaWars: Uprising, I was quickly pulled into the book, following Kendry in this unique world. I fell in love with the world, the writing, and the characters. Especially Axel....(sigh)

I love paranormal romances, but even I can grow weary of the same plot, story, and creatures. Ms. Greer created a new PNR, one filled with creatures that I've never read about before. And I loved it, truly loved it. I was amazed at all the twists, and there was never a dull moment. Action from start to finish, as well as the thrill of discovering a new world, kept me on edge, flipping pages as fast as I could. Add to that the smooth writing, which draws the reader in, as well as the smoldering chemistry between Kendry and Axel, and I was deliriously happy while reading this book! With each chapter that passed, I kept thinking to myself “This is good---really good!” and “I've never read a story like this before”. It's sad to say that of late, those thoughts have been rare to cross my mind while reading, which makes this book all the more special to me. It helped me out of a reading slump, and that's always a good thing.

Axel...oh, my. Just thinking about him sends delicious shivers through me! When the tension finally breaks between Axel and Kendry....*shivers* Gah, that was pure passion, sexy enough to make me squirm a bit! ;)

My only real complaint has to do with Kendry's mother. For playing such a big role in the story, and especially why Kendry fights to save her, her character was invisible—I have no clue who she is, what she looks like, how she acts, or why Herne the great demi god of old, loves her. Her character was completely flat, yet, as I said, was important to much of the storyline. I would have liked a bit more from her character.

Many of the scenes from ParaWars: Uprising are still running through my mind—this will definitely be a book I buy for my keeper shelf! Greer has a new fan, and I will be recommending this amazing, unique and sexy NA paranormal to anyone looking for something different to read. If you think all paranormals are the same, think again! Greer spins a new tale, full of action and wonderful world-building. I dare you to find another like it on the market, and certainly it would not one as well-done as ParaWars: Uprising. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series!

4 1/2 STARS!

I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Just by the name of the book you'll probably be guessing that ParaWars: Uprising is part of the urban fantasy/paranormal genre, and you'd be right. I have read quite a bit of UF/paranormal books and although I can't claim to be an expert, I can tell you that ParaWars is a fresh take on the genre.

You would also be wondering what paranormal creatures are the ones we can find in here? Well, all! All? Yep, think of any paranormal creature and it's quite likely that it'll be here! From Gods from any and all mythologies, to minotaurs, to your usual weres, ghosts to even the Jabberwocky (or maybe a Jaberwocky?).

The ParaWars were world-wide wars that started when the paranormals all over the world decided to reveal their existence to humankind and when the humans didn't take that very well and decided that they didn't want to share their world with the paras, even if they had been living together for centuries (unknowingly).

Two years after the start of the Uprising of the ParaWars Kendry, our main character, lives in a small town where paras and humans have found a way to coexist peacefully, hoping that the raging war will not come to their doors. But their luck doesn't hold and an army of human soldiers comes and takes most of the population, paras and humans alike, prisoners. Kendry escapes capture at first cause she had been out running, but in her trying to rescue her mum she's captured again. But Axel, her friend and a gargoyle, does rescue her and a few other prisoners, but the majority of them including Kendry's mum are moved away somewhere else. Kendry wants to try and rescue her mom and after a bit of a debate with some of the humans and paras a rescue party is formed. It's clear from here that there are quite a few things that Kendry doesn't know about what's going on and possibly about herself.

On the beginning ParaWars showed a lot of potential with giving us a fresh perspective on the UF world but also seemed to be close to falling in some of the topics of the genre, but luckily the author managed to avoid the possible pitfalls and we have plenty of interesting characters, a lot of secrets and revelations, a steamy romance that starts as a friendship with a spark (a big one) but with no sign of insta-love.

Kendry is a 20 year old that has given up on the usual dreams since the ParaWars have wrecked how life used to be, but she tries to make the best of her situation, she's headstrong and brave and a bit reckless on occasion. She's got some spunk and she can hold her own since both her mum and dad taught her how to survive in the wild.

Axel is a gargoyle, and that in itself was part of the reason why I wanted to read this book, none of the books in UF I've read so far have had gargoyles! He befriends Kendry and once all the shit starts to hit the fan, he's there trying to protect her and help her as much as he can, which when it comes to revealing information, is not enough for Kendry's taste.

The dinamics between these two are fun, even if the hot and cold can border a bit on the "oh kiss already dammit!!" but well, the wait is quite worth it, what a first kiss those two share!

There's plenty of action, some characters you'll fall in love, some unexpected revelations, some despicable villains and plenty of character growth for Kendry.

I'm also very happy to report that the book doesn't end with a cliffhanger, the story is wrapped but we are left with an opening for the next book and the realization that the game is deeper than we thought!

