Kate Johnson has been in hiding, living quietly in the country with elderly and blind “Smokey Joe” Bernard (as sort of a caretaker for him) for the past six months after being on the run for the past two years. Kate was once an investigative reporter and she is the only survivor of the Broadcaster Butcher (who brutally stabbed her twenty-four times and left her to die in her home.) The Broadcaster Butcher has been targeting/murdering female news broadcasters. Agent Hayden Reed (who is part of a small team of FBI specialists called the Apostles, a Special Criminal Investigative Unit) has been searching for Kate. Since she is the only one who survived the Broadcaster Butcher Hayden needs to talk to Kate and get her to help him catch this crazy serial killer. Hayden finally tracks her down at Smokey’s cabin and with her help they try to lure the Butcher out.

This was a captivating and fast-paced read. I liked Kate. She went through a lot of rough times in her life. She had a terrible upbringing with an unbalanced mother and brother. Kate’s father abandoned her… But Kate did have strength, and she was a fighter. I also liked Hayden. He was strong, kind, and committed to his job. I found the secondary characters interesting, especially old Smokey Joe and the outspoken sergeant (Lottie) working on the case, she made me laugh at times. The villain was strange and creepy.

Another entertaining read from Shelley Coriell’s “Apostles” series!

Frankly, I feel like an idiot.

Here I was, racking my brain, following the clues, putting so much effort, trying to figure out the killer and all the while the killer was

I still don't understand what his problem was. Why again did he become a serial killer?

Still, I liked this story a lot. Not sure why. Because of the hero maybe? He was AMAZING.

The heroine wasn't bad either, though some of her idiotic choices towards the end were priceless.

And let's not forget awesome secondary characters...

She’d discovered each attack mirrored hers except for one thing: She survived.

If you followed along with my updates, you'd know I was really enjoying this from the beginning. Kate who survived an attack by her brother goes on the run only to be found by Hayden, a FBI agent who is hunting the Broadcast Butcher serial killer. The first half has everyone thinking the Butcher is Kate's brother but there were secondary characters who had me side-eyeing them. The second half switched gears and has the Butcher's identity a secret again and the hunt continues.

The first half is more focused on the mystery/suspense plot about the serial killer, we get povs from the killer that help bring a chill to the tone (in one scene, the killer uses their latest victims blood as lube to masturbate with). There's also povs from a police sergeant helping to search for the killer and a colleague rival of Kate's, along with Kate and Hayden's povs. I thought the secondary characters were great red-herrings in the beginning and helped ramp up the mystery and suspense but the second half and ending kept some going too long and then one in particular ended up feeling a tad ridiculous.

She’d just shaken the unshakable Hayden Reed, and if she wasn’t so damned furious at him, she’d laugh.

The romance does take more of a back seat, which I thought fit the overall structure of the story but the second half does have Hayden and Kate feeling more for each other, the bedroom scene was pretty much fade to black though. This was more of a book of friendships, Kate's friendship while being a caregiver to Smokey Joe and the Apostles, what the group of FBI agents Hayden works with are called for their talent with getting the job done in unusual ways. We get a couple glimpses of other Apostle agents and I definitely want to read their stories.

This had a strong beginning but the end really overworked itself with dragging out redherrings and creating a very convoluted villain, it's probably not a good sign when your serial killer is finally identified and my first thought was "Who?" as it took me a couple seconds to remember who they were. I'm still going to search out other books in the series because the mystery was pretty intriguing there for a while.

A true suspenseful novel, that will keep you guessing who the serial killer really is, all through the book. I kept thinking I had figured out who the killer was but then a twist would happen and I would have to go back to trying to discover who the killer was and why was he after female broadcast journalists.

There was plenty of suspense, mystery, and danger. This could have become a gruesome book but most of the murders being committed were done off screen and talked about after the fact. The journey to finding the serial killer was filled with many enjoyable characters that made the book come alive with their antics. I think Smokey made the book.

Agent Hayden Reed spends his life chasing vicious criminals that cause pain and destruction to the community. He pretty much spends most of his waking hours working on solving crimes that seem impossible to solve. The case of the broadcast butcher comes across his desk and he is not able to let it go. The only survivor from the case is missing and he is determined to find her. He is just as determined to earn her trust, to help with solving this case and catch the monster once and for all.

Kate is on the run and has been living her life in hiding, since the day she survived a vicious attack, that was meant to leave her dead. She does not trust easy but, is just as Hayden ready to catch the broadcast butcher and put an end to her nightmare. There are lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing to the very end.

