Kitty held her husband close to her chest, covering his body with her own. She called for help, but none came. She stared down at the face she loved so well. “Don’t go, my darling. Not now. Not after all we’ve been through…”
1944. Vienna: Now a seasoned American spy, Kitty Larsson knows better than most that fighting the Nazis comes at a price. She’s worked undercover as an agent for the British and now does so for the Americans. She knows that doing what is right comes at the highest price...
When the OSS sends Kitty back to Vienna for an important assignment, she discovers that Edgar has been involved in a deadly mission. But it all goes wrong, and now her worst fears are realized. The Gestapo discovers who she is. They warn her husband’s life is now in her hands. If she doesn’t cooperate, he will die. Kitty’s secrets might be enough to save the man she loves… But what if they are lying…?
Fueled by her desire to do what is right, but also to save the man she loves, Kitty knows that she won’t be able to rest until she finds out what’s really happened to Edgar. Because, somewhere out there, she knows he has to be alive…
As the war rages, Kitty tries to think of a plan. Surely this isn’t where it all ends? She needs to know whether Edgar is safe—to hold him in her arms again!—but, to do that, will Kitty finally have to make the ultimate sacrifice?
An absolutely unputdownable, gripping and powerful story about love, courage and doing what is right in the midst of the darkness of World War 2. Perfect for fans of The Nightingale, My Name is Eva and All the Light We Cannot See.
Award-winning historical fiction! Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger is a Ukrainian-American who transplanted to Austria.
Born in 1969, she grew up in the culture-rich neighborhood of "Nordeast" Minneapolis and started her writing career with short stories, travel narratives, and worked as a journalist and managing magazine editor, before jumping the desk and pursuing her own writing and traveling.
Her books tackle David-vs.-Goliath themes with strong women battling for the Underdogs against a system, be it political, geographical, or industrial. Sometimes all three. "I enjoy discovering the good, the bad, and the ugly in my characters when they come into conflict," she says. "And all of my stories have been inspired by injustices I've discovered along my travels."
The RESCHEN VALLEY series is based on the South Tyrolean-Italian conflict during the interwar period and was inspired by her travels to the Reschen Lake reservoir.
Her collection of short stories, which "reads like a novel", SOUVENIRS FROM KYIV won the silver medal in the IPPY Book Awards 2020 and features six stories inspired by true accounts from WW2 Ukraine. THE WOMAN AT THE GATES is what she identifies as her magnum opus and is based on her family in WW2 Ukraine.
THE GIRL FROM THE MOUNTAINS was inspired by an anecdote about a Nazi family from Austria.
The DIPLOMAT'S WIFE trilogy (released in 2023) follows Kitty Larsson, a U.S. senator's daughter who marries an Austrian diplomat before the Anschluss, only to discover that his family is not what she thought they were. Part spy-thriller, part political-thriller, the series promises a wild romp as Kitty navigates the events of WW2 with her moral compass in hand.
And in 2024, Chrystyna's first middle-grade historical fiction novel will be published by Scholastic USA. Set in 2014 Sevastopol, SWIMMING WITH SPIES is about 12-year-old Sofiya who is forced to wrestle with her Ukrainian identity as Russians swarm her peninsula and annex it. When they threaten to seize the dolphins in her father's care, she races against time to save them from a brutal fate.
When Kitty Larsson was inserted into Vienna in 1944, to continue her spy work for OSS, she knew the danger. Spies sent in usually only lasted a matter of weeks before either death or capture. Could she last longer? Running her group of undercover operatives was stressful as she needed to be able to trust them. But when a new female face arrived at Kitty's work place, she was told to befriend her, get close to her and find out why she was there. While all this was happening, Kitty was desperate for news of her husband, Edgar. Was he still alive? His mission was far more dangerous than hers, and she didn't know what she'd do if he didn't survive.
As the months moved forward and the Allies came closer to them, and ending the war, the horrors escalated. The Germans had nothing to lose and killing was part of their lives. Kitty knew she needed to stay out of their hands - but when she was betrayed by someone she had trusted, Kitty knew her life was about to change once again...
