Don’t you just cherish little books? I do! Those small ones which fit in a purse or pocket, the size of a cell phone to be pulled out at any time? They are infinitely preferable to their comparably-sized gadgets. (I can get away with saying that here on GRs, if nowhere else.)
A good friend gave me this mini gem for my recent birthday. She knows I love the Blessed Mother and books. I’m not sure if she knows my special fondness for the tiny versions.
The Pocket Book of Mary has one of those squashy soft covers, gilt edges and a gold ribbon. But its real treasures are the reproductions of nineteenth to twentieth century French holy cards from a private collection facing each page of text. Most are directly applicable. A few are general in nature. English translations are provided.
Marian history, art, legends, apparitions, music, customs, prayers, practices, and various beliefs from around the world beginning with her birth until the present are told in brief. In some cases the brevity led to an occasional ‘blurring’ of accuracy, or anyway it seemed so to me, but then I am a stickler for details. Not often, and anyway you don’t read a book like this for facts but for pleasure. That minor complaint aside, it is a lovely book! It makes a perfect gift for your favorite Mary-person.
Can be read in a single sitting. I took longer to admire the exquisite images!