This book was heavy on the suspense, thriller and light on the romance angle but overall a good romantic suspense novel that will keep you guessing who the broadcast butcher is.

Received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

If you like your romantic suspense books with a heavy focus on the whodunnit plot and a slow-burn romance between an FBI Agent and a headstrong former-journalist who survived an attempt to kill her by a serial killer, then this is the book for you!

Hayden/Kate is perfection and I fell in love with all the secondary characters too .... Smokey Joe, Hatch, Mae ....

Personally, this was one of the best romantic suspense books that I've read in a long time and I'm already jumping up and down for the second one in the series.

"It's pure logic, Hayden. Without a soul of your own, you couldn't combat the evil souls of this world and win."

Ms. Coriell has a new fan! I came across her Apostles series by chance and I'm so happy I did.
I just finished THE BROKEN after reading it in one sitting. The writing is fantastic, the suspense kept my heart rate up and I shed a few tears.

I loved how the story and the relationship between Kate and Hayden progressed. It was a slow burn and believable. You felt the attraction but also could see they didn't want to act on their feelings. The story focused more on the crimes than the romance and for me that was refreshing. You still get some hearts and flowers though. It was the perfect combination.

I'm a huge crime show fan (The First 48, Forensic Files) so it was like watching a tv drama play out before you on the pages. You could tell the author did her homework about crime scenes and cop etiquette which just added so much more to this book. The suspense like I mentioned was fantastic. I kept changing my opinion who the villain was and by the reveal I was still wrong! I can't wait to read more in this series, and I'll be starting Hatch's story soon. 4.5 Stars!

Reread 10/30/24

I'm sad to say I forgot about this book until looking through my read book recently but after my reread and loving it again, I definitely plan to finally read the other two in this series. It's a great blend of romance and suspense.

I've killed no one. I've ordered no one to be killed. These children who come to you with their knives, they're your children. I didn't teach them, you did.– Charles Manson

Meet No Sympathy. He’s cold, blunt, uncaring, unfeeling. You aren’t going to like him. A man without a conscience, he appears to be totally emotionless. He’s the person for whom most of our explicit swear words were coined - Ruth Minshull

In The Silence of the Lambs, Thomas Harris describes it concisely. He lives down in a ribcage in the dry leaves of a heart. For within the serial killer, there is no true heart. Or is it that there is no “soul” – that part of us that discerns right from wrong, love from hate, compassion from brutality? What causes a person to become a serial killer, really?

While my work at UC during my Masters training balanced the ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’ controversy, Coriell has done brilliant job writing about the ‘nurture’ philosophy of psychopathy and serial killers. Her research is beautifully done, concise, and realistic as is her character development. The Broken draws you in and leaves you breathless, turning page after page, engrossed in the story, drawing you along into a world of pain and brutality – and yet doing so with such a deft hand that, rather than being stomach churning, it is instead deeply affecting, reaching into your heart and soul and raising questions which will stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Referencing one of my favorite short articles on child abuse and psychopathy, Lylah M. Alphonse1, states: The groundbreaking HBO documentary "Child of Rage" years ago showed how horrific abuse and neglect could leave a child unable to bond with other people, turning them into children "without conscience, who can hurt or even kill without remorse." In other words: the child becomes a psychopath. Extreme physical and sexual abuse and neglect can certainly cause the detached, calculating demeanor and lack of a sense of conscience shared by the serial killer. For the layman, this is one of the easiest articles on the syndrome to read and understand, and it points out quite elegantly how simple it is to take that small step to becoming a monster. And yet, the conversion of a brutalized child to a serial killer isn’t a given, and in Shelly Coriell’s brilliant The Broken, the brutality suffered by three very different children results in three very different outcomes. Outcomes that are horrifying, sad, and deeply, deeply disturbing.

Katrina Erikson had a rough start. Abandoned by her father, she and her younger brother, Jason are raised by a mentally ill mother. Jason is the child whom the mother obsessively dotes upon while alternately neglecting and torturing Katrina. Jason, who slept in his mother’s bed for much too long, and to unknown consequence, while Katrina is locked away in the attic, to be neither heard nor seen.

At a young age Katrina runs away from home, working herself to exhaustion, attending college, then becoming a well-known broadcast journalist. Her life is running smoothly, she is even able to set aside for long periods the memories of her youth. Until, that is, she is attacked, stabbed twenty-four times, and left for dead on her bedroom floor. And the thing is – she knows who did it. She knows – and yet no one will believe her.

