Can you borrow a bride for nine months without her stealing your heart?
A demure member of the Richmond Ladies Sewing Circle, Faith Collins certainly isn't the type of lady who would answer an advertisement to bear a stranger's child.
Wealthy Wyoming rancher Reese Jordan isn't looking for a lady--or a bride. But when the dark-eyed beauty responds to his ad, he cannot resist offering her more than just a contract to provide him with an heir to his fortune.
As they travel west and struggle to guard their wounded hearts, Faith and Reese quickly discover just how easily business can turn to pleasure...and pleasure to love.
Book 1 of the BORROWED BRIDES Series, which includes Golden Chances, Harvest Moon and Something Borrowed
Rebecca Hagan Lee has had many different jobs, earning her beads of experience on the necklace of life with each one, but her desire to write was constant. After graduating from college, she set out to make her mark in the world of television journalism, but somewhere along the way, she decided she was a small town girl at heart and settled in a town where the media consisted of a weekly newspaper and an AM radio station.
Seeking a creative outlet, she turned to writing romance and began to write stories far different from those in the world of television news, but not that far removed from the hundreds of episodes of Daniel Boone, Big Valley, Gunsmoke and Bonanza she had watched growing up. She decided to create stories where good guys win, bad guys lose, prostitutes have hearts of gold and the heroes and heroines who fall in love and persevere are richly rewarded with incredibly bright futures and happy endings. In her world, heroines don't die or get killed off to make way for the next episode's new love interest. Her heroines get their men and help them become ideal husbands, lovers, friends and fathers.
Rebecca lives in a small southern town with her husband, a miniature schnauzer, two rat terriers, a half dozen barn cats, and two extraordinary horses. She is currently seated at the computer working hard to make her dreams come true, or riding off with her hero into the sunset. . .
Oh well. Don't buy books just because they're on sale.
Setting up the actual plot on this took fooooooorever and I never did totally believe the heroe's reasons for never wanting to get married. And she fell in love with him too quickly. I also didn't understand most of their fights, like they just got angry at each and I flipped back and couldn't figure out WHY.
Also there was a plot twist that made me laugh out loud when I saw where it was going.
A quick easy read. It took forever for the story to get to the point. I flipped through the first 40% at lightening speed.
Was it really "common" back then for men to be looking for women to have a baby and then remove her from his household?? I mean, mail-order brides were common often in those days. But to advertise for a woman to sleep with for the purpose of procreation without getting married, is that really common?
I liked Reese and Faith even though I did find Faith a little annoying with her fuming over Reese when Reese realized that she had lied. Woman, you lied. The person being lied to is entitled to feeling unhappy for a while.
I probably won't read this book again but it was not a bad book.
I really enjoyed this book and it was a first from this author for me, I'll be looking for some more. It did have the usual theme of " the man has been hurt before so he'll never love again....until he meets the h" but the story was a bit differnt from what I've read before.
Faith (h) living with her Aunts in Richmond Virginia in a house that's falling down around them after the war, she decides to answer an add she saw advertising for a wife and mother. When she goes in for the interview she couldn't believe how many women had answered the same add. The plan that her and her Aunts had come up (to pass her off as a war widow and her little sister as her daughter) had to work, they were all out of time because the taxes on their place was coming due and they had no other way to earn the money.
Reese (H) had been burned before, he fell head over heels in love with a lady of quality only to be stood up at the alter. She wanted to teach him a lesson, being that of mixed blood, that he would never forget. Now that he needs a heir he figures the only way to do that is to hire a woman to live with him , get pregnant and then leave him and the baby as soon as the baby is born. When he sees Faith knows he's found the right woman and he can't wait to have her.....well that is until the baby is born, then he never wants to see her again.
One thing that I really liked about this story is that other than Reese thinking that Faith is a war widow and a mother (wich he finds out the truth after thier first night together) there is no other secrets, hidden agendas or misunderstandings between the two. They both know what their doing and what the deal is and they both have their own reasons for going though with it. For me that was a bit refreshing.
I really enjoy reading historical fiction romances and thought this one seemed interesting. It was going well at first but then Reese turned into an utter asshole. I thought he was selfish and domineering and I HATED that Faith always apologized for doing NOTHING wrong. Yes, she lied to him about being married but... so what? Faith irritated me too because she would just let Reese push her around and after he treated her like crap she was magically in love with him? Slightly ridiculous.

I really really wanted to like this book. the theme of mail-order is one of my favorite in romance novel but this one was just a drag. I couldn't understand why heroine wanted to instigate fight all the time. well there were sweet scenes in between ( for that one more star ) but it was blah!
