Marianne Lockwood, daughter of one of the most powerful lords in the north of Georgian England is shunned and reviled in her village as a madwoman and a witch, for she can see and communicate with spirits.
Tormented by her abusive father and abandoned by the man she loves, Marianne flees to London where she weds the wealthy Lord Maskery. She soon discovers that her husband has secrets of his own. After Lord Maskery’s death she returns to Lockwood Hall, her childhood home. Her now-deceased father is still in residence at the hall, his twisted, deformed spirit more malevolent than he ever was in life.
Her father is not the only shade from her past for she encounters her lost childhood love, who has grown into a very dangerous man. Marianne is plunged into a nightmare web of old enemies, apparitions and the criminal underworld from which only her unique ability can save her.

When I'm not writing - which isn't very often - I enjoy reading Daphne Du Maurier, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, MR James and the Brontes, among many others. I also enjoy swimming, walking and spending time with my family.

A good story
This is the first book of Heather Atkinson's that I have read and I really liked the story and the characters. I felt the book was rushed in places and a few inconsistencies, but overall, very cleverly done and an enjoyable read.

Oh I absolutely loved this book! Best one I’ve read in a long time! Third I’ve read by this author now and quickly becoming a favourite :)