When we first meet Katrina, she is “Kate” a loner who has traveled the back roads on her motorcycle for the last three years, rarely speaking to anyone, running from the butcher who searches for her in order to finish what he has begun. But there is someone else looking for her too . . .

Hayden Reed is looking for Katrina – because Hayden Reed believes. And he believes for a horrific reason. You see, Hayden Reed is an FBI agent – an FBI agent who is on the trail of the Broadcast Butcher, a serial killer who slaughters beautiful broadcast journalists by stabbing them many, many times. And Hayden knows that Katrina was his first victim. He knows, even though the police didn’t believe her, didn’t believe she knew who attacked her, didn’t believe that the attacker would return. When Hayden finally tracks Kate down, he attempts to bring her in as a material witness, to drag her into witness protection – to force her to relive her own personal hell on earth.

One of my favorite scenes in the book is when Hayden first tells Kate he is “sorry” for what he is going to put her through. She responds, “You’re sorry? . . . For what? For the scars that disfigure my face and body? For the ineptitude of your law enforcement brothers? For believing in a system that doesn’t work?” When his only response is, “It works.” Her reply was a gut wrenching, and oh so true statement. “Like hell it does! It’s a broken system, a broken world, Agent Reed, shattered and ugly and full of evil.” It is so easy for a man like Hayden, a true believer in the perfection of the system of “justice” to overlook all of the failures of society and the legal system – and so easy for a broken Kate to have no belief in the system that failed her so brutally.

What happens in The Broken is a breathtaking race against time, as the body count rises and the Butcher gets closer and closer to his goal of finding Katrina. Finding her, and killing her – “the one who got away.” The writing is tight, leading you from one moment to the next, never giving away too much, never going overboard with the violence, which is mostly ‘off screen’ and yet holds your attention and drags you further into the story. You become a part of the darkness, of the heinous acts of a true “Butcher” – and of the huge disconnect between what one would wish justice to be – and what it truly is.

“Why didn’t you report the second attack?”

“What would the police say? ‘Ooops! Sorry we screwed up. We’ll do better next time’? I didn’t report the attack, Agent Reed, because it wouldn’t make a difference.”

This is a Very Highly Recommended Read for the lover of suspense, mystery, thrills and chills. I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review. And, honestly? It is going on my “Keepers” shelf!

Get out your notebooks, your pencils and your magnifying glass, we are out to solve the case of the Broadcast Butcher! Beautiful broadcasters are being butchered and mutilated, the case has never been solved and the only victim to survive has gone into hiding. Bring in an elite group of FBI agents known as The Apostles, who work outside of the box to catch their prey and the chase is on. the Broken by Shelley Coriell is a romantic mystery/thriller that threatens to give its reader whiplash with all of its twists and turns. If you’re like me, you like to feel smart, figuring out the villain before the characters do, but trust me, behind that last corner is a surprise that will shock you, completely!

FBI agent, Hayden Reed looks more like a GQ cover model than a fierce lawman out to solve a case that has defied the odds, but first, he must find the sole survivor of the Broadcast Butcher, a woman who does not want to be found. Katrina has reinvented herself, scarred and scared, she has forsaken life in front of the camera for caring for a blind veteran in a secluded area in Colorado. Now called Kate, she is strong, resourceful and determined to stay alive. How Hayden found her is part of his gift as an FBI agent. What he found was “explosive” to say the least! Not wanting any part of the investigation or prosecution IF the murderer is apprehended, Kate‘s attempts to flee from Hayden are foiled over and over by his uncanny ability to second guess her actions.

Throughout their cat and mouse game, they learn to respect each others strengths and a slow simmering romance is in the air. With the help of friends and family, these two are on the hunt, Kate always unwillingly at Hayden’s side. Will they find this killer before another woman falls victim to a brutal death?

Shelley Coriell has a hit on her hand! She keeps the lines of tension taut, each scene powerful with energy and hasn’t forgotten to lighten the mood by including some fabulous supporting characters that steal the show at times. With great dialogue, both mental and verbal, the biggest and most well-kept secret is who dunnit!