This was a sweet, cheesy historical romance. Don't say I didn't warn you. I love some arranged marriage (more like married by proxy ... without the groom - he sent his cousin to stand in for him) and better yet, the couple signed a contract. It's a living arrangement valid until Faith delivered a baby for Reese. Then she would leave him. Out of this world? Yes. But who cares. This is what historical romances are all about. And I also loved some brooding hero who was once burned by his ex fiance. See where I'm going here? We got the 'NO to love' hero and a beautiful, heroine who 'claimed' she was a widow - whereas she was truly a virgin. Oh the white lies. And when she delivered the baby ... she's supposed to leave her baby and leave her supposed husband. Oh goody.
Reese Jordan a notable rogue borne out of circumstances refused to be married but wishes for a heir. Faith so strong and bearing the burden of many, is forced to be the mother of a child by a man she only came to know as her employer.
What a twist of fate in this novel. Although, it seemed like their attraction was purely lust more than anything else. It was beautiful but it missed a tad of the times
I just discovered Rebecca Hagan Lee's writing, this was my first book by her, and I really enjoyed it. The writing just flows and before you know it, you're half through the book and getting concerned you're going to finish too soon and have to leave the two characters behind.
Characters are complex, though their backgrounds could have been more developed. Actually, the whole book could have been developed and expanded, should the author had insisted on some details, on making the conflicts more deep and more difficult to solve... However, that would have probably hampered the flow of the writing and made the book boring instead of entertaining.
I liked Reese, the hero, a lot, though some might classify him in the section alpha-jerk... He's really insecure and balances this with harshness. He came through to me as undecided and shifty, and his depth of character as well as his flaws could have used some developing.
Faith is sweet and endearing and I liked her a lot, as well as the secondary characters which had their own side stories.
Really enjoyed this simple story about Reese (who is part English, part Cherokee, part Scots) who is a rancher in Wyoming and Faith, an impoverished Southern lady trying to survive after the Civil War.
Faith's immediate love for Reese reads as the typical sheltered virgin who may be confusing lust and physical comfort with love. After all, she's suddenly gone from impoverished old maid who is worried about keeping herself, her aunts and her younger sister alive, to a woman who is having regular sex and surrounded by an instant family and living in an environment where money is no longer a concern.
Nevertheless, it's a sweet story. Reese has his own insecurities, which drove him to make this contract in the first place. And his characters is also a little inconsistent since someone that insecure and supposedly tough wouldn't be such a secret romantic and softy either.
Still, all the characters are interesting and likeable, which made for a good read.
A cute, fluffy western romance. It had the typical assortment of silly misunderstandings between the main characters that had me rolling my eyes, but even though they could have done with a hit from the clue bat there was no outside drama making things extra difficult for them. I read this because I was after something light that would leave me with some feel good fuzzies and the inevitable HEA was rather sweet and performed that job admirably, so I consider this a successful read.
This was another good read by this author. It is a the first book of the series, but it is a standalone story. The storyline was a little different than I have read before in this genre. This was Reese and Faith’s story.
Reese has his reasons, which I won’t spoil, but he needs an heir and it not looking for love to get it. So he goes about gaining an heir in an interesting way only there is a slight mishap that keeps it interesting.
Faith is taking care of her family. She lives with her aunts, cousin and sister in the family home that has been dilapidated by war. They created a sewing society to bring in money, but if they don’t get more money soon they will lose their home and land. The ladies find an ad in the paper that only Faith can answer and their scheming begins.
Reese and Faith have an instant attraction, but their relationship starts with lies that are soon discovered. I like that they are disclosed earlier in the story so we aren’t agonizing over them the entire time. They both were hard for me to pull for considering the circumstances in which they are together. Reese has a tender side which I loved. He was great with Joy, Faith’s little sister.
I don’t want to give anything away because this story has some twists that keep it interesting. There is also love, romance and sexy times mixed in. I really enjoyed it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Reese has a scheme to have a respectable heir, and puts an ad in the paper to find a woman willing to bare his child.
With a mistake in the wording of the ad, Faith applies, thinking she'll be a governess to his heir. Their attraction is immediate, and with her family home's taxes coming due, she decides to make the deal.
She never explains her reasons for lying about a number of things, and although he's angry initially, he doesn't ask her any further.
I like that prejudice is a theme, so timely in our current upheavals in the Trump regime in the US. But of course, this is not a political novel, so it's not the main story.
It takes many family members and friends to help sort them out, but it works out in the end, of course.
This book had me glued from start to finish its a roller coaster read. Reese is a pig headed man but as the story unfolds you begin to see the subtle signs of a man who has been hurt yet longs for a family someone he can love but can't hurt him, along comes Faith so young and naive but as you read the pages further she blossoms from a young lady into a women. This book also touches on the prejudice of people with mixed bloodlines as was the norm in those days. The emotions and feelings you feel when reading, the ups and the downs, the funny and the sad bits, that Reese and Faith go through to get to there final destination is epic. I would love more books like this a pleasure to read yet hard to leave I look forward to book 2.
