Anders de la Motte, a former police officer, made his debut in 2010 with the award-winning thriller Game and has since then been one of Sweden’s most beloved and popular crime writers. He is the author of several acclaimed and bestselling crime fiction series, among them the suspenseful Skåne Quartet. Published in 2022, The Mountain King is the first bestselling installment in his new Leo Asker series.
I read the first two books in the trilogy and will be getting the third, for sure! I was uncertain what to expect, as I haven't read Motte before, but I was pulled in at the start.
HP is a slacker who some might relate to, and not my first choice in story hero, but the intrigue of the game pulled me right in. From the moment HP finds an odd cell phone on the train, we're yanked into an adventure we can't put down.
The writing is a bit odd in places, but the need for the adrenaline rush of HP's next task made it easy to overlook any strange phrasing. An intriguing read!

About Game: WHAT!? I am totally dumbfounded! I had so many questions, most have been answered and then the end! THE ENDING! Oh my god… Just wow.
The entire book was so fast paced I nearly didn’t even notice that I had just read 400 pages in one day. I didn’t want to stop. There was always something going on and even when I was cringing because HP can be a dumb ass, I was still sitting at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next.
And there are some serious WHAT moments in this. The way things are set up I was totally flabbergasted when certain parts of the story started showing their colors. I had even more questions as I got to know the characters surrounding HP.
The only downside was about 70% in. Once I started to see where things were heading it got a little long. Not long enough to actually put down but just a little wordy as the backgrounds of the main characters start coming out. Again, not enough to make me stop reading and I actually wound up enjoying those portions but the climax was weird for me. Really enjoyed the ending however!
This is one wild ride and I can’t wait to read book two to see what happens next! I am really hoping the questions that come up in the final chapter are answered! They really made me do a double back and reread! So glad I was able to get all three but if you’re not they are all being published soon!
This is part of a trilogy, I've just started 'Buzz' the 2nd book. I really liked the 1st book 'The Game'. Great story, interesting and kept me hooked. So many questions!
The Game definitely reels you in. HP's character irritated the hell out of me but by the end I started to like him. Different story, really enjoying it so far.
The action continues in Buzz as the forces affecting HP and his sister, Rachel, reach out internationally to keep the tension level high. With the evil forces of the game in the background, fate seems to turn against Rachel as she fights to do her job safeguarding government officials and HP is set up as an apparent murderer in the Emirate of Dubai. Technology is at the forefront again as too many people are not what they seem, and a large tech company works a dark magic through the web. The action flows fast and furious as parallel story lines proceed in alternating paragraphs. It is an unusual and very effective technique to engross the reader and heighten the level of tension. I was exhausted when I finished the book, but eager for more.
One of my favorite books. At first I did not know that there is a second part, the first book is Amazing! The whole trilogy is just GREAT !
The last one Bubble,is so full of action and so many plots.I thought the first book will be for sure the best...but in the last one...u just' cant stop reading.I like also the way Anders write. HP was in the last book maybe too much like a "Jason Bourne" - he could die in dozens of situations. but all in all a very good Thriller for me.
Good plotting and new concepts. Great Millennium Trilogy easter eggs! British grammar from the translator bugged me a bit ("fitted" instead of "fit"), but it's not incorrect. A little of the writing felt a bit juvenile, but overall a very interesting series.
This one is pretty good with a dynamite (no pun intended) ending.
You have to suspend belief as to what I will call 'Omniscience' by some individual(s), but just enjoy the intrigue.
Also it's not quite great at character development, but I did like the woman bodyguard protagonist regardless.
Lastly, I knew ahead of time that this is only Book #1 of a trilogy, but there is at least a very nice tidying up at the end of this first book to get the reader a feeling of satisfaction. And at the same time an urge to read Books #2 and 3 too!
liked the idea, but not the execution. Strongly feel this was probably once a movie script and when it didn't sell, was turned into a book with minor adjustements. It is very descriptive, there is no pace in the tons of action this book has, and it leaves no room for imagination since every tiny detail is written down. Could have been a 100 page book in stead of 300 and a real page turner. So .. though I am slightly curious to know how the story continuous, I stopped reading part two after diagonally reading the first 20 pages because again the long descriptions were getting on my nerves ...
This is an easy read. However, it is one of the worst books that I have read. It will keep you turning the pages, but I think that the author was driven by series of poor American action movies and most of the time I was actually amused by the stupidity that the last book Bubble is constantly offering. Luckily, I found the Bubble at the airport library and most certainly I won't be reading the first two books. Shortly, it is naive and stupid.
