Shan Sa is a French author born in Beijing in 1972. The Girl Who Played Go was the first of her novels to be published outside of France. It won the Goncourt des Lycéens Prize in 2001 and earned critical acclaim worldwide. Her second novel to appear in English translation is "The Empress" (2006).
Shan Sa was born on October 26, 1972 in Beijing to a scholarly family . Her real name is Yan Ni Ni, then she adopted the pseudonym Shan Sa, taken from a poem of Bai Juyi.
Got this book as a birthday gift from my sister (thanx sis <3 ). So, about this book: -the good points were that the stories took place in different periods and that gave the opportunity to the reader to travel through time and experience the big events and periods that marked China so far. You have the emperial period, the slight modern period, the period when all the political changes took place and the contemporary period, though that one was a bit short. The POVs changed from story to story, as the characters changed as well, but the author managed to addapt to each characters gender and personality perfectly. In addition, her writing was really good, almost poetic but without being too tiring or difficult to understand. The stories were fast paced and easy to read. -the "bad" parts of this book were the theme. I don't know if it's me, but at least for me, the stories weren't that romantic. I mean, the romance wasn't as strong as it should be so we could easily understand that there were two souls that through time met each other again and again. The most romantic story was the first, though it never had a proper conclusion. In the second, the two characters were brother and sister, in the third they were friends (maybe something more but they never were able to express it) and in the final one there was a dream, but not a love story. Also, the stories ended a little roughly for me, as they didn't give a good conclusion. So, I didn't get the main idea of the book, but I enjoyed the stories and the writing, so 3 out of 5 for this book.
This was very lovely, though I do find it harder to read French fiction than non-fiction and I fear I missed some of the story reading this. But it was the story of reincarnation across four lives. The first set in Ming China, the 2nd in Qing, the 3rd during the cultural revolution and the last (and by far the shortest) in modern day China and Hong Kong. It was an interesting way to portray continuity over such different historical periods.
J'ai un peu la sensation d'être passée à côté de cette lecture ... Le récit se découpe en quatre volets différents - d'où le titre "Les quatre vies du saule" - avec des intrigues et des personnages différents. À chaque chapitre, le thème central est le même : l'amour. Mais gare aux friands de "romances", cet amour est parfois subtil ou encore fraternel ; dépeint dans un tel lyrisme qu'il en devient presque insaisissable ... Le deuxième "volet" du récit m'a un peu ennuyée et donc la suite de ma lecture a été plus laborieuse.
O primeiro livro que li da Shan Sa foi "A jogadora de Go". Comprei "As quatro vidas do salgueiro" porque tinha gostado daquele e porque a capa e o texto da badana me fizeram ficar com grandes expectativas. Depois comecei a lê-lo por diversas vezes e nunca me senti completamente cativada, acabei sempre por interromper a leitura e pegar noutros livros que entretanto me chegavam às mãos. Desta vez insisti e li até ao fim. Valeu a pena ler, a ideia da história é interessante, e até alguns ambientes e pormenores históricos. São quatro histórias que se passam em quatro cenários diferentes da História da China: a primeira durante a dinastia Ming, a segunda na China feudal do fim do séc. XIX/início do séc. XX, a terceira em plena Revolução cultural de Mao Zedong e a quarta na actualidade. As histórias estão ligadas pela reencarnação, simbolizada pelos ramos de salgueiro; no fundo os protagonistas das quatro histórias são os mesmo mas... em corpos, épocas e destinos diferentes. Devo confessar que não me senti presa à narrativa de forma contínua, dei por mim várias vezes a esforçar-me por realmente interiorizar e visualizar o que estava a ler (gostava de saber se estará relacionado com a tradução), mas acabei por gostar bastante desta fábula sobre a eternidade do amor.
Uma breve viagem pela história da China em quatro momentos diferentes: começa em 1440, na época de imperadores e mandarins; passa pela revolução cultural e culmina em uma época contemporânea.
Cada uma das histórias reflete um pouco da cultura de seu tempo, e as quatro histórias baseiam-se na crença de que "nossa existência é apenas uma curta passagem e temos muitas vidas para viver".
Ao longo dos séculos, dois personagens encontram-se em quatro vidas diferentes, unidos por um forte e sutil laço.
Aqui, a frase do poeta Vinícius "a vida é a arte do encontro, embora haja tanto desencontro pela vida" aplica-se bem, e, diferente dos contos de fada, confronta-nos com realidades concretas. Mostra que nem sempre a vida é um mar de rosas.
"Em cada existência também morremos várias vezes. Para crescermos temos que aceitar que os deuses nos esfolem".
De forma poética, faz-nos refletir sobre as decisões que tomamos, caminhos que seguimos, situações que nos são impostas ao longo da vida e o que podemos fazer com elas.
