Trevor Bryce is an author I’ve encountered before and generally speaking is a thorough and professional academic writer. This book was therefore a bit of a disappointment – not because it was bad in any, but because I was expecting more from it. The book is quite short, and Bryce spends a fair amount of page space setting up the major players and describing how the exchange of correspondence would’ve taken place. When he does come to the letters themselves, he often quotes extracts from them instead of in full, the rest of each chapter being an admittedly decent analysis of events described. I would’ve preferred more of the letters themselves.

كان طريق الزواج والمصاهرات مع ملوك مصر ذا اتجاه واحد. كان فرعون مصر راغباًعلى الدوام في استقبال زوجات اجنبيات
إلا أن أيا من فراعنة مصر لم يوافق أبداّ على إرسال اميرات مصريات ليكن زوجات لملوك أجانب، كان ذلك تقليداّ راسخاً لا استثناء له (...) كان السبب يعود لكبرياء الفراعنة واعتدادهم بأنفسهم ،وفي المحافظة على صورة الفراعنة الراسخة كأهم وأعظم ملوك المنطقة (ص 181)

غير أن الملك البابلي كاداشمان-انليل حاول اختبار متانة وقوة ذلك العرف المصري ، وكتب الى امنحتب الثالث يطلب منه ابنته كزوجة له . واتت الاجابة حاسمة:
"لم يحدث من بداية الزمان أن اعطيت ابنه ملك مصري كزوجة لأي ملك أجنبي"
واصر كاداشمان-نليل على طلبه في رسالة تالية " أنت الملك ، بإمكانك أن تفعل ما تشاء" وظل فرعون مصر على صلابته( ص 182(

وطبقا لما سجله هوميروس كانت مصر من اغنى البلاد بالنباتات الطبية ، حتى انه كان يعتبر ان كل مصري كان يعد طبيبا ويذهل اي امرئ غير مصري بغزارة معلوماته الطبية.
ذكر المؤرخ هيرودوت أمثلة كثيرة على السمعة الطبية العظيمة التي كانت تشتهر بها مصر.

"تلك العقاقير التي ارسلتها لعلاج عيني كانت فاعلة ، من فضلك ارسل لي المزيد منها"
ورد عليه رمسيس بسعادة من له فضل " أمرت برياماحو ان يحضر إليك المزيد من تلك العقاقير الشافية لعيون أخي"

ملحوظة عامة: كلما قرأت في المصادر القديمة الاصلية (وهو امر مفيد جدا ) ومنها هذه المراسلات بين ملوك وعظماء الشرق ما قبل التاريخ ومعظمها بين الملوك الفراعنة وأمراء تلك المنطقة أدركت اننا لم نأت بجديد فالدولة العميقة هي هي والبيروقراطية هي هي وشغل المخابرات والعملاء السريين ودبلوماسية السم في العسل هي هي
وفي لحظات كثيرة كنت اشعر من السياق كأننا في العصر الحالي ...
فين الجديد والتجديد ؟ وأين مفرادت العصر الحديث والتقدم اذا كنا لم نتقدم كثيرا وان الصراعات هي هي ولغة المصالح هي هي والتوازنات الدولية والقاعدة الاهم على الاطلاق في اي زمن : الاقوى يفرض منطقه ، بس برضه القوة سلاح ذو حدين وهناك ميزان دقيق تقاس به الامور والسياسة هي كيف تسوس البشر في نهاية المطاف...

This one was hard to grade - because in parts it is really good and very interesting.

Then there is some issues I have. The big one is that if you give a book the title "Letters of..." it would be nice to see more of the actual letters. They are present, but most of them are just referred to, which is quite a pity.

And I have some issues with the editing of the book. I am usually quite lenient when it comes to that, but in this case, it was a couple of things that was repeated over and over and over and over again. First of all, there is a lot of exclamation marks. I wouldn't care if there is one or two, but in here, it sometimes started to look a bit silly. The second, and by far weirdest, is the missing hyphens. When you have a word on a line that is too long for that line, you can split it so the end of that word lands on the next line, to do this you put in a hyphen in the word. Many times this is done correctly, which should be no surprise, but surprisingly often the hyphen is missing (in a few cases more than once on a single page), so that you end up with, for example: "... any hopes they had for regaining the Hittite throne for themselves and their descend ants proved unattainable." (p. 221) If this happens too many times, it really takes your focus from the text.

i just read half of it, but there are something very good, like the messengers, the languages which the tablet was used, the gifts tradition etc. it is really interesting.
