***I won this book through the First Reads Giveaway program***

[May contain spoilers]

First of all, let me just say that I applaud anyone who can sit down, write a novel, and have the courage to get it published and send it out into the world, knowing that some people will love it while others will hate it. It takes a very brave person to do that.

However, that being said, I didn't really like this book for several reasons. First of all, because I didn't like it that much, I will probably never invest the time or money in reading the next one, and the ending of this first book leaves A LOT of MAJOR PLOT POINTS unresolved. And I am the type of person who, even if I am not enjoying something, I am going to see it through to the end simply because I started it, so by God, I'm going to finish it. However, finishing this particular book did nothing to wrap up anything for me.

The concept of the book itself was okay. At times, while reading it, however, I felt as though several of the scenes were adapted straight from the Twilight and Vampire Diaries books. One girl being fought over by three gorgeous guys of various supernatural statuses (two of them being brothers, no less)... sadly it has been done a little too often to have an impact on me anymore. There is actually a paragraph towards the end of the book that sums up the whole thing for me:

"Well, Grandpa Henry once told me that when asked a question, it is always wise to find the meaning of words I don't understand, before coming up with an answer. In this instance, it seems I don't know the difference between love, lust, and infatuation. It is possible to lust after the one you are in love with, is it not? Also, possible for that someone you are in love with to be the object of your infatuation, and to lust over the object of your infatuation, which might be the love of your life. Is it not also true that these three things can exist separately? Lust for one person, infatuated by the other or be in love with another?"

I'm sorry, but what?! It was paragraphs like that one there that made the book unappealing to me.

Also, a lot of the scenes felt forced, and the book would suddenly go from one extreme to the other with no warning. For instance, in one second, lips would be about to meet and then BAM! "F*-k you! Why don't you just f*-k off!" I have no problem with conflict or romance, but sometimes these scenes would happen not only on the same page, but in the same paragraph. It's hard to adjust to such rapid plot changes.

One of the worst instances of this happens on pages 234 and 235. The main character, Alexandra, is kissing one of her suitors, and it is a sweet moment. Then another of her suitors says, "Slow down, Alex. ... It almost looks as if you're trying too hard." And that morphs into a huge "F*-k you!" "No! F*-k you!" battle that lasts two and a half pages.

Finally, one of the things that bugs me most about this novel is the lack of editing put into it. Actually, that is unfair. I'm not sure if it is a lack of editing, per se. However, at times -- especially during the very 'exciting' or 'emotional' parts -- the grammar and sentence structure gets a bit... bad. In those places, the book reads almost like it has been translated poorly from another language.

An example (any grammatical or spelling mistakes are verbatim): "It's not long ago when I finished a glass of champagne, and yet I feel thirsty. So thirsty, I can barely stand it. No waiters seem to be around. I don't want to hunt for a drink, and so I wait patiently for a waiter."

Another (any grammatical or spelling mistakes are verbatim): "My mouth water as he moves his lips from my cheek, stopping just above my top lip. In breathless anticipation, I inhale his scent and move my hesitate lips to touch his."

I realize things like this are small and inconsequential, but I am a professional editor. That is what I do for a living. I edit books before they are published specifically to avoid problems like that. So when I see mistakes like these, it really detracts from the reading experience.

Overall, I was disappointed with this book; perhaps because I was so excited to read it. Anytime I build something up in my mind to be really good, it usually disappoints me. If I happen to win a copy of the second book, I'll read it just to tie up all the lose ends, but I won't be spending money on it.

*I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review*

The Ring by Mantissa Creed is the first book in the series Cursed. My hat’s off to anyone who creates a story purely from their imagination. I applaud the effort. By and large the first half of the book is very slow, but it does pick up in the second half. The story had potential and overall the premise is interesting. However, some serious cutting could have made it a much more enjoyable read.

I found myself pushed out of the story by numerous distractions including frequent errors, long descriptions, misused words, and a reoccurring conflict between the MC and her mother about what she is. A good editor would have helped this MS immensely.

The use of similar names, numerous nicknames, and the like were confusing and unnecessary. The author was not served by introducing Zackery’s girlfriend as Mimi and then having the MC wonder where Madeline was. She didn't know Mimi was Madeline. This could be a common nickname in England or Australia, but I’m not sure every reader would make that connection. To most, I feel, it would be viewed as an error. Continuity errors like that popped up throughout the book.

The exit of the boyfriend Chan had no emotional depth. I didn't believe she felt he was the love of her life. A few memories or thoughts of him mourning his loss would have served the MS instead of pondering his last words which were way too cryptic in my opinion.

After the introduction of Zachary things got a little interesting, but again the breadcrumbs that would have kept me reading were either muddled, confusing, or nonexistent. Around the middle, there was a huge info dump that would have been better served if it were doled out throughout the beginning of the book. Little hints would have kept the pages turning rather than explaining everything all at once.