Quatre belles petites histoires, belles et tristes, que j'ai trouvées délicatement écrites, et qui nous font voyager à travers l'histoire de la Chine. Le principe de cette évolution dans le temps n'est peut-être pas très original, mais j'y ai complètement adhéré. En quelques lignes, on s'attache aux personnages, à l'intrigue. Et puis la narration n'est pas la même, suivant l'histoire, le narrateur est extérieur ou est un des personnages principaux, ça donne plus de vivacité à la succession des histoires. Une belle découverte, donc, et on me dit que La Joueuse de go de la même auteure est encore mieux? youpi il m'attend dans mes livres à lire! :)
Para um livro que prometia ser um interessante, se bem que ligeiro, take romântico da mitologia chinesa, foi das piores coisas que li este ano. Lamechas até ao doloroso, personagens nada interessantes, mitologia de grilo, uma falta de subtileza tremenda (só faltava o livro vir acompanhado de um anãozinho que apontasse e gritasse "ESTÃO A VER? TAL COMO NA REENCARNAÇÃO ANTERIOR!!! OMG!!!" cada vez que se chegasse à página apropriada), e, como se isso não bastasse, a tradução era tão boa que sempre que alguém costurava, "cozia". Sempre. Várias vezes ao longo do livro. Livros maus existem, e este é só mais um.

I think it is more than a mere love-story, it is a portrayal of China, its culture and History. The four stories – connected with each other, there are many references – are quite entertaining, especially because of what you learn about Chinese History (at least for my behalf, my History course didn't say a word about this country). But it is also beautifully written, it is almost like poetry.
This book tore my heart out time and time again, so I didn't think it could possibly hurt me more. It did. Chinese history is cruel, hard, and full of lies, but none more so than during and at the end of World War Two. The Japanese were every bit as ruthless as the Nazis. When everyone went home and thought it was finally over, a bloody revolution ripped across the country. Les quatre vies du saule pushes aside what history has glossed over and forgotten, showing me what it felt like to be caught in the crossfire between China and the world.

Η Σαν Σα δε γράφει απλή λογοτεχνία. Γράφει ποίηση ενώ διηγείται την ιστορία που θέλει να πει, οπότε όσοι αναμένουν να διαβάσουν κάτι γρήγορο και περιπετειώδες, τότε σίγουρα θ’ απογοητευτούν. Οι περιγραφές της είναι λεπτομερείς, θέλουν τον χρόνο τους, απαιτούν σκέψη και συγκέντρωση από τον εκάστοτε αναγνώστη. Συχνά μια απλή φράση δεν περιγράφει απλά την εξέλιξη της διήγησης, μα μας καλεί να καταλάβουμε τι στην ευχή μπορεί να σημαίνει για το πριν, το μετά και φυσικά το τώρα της ιστορίας μας. Κάποιες σκέψεις των ηρώων αγγίζουν τα επίπεδα της φιλοσοφικής θεώρησης της ζωής. Πάνω απ’ όλα όμως πρέπει να θυμόμαστε το μεγάλο δώρο που κάνει η Σαν Σα σ’ όσους τη διαβάζουν: Περιγράφει μοναδικά την πορεία της Κίνας, την ιστορία του λαού της, τη βία και τα δεινά που μάστιζαν πάντα αυτή την πολυπληθή χώρα, η οποία πάντα κατάφερνε μ’ έναν τρόπο να δείχνει σ’ όσους την κοιτούσαν από μακριά ωραίους τρόπους για να ζουν και να σκέφτονται τις ζωές τους, όμως η ίδια συχνά έχανε τον προσανατολισμό και το ένστικτο της. Σας θυμίζουν κάτι όλα αυτά; Ίσως μια άλλη χώρα που δείχνει για χρόνια να έχει μια παρόμοια μοίρα; Μήπως οι Κινέζοι βλέπουν την ιστορία της Ελλάδας όπως βλέπουμε κι εμείς αυτή της Κίνας;
J'aime Shan Sa. J'ai lu ''La joueuse de go'' et ''Les conspirateurs'' avant la lecture de ce livre. Ce livre m'a beaucoup plu. Les quatre nouvelles sont très différentes l'une de l'autre. Je préfère la première et la dernière parce qu'elles ont un élément surnaturel et j'aime leurs personnages beaucoup. Une raison de plus de lire ce roman, c'est pour apprendre un peu sur l'histoire de la Chine (à l'école, on n'a appris que quelques faits historiques sur ce pays magnifique). En outre, l'auteure souvent parle de la Révolution culturelle dans ses livres, et c'est précisément ce roman qui m'a donne de précieux renseignements sur cette période historique de la Chine, il m'a aidé à comprendre pourquoi l'auteure aime décrire cette période historique et ''tragique'' de son pays (j'ai pensé que la Chine sous le règne de président Mao était vraiment une période d'or pour son peuple; mais, évidemment ce n'est pas le cas). Bref, c'est un roman qui mérite d'être lu!
J'ai beaucoup aimé que l'auteure ce serve de l'idée de réincarnation pour raconter diverse époque de l'histoire de la Chine. J'ai beaucoup aimé la description de la révolution par des personnages jeunes et idéalistes. J'ai eu du mal à embarqué dans l'histoire durant le premier tiers du livre mais une fois ce point passé j'ai beaucoup aimé ma lecture. L'histoire d'amour supposément centrale était assez fade et les deux personnages principaux avaient peu de personnalité mais je crois que c'était un choix conscient de la part de l'auteur et que le vrai personnage principal de cette histoire c'est la Chine et son histoire.
Un livre agréable, un peu poétique. J'ai beaucoup aimé le fait que les quatres courtes histoires racontées se déroulent à différentes périodes, c'était vraiment un livre sympathique !
J'ai bien aimé les quatre récits, un peu comme quatre nouvelles qui dépeignent la chine à différentes époques. L'écriture y est délicate et ça se lit en un tour de main.
