In the Heart of the Amazon

Rate this book
By turns fascinating, funny, and horrifying, this is Nick Gordon’s account of more than 10 years spent in the Amazonian forests as a wildlife filmmaker, snorting ground-up seeds with the local shaman, building an artificial tarantula habitat to film the furry monsters mating, and killing and eating a two-foot snake.

I always thought nature is such a fascinating world, Africa and the Amazon are two of those which are close to my heart. Most of us, would never have the chance to step into the Amazon jungle. With Nick Gordon's book, I felt like I've been there, I've talked to the natives, I've seen the tarantulas, I've been through the dangerous encounters on the river, I've experienced the hardship of getting everything in order in the city before heading out filming in the jungle.

I really love this book. It's an eye opener. I was shocked and sad to know that Nick Gordon has passed away years ago. It's such a pity. May he rest in peace.

If you've ever sat and enjoyed wildlife television and like to read, then I'm sure this book will be of interest. It documents the dedication, hard work and risk put into these stunning shows, by the people behind the camera/scenes. I envied and admired Nick Gordon immensely after reading this; the job he does is extremely difficult and certainly not for everyone, but it must also be very satisfying. A way of life more than a career. My only minor criticism is it is quite relentless in a journal kind of style - I had a break half way through and returned to it after a couple of weeks.