The American Wife's Secret is the 3rd in The Diplomat's Wife series by Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger and it was amazing! Heartbreaking, bitter-sweet, poignant - Kitty's strength and determination was outstanding. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series and highly recommend The American Wife's Secret as well as the first two.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a series that I'd recommend you read in order to as each story builds upon the last. The author's writing style is one I really enjoy. When I am looking for a realistic and well researched historical fiction book, I can always count on this author to deliver. The book is absolutely unputdownable to me. After reading and following Kitty and Edgar's story I knew I had to keep reading each book in the series. I was holding my breath as I read. You could feel the tension crackling in the air, will she be caught, will Edgar stay safe? Kitty has been a long-time spy, putting herself in life-threatening situations. She's on a runaway train of events and there's no brakes. There's a lot of action and suspense. She doesn't trust the Nazi's. When she is captured, she is told they will kill Edgar if she doesn't spill what she knows. Is it true, is Edgar even alive? I was rooting for Kitty and Edgar's character's the whole way through in this series. They put themselves in so much danger. Doing what is right isn't easy all the time. I applaud Kitty for her courage during the darkest of times and her straightforward attitude. Sometimes you have to face the dark to receive the light and she is a perfect example of this. Her powerful love and devotion kept her going. The author's writing style is so realistic that I could picture it as I read like a film running through my mind. Mesmerizing, I eagerly look forward to more amazing books by the author. This brought all my emotions to the forefront.
Pub Date 20 Oct 2023 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
The 3rd book in the Diplomat's wife series and her work undercover for the OSS has really taken its toll on Kitty. Separated from her husband Edgar due to his work Kitty is feeling at her most vulnerable and tired of the war. But at this end stage, the work she has to do is still as intensive and tense as at the beginning. The book is written so well that you really feel all her frustrations and fears. It's a story of underlying love and courage with strong characterisation. I've loved the entire series. I received this advanced copy from Netgalley and Bookouture but am under no obligation to leave my review
I felt as if I’d been put through the emotional wringer while reading this book. Kitty finds out something devastating about Edgar which broke my heart. I thought no, not him. He wouldn’t do that. I didn’t accept his excuse for his actions. The reading is tense because it involves the camps and what was really going on, always difficult to read about. But when the end of the book arrived I couldn’t believe what happened, I was bereft. After all heartache, time spent apart, all the stuff Kitty and Edgar endured…… No, I don’t accept the ending. I rewrote it in my mind to suit my fancy. This one shredded me. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
This final book in The Diplomat's Wife series slammed me like a freight train. It is that powerful and is an exceptional ending for the series. The story picks up in September 1943 and the war is taking a toll on Kitty. She is exhausted, disillusioned, and more fragile than we've ever seen her. I admire the author for presenting this realistic version of Kitty, not as untouchable by war but as a woman who has been battered by her experiences and personal losses. Still determined but changed and running on empty.
Pay attention from the very first page because the spy game has entered its most complicated and dangerous phase. Trust no one, no one but Kitty. By page 20, the tension level was already dangerously high for my blood pressure and it never dropped until the end. The author's extensive research of this period of the war is impressive as is her ability to seamlessly incorporate historical events and people into Kitty's story. I enjoy reading a series but there is always the fear that the next book will be a disappointment, right? Each book in this one was better than the previous one and this last book is phenomenal. Completely unpredictable and heartbreakingly realistic as it ends with Germany's surrender and the first rays of hope. Five stars simply aren't enough for this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author for the opportunity to read the digital ARC. All opinions & the review are my own.
The American Wife's Secret by Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger is the third in The Diplomat's Wife series set during WWII. What a series it is! This author is one of my auto-read authors, no need to even read the synopsis. Her gorgeous writing is special indeed, always thoughtful and insightful. I love that her stories are unpredictable with suspense lurking around every corner. There is love, sorrow, grief, danger, determination and hope. Always hope.
In the 1940s Kitty Larsson and her husband Edgar Ragatz were on crucial missions including spy networks and the Resistance which contributed to changing the course of WWII. Though the cost was extremely high and death was always a possibility, they were fiercely loyal to the cause and were appalled at the terror rained down by the Nazis. Dangerous situations were commonplace and nothing was as it seemed. Including people. Few were exempt from atrocities and Kitty was mentally and physically tortured. She was a woman of extraordinary cunning and determination but suffered for it. She and Edgar had to make impossible snap decisions and choices. That ending, though!
