This pictorial fosters the spirit of exploration and travel. It's about appreciation and seeking out adventure in all travel experiences, whether in the remote regions of Russia or the chaotic streets of Shanghai--it's a state of mind as much as a destination. This book is a reminder to even the most seasoned adventurers; there's a lifetime of discoveries yet to uncover.
The book featured gorgeous pictures and some suitably obscure locations (and a few puzzlers like Las Vegas and the moon!). However, after a while, the page-and-a-half per location format got tiresome and lent itself to a repetitious narratival arch. Also, the authors were a bit smug about their deep love of being truly in the midst of wilderness. But then again, so am I!
I love the title of this book. I often feel the strong urge to be in the middle of nowhere. I feel this because the connection to nature and self is so intense in these non- touristy real places, and I long for that during those long days in front of a dismal computer screen.
The adventures in this book that fascinate me the most are:
paria canyon p. 42
yellowstone p. 46
montana p. 50
machu picchu p 82 (This is becoming a touristy place now that it is only a day triop from Cuzco, but the author of this destination managed stumble upon a way to experiance it all by himself at night!)
Most travel books have either bad pictures and good narrative or good pictures and bad narrative. This is a book that is good at both and the lay-out design is well done. Fascinating yet human perspectives on places far away and right among us. The secret treasure is the index of travel information which helps you find your way to the very same places you're reading about. Excellent for the wanderer at heart :-) like me.
This is a truly fascinating book. The pictures are gorgeous and the places are interesting. A few of the contributors apparently liked to hear themselves talk, but most were fascinating. For someone who doesn't travel, this book is as close as I get!
This book is basically a series of short essays and stunning photos about people who traveled well off the beaten path. From the Tonga islands to the Mulanje Massif in Malawi to Babushkina, Russia, the travelers dare to go to places that really are situated in the middle of nowhere.
