Unsure of who he is or where he’s going, Carter is only sure of one thing: his past is going to stay in the past. But when he gets pulled into the popular crowd at Mason County High School, he’s forced to choose: tell the truth about who he is or lie.
Lie.
And it seems to be working. His parents wanted to get him that crappy apartment because they’re never home. He crashed his car so he doesn’t have one. His weekends are filled because he has to spend time with his parents.
But when Carter is forced to open up to an outsider because of an English assignment, everything changes. There is something he sees in her, an undeniable connection. There is a need to discover what lies behind those sad eyes. But will Carter be able to lower his defenses in order to get past hers? Will he let her in, or will he choose to stay broken?
Hi there! I’m Jamie Loeak, an author, educator, and fashion lover. I’ve published The Chronicles of Light and Darkness, The Outsiders Series, The Atlantis Novella Serial, and The Star Caster. And when I’m not filled with a collision of new book ideas, I’m a Staffing Specialist at a high school in Florida. A Staffing Specialist is someone that works with the ESE (Special Education) population to ensure that their legal documents are compliant. When I’m not at work, I spend time writing, theme parking, cuddling with the cat, photoshoots, attempting to cook, exploring, and spending time with the amazing and loving bf.
When I first started reading this book, I didn't warm to Carter's character right away. He felt rough and uncaring. As we learn a bit about his past, I realized that there is a reason he comes off that way because like the title, he's broken. This book deals with the very serious issue of bullying. As someone who went through years of being bullied, it really hit home for me and stirred up a lot of buried memories. Vandelya's character reminded me a lot of myself in high school, as an outcast I had many of those same thoughts and feelings, loss of hope, etc. The last two lines of this book are epic. I won't put them in the review because it would be a spoiler, but I truly thought they wrapped the whole book up nicely. I look forward to the next book in the series!
2.5/3 Stars. This book had a lot of potential. The story was there, but some of the verbiage was awkward. I think if certain parts of the story were rewritten, some of the conversation would not feel so misplaced.
Not sure how I felt about the hero in this book. Honestly it was hard for me to believe that he fell for the heroine as quickly as he did. There seemed to be very little conversation between him and her in the beginning to feel a connection. This is just my opinion. Like I said, I think if some parts were rewritten, the book could be outstanding.
Sidenote: I liked how the story approached the issue of bullying and how it can effect kids. I honestly could not believe that the teachers were turning a blind eye to the banner that one of the kids hung about another student.
Downloaded this book free months ago and finally decided to read it. It was about emotional, physical abuse with a lot of bullying. I felt really bad for Carter and Vani in their own broken situations. Hopefully there will be a continuation with the story to find out what happens with Carter's mom and him getting back home to his Vani.
