This book was originally published in German under the title: "Am Flugloch". Translated by F. Celis it covers a year of observation at the entrance to a bee hive, with specific observations and a suggested explanation.
These observations are grouped by the seasons and should enable a beekeeper to understand what is happening without in the colony without having to open the hive and disrupt the bees' sanctuary.
Helpful little book about what to look for outside the bee hive in order to sort out what might be going on INside the bee hive without opening it up and disturbing the bees. Would be wonderful to have this little book written from someone living in my precise area of the world, and I guess that’s what making notes on the bees and spending time observing them is all about.
Old school but very knowledgeable expert with sage advice. You don't have to open and disturb the hive to get a sense of their well-being. I found his information on behavior was really valuable to that end.
A detailed analysis of behaviour observed outside the hive and descriptios of how this is related to events and activities inside the hive.
A very short book - less than 70 pages but not a quick read by any means. Every page is packed with useful information. A must for any serious beekeeper.
Very helpful to me as a new beekeeper, great to have some idea about my hives general health from watching the hive entrance. I could sit there for hours watching the drama unfold. A classic.