This is the third book I've read by this author--the first in each of three series. I simply can not say enough good things about the writing style of this author. It kept me reading straight through to the end--I could not put them down! There are times when you will laugh, when you may get upset with the hero------and if you don't fall in love with Faith's five year old sister--what a lovable little scamp.
If there is a lesson to be learned from this book it is--read and then re-read what you have written--and make triply sure what you wrote is what you meant!!!
Now off I go to find the others in these series--yes I enjoyed them that much!
Reese Jordan learned his lesson well. From his bitter experience of trying to wed a high society bride and was jilted and laughed at in the process (his pride and ambitions ground to the dust), he had a brilliant and foolish idea of renting a womb to conceive his heir. So he put on an ad for an "heir~maker" via telegram and sent it to 2 newspapers ~ but the one he sent to Richmond, Virginia had an extra conjunction (for), thereby altering the context. From such a series of confusing events will start Reese Jordan's self~made dilemma and soul~searching angst to finally finding True Love. Funny and with more meat in it "mail~order~bride" or something with a twist to the common story line.

This is a very presumptuous idea thought up by a man of course to advertise getting a woman to have is their, aka child. Was this the best or only way he could do it? Find out for yourself with this first book in the Borrowed Brides Series. It actually covers more than you can ever imagine will fun and interesting twists and turns along the way. David next thank you for a wonderful love story. I wish you continue success. DH from New York City P.s.A must read......
What a lovely, well written story. it all started off as a way to improve their lives - she with the means to support family members and he with a desperately wanted heir. The story tells of two people who discover love but refuse to admit it to each other. With a few unexpected twists unfolding it's not until the last chapter this stubborn couple realize their love is worth pursuing. A really enjoyable read from beginning to end.
I enjoyed this book for what it is. An easy relaxing read without much deep thought required. I enjoyed that the story line took into effect the taboo actions of the times. The characters had prior baggage which affected their actions because of feelings for self-preservation. People have reasons why they act the way they do and not all people handle situations the same. That is why we are all different. Don't attempt to analyze it too much just enjoy their story.
Enjoyed it from the beginning to the end!! Love that tempy and kevin found each other again!!!!! Reese took ages to be courageous and finally stopped faith from leaving but still didnt do it in person but through a telegram!! which was annoying. Oh i loved the ending!! The scandal that the detailed wedding announcement would cause in richmond had me cackling!! Really liked david alexander and reeses cherokee family! Excellent characters.
Rebecca Hagan Lee has given us a Civil War era story full of depictions of how hard it was for widows and single women of the time. The overwhelming responsibility, the feelings of helplessness, the determination, and sacrifice needed to survive was sometimes unfathomable. That's where our heroine Faith finds herself. With all the drama and angst of a cornered woman determined to make things better, this is quite a read.
Faith is a very stubborn lady. Reece is even more stubborn. Ravenged from the war, Faith is living with four war widows that need money fast. Reece is wealthy needing an heir but is afraid to commit to marriage because past pain. A simple contract solution for both eventually becomes a problem, because that contract, fear, and stubbornness begins to break their hearts.... did I mention they were both stubborn?
Golden Chances is a story of how pride is used as armor. Reese and Faith have wrapped themselves with the armor of pride and honor. Neither are willing to risk being vulnerable out of fear of rejection. It is a solid romance when both realize they have to admit their feelings or lose everything that matters.
This book has a unique story with well written charactersThe plot is set in the post Civil War South and the new Wyoming territory. Native American and other ethnic groups interact. Good romance plot and characters also. Family loyalty is a strong component. I plan to read the other books in this series.
A series of romance in different situations, all entertaining, some more than others
A delightful group of characters and a pleasant series of romances. If you enjoy hot sexual encounters, you should enjoy this goup of tales, and you are sure to find someone to identify with among the characters.
I ended up quitting 2/3 of the way through. I kept waiting for it to get better and it enever happened. I found Reese to be overbearing, high handed, a total @ss and Faith to be a weak little thing who allowed him to be verbally abusive and controlling. Not my kinda story. I tried to let it grow on me, but I just couldn't.
The use of telegrams was nice. Loved the snowy buffalo herd. The coward stuff was a little wearing. The idea was not really something I think would ever be considered. The very real possibility of dying in childbirth made the idea of a surrogate something maybe more modern than the story. But then again women and men desperate for children is a tale as old as time.
This story had its ups and downs. I cried a few tears as well. The arrangment turned to love with a dramatic twist towards the end. The book was filled with surprises. Worth checking out for Historical Romance lovers or any Romance lover.