My search for another Laura Griffin-style author continues... There was nothing wrong per se with this, it's just that the mystery was kind of ridiculous (lots of red herrings, but ultimately the resolution was effectively random and revealed in an info-dump) and the characters' chemistry was rather uninteresting. It was nicely-paced and didn't lag, but the writing felt repetitive at times (lots of characters repeating the same phrasing over and over again). I wish the world was built a bit more as well--again my frame of reference for this genre is Laura Griffin, who's Tracers series has a complex world that's fully-realized. Since this is the first in a series, I would have thought there would be more context presented, since my assumption is that the rest of the series will be related to the team Hayden is part of.

Anyway, I am a harsh critic of the romance-suspense genre, so take what I have a to say with a grain or two of salt--my problem seems to be that I like one author in the genre, rather than actually digging the genre itself.

***This mini-review has also been posted on The Social Potato

Actual Rating 3.5

The Broken was a thoroughly entertaining read to say the least, and I probably would have rated it higher had the actual revelation behind the mystery not been a complete buzzkill.

Aside from the revelation, another issue I had was the multiple POVs, but in the end I got used to them since the two main characters did remain in the spotlight.

I think one of my favorite things about this book were the secondary characters. I had so much fun reading about them. There was a large variety amongst them and even the ones who didn’t play a huge role in the book as a whole were interesting to read about.

The main characters were well developed, and I really enjoyed being inside their heads. Kate has a messy past which has made her into a person who doesn’t trust easily, but she had found a place for herself in the world by working hard. Of course, being attacked changed that and she has been in hiding for the past couple of years. Her fear is palpable and she is such an easy character to get behind. You cannot help but cheer for her.

Hayden is an equally intriguing character who in spite of being somewhat of a cliché is characterized wonderfully. He is a hard worker and believes in justice and goes to great lengths to make it happen. This, of course, doesn’t leave much room for a personal life and of course, the kind of work he does has caused him to toughen up to the point where people have called him "soulless".

This, obviously, changes when he meets Kate, and I have to say, the romance between the two is satisfying. It is slow burn in a weird sense and while there is attraction from the get-go, it morphs into something more as the two spend more time in each other’s company. The reason I say weird sense is because this whole book takes place over the course of mere weeks so… one could claim that their romance is a case of "insta", but I never felt that way.

The mystery itself wasn't an issue but when things unravelled, I felt seriously let down. All the running around in circles and red herrings had been for nothing and I was just really disappointed.

Aside from that, even though the book is seemingly long, it is a rather quick read and the pages fly by. It’s entertaining and will definitely keep you on your toes trying to solve the mystery.

4.5 Stars for SHEER Twists and turns! WOW, this book had me guessing at every single turn. I seriously would think I had the killer pinned down and then WHAM! another twist or turn would come at you. I LOVED HAYDEN REED, watching Kate break down his walls and how the author described little changes that you could see that were throwing him off, for example- Mr. suit and tie misplaced his suit coat, etc. Just the small things that should you that even the most hard core investigators could break/crack under pressure.

Agent Hayden Reed is on the hunt for the Broadcast Butcher. There have been several murders and now the FBI has no where to go but to where it all started with the first and only victim who survived Katrina. Katrina is no more, she does not exist. She is Kate now, Kate is on the run and has been in hiding for 3 years. She is in Colorado helping a blind vet named Smokey with his household and selling jewelry to makes ends meet but Kate has become complicant and has not moved for 6 months now. So when Agent Reed shows at the door and Kate gives him a split lip and Smokey blows up the shed, its a sign to Kate to get away as fast as she can. Agent Reed can see she is going to run so, he decides to take Kate with him, but Kate will not leave without someone to protect Smokey. Agent Reed takes Smokey to stay with someone he knows and leaves him there while he takes Kate to a safe FBI place so she can be transferred to a safe house. While waiting for her transfer Kate feels like she is pinned in and escapes custody of her FBI handlers only to be grabbed by Hayden again. Hayden knows he can't let her out of her sight, so he includes her in his missions to solve the crime that she is so closely linked to.

There are so many twists and turns and I can not help but think this is one of the best mysteries out there as I was so surprised who the killer really was, early on you are given so much information that you think its a "slam dunk" only to be given so many other theories and suspects. It is a FANTASTIC story, with a hint of romance that brews with Agent Reed and Kate. While, not hugely hot and steamy it is nice to see their relationship grow and blossom. I can not wait to read more in this series because for book 1, its a FANTASTIC start.