If you seek an engrossing top-notch Historical Fiction series with zip and substance, this is what you need. More than reading, it is an immersive experience. The words are written like the loveliest haunting music which held me captive throughout to the breathtaking denouement at the end. My heart pulsed with anticipation and I found myself on a rollercoaster of emotions. While not an easy read due to the subject matter, it is an astonishing look at unique perspectives during one of the most heinous times in history. It is obvious the historical details were thoroughly researched and emotions were captured beautifully. What makes it so harrowing and realistic is that real people lived scenarios such as these. Bravo to true heroes and heroines!
My sincere thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this wonderful, wonderful novel.
This book was so interesting! This was my 1st WWII historical fiction novel, and I can say I will definitely be reading more. This is book #3 in the author's The Diplomat's Wife series but can be read as a standalone. I will be going back to read 1 & 2😊
In 1944, Kitty Larsson, an American spy working with the OSS, is sent to Vienna, Austria on an important assignment. She knows from past experiences that fighting the Nazis comes with a price. While trying to accomplish her mission, she learns her husband Edgar is also on a dangerous mission. When the Gestapo discovers who she really is, they use her husband as leverage. She knows she has to remain silent but also wants to save the man she loves. How much is she willing to sacrifice?
This was a gripping read that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was immersive and very well written. You can tell the author did extensive research, and I definitely appreciated that. The suspense was a page turner, and I was shocked by some of the outcomes. I loved Kitty. She was a strong, courageous female MC who went through some very intense situations. There were some heartbreaking scenes, which are expected with a WWII historical fiction novel. I would recommend this book, especially to historical fiction fans. The author's notes are also a definite must-read.
Kitty Larsson spent many years as an undercover agent for the British and had seen so much life loss over the years. When she is captured and her husband Edgar is missing she feels helpless. She is told by the Nazis that they will surely kill him if she does not cooperate and do exactly as they say. Kitty doesn’t trust the Nazis at all, is Edgar still alive, or are they using her to get what they want? She knows in her heart that she cannot give up and she must hold on to the hope of knowing that one day she will see Edgar once again.
The American Wife’s Secret written by author Chrystyna Lucy’s-Berger is a wonderful continuation to the series The Diplomat’s Wife. This heartbreaking, outstanding story was unputdownable for me. I couldn’t stop reading until I got to the very last page. This story had my heart racing and my tears flowing. I loved the character of Kitty so much, she was completely relatable. The sacrifices that she and her husband Edgar made were devastating and I couldn’t imagine how difficult their decisions were. I loved this series from start to finish. This book can be read as a standalone, but my suggestion is to read the entire series. I highly recommended this phenomenal story.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this amazing book in the series oh my word how to put into words my feelings about this book its stressful and intense and at times i had to put the book down and leave it because of how i was feeling, and we know that what was happening in that book at times was based on truth and what happened to everyone during that war its not an easy book to read but man its a fitting end to the trilogy and i will admit to having tears in my eyes at the end brilliantly written and flawlessly done i cant wait to read the next book by this author
The American Wife’s Secret is the third and final book in The Diplomat’s Wife series by Chrystyna Lucyk Berger. This new story picks up directly where book two left off with that very dramatic and shocking conclusion which left the reader with so many unanswered questions. I did find that the first chapter would probably have been confusing for those who hadn’t read the previous two books or if you weren’t familiar with intelligence during World War Two. Having finished the book it can be read as a standalone but being 100% honest to fully appreciate and understand what a fantastic, resilient and remarkable character Kitty Larson is I would recommend going back and starting with the first book, The American Wife.
I found the book as a whole took quite some time to get going and for things to come together and for pieces of the puzzle to fall into place. But once it did, my god, it became a complete page turner and I couldn’t read quick enough to discover what would happen and if I would get that ending I had so desperately wanted since book one. Yes, you need to have your full wits and concentration about you as you read as there is a lot of information given and characters presented but stick with it and the payoff is more than worth it.
