Oahspe

Rate this book
All new 2016 "Eloist Edition" This definitive volume is the first completely re-typeset, hardcover edition of Oahspe published in the USA since 1891. Oahspe has gone through at least six editions and over 20 printings in the USA and England since 1882. All prior editions were either taken from the original 1891 electroplates or a photocopy of the 1882 edition. This 8.5"x11" hardcover volume is nearly 900 pages in length, gilded, silk-like lining, and with two ribbon markers. Constructed of only the most durable materials available. This edition has undergone an intensive, five-year editing process.
* A greatly expanded glossary, expanded index, and new endnotes.
* An all new introduction and supplementary appendix.
* All discrepancies between the 1882 and 1891 editions have been footnoted.
* All portraits and plates have been completely rescanned and enhanced. This is a beautifully constructed "coffee table"-sized book that any true bibliophile would be proud to display. The title of the book, Oahspe, means literally "Sky, Earth and Spirit" ("O" for sky, "ah" for earth and "spe" for spirit). The book is a product of automatic writing, which occurred through the hands of a medium, Dr. John B. Newbrough, over the course of one year (1881) in New York City. The book stated that it was written by an overshadowing of angelic beings, who are not a separate order in creation, but are actually our elder brothers and sisters, once mortals like us, but now high-raised in wisdom through countless years of growth and experience. They stated that Oahspe is not a perfect book, nor is it the alpha and omega of knowledge. Rather, it is like a traveler's guide to greater spiritual growth and understanding. Its purpose is to give us an insight, while yet in mortality, of what the world of spirit is really like, and what the general history of the world has been. As a result, it gives us greater clarity regarding our true purpose and destiny as the immortal, eventually angelic, souls that we are. Oahspe is easily the most unique book in the English language. Its objective is formidable, for it states that within its pages it has "herein made known the plan of [the Creator's] delightful creations, for the resurrection of the peoples of the earth." Oahspe also states that the book's purpose is "to teach mortals how to attain to hear the Creator's voice, and to see His Heavens, in full consciousness, whilst still living on the earth; and to know of a truth the place and condition awaiting them after death." If you are able to comprehend Oahspe's mind-expanding perspective on the universe that we inhabit both now and in an eternal future, and if you are able to free your mind of the shackles of the limited teachings of the past, it will bring you to a state of understanding that will change your life. You will never see the earth, its people, or the stars above your head in the same way ever again.

WTF! i keep this book around to scare the crap out of myself when i'm feeling particularly open to far out ideas. either there was some heavy duty crazy in this guys noggin, or we are wrong about nearly everything. even if its little bit of both, i'd still be quite concerned.

OAHSPE was written in America in 1881 by Brother John B. Newbrough. Oahspe is filled with inspiration and spiritual truths. Oahspe is pronounced: O as in o'clock, AH as in father, SPE as in speak. Oahspe means SKY, EARTH and SPIRIT. Oahspe teaches man to recognize his oneness with the "infinite spirit of the universe", and accept this infinite intelligence, as his guiding light and inspiration. Oahspe is a miracle in itself. It contains the highest ethical, moral and spiritual teachings. Oahspe answers many questions, explaining many profound myseries. It floods the mind of the new reader with "New Light" on subjects life and death. Oahspe is a Bible of advanced spiritual truth, universal light and knowledge. Oahspean's have a Declaration of Principles: Articles of Faith
1. We believe there is but one ruler in the universe, and He is the Creator, the Great Spirit, the Almighty, Jehohvih; all was and ever shall be.
2. We believe our corporeal bodies are His and dedicated and covenanted to Him, to be in His service during our lifetimes.
3. We believe in the continuity of life and that man's evolution is never finished.
4.We believe that every individual is responsible for his own acts, and that no man can carry the sins of another.
5.We believe each individual born into the world is a child of the Creator, and that all men are brothers.
6.We affirm the universe is governed by the law of the Creator, which is absolute, eternal, unchangeable and is sufficient reason for all things seen and unseen.
7.Although we believe no book is infallible, we accept the Oahspe Bible as our guide to daily living.
8.We believe it is our duty to help our brothers and sisters of the Human Family; to give love, wisdom, truth, and service and to do these at every opportunity in order that they may learn to help themselves and others. To become ministers, administering to others.
9.We believe the greatest satisfaction and happiness of one's life is to serve others, especially the young. Raising them up to work with the hands and well as the mind and teaching them to work in communities, to establish the worship of the Father, and to help bring about His Kingdom on Earth, and world peace and brotherhood.
10.We believe that any desire, thought, or act, which will injure one's self or another except in self defence, to be unjust and immoral. We abjure war or violence, discard of conflict in any form, and will not aid or abet in it. And we believe it is our duty to live in Peace and Harmony with the entire Human Family. To strive to overcome all tendencies of hate, jealousy, malice, conceit, envy, deceit, and all forms of physical, mental, emotonal, and moral weakness. To increase knowledge of one's self, of life, and of nature; and to use this knowledge properly for selfimprovement; to work toward spiritual developement of love, wisdom, peace, universal understanding, that we may be of greater service to God, our Country, our community, and our Fellow Man.
Oahspe has no mortal leader. It is a Bible from Jehovih to teach man to hear and speak with his creator.
I would recommend Oahspe to anyone.