Shelley CoriellThe Broken

This was my first romantic suspense that I have ever read, and I have to say I have come to appreciate this genre. I knew what was going on and I was sitting on the edge of my seat as I turned the pages! Definitely a must read from start to finish. But to consider what Kate Johnson had to undergo in this mind gripping suspense with being stabbed several times from a familiar source yet still finding time to fit in a love interest...Well, it is simply romantic! Not to mention the talented, handsome Agent Reed! After all, what goes better with crime, then a little spice of romance??

Also I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

Not really my cup of tea. I found the plot too complicated and unbelievable. The villain's motivation was really odd and there was just too much going on. Romance was okay but too rushed for me and I'd have liked more of it. I think it skews too much suspense for my taste and the suspense is pretty grisly and OTT IMO.

DNF. Plot seemed good and so did the characters. My problem with it was the writing. I was trying so hard to be absorbed the story but something was missing. One minute I was picturing the characters in place only to find out the writer moved them somewhere else. Just seemed like the details I need to really visualize what was happening was missing.

So, it’s been a while since I’ve read a good crime thriller. This had all the things that I think make one great. The plot was full of things to keep you guessing. It wasn’t predictable and the characters were well-developed. Plus, there’s a good romance built in, which makes almost any story better if you ask me.

The story revolves around Kate. I admired her strength through all she had endured. I really appreciated that she wasn’t another weak personality. I also enjoyed her friend Smokey Joe immensely. He may be old and blind, but boy was he a fighter!! Then there’s Agent Hayden Reed – Mr. Clean Cut. Yummy! I loved that he had the whole put together tough guy thing going and then the hard to get to soft guy. But, most of all I loved his protective nature.

The sexual tension between Kate and Hayden was often palpable, and I was definitely pulling for them the whole way through. I will have to admit that there were a few times that their actions seemed a little rushed towards each other. I know when you’re involved in some high intensity stuff, it’ll often lead to a rushed relationship, but it still felt just a little weird a few times for me. This wasn’t the overall feel of their relationship, though. Throughout the majority of the book I found myself laughing with them and cheering them on!

Let me not forget the bad guy. In truth, I have to say bad guys. I’m not giving anything away here, so don’t make ANY assumptions on what I just said or you’ll be confusing yourself! So, needless to say, the bad guys were just SICK. You’ll encounter some rather gruesome and downright disgusting things in this story. I would NOT recommend it for the faint of heart. I know for me one of the hardest things to read about in a book is rape, especially of a child. I’ll say here that this is talked about but not described, in case this is an issue for you. Nonetheless, expect to encounter some violent scenes, and of course there’s strong language, too.

As far as the plot goes, I only found it to drag a little bit about 20% in for a short bit. I know the foundation of the story was still being laid, and it wasn’t a big drag. This really says a lot for me. I often find crime thrillers to drag a LOT, but that wasn’t the case here. This book keeps you on your toes.

Overall, this is a story of hope. I liked that it had a strong underlying theme. I really enjoyed it and I definitely look forward to reading more of Shelley Coriell’s books!! I recommend this to all of you crime thriller lovers out there, especially if you’re one that likes a good romance mixed in. Just remember – not for the faint of heart! An easy 4 stars!

Overall, really a pretty good book. It was easy to connect with the characters. Loved both Smoky Joe and Lottie even though they weren’t the main characters. They added a lot of dimension and lightheartedness to the story.

I have to say that the biggest disappointment for me, and why I didn’t give it a higher rating, is because it seemed as if the ending, the actual solution to the entire story, was completely disjointed and didn’t at all fit. I’m all for twists and turns and unexpected outcomes, but I’m not a fan of things that seem to go off on completely random tangents. Even more so when we are talking a story that is like a puzzle that is working to get solved. It is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, having a dozen or so pieces left, and realize that those pieces actually go to a different puzzle all together.

This took a huge turn and when the bad guy is revealed, spewing it all in the end (a writing device that I’m really not a fan of and one of the bigger reasons why I quit reading any kind of mysteries for a while), none of the little bits and clues you followed throughout the story really even connected any dots to this guy. What connections were there, seemed forced and so hugely and ridiculously coincidental making what was up until that point a cleverly wrought story seem extremely contrived. It lost all its momentum and kind of died for me.