Kitty has been married to Edgar, an Austrian diplomat, for several years. He is currently working undercover making the Germans believe he is on their side. Whereas really he is gathering information in order to see the fall of Hitler and the Nazi’s. He is an incredible character but I always felt we never got enough of him in the books. Just as Kitty craves time with him, it never seems to materialise but that is the nature of the war and his role in it. Their separation only makes the scenes where they can briefly be together although under a shroud of danger, tension and suspicion although the more real and heartfelt. The love, devotion and connections they share just become all the more apparent and have you rooting for a happy ending for the pair.
Edgar flits in and out of this book and I desperately wanted things to turn out ok but for the vast majority of it Kitty is on her own working on her most important and crucial mission to date. I wanted her backbone and strength to be there for her but there is a much bigger game at play, and they need to be apart in order to hopefully be together for the long term.
Kitty really comes into her own in this book. She is put through the mill and plunges the depths to the lowest of lows. She is firmly trapped in the currents of war and throughout the book she is very much swimming against the tides and at any moment may drown. There are numerous twists and turns as she is tasked by the OSS-Office of Strategic Services, to once again return to Vienna where she will head up Resistance activities in the city which has been occupied by the Germans since the start of war. There is an awful lot that needs to be put in place before agents from other countries can come to the city and Kitty is the woman to do it. But with every turn, plan and manoeuvre there always seems to be those that are one step ahead of her and at no point can she trust anyone. That’s what I really enjoyed about the book. The author gave us information and when I read I take things as they are presented at face value but with this story you really shouldn’t. Not one character can be trusted it’s up to Kitty to weed out the good from the bad. The ones who are loyal and the ones you will do anything to betray her and the Resistance group she is working with.
No doubt about it Kitty is tested to her limits time and time again and her vulnerabilities and weaknesses are cleverly shown by the author. She is like a chameleon who regularly changes her appearances in order to work with and infiltrate the sectors of the Nazi party she would rather not know about. I loved that she was so dogged and determined that she would always do her best and never give up even when the worst fate befalls her as mentioned in the blurb. I do think the blurb gave a bit too much away as this occurred very much towards the later stages of the book and there wasn’t as much focus on this until the end stages. A different blurb would have added an element of mystery and surprise for readers. Instead, it was like you were waiting for this point to occur as you read from the beginning. Although I will say when this point was reached I felt the book really sprung into action and all the ground work that had been laid and which led to this juncture was more than worth it.
I did feel at certain times well before the climax and dramatics were reached that the plot did become a bit confusing and that there was an overload of information in terms of groups and technical operations. I understand there was a much bigger operation at work but for readers new to the series or even for those of us that have been with Kitty since the beginning a little refresher or explanation as to who groups were perhaps placed as a note at the beginning would have been helpful. Although, I did appreciate the authors end note explaining whether certain characters were real or fictional and what groups existed and did not.
All in all The American Wife’s Secret was a satisfying conclusion to Kitty’s story. That ending I didn’t see coming and it was brave of the author to go for it but in a way it does pave the path for another book. As the author herself mentions in her notes she has an idea for another story featuring Kitty but is their the appetite for it? Well, I certainly think that there is and will be looking forward to reading it if she chooses to go ahead and write it. Kitty and Edgar make so many sacrifices for each other and to see the end of the war and whether these are worth it or not you will have to read this terrifying yet gripping story with Kitty being a character you certainly won’t forget in a hurry.
The American wife’s Secret is the last book in the Diplomat’s Wife series, and for me it is the best book of the series. When you start reading a series there’s always this nagging feeling that book two or three, or any following one, won’t be as good as the first one, this is not the case here, every following book is better than the previous one. On this book we find that the war has taken its toll on Kitty, she is tired of it, but there’s still a lot more work to do. She’s also disillusioned with her husband, when she finally finds out that he is still alive, but also weary of the future, without knowing how to live a normal life with or without him, after the war, if they actually survive the war. We find a more mature and experienced Kitty, working as a leader in Vienna resurrecting the O5 spy ring and making it harder for the Nazis to advance in their plans. This books is the densest and hardest to read on the series because of the content in it, we read about the camps, about torture and death, but because of the way that Chrystyna writes, the mastery of her historical and physical places and her attention to details this is a book that is hard to put down even when reading the hard subjects described in it. Because of all of her experiences Kitty has become a master spy, one that knows what can happened if a tiny mistake is made, and knows that discovery, torture and death are her constant companions, this makes reading this book so engrossing and will make your blood pressure go up following her activities. The ending of the book, I don’t want to give any spoilers but oh no! That was a heartache I wasn’t expecting. I would love to read more about Kitty if in a future, hopefully not so distant, Chrystyna decides to write a follow up of the story. This is a historical fiction series not to be missed.