Great new addition to the UF/Paranormal genre and very well deserved 4 stars!

I received a copy of Parawars for an honest review.

Kendry’s world is filled my almost every supernatural being known and not known to man and for a long time they stayed hidden. When the paranormals finally came out to the humans a war began and has continued to wage on. When the war comes to Kendry’s town and takes her mother with humans and paras alike Kendry and her best and only friend Axel team up with who’s left to save them. What starts as a rescue mission turns Kendry’s world upside down as secrets about who she truly is or what she could be are brought into the light and she finds out her father isn’t dead after all. With secrets and evil lurking behind every corner of Kendry’s new home Kendry and her friends become closer and closer and all the more determined to put an end to the raging war between the humans and the paras. The war it seems has a long way to go until it gets better and Axel and Kendry must also find out if their feelings for each other are worth the risk.

Gargoyle Hotness:
Wow first off hottie gargoyle who can kicks major ars, has an accent, and is so swoon worthy its awesome. While many times in the book he tries to ignore his feelings for Kendry I am so happy when he stopped holding back. He is definitely passionate about well everything he does and was such a match for Kendry that I couldn’t help but love him too.

Strong Female Protagonist:
Just the way I like them. Kendry is an awesome character to read about. Kendry is passionate and she will do and give everything of herself for the ones she loves. She proves this time and time again when she almost gets herself killed and gives up her mortality to save her family. Pretty freaking awesome I think. She also has a great sense of humor and an all-out honesty about her that just made her a great character to read about.

Speciseism:
You know racism and all the wars, death, destruction, and persecution that came along with that intolerance of people who are different? Well that is exactly what is going on between the paras and the humans. Intolerance is what drives the war between the paras and the humans to continue to fight sadly.

Unique and Original Worlds:
To say the world of Parawars is original and amazing is an understatement. What Caitlin Greer created in the pages of Parawars is nothing short of magic and I loved every second of it. There’s magic, major kick butt fight scenes, supernatural creatures raging from Odin to Minotaur’s to Gargoyles to Herne and The Wild Hunt. A-freaking-mazing to say the least and I could barely tear myself away from the pages of this amazing book.

Where’s the Second:
I need the second book like now so Caitlin Greer just so you know you need to get on that because I am seriously dying to know what will happen next to Kendry and Axel especially after that ending! Just saying pure torture!

All in all:
Fantastical in all its unique and amazing glory. I will definitely be reading the second book and I cannot wait. I hope everyone can check this awesome book out because it is definitely worth it.

ParaWars: Uprising was an action packed book. Every fantasy creature you can imagine is in this book. From minotaurs to werewolves to gargoyles to gods to fae…I could go on a very long time listing them are all in this book. Caitlin Greer has created a seamless book that merges fantasy, science fiction, and new adult together.

Kendry world changed two years ago when the Para came out of hiding and announced to the world that they exist, and soon after the world crumbled. Para and human militia are fighting along with those from both sides who just want to co-exist. Kendry and her mother have created a semblance of life in a small town until the day an army stormed her town and kidnapped her mother.

ParaWars had a bit of a rocky start for me. I was enjoying it, but it didn’t blow me away. But something happened about 1/3 of the way in and I was hooked, and time I finished this book I was amazed. The book’s best feature was the characters. I came to love each and every one of them Buc and Sam the minotaurs, Shelley one of the only other humans around and her friendship with Kendry, and Caleb and Thom’s bromance. One of the things that made this book great was the variety of characters and how each of the creatures worked together.

Kendry has a lot thrown at her very quickly once this book gets going. As strong as she was I’m glad the author didn’t get let it bounce off her. You see Kendry fall apart and react how a normal girl would. There are tears, anger, and emotions. Kendry states in the book that she had to grow up quickly after the Uprising, but she realized she is still acting like the teenager she was when it happened. You can see glimpses of this throughout the book, which made her character very real.

You’re right. I don’t understand. I’m young and stupid, and I behaved even younger and stupider than I am. I should be in college, partying and panicking about graduation in a year, not traipsing around the wilds of Virginia looking for my mom. I thought I’d done a lot of growing up, dealing with the world falling apart. I was wrong. I’ve been acting like a teenager, the same teenager I was when it all happened. But I’m not, and I haven’t been for a while.

The romance in ParaWars didn’t always take centre stage, which was nice, but when it did it shined. Axel is the best friend and hot new guy all wrapped up into one smoldering gargoyle. He was so stern and stone like towards Kendry, but it was blatantly obvious to everyone that he cared about her. Axel just wanted to protect her, not fall for her. Axel would do anything to protect Kendry from the dangers she knew nothing about. I loved the parts where he would fluff up his wings and surround her, protecting her from the danger. Even with Axel protecting her Kendry still fought with him over making the decisions concerning her without her input. She stood up for herself and made him realize she can defend herself too.

