Daniel Stephen Sugerman (aka Danny) was the second manager of the Los Angeles based rock band The Doors, and wrote several books about Jim Morrison and The Doors.
This was a great story of the Doors. Each album is discussed in detail to include their six studio albums but also the 'Absolute Live' album (which is great in my opinion). Each album addresses the production/musical distinction/musical evolution and story of the band members. There are countless interviews from the bandmates (including Jim Morrison's), lots of chronological photographs, and the wild journey that is the Doors.
Just like the Val Kilmer movie and the Venice Beach scene, 'Moonlight Drive is actually the song that first summoned the Doors into existence.', pg. 24
There is an interesting inset article about the spirit of a Native American medicine man inhabiting the body of Jim Morrison. It talks about the roadside accident he witnessed as a kid, how he felt the spirit of a shaman enter his body, and how that resonated with him for the rest of his life. Shamanism and mysticism played a huge role for the remainder of his life and influenced his lyrical writing. After the story of the Doors, the editor gives lots of cool stuff about the band. Included are the stories and projects of the remaining members: Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. There is a breakdown of standout live performances: 'Live at The Matrix, 1967', 'Live at the Hollywood Bowl, 1968', and 'Live in Boston, 1970' to name a few. Also films/documentaries about the Doors: "The Doors (1991)" starring Val Kilmer, "The Doors R-Evolution (2013)", and "When You're Strange (2009)". Lastly a list of the Top 10 Books about Jim Morrison and the Doors.
I really enjoyed reading the story of one my favorite bands. The Doors were different: jazz/blues musicians and wild poet fused together to make unique music. There's way more to the story but this is a good starting point. Thanks!
Apparently Danny Superman was a 14-year-old kid who hitchhiked to Doors' concerts and skipped school to work in their press office and became a friend to Jim Morrison - this book is his collection of press stories and interviews and is presented chronologically so it's a complete history. The coolest part. The coolest part of the book was Superman's introduction, providing firsthand accounts. This book made me think of the band members a little more as men than as, say gods, but it also grew their legend for me. And I immediately started listening to their music.
What an easy job Danny Sugerman had simply compiling photographs and articles from his scrapbook of The Doors. The quality of the photographs is excellent; I recognized quite a few from the concert program they sold in 1968. There's also tons of clippings from Eye Magazine, (William Randolph Hearst's cashing in on the hippie scene magazine from the late Sixties), Teenset Magazine, and Crawdaddy Mag. It's funny seeing a wild rock band wearing collared dress shirts.
A collection of photographs, articles and interviews which serve to decsribe the rise and fall of Jim Morrison and the Doors. One comment struck home particularly poignantly, to the effect that the Doors pais their dues after they were successful... I think this is probably true. Morrison could not resist taking a stick and poking at the snake - the snake that is Amerika's hypocrisy and he paid the price...
Still the music was great, and the lyrics stuck in the memory for long time after the Circus had rolled off into the night.
The public's outcry against the Doors was a sign of the times in the late-60s and early-70s. Morrison became a scapegoat because of the sometimes outrageous comments made on stage and the false accusations made against him. The book is very good as it takes you inside the Doors and how difficult the band's union was because of the distrations from the public and having Jim Morrison as a member of the band.
this book is wonderful,, brought me back some years, but i loved it all! those days are days never to be re written or do overs.... see you on the other side!