A brilliant conclusion to an amazing trilogy. Kitty Larsson is an American who is swept into the ambiguities and cruelties of the II World War. Married to a high-profile Austrian diplomat, she witnessed the impacts of the first years of the war in Vienna and organized a resistance movement, first in Austria and later in France, working for British and later French officials. In this last installment, Kitty is sent back to Vienna to help infiltrate american agents. The danger is high and she goes full circle into the city where she was so happy and so sad. A tragic conclusion in a great story that shouldn't be missed.
A well-written book about the resistance movement in the Second World War. It's both intense and tragic with a courageous heroine at its center. However, I recommend reading the first two books in the series before reading this one, as the story will probably make more sense. The narrative was hard to follow at times with many characters and places that were only introduced briefly, and backstories that were not clearly defined. But I did thoroughly enjoy the tidbits of historical facts embedded in the narrative and recommend this series to lovers of historical fiction.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the advance copy. This is my honest and voluntary review.
The American Wife's Secret by Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger is Book 3 in the series titled The Diplomat's Wife. The main character, Kitty Larsen, is an American married to an Austrian in the late 1930's shortly before Hitler and the Nazi's come in to take over control of Austria. How Kitty and her husband each respond to the new government and then WWII when it breaks out - as well as their own relationship - is filled with twists and turns throughout the series of 3 books. While Books 1 and 2 are filled with tragedies and suspense, Book 3 went to the extreme with plotlines, characters, and drama that would have had me biting my nails if I were a nail biter. However, I particulary liked the way the author portrayed Kitty's struggles with her emotions and the decisions she was required to make as she experienced fatigue, frustration, and some of the most harrowing, and horrific acts of espionage and the resulting consequences. The descriptions of Kitty's thoughts and feelings as she struggled to perform her dangerous duties during a time of war made me feel as though Kitty was a real woman and not just someone who could just work heroically without even a pause. She actually felt fear, despair, pain, and sorrow. And yet, she did carry on and she did survive. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books set in Europe during WWII with strong females as the main character.
This is the third in The Diplomat’s Wife series, and I have loved them all. I highly recommend The American Wife, and An American Wife in Paris as well. Kitty and Edgar’s story continues.
1944: Vienna
Kitty Larson has worked many years as an undercover agent for the British and now she is working for the Americans. The price she paid was heart-wrenching. The OSS sends Kitty to Vienna and she realizes her husband Edgar has been involved in a dangerous mission. Now her husbands life is on the line and she must do whatever it takes to protect him.
Another gripping novel by Lucyk-Berger. I hope she continues this series. She is another go-to new to me author this year and I look forward to more historical fiction novels by her.
I adore Kitty Larsson and was thrilled to continue along on her adventure with her. I saw the author’s note at the back, which said there could potentially be another book if there’s interest… it’s me - I’m interested! I just love this series and these characters.
This book was the best yet in the series. I thought it was a little bit easier to follow than the others, too. A wonderful read all-around.
Oh my goodness! I had to wait a few days before I could write this review. I was gobsmacked by the time I had absorbed the last word on the last page. The third book in The Diplomat’s Wife series, Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger has once again written an amazing story. Her gift with words is astounding. You will be pulled into the pages of the book from the first word and will be held on for a scary and thrilling ride to the very end. Kitty is such a wonderful character. Her strength and dedication are to be admired. You will experience Kitty’s struggles with exhaustion and not knowing who she can trust. But her determination to do the job asked of her will have you cheering her on as she experiences one trial after another. While the author shows what an outstanding individual Kitty is, she also allows you to see that she is human and second guesses herself over and over. Yet her resilience shines through. The author has done an amazing amount of research and demonstrates aspects of WWII that are not typically covered in historical fiction books of that time period.
