눈부신 안부

발표하는 작품마다 흔들림 없는 기량을 보여주며 평단과 독자의 신뢰를 한몸에 받고 있는 소설가 백수린의 장편소설. 2011년 데뷔한 이래 세 권의 소설집과 한 권의 중편소설, 짧은 소설들과 산문을 발표하는 동안 조급해하지 않고 장편의 그릇에 담고 싶은 이야기를 기다린 그가 등단 12년 만에 펴내는 첫 장편소설인 만큼 이 작품의 탄생이 더욱 반갑고 귀하다.

『눈부신 안부』는 2021년 봄부터 2022년 봄까지 계간 『문학동네』에 ‘이토록 아름다운’이라는 제목으로 절찬리에 연재되었다. 작가는 특유의 성실하고 꼼꼼한 소설쓰기로 연재와 개고에 임한 끝에 지극히 완성도 높고 아름다운 첫 장편을 자신의 이력에 추가하게 되었다.

백수린이 그간 이루어낸 이러한 성취가 집대성된 작품이다. 비극적 사건을 회피하려 했던 어린 시절의 기억으로 인해 스스로를 용서하지 못하던 한 인물이 어른이 된 후 한층 품 넓은 시야로 서툴렀던 자신을 받아들이는 과정을 좇는다.

차분하게 쌓여가는 서사 속에서 스스로의 힘으로 진정한 치유와 성장에 도달하려는 한 인간의 미더운 움직임이 백수린의 다정한 문장으로 그려진다. 읽어나가는 것만으로도 마음에 아름다운 결이 지고, 나를 둘러싼 세계가 확장되는 근사한 기분을 느낄 수 있는 이 작품은 지금까지의 백수린 소설세계의 결정판이라 할 수 있다.

1982년 인천에서 태어나 연세대 불문과를 졸업했다. 2011년 경향신문 신춘문예에 단편소설 「거짓말 연습」이 당선되면서 작품활동을 시작했다. 2014년 현재 서강대 불문과 박사과정에 재학중이다.

absolutely incredible! i couldn't put it down 🫶 i read an excerpt last year and was hooked on the initial cozy vibe of the main character moving to germany and getting close to her aunt, and purchased the actual book without knowing the actual plot. our mc (haemi - though her name is rarely mentioned) is introduced by her aunt, a 파독간호사 - korean nurse in germany - to a boy her age, hansu. hansu's mum, also a nurse, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and hansu wants to reunite her with her first love before she passes, and recruits haemi to translate her diaries in secret. as a trio (with a girl named lena), these three pre-teens work together whilst knowing it's all false hope, and haemi suddenly ends up moving back to korea, abandoning this project and cutting off contact with the two out of guilt. years later, having quit her job as a journalist and looking for purpose, haemi starts to reread the diaries, long after hansu's mother has passed. she notices things she didn't before, and ends up eventually making contact with this 'first love' (the big 'plot twist' being exactly as i'd hoped 👀). in the midst of this, she makes contact with an old college friend, who have denied their feelings for each other for years out of fear, but rekindle their relationship as they work on the mission together. i loved the scenes where haemi's aunt comes to live with her briefly and reintroduces her to how slow-paced and beautiful daily life can be, and the description of nature and the small moments in life throughout this whole book was beautiful. i cried when haemi was watching the father at the park teach his kid how to ride a bike without training wheels... i really felt like i was watching the world through her eyes. such a great start to the year to rediscover how amazing books can be 💘 10/10

A moving story about grief- loss of loved ones, loss of ones' dreams, loss of home/root. The story ends with quiet hint of hope and healing.

책을 덮고나서는 따뜻한 느낌이 들었다.
중간에 지루한 부분이 나오기도 했지만 전체적으로는 몰입감이 좋은 편이었다.
근데 개인적으로 에필로그에서의 마지막 반전이 뜬금 없다는 생각. (만약 다시 읽는다면 그 점을 생각하며 다른 시선으로 독서 할 수 있다는 게 장점인듯)

마음이 따뜻해지는, 여운이 남는 장편 소설. 타지에서 고생하는 이민자들의 마음, 소중한 누구를 잃은 가족의 마음, 그리고 깊이 그리워하는 인연에 대한 마음을 너무 아름답고 부드럽게 써서 감동이었다.