I've read and reread this trying to find the magic in it that David Gascoyne, British Expatriate poet, found in it. The issue: said magic is not in fact present. Gascoyne was under the influence of an early form of amphetamine at the time and this is what made it important.

It is goofy. I'm still going to buy a copy

Consideration as literature - wikipedia

The Urantia Book has been enjoyed by some as a form of science fiction, historical fiction or fantasy. The Urantia Book is noted for its high level of internal consistency and an advanced writing style.

Skeptic Martin Gardner, in a book otherwise highly critical of The Urantia Book, writes that it is "highly imaginative" and that the "cosmology outrivals in fantasy the cosmology of any science-fiction work known to me."

Gooch says that for nonbelievers, the book is a mixture of being "fascinating, inspiring, compelling, haunting, entertaining, annoying, incomprehensible, and always wordy."

A NEW “AMERICAN” BIBLE FROM THE 19TH CENTURY

An American dentist, John Ballou Newbrough (1828–1891), published this book, ‘OAHSPE: A New Bible’ in 1882, purportedly through the process of ‘automatic writing.’ Followers of it are known as ‘Faithists.’

The Editor’s Preface to the first edition states, “When a man holds up a book, and days, ‘You must believe this, because it says, ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ should we not pity that man? Does he not comprehend the liberty of man to acquire knowledge? Any book that imparts knowledge of the life and destiny of man, is a good book. Any book that unfolds the character and person of Jehovah, and the wonder and glory of His creations, is a good book. When a book gives us information of things we know not of, it should also give us a method of proving that information to be true. This book covers that ground. The day has arrived, when men will not accept proclamations and assertions; he wants plausible reasons, or substantial proofs, that the authority be not merely a pretense, but a demonstrable fact. The time of man-worship is at an end; readers no longer accept a book as good and great, merely because any certain one wrote it. The book must have merits of its own, otherwise it will soon pass out of existence. If a book were to fall down from the sky with Jehovah’s signature to is, man would not accept the book on that account. Why, then, should anything be said about how this book was written? It is not a destroyer of old systems or religions. It reveals a new one, adapted to this age, wherein all men can be as brethren.”

The Preface to the Present Edition explains “OAHSPE means sky, earth, and spirit and it the title to a new bible given to the world in the year 1881… Strange as the book itself if the account of its birth. A graduate in both medicine and dentistry, Dr. John B. Newbrough was also gifted with astonishing extra sensory perception. For many years his hobby was psychic research… The years between 1871 and 1881 were spent in spiritual purification during which he became aware of spiritual guidance. Instructed to purchase a typewriter… Upon sitting at the instrument an hour before dawn he discovered that his hands typed without his conscious control. In face he was not aware of what his hands typed unless he read what was being printed… At the end of a year when the manuscript was completed he was instructed to read and publish the book titled OAHSPE, a New Bible.

“OAHSPE purports to have been written at the command of God, who states that He is not the Creator but is simply chief executive officer (similar to our President of the U.S.) for our planet earth… This strange book informs us that the world entered a new era in the year 1848 how the new era is different from those which preceded it and what changes will come to humanity within the next few years… OAHSPE is made up of thirty-six books covering the history of the planet, the history of the human race, the history of every major religion, past and present, and analysis of today and a prophecy for tomorrow…

“This book tells what light, heat, electricity, gravity, etc., are, what causes them, what holds planets in their places, gives the many cycles of time used by the ancients in their tables of prophecy, tells of relativity, curvature of space, lens effect of a planet’s atmosphere and other recent discoveries of the astro physicists… The object of OAHSPE is not to supplant the former Bibles, nor Vedas nor other sacred books… it is a new Bible… is pronounced ‘O’ as in o’clock, ‘AH’ as in father and ‘SPE’ as in speak.”