Hang onto your seats as you are taken on a journey through multiple countries, meeting contacts who display a willingness to help defeat Hitler’s reign of terror, experience the horrors endured by those who are willing to sacrifice themselves in order to defeat Hitler, agonize with Kitty as she faces new challenges each day. This story is of heartbreak, love, courage, unpredictability, dedication, danger, grief, and loss. But throughout the pages, there is still the feeling of hope. And that’s what gets Kitty through the years, the months, the days, the minutes.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookoutre for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
This is an amazing and well written book. In fact, the whole series is a must read. The author does her research to make this historical fiction series historically accurate. The characters truly come to life and leave me in tears. I highly recommend this book, series, and author.
The American Wife’s Secret is the 3rd book in The Diplomat's Wife Series. This is a story that will keep you reading late into the night guessing what will happen next. It is a heartbreaking spy novel taking place during WWII. While the first two books in the series were great, book 3 was even better. The plot line was unpredictable filled with suspense, danger and hope. I found the 3 books in the series followed each other and should be read in order.
Kitty Larsson the main character, continues her work as a spy for the OSS running a group of undercover agents. After being betrayed by someone she trusts, can Kitty escape either death or capture? Kitty was a very well developed character that seemed real showing fear, despair, sorrow and pain.
I highly recommend this book to everyone. It will stay with me a long time. Can’t wait for what the author writes next.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this great book.
This is a well researched story that takes place during World War 2. Kitty finds a friend to occupy her time, while her husband is busy. When war breaks out, Kitty is caught between her Jewish best friend and her husband. This is a heartbreaking decision for Kitty. Is she willing to lose her husband or her best friend? The plot kept me reading long into the night. Definitely recommend. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.
‘War was a jealous mistress’ I could never truly be a spy – I’d never be able to tell which one is true! ‘One bad egg doesn’t mean everyone’s involved.’ ‘One bad egg stinks up everything.’
Nor to live my life like this: To be systematically recreated and reshaped by other people. Always on autopilot – things move so quickly that there’s no time to think and it’s too risky to second guess oneself.
A crucial takeaway, regardless of our circumstances: ‘Live to tell’ That’s what my late father-in-law was told as a teen during the Holocaust. He was in a march from one camp to another and fell down off to the side. Two men picked him up and told him that he needed to live, to tell what happened to them all, and to have a family (as revenge). Every single one of his descendants is in Israel; all but his sons were born here.
This book is the last in the series of three. Story is heartbreaking and moving. It was hard to put it down. Protagonist, Kitty , is working as a spy on the enemies land. She has to do difficult job before she would be able move to safety. But can she succeed, if it seems that somebody is working against her? The ending of the book was different than I expected and because of it probably more realistic. I recommend this book for all who likes books from WWII with spy theme.
Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger has written another great page-turner that you won't be able to put down until you have finished reading it. Each book in the series just gets better!
This was a difficult read. Uncover agents, no matter how well trained, never knew what they would run into, who could betray them, and when the Gestapo might suspect something was fishy. When you are dependent on a large network, so much can go wrong. If a link is broken, you may not know in time to change course. And when finally, you think you are safe… Follow the daring men and women who tirelessly gave of themselves to help bring down Nazi Germany in WWII.
This was an intense book. There’s several surprises along the way. I was blown away by the ending. I’m still surprised by it. I had not read the previous books in this series so I did feel like I just stepped into the middle of the story. Definitely suggest you read the books one and two first.
The American Wife's Secret: Epic, heartbreaking and unputdownable World War 2 fiction (The Diplomat's Wife Book 3), my third read from author Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger. World War 2 is in full swing and Kitty is back in Europe, The blurb says unputdownable I received a free Kindle copy of The American Wife (The Diplomat's Wife and the books are, I read the last without putting either one down. Book 1) back in April and got An American Wife in Paris (The Diplomat's Wife #2) from Kindle Unlimited so I could read the whole series back-to-back-to-back. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author, next up A Bad Egg (Mike and Maddie Mysteries #3). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018.