I also struggled with the fact that there were some pretty momentous events that never got explained. The biggie for me was how in the world Kate managed to get away and survive the second attack. She has a scar that is bad enough to have needed medical attention, but how she managed to get away and live through it was never addressed. The attack on Lottie also didn’t seem to work with the apparent mindset of this killer since he had the opportunity to actually kill her when she hit her head and ended up unconscious. It only would have taken a second or two to finish her off, but he didn’t. Apparently because of a waitress, but if there was any chance he’d be seen, he never would have taken the chance in the first place. It just didn’t fit. It is never explained why the last mirror never got smashed either. That was apparently a huge deal and a big clue at that crime scene, but it was never dealt with. At one point it is assumed the stalker was seen and it prevented the killer from finishing, but we later learn that when he saw the old lady he left, that he didn’t see the murder, so he didn’t interrupt it.

There were just enough of those kinds of oddities in the story to make it just okay good rather than really good. Attention to detail is huge in this kind of a story as far as I’m concerned. It loses a lot if you can’t pay attention to those kinds of things.

...a small group of FBI specialists known for working outside the box and, according to some, outside the law. Some media pundit nicknamed them the Apostles...

The Broken is the first book in author Shelley Coriell’s new series, The Apostles, and is a stand-alone novel. The Broken was a wonderfully written romantic suspense/thriller story told from several points of view, including the two main characters and the villain.

Kate, formerly known as Katrina, is a woman on the run. After almost losing her life after a brutal attack and being convinced that the authorities can’t or won’t protect her, Kate gives up everything, and hits the road. All she wants is anonymity and safety. She settles in a small town, working as a live in companion to an elderly veteran... until she's found.

Hayden is a brilliant FBI Agent, dedicated to finding and stopping the Broadcast Butcher, a serial killer that has targeted female broadcast journalists. Hayden believes the key to stopping the Butcher is to find the only surviving victim...which leads him to Kate.

There's a lot to like about The Broken! The writing was excellent and the story was well developed. I especially loved the character of Smokey Joe! Readers that enjoy a heavy dose of sex mixed with their suspense may be a little disappointed. While there was an instant connection between Hayden and Kate, which leads to an element of sexual tension throughout the book, the growing relationship and the suspense story line were the main features. I’m not saying there wasn’t any sex, but it wasn't front and center and it wasn't a focus of the book. Personally, I like a pretty high steam level even in my suspense books but I didn’t miss anything in The Broken. The quality of the writing and the overall story made up for any lack of sexy time, at least for me.

Overall, this was a great romantic suspense story, one of the best I've read lately. Well written, well developed, great chemistry between characters, this book had it all. I honestly didn't know who the bad guy was until the very end. I enjoyed everything about this book. The only bad part now is that I have to wait until October to read the next book in the series, The Buried, which is Hatch’s story. The Buried will definitely be at the top of my to be read list once it’s released.

I’d recommend The Broken to readers who enjoy romantic suspense/thriller stories, excellent writing with well-developed story lines. A solid FOUR PLUS STARS!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.

It's been a long time since I've read an Adult Romance/Mystery. I've been constantly reading YA for the last few years. It definitely was refreshing to take a step away from the teen angst scene and get into a book with real heart wrenching story. Now this isn't my first Shelley Coriell book, I read her YA contemporary novel Goodbye Rebel Blue back in January. So I knew going into The Broken that I was going to love her writing stlye.

The Broken was a great book from beginning to end. Be forewarned do not start reading this book at 10 PM because you will not be able to put it down. I have a great lack of sleep because of this book. But honestly it was all worth it. This book contained everything you need in a good romance mystery. It had suspense, an engaging plot and an immense group of characters that you can't help but fall in love with. I seriously never saw that person being "the Butcher", Shelley did an amazing job at keeping the readers constantly on the edge of their seats. I always love when authors don't make it easy for us.

My only thing with this book was the sexual tension between Reed and Kate. I seriously found myself grumbling at my kindle for these two to hurry up and get together already. Now I realize this books main focus wasn't the romance. But dear God I wanted more of it. I loved these two, they were perfect for each other. And I hope in book two we get to see more them being an actual couple.

Also side note, BEST SIDE CHARACTER EVER = Smokey. OMG I loved this old man to death. He was such a perfect addition to this book. He provided Kate with the family she never had, even though she tried her darnedest to push him away. But Smokey doesn't scare easy, oh heck no. He was so snarky and such a joy to read from beginning to end.