Here are some excerpts from the book: “Not infallible is this Book, OAHSPE… Neither are, nor were, the revelations within this OAHSPE wholly new to mortals. He same things have been revealed at the same time unto many… Because this light is thus comprehensive, embracing corporeal and spiritual things, it is called the beginning of the KOSMON ERA. And because it is related to earth, sky and spirit, it is called OAHSPE.” (OAHSPE, 24-26)

“Because a man cannot understand a thing, shall he cry out, MIRACLE! Now I declare I have done no miracle; nor hath Zarathustra… I have found, O Asha, what man is not accustomed to, he calleth a miracle; after he hath seen a matter frequently, he calleth it a natural law. What man hast thou found that comprehendeth the first cause the first cause of anything under the sun?” (Fragapatti XIII, 2-3)

“Whoever serveth his own conception of the All Highest, making himself a servant thereto, is on the right road; and, in the plan of the universe, will drift into an association adapted to himself.” (Fragapatti XXVI, 12)

“I come not for one race alone; but unto all men; as by My spirit I created I them all alive, so is My hand over them to all eternity.” (Divinity XIV, 2)

“Wherefore philosophers have erroneously attributed their observations as having proved certain gases and certain metals within the sun’s atmosphere.” (Cosmogony and Prophecy II, 22)

“It if not the part of this book to deal with spiritual matters, only so far as enableth the student to begin etheric knowledge.” (Cosmogony and Prophecy X, 1)

“The age of the Ezra Bible is not… from the time of Moses, but from the time of Ezra, 2344 ears B.K.” (Saphah 59)

“For there be servants on earth, who neither read nor write, that are better developed in their talents and members that many of the rich, and kings and philosophers… Neither is the preference to the rich, nor the poor, nor to the philosopher, nor the fool; for any of these may be as dwarfs in some talent or part, whilst also any of these may be a most perfect main in spirit. So, God established, through his high-raised officers, schools and colleges and factories, heavenly, adapted to the spirits of the dead, even as similar places are established on the earth for mortals.” (Eskra VIII, 5-8)

“And mortal sects… did the same thing. The presbyterian professed the true Kriste, but denounced all others as false; the Methodist professed the true Kriste, but denounced all others as false; the Mormon professed the true Kriste, but denounced all others as false; the Roman Catholics also professed the true Kriste, but denounced all others as false. Even so was it with all of them, and none of them practiced righteousness and good works, but were warriors and moneygetters, for self sake.” (Es, XVIII 17)

“Neither shalt thou judge thyself by any sacred book, or any bible, in all the world; nor by the words within them purporting to be my words, or the words of any God, Lord, of Savior. For I have abolished all such sacred books and bibles and words and sayings contained in them, purporting to be my words and the words of any God, Lord or Savior.” (Judgment XX, 24-25)

For anyone interested in this religion, this book will be of interest.

Allot of peeps have an opinion of this book but its just words on a piece of paper. Actually what is more interesting is how a person finds a book because it represents something more real than what is written in the book. For me, I actually learned about this book from reading Ra Material (Paperback)
by James Allen McCarty. Every book read by a person bears witness to the unseen forces that move them. The reader can only guess at what draws them hither or thither to read this or that, but taking a step back at looking at the bigger picture you can see the arc of a person in their life. So it is useless to discuss the goodness of this book by the content within, what is objective is cause for the book in the desire of those who read it. It exists because people exist who have a need for it to exist. Spirituality needs no prophets or hidden knowledge to be potent. What is true is potent and ever present, what is false fades away into dust and is forgotten.

hands down the best book I have read. absurd truth most can't properly interpret and integrate as evidenced by the followers of oahspe who fall into the trap of fundamentalism instead of taking the esoteric spiritual path reading it. following traditional logic it's the most ridiculous text I have ever read but spiritually it's the most profound piece of work I have ever come across. very weird very cool. the history around it is just as weird and cool. truly the bible of the weird wild west.