The treatment of the male possible love interests wasn't believable. Nor was the explanation for Chan and his identity issues. Too coincidental. Major plot points were left unresolved. I don’t mind the cliffhanger. It’s the lack of any resolution at the end. Luckily, and excerpt from Book 2 was included, but should a reader really get the resolution from the excerpt? Why not put it in Book 1 and give the reader a little satisfaction?

The quotation marks were missing, open and then closed with no dialogue, and included action tags when they should have been closed. The author would be better served by taking a moment to read for the opening and closing of her quotation marks. It pulled me out of the story repeatedly and could be easily fixed.

The descriptions of clothing were cumbersome. I tend to favor books that follow Stephen King’s advice – if I want to read a description of clothes, I can always get a J. Crew catalog. The long descriptions of various outfits didn't add anything to the story, if anything they took away from it.

The MC seemed complacent, happy to watch all the men fighting over her, while still unsure where her feelings lay. I found her unlikable because of this.

There were many scenes that do not push the story forward and could have been deleted. Nonetheless, I appreciate anyone who has the guts to pursue a dream and put themselves out there. A good editor would have made this novel more enjoyable for this reader.

This was one of the best books I have read in a while, packed with great dialogue, detailed descriptions, emotion filled - it is all you can ask for. The ending came really quick which I don't know if that is a good thing or bad but either way I enjoyed the book.
My favourite character of course was Zachary, deep down I think (SPOILER) the vangel may be Channing, I don't even know it just has a lot of mystery and suspense and drama - when you think one thing is about to happened another thing happens which is what kept me glued to it since I bought it yesterday, luckily it came early because of my pre-order.
It is not only a love story but a comedy and mystery, it has a bit of everything so no one is left out at all, I am sure everyone will have their own part they love in the book...and it is sexy.
Alexandra, the main character is such a character, different from females in books nowadays and she challenges the reader which is what I like - who wants everything given to them on a plate anyway? The writer has also created this world, her own world, everything is original.
This book is not just a novel but a piece of art, something everyone should own on their library and not to mention the cover is beautiful.
Everyone was just trying to get a read on the train yesterday!
My only upset is the fact that the second book is not in my hand but at least we got a first chapter preview of the next book, I guess :)

A well-written story with an intriguing plot that screams originality. There are vampires, werewolves, angels and special mixes in between called hybrids! Plus others beings. What more can you hope for?!
The main character Alex(Lexie), knows that her mother is keeping something important from her. Lexie decides to take it upon herself to find out just what it is and when she does, everything that she once knew about herself, her family and her friends, are changed forever.
The characters are all unique individuals and but I have to say that my favorite character is Zachary because his character is mysterious, yet fun!
I went through this story like hurricane in full force! It was such a fun, entertaining and thought-out story that I went ahead and bought the second book: The Vangel! I can't wait to see what happens in this book

I want to tell the author to rewrite that book blurb. It does not reflect the awesome that is in the book or the style of writing that greets the reader on the first page. The writing style of this book is one that grabs you hard and does not let go. The voice is first person perfect. I have seldom read first person done so well. The pace of the book is fast and the creatures within are exceptionally well developed and unique. But that book blurb… it is awful compared to the beauty within the book. Oh, also, awesome cover art.

One of my initial reads. Don't remember much of it now, but loved it back then. Made my stomach knot and my eyes wet. Guilty pleasure.

This was a good read, and I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!

Plot – 5/5

I have read many stories about people discovering they have secret powers and/or are not completely human, so I was a bit worried this was going to get a bit cliché. Instead, I really appreciated the bits of originality and creativity displayed. I especially enjoyed the different take on well-known fantasy creatures, e.g. vampires, angels, etc.

Pace – 4/5

Though I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it started off a bit slow. Considering the length, a slow start can often turn me off, but it picked nicely as the story went it on. It literally began a bit laboriously, but was a page-turner by the end. Now that the story is actively in progress, I don’t think slowness will be a problem at all in the next book.

Description/Narration – 4/5

If I was forced to choose, I think this section is the story’s weakest area. Based on how long it took me to read it, I predict it to be around 140,000 words. I think a tighter edit could cut it down by at least ten percent without altering the meat/foundation of the story, because some sections seemed a bit too detailed, especially in the beginning. The extra detail isn’t to the point where you start skipping large sections, but you do get the stray thought of, “Why do I need to know this?” every once in a while. With that said, I did enjoy the style of narration the author chose to go with.

Characters – 5/5

Out of all the books I’ve read in the past couple of months, I enjoyed the characters from this story the most. Even though there were quite a few of them, none of them came across as unrealistic, one-dimensional or overly annoying. That alone has me applauding! I am also impressed that the author has created a love square (yes, I mean square), and all of the guys are unique from one another, and have relatable faults and merits. So far, there are no caricatures. Bravo!

