The book also includes a page-by-page profile of every country in the world from A to Z. For each country, we provide a totally unique gauge of what's in and out for each destination, why (or why not) to go there and where to go instead, plus key statistical information, a unique "travel ticker" of up-to-the minute facts and advice about the country and key dates for upcoming festivals and events of interest to travellers. This combination of new trends and hidden gems, plus the at-your-fingertips information needed to get you out on the road, promise to make this book an addictive habit. The first edition will be released in January 2006 and will be updated annually.
OUR STORY A beat-up old car, a few dollars in the pocket and a sense of adventure. In 1972 that’s all Tony and Maureen Wheeler needed for the trip of a lifetime – across Europe and Asia overland to Australia. It took several months, and at the end – broke but inspired – they sat at their kitchen table writing and stapling together their first travel guide, Across Asia on the Cheap. Within a week they’d sold 1500 copies and Lonely Planet was born. One hundred million guidebooks later, Lonely Planet is the world’s leading travel guide publisher with content to almost every destination on the planet.
For the consummate travler, this is probably the best book you could possibly own, if a little dangerous in that it will make you want to go everywhere, and even if you already wanted to go everywhere it will make you want to go to all those places even more. I definitely credit the 2007 edition with moving Turkmenistan to my top 10 countries-to-visit list. The annual Blue List makes for an afternoon of pure joy. Can I give it 6 stars? Maybe even seven...
I can see all the good things in many various places in the world. It is a two sided knife though, one gives us more windows on seeing places without really having to go there, the other one gives us too much encouragement to visit the places. Either way, is good.