Overall, I give this book a 3/5 stars and I will definitely be continuing on with the series. I highly recommend this series especially for fans of Shelley's YA book Goodbye Rebel Blue and for fans of Nora Roberts. ***I received this as an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review***

I receive this book from NetGalley to give an honest review.
The story started off awesome, and strong and kept up with it the whole way.
There is murder, suspense, romance but nothing too sappy. My favorite character was Smokey he was just one of those old men that you could grow to love! He was just witty, full of life, laughter and love and so willing to take care of Kate even though he needed to be looked after. And she kept pushing him away for good reason as we find out later on.
Now Kate she is a semi strong character in this book, she is running away from a horrible past that no one should ever have but yet Kate did. She let it change her for the good and not the worst. But her past has come back to haunt her in more ways than one. She sees her past on her every day and it is something that she tries to deal with. She is fighting her own personal demons.
Now FBI agent Hayden is a workaholic who just lost his wife, now he has engrossed himself into finding the killer called The Butcher before he ups his or her body count even more.
The relationship between Kate and Hayden is one of those that you just keep going oh come on admit feelings and do what you do! But I am glad that they eased into it, instead of just rushing it. Because if it was a wham-bam-thank you ma'am I don't think their true feelings about one another would have surfaced as much.
But who exactly is the Butcher and why is Kate in the middle of it all?
The only true problem I had in the book is the fact when the Butcher was named I honestly felt as though he was not a character you would remember. Yes he plays a big part but I felt as though there wasn't enough information about him truly. That is why I gave this book a 4 1/2 rating instead of a solid 5 like I wanted to. Especially considering it had all the elements of a damn good book that I do have a favorite author of suspense that I will be keeping my eye on.

With the suspense within the story you are just hooked and constantly asking oh was
it this person or that person. Great twists and turns within the story.

Kate Johnson is in hiding.

Three years ago, her brother tried to kill her, and tried again after she left the hospital. Kate Johnson is a new name. She's gone from broadcast journalist to home health aide and online jewelry maker. For the last several months, she's been working for old soldier Smokey Joe, who is happy to run her online business in exchange for having someone who is patient and competent with his PTSD, and who doesn't think he's helpless because he's blind.

But the idyll is coming to an end. Someone has been killing women broadcast journalists, every four weeks, with the exact MO that Kate's brother Jason used when he tried to kill her. The killer has been dubbed the Broadcaster Butcher, and there's no doubt in Kate's mind that he's trying to force her out of hiding so that he can finish the job of killing her.

And FBI Special Agent Hayden Reed is on the trail of the Butcher, and has connected the unsuccessful attack on Katrina Erickson--Kate's former name--to the Butcher.

Kate is smart and tough and leads with her feelings. As a Reno tv journalist, she was famous for her "Justice for All" segments. Hayden is smart and tough and leads with logic, but the feelings are there, deep and powerful, even though locked down. They are both grownups. At no point is Kate a mere damsel in distress, and at no point is Hayden an off-the-shelf Knight in Shining Armor. They are both strong characters with their own strengths and weaknesses, and both major players in what happens.

The plot is nicely complex, with multiple very neatly laid red herrings to distract the reader from noticing the real Butcher. The secondary characters--Hatch, Evie, Smokey Joe, Maeve--are very well done, and Lottie is an absolute delight.

There are times when Coriell seems to be dragging the information out a bit slowly, but if you want a nicely exciting suspense story with good characters and good relationship building, this is it.

Recommended.

A very sharp edged and interesting thriller, "The Broken", by Shelley Coriell was a fast paced quick read. Featuring FBI Special Agent Hayden Reed and the "Apostles". Although don't ask me who the "Apostles" actually were. (?) That went clean over my head. Agent Reed must team up with a former victim of the "Broadcast Butcher" to track down a sadistic killer. Katy Johnson somehow had managed to avoid being killed by the Butcher. She was badly wounded and scared by the event 6 years previously. Now hiding out from Reed, the FBI, and the Butcher himself, Johnson must stay on the run. Reed finally trackers her down after another one of the Butcher's numerous gruesome murders. Reed takes Johnson into FBI custody to keep safe. This however never manages to deter the Butcher from trying to finish off Johnson. At a fairly lengthy 375 pages I found myself asking the book to move on further inside the story. Too bad book a number of times kept getting bogged down with the improbable, and very unlikely relationship between Reed and Johnson. Story line itself, when it did move was pretty good. The bit characters had lively personalities. Book's main characters although very well developed left a bit too much information out there that slowed book several times. I had the Butcher guessed a little more than half way through. All in all it was a pretty good story. A better editing job would have made this a 5 star book. I'm only giving it 4 stars for it's uneven editing job. But do not let me dissuade you from picking up a Shelley Coriell novel. I'm going to read the second "Apostles" book and try to figure out who these Apostles are.........