After receiving an ARC for this book, I decided to read the first two books in the series, and wow they were so good! I've read the whole series in the space of a week. This is the 3rd book in the series. This follows Kitty Larsson, who is now a seasoned spy working for the OSS. She is sent to Austria, where she lived when she first married Edgar. She's setting up a new spy ring through the OSS. Edgar is working on an important mission. As she is working on her mission, she starts worrying as members of their spy cell are caught and arrested. Is there a spy in their midst? Will the Nazis discover her and the others and if so will she be able to keep her secrets if she can save Edgar the man she loves? All I can say is wow what a read! It's an in-depth perspective of what it might have been like to be in deep as a spy and how it might wear you down. The writer does an amazing job of drawing rich characters and taut, tense storylines. She did a great job of wrapping up the series and I'd love a sequel to see where the character of Kitty goes from here in the post wpost-war The whole series drew me in from the start and I'll be thinking about it and the character Kitty for a long, long time!
Many thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture, and the author for the opportunity to read the digital ARC. All opinions & the review are my own.
Another triumph from this brilliant author. Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger's writing is sublime and Kitty Larsson is one of my favourite literary characters ever. This book is the third in the trilogy, but I really hope that it's not the last we will see of Kitty.
As the war rages, Kitty is physically and mentally exhausted. She has proved herself over and over to be a competent and loyal spy and in this book, Kitty leaves Istanbul and eventually finds herself back in Vienna, where her spy mission started, years before. As the rest of the story comes full circle, Kitty remembers her old life; newly married to Edgar, with wonderful friends - Judith, Artur, Big Charlie and the rest of their tight group, most of them killed, some missing and some helping Kitty in the fight against the Nazis. Edgar is participating in a highly dangerous mission and Kitty knows she may never see him again.
When she is betrayed, Kitty endures horror after horror and this was so hard to read, however it was a harsh reality of this sickening war and Chrystyna has clearly carried out extensive research in order to portray the events in such detail, reminding us that we must never forget.
As the Nazis are defeated and the war in Europe ends, Kitty is broken, physically and mentally. She begins to try to rebuild her life, post-war, but of course, war never leaves a happy ending.
5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger and Bookouture for an ARC in return for an honest review.
The American Wife’s Secret is the riveting conclusion of The Diplomat’s Wife trilogy by Chrystyna Lucyk-Berger. It is set in the closing years of World War 2 and concludes shortly after the end of the war. Once again Kitty finds herself in more harrowing situations, but does not back down or give in. Her tenacity continues to shine through. She is on a mission and will see it through. Throughout the series Kitty has matured into a likable character who is easy to admire for her steadfastness, loyalty, and tenacity. She does not take the easy way out in any of the situations she faces. The struggle and tension of Kitty and Edgar’s relationship and marriage, which has been a theme throughout the series, is also resolved in The American Wife’s Secret.
The American Wife’s Secret does not shy away from the awful reality and complexities of war, yet at that same time expresses the many human emotions involved. It is easy to read in terms of vocabulary and construction but is emotionally heavy and draining. It is captivating and hard to put down, just like the two previous books. These three books pack a heavy emotional punch. They are not easily forgotten.
This trilogy is really well written and full of emotion and soul. The Diplomat’s Wife series puts a human face and feelings to the atrocities of the those awful years during World War 2. I have struggled in writing this review, not because of the quality of the writing in any of the books, but because I have found it hard to write without giving away too much of the story and because I do not want to trivialize how so many people suffered. I hesitate to say that I enjoyed the series because I can not conceive of enjoying war and the awful effects it had on so many people. I do have to say that these books are a powerful read.
After reading all the books in The Diplomat’s Wife trilogy I can continue to say that I will read any book that Chrystyna writes. She is a skillful and powerful writer.
I received an ARC of The American Wife’s Secret. All opinions expressed here are solely my own.
This is the 3rd book in the series which I highly recommend. It is full of suspense, surprises, action and you never know what is going to happen next. Kitty and her husband are both spies and they both are in extreme danger working against the Nazis. The storyline is just so interesting and you think there probably were people who were doing just what Kitty was doing during this difficult time in history. I really enjoyed all the characters and the entire storyline. I highly recommend reading all three of the books.