**I won a copy of this book through a Goodreads First Reads giveaway.
(I won this book through Goodreads, but I'm not entirely clear if I received a final version or an ARC. The winners were announced in October, but I received the book a few months after its publication date.)

3.5 stars.

I really enjoyed the story. It was easy to read and enjoyable - I would classify it under "brain candy" on my shelf. It contained an interesting love-story component between a human and a gargoyle, which is a nice break from the typical vampire/human love stories.

This book needs a fair amount of editing, which is why I mention that I wasn't sure what version of the book I received. I think a line editor would do wonders for this book, because the guts of the story are really good, it just needs a bit of finessing to really make the story pop. Additionally, there were quite a few errors in the book that a proofreader could easily clean up. With those things taken care of, though, I definitely think this book has potential.

I have now read two books by Caitlin Greer--ParaWars: UPRISING and EYRE HOUSE--and I can say without doubt that I'm a HUGE fan of Caitlin's writing. Her voice is strong and well-formed, and I'm a forever fan. I highly suggest grabbing a copy of every book she writes. She can't fail.

Now, what can I say about ParaWars: UPRISING . . . first of all, MORE. I need more Axel like yesterday! Please hurry up with Book 2, Cait, and if you need a beta reader, I'll humbly volunteer. In other words, GIMME!

This story took off in a flash and never slowed down. Though the romance aspect was strong--and O.M.G. the freaking sexual chemistry!--the romance was not the driving force of the story. The action was. ParaWars: UPRISING moves along at a wonderfully quick pace, never slowing down to lose the reader, and the adventure combined with the steamy romantic tension make for a truly exciting read.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. Well, everyone over 18, that is, because holy sex scenes, Batman!

P.S. I LOVE YOU, AXEL. *pushes all other book boyfriends aside*

I really, really liked this book. Enough so that I stayed up late to try to finish it, because I couldn't put the story down. With the para world and human world at war, it made for an interesting story. Greer was able to make a believable urban fantasy that included so many types of paranormals, including gargoyles. She has a refreshing take on supernaturals, one that makes this reader ready for the next in the series.
The dialogue is readily believable, though I did wonder if some of the paranormals would have a stiffer language. I enjoyed the tension created by the main characters, though at times I did want to yell at them.
One thing I would have liked for Greer to delve into a little deeper is the MC's mother. While she was pivotal to the storyline, her description was severely lacking. I understand the book was truly about the teen, and such, but it would have been nice to have started the book with a scene containing the mother and the MC. Or something like that. Regardless, the book holds its own quite well.

I rate this book 4 1/2 stars.

Once again, Greer tweaks NA and makes it unique. Eyre House had a Male MC, now she's delved into the paranormal in ParaWars.

I LOVE paranormal/ urban fantasy/ fantasy. OKay, I pretty much love all genres, but my favourite category (New Adult) is expanding into other genres WAY too slowly for my taste.

Not only is this book fresh and different, it's WELL-WRITTEN and interesting! Fast pacing, some familiar creatures, and some I haven't hung around with much in books before.

There were romantic elements (and the sexytimes were some of the hottest I've ever read)but they were secondary to the story itself, which I so appreciated.

If you're looking for sexy, action packed New Adult that ISN'T contemporary romance, then this is the book for you!

GRAB IT! I can't wait for book two!

I read an early version of this book and it was phenomenal! The way Greer approaches the paranormal is fantastic, and I LOVE Axel.

This book is kind of Disney's Gargoyles meets the Iron Druid Chronicles -- all the gods are real, and all the monsters with them, struggling to reclaim a space for themselves in the modern world. Kendry's role in this conflict is unclear to her, and she's been pulled in a lot of directions while she figures out what path she wants to take. But she definitely isn't letting anyone push her around in the meantime!

if you rooted for Elisa and Goliath to get together in the Disney Gargoyles cartoon, you'll definitely want to give this book a read!

Good luck putting this book down!

This book is so unique! The cover grabbed me right away, at least that's why I bought it in the first place, but the story hooked me and kept me reading. This novel doesn't just touch on one aspect of the supernatural, this novel encompasses ALL aspects of the supernatural. And the fact that the author was able to make a gargoyle sexy was so surprising! I loved how she created Axel, the sometimes stone, sometimes warm-blooded guardian with the "gravelly" voice. Ah, I just love him!
The story was fast-paced and engaging, and I can't wait for the next book in the series!

This was my first experience with Cait's writing, and I was blown away. It's beautiful and descriptive, and perfectly paced. I loved the plot of this--the action was intense, and the romance was.....ooooh my. Nobody on earth writes sexy like Cait Greer. The woman is a master.