I was drawn into this book immediately and found myself unwilling to put it down. This story was so engrossing with its blend of mystery, suspense and romance. Kate is a survivor of a brutal serial killer and has been running and hiding from him since her ordeal. Agent Hayden Reed is a special agent who is intent on stopping the Broadcast Butcher and knows Kate is the key to stopping the murders. This story was so well written and entertaining as who found yourself trying to solve the mystery as each clue is revealed. The relationship between Kate and Hayden was slowly built on trust and compassion. Kate needed the closure that working with him could give her while Hayden needed to emotionally heal and protect her and, in a way, himself. This book took me on a fantastic journey and even while I felt a wide range of emotions, I found myself loving the ride. I highly recommend this book for readers who love a fantastic suspenseful tale with a dash of romance. This is the first book in the series and I am looking forward to the next book, The Buried.~Booklover Sue(a copy was provided for an honest review)

I read this, the first book, after the second book cuz reading a series out of order is how I roll. I LOVED the second book, The Buried. This one I didn't love but did enjoy it. Coriell writes flawed, fascinating, compelling characters and spins entrancing stories.

The mystery, and all of the people involved, unfold slowly, reeling us in. Occasionally I got frustrated with how slowly Coriell doled out info but it did work. Then events sped up and it looked as if the mystery had been solved about halfway through the story, leaving me to wonder how she was going to fill the book. But, she threw several twists at us and the story kept moving along. The resolution to the mystery however was disappointing, coming out of left field. I honestly had no clue who the killer was as every time I thought I knew, something happened to change the game. The clues to the actual killer were subtle and scattered and I had a difficult time buying into the revelation.

Despite my disappointment with the wrap up of the mystery, the mystery itself was interesting. The story was otherwise well done and the romance between Hayden and Kate pretty much perfect. And I loved the cat. :D

This debut romantic suspense had it all. Right from the start you’re absorbed into the story and the characters. Not only were the main characters interesting but the secondary characters were as well along with some of the quirks the author gave them.

The back story of both main characters was as riveting as their current day story. Their pasts should have broken them but instead made them two very tough individuals who really had no clue that they were missing something in their lives until they met each other. It wasn’t instant love – the author made sure that it was a slow build built around the story line which was trying to find a serial killer whose end goal was to kill the heroine.

During the hunt for the killer the author also leads the readers and her characters to many false conclusions. With the amount of false clues we are given its almost impossible to figure out who the killer is until the author reveals it.

I enjoyed the story and the characters and look forward to the next book in the series.

The Broken (The Apostles) by Shelley Coriell is heavy on the suspense and light on the romance. This is just great because the suspense is close-your-eyes-scary at times so it dominates this story. This book is solidly written with a smooth strong pace with very likable good guys and very atrociously bad ones. Very truthful, this is a compelling read that I wanted to read in the light of day instead of at night before going to sleep. The Broadcast Butcher is the kind of villain that gives one nightmares. And yes, I was surprised at the end.
What makes the book so memorable? First of all, the plight of Kate/Katrina sticks with you long after you finish the book. Joe, the blind older man and Hayden, FBI, are both appealing in different sort of ways. Lastly the romance is just realistic enough to be believable even though agents shouldn’t get involved with victims.
All in all, Broken is a mighty fine read for an author that is new to me. I will be on the lookout for more by her.

This was a long, drawn-out story. It lacked enough suspense to maintain interest. Pacing was extremely slow. Characters were flat and inconsistent, some quite ridiculous, like Sergeant King. This is an aging, heavy-set woman wearing three-plus inch stiletto heels to work every day. I find it impossible to believe that she is stomping around in the field (of course she is a hands-on officer) in those shoes, day in and day out.

The relationship between Kate and Hayden was quite contrived. Their "chemistry" is severely lacking. Out of nowhere they both realize that they are in love when there was very little deep communication of any kind? That's just glorified lust.

The blurb really suggested the potential for a great story. It was just poorly executed.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I love reading suspense and this one delivered in spades. Ms. Coriell introduces us to flawed characters who see surviviors in themselves as well as others. Lots of plot development, character development and who done it action until the very last page.

If you like suspense with a touch of romance, I would recommend this book.