Surprisingly addictive, strangely written story that parallels reality enough to make you wonder. Great read - my only beef was the habit the author has of blatantly switching perspectives between the two protagonists without warning
Game is about a man in his 30's whose name is Henrik Pettersson. one day he finds a phone on a train which asks him if he wanted to play a game. At first he didn't want to but decided to do it to see what happens. When he completed his first task he was excited about the rewards he got. As time went by the game started getting too serious and messed up Pettersson's normal life. His sister, Rebecca, who joined a special police force was one the victims of the game including their friend Mange.Henrik does everything he can to stop the game. The game takes place in Los Angeles.
I give this book 5 stars because it kept me entertained the whole I was reading it. The missions Henrik was given never gave disappointment. Also the variety of characters that were brought into it gave it an extra boost to the mood of the story. The main characters background also made me have sympathy for him even though he's not real. His cool sister who apparently is not someone you should mess with also intrigued me with her various cop like moments.
Someone who is a fan of comedy and action type books will love this book. Also people who love surprises in their books would have a fun time reading this book. When I first looked at the book I thought it was just about someone playing a video game, but I was very mistaken.
So far I have read Game and Buzz. I was quite intrigued with the premise of Game, and enjoyed reading it, though the author's over use of exclamation marks got to me sometimes. But overall, this is a taut, fascinating thriller set in Stockholm, yet without a lot of the darkness that seems to be characteristic of the books that I've read (or read about) set there.
There's a lot of humor in both books, with a sort of sad sack hero who keeps getting banged up yet manages to keep on outwitting his enemies. The author jumps around from one point of view to another but I never felt lost, and there are a lot of clever connections between the chapters
Buzz was fascinating because it seemed to take the premise of the first book and expand it in a way I hadn't expected. The beginning seems a bit too coincidental, but I have a feeling that will all be explained in the third book, which promises to be even more intriguing.
Anders de la Motte has created quite a world and peopled it with really entertaining characters and situations. The trilogy is so worth reading, I highly recommend you stick with it, even if the first few chapters are a bit confusing due to changes in point of view. Once you catch on to the writer's voice and style, you will be caught up in this fast paced thriller. I read on edge, constantly second guessing and enjoying the twists and turns. Well written and plotted with multi dimensional characters, I found the series exciting and riveting. *I received my copies from the publisher in exchange for honest reviews.
i'm not completely finished with this yet, but from what i've read, it's quite good plot-wise, but with a few kinks in the writing style. being bilingual/half swedish, i understand the way some parts can get literally lost in translation, which makes for some funny bits here and there, especially with the swearing. also i found that the slightly erratic switches between narrators could get a bit confusing but you do get the gist of it after a while. overall, the plot was quite captivating, and i feel like the idea was pretty original, with all the supernatural and dystopian themed novels coming out lately, it's a refreshing read, and i'd recommend it
Just read the first book in this trilogy. It took me quite a few pages to really get into it, but when I did it was hard to stop. I was surprised to like it so much, because it's a story completely filled with cliches. Hero who is troubled. Heroine with a dark past. Conspiracies. Crazy people... I like my books with a little more originality, but this book is so well written that I can't wait to read the other two parts. Well done mister writer!
I've only read the first book, Game, from the trilogy. I'll probably pick up the second one as it was interesting but not as thrilling or suspenseful as I had hoped. In many ways, it reminded me of the 1997 Michael Douglas movie, The Game, which is possibly why I didn't find it completely original or engaging considering that was 14 years ago.
I loved these books, the plot is really moving and I loved the relationship between HP and Becca and how they always try to be there for each other. It's quite fast paced and there are some really big things going on about in these books. I especially loved the plot twist in the third book - Bubble
Tells a great story, very creative and keeps you entertained all the way through. I was confused in the beginning with the switching of the characters POV, but it actually works. Overall a great book and a good read.
Certainly not the nicest main character, but certainly a brilliant trilogy. The main plot of controlling data is very relevant in today's internet world and to me as a highly computer literate reader definitely a distinct possibility of it is not already happening.
Actually, I only finished the first book, Game. I still have the others to read. Game, for some reason, wasn't listed as a separate book on Goodreads. This book was strange. Nice twisty ending, though.
I have only finished the first book, Game. I am unsure when I will read the other 2. Game, wasn't listed as a separate book on Goodreads for some reason. This book was strange. Had a good twist at the end but wasn't my style of book & took me a few weeks to get through it.
I think this book is really interesting because it includes a lot of features in it to make it really interesting. During the book, there were a lot of swear words. But overall, I think it is really good to read
I actually gave up. I didn't like characters and the story line just wasn't holding my attention. It is very 'now' in style but I think it is a case of style over substance.
