Silent Screams

Rate this book
Aricia Sterling needs to belong and feel accepted for the artist she is, but her corporate-minded parents consider her career choice ridiculous. Her best friend, Layla Nardini, wants privacy and the chance to date. The two friends and three other manga book readers, including two boys who join more out of interest in the girls than books, form the Manga Book Club. When the club members express their individuality by wearing costumes to school, they set in motion events that escalate from a reprimand in the principal's office to the abduction of Layla by a human trafficker at a carnival. The friends form a strong bond as they race to save Layla. Can Aricia, Dallas, and Tatsumi find Layla before her captor sells her? Will the club members' first taste of romance lead to prom dates and acceptance by their classmates?

Author Melody Dimick spent more than thirty years as a full-time teacher and sometimes-confidante of teenagers, and SILENT SCREAMS shows just how well she knows teens.  Aricia, Layla, and Dallas (also called Squirrel), together with Caleb, Tatsumi, and Jacob just don't fit in with the high school crowd. Some of them have serious problems at home, too.   When they form the Manga Club, though, and offer each other friendship and support, life changes.  But first they have to rescue Layla, who was kidnapped by a human trafficker.  This book will keep you turning the pages to see how things turn out for this quirky, but very likable group of teens who show the power of friendship. I highly recommend this book.