Dialogue – 5/5

Nothing about the dialogue was life changing, but it flowed well and seems believable, so I feel no reason to award any less than five stars. All of the characters had a distinct voice, and I could easily tell who was speaking even when I wasn’t directly told.

In Conclusion – I awarded this story 23 out of a possible 25 points, or the equivalent to 4.6 stars out of five. This rounds up to five stars, and I totally feel comfortable rating this story as such. I can’t wait to check out the next book.

Overall, this was an entertaining, if slow, story. I suggest a ‘look inside’ before taking this one on. If the style suits you, you’ll love it, if you don’t it’ll be rather a slog, unfortunately I found myself in the second camp even though I’m a paranormal fan. A quick look shows the sequel is even longer, so make sure this style suits you before taking a step into Ms Creed’s world.
The story is set in a world identical to ours in terms of food, clothing and past times, even music, time frames and seasons. Vehicles have different names, but are essentially the same as what is currently available. I struggled to understand the locations as I tried to work out where in ‘our’ world it was set, until the info dump in the middle proposed a three city state, which are thousands of miles apart. So not the same geography at all, even though other things are identical. Various plot holes detracted from my enjoyment, and despite her trials, I found myself unsympathetic to the MC, Alexandra due to her callous treatment of both her friend Emily and Sean.
The language used by the eighteen year old character was particularly complex, describing her feelings lyrically in terms of stars and moons. I also had trouble believing the backstory told to the MC came as a complete surprise. Surely a major flood and war within the last two hundred years would have been known to her? I know this is the intended timeframe as the Vanangel, present at the battle, is around two hundred.
Despite these niggles, I did want to find out how the MC sorts out her feelings for the three men, although I really found myself hoping that they all dump her for leading them all on, and using poor Sean from the start.
I don’t mind cliff hangers, especially in a series, but I expected some sort of resolution, even if it is a minor one at the end of a lengthy book. A good, firm edit with the deletion of the many scenes that didn’t push the story forward would tighten up this book significantly, making it in intriguing read rather than the slight grind it was. For this reason, and this reason alone, I wouldn’t pick up the sequel.

Alexandra Watson has always been a fast healer. Supernaturally fast. And now there are other changes happening that she doesn't understand. Someone knows who and what she is, but nobody is talking. Lexie knows time is running out and she needs answers fast, but
Maryanne, Lexie's mother, knows truth but refuses to tell. She has always been good at keeping secrets but secrets can be dangerous. The day is coming when she will have to tell all she knows. But will she break her silence too late?

Mantissa Creed kicks off her Cursed saga with a bang! The Ring takes creatures we are all familiar with and changes them just enough to make them original and not something we have seen a hundred times.
You can tell Creed put a lot of thought behind everything she wrote and took the time to make it her own. As soon as you start reading you know this is different, and you are immediately drawn into the world Creed has created.
Creed puts you right in the middle of everything. It is told from Alexandra's point of view which helps you can see it all clearly as you read. She really makes you feel like you are part of the story.
This was a great read. There were a few editing mishaps, but nothing major that distracts you from the story. Now comes the hard part-waiting for the next book!!

Has a slow start, I didn't really get into it until Z appears. Interesting concepts and characters, with the "white blood" and such. I am not so sure I like the multiple love interests, and romance relationships, it was really messy.

I thought it was quite obvious who is "Vangel". There were tons of clues, but I could be wrong.

I am having a hard time to believe S's love for A. I felt he wanted to believe he is in love with A, because he want what Z and M have, or what S think they have. S's behaviors upon A'd return was pretty annoying. He acted like a child that throwing a tantrum. *rolling my eyes*

This book is between YA and NA, since it gets but more action than YA but not much "action" than NA.

Oh and tons of things were pretty "abstract".

I have to admit this is the first book I have read since ten years and I’m glad I picked this one. This has put me back on my reading hobby. If you love books with undying dialogues that make you come back for more even when you’ve finished the book, this is one for you. The story reads more like a suspenseful, paranormal romance than sci-fi. The author has a unique writing style that I find really addictive and she did a brilliant job with the characters that I found myself falling in and out of love with one or the other every time a new ‘hot’ vampire was introduced. Out of possible options for Alexandra, I’m hoping she will pick Zachary. Can’t wait to read the next book!

Love triangle? No, that's not quite right. Love square? Yep. Three smokin' hot white blooded vampires, and one very emotionally confused hybrid.

Whomever will she choose? I'm rooting for Zachary.

Looking forward to reading book 2.

I actually DNF'd this book at 3 percent. I know, I know. It's super early to DNF a book but it was so over the top right out of the gate. And it hinted too much with no proper background. I just knew I wouldn't be reading the rest.
