What did I just read 😬 This book is a light-hearted, unserious slice of life transmigration novel with a very easy-to-follow plot. I still don't know how I feel about it. Will I still buy and read the final volume coming out March of 2024? Yes. Will I recommend this to people? Not likely unless you like/request the following (spoilers below):

-Mpreg
-FISH mpreg
-Sexy time in merman form (nothing too descriptive)
-Focus shift on the baobeis once they are born (personally I don't like kids in my books but I am probably in the minority here).
-silly/goofy humor

I do love their relationship which is what is keeping me interested but I'm ready for this story to be wrapped up.

I don't think I'll ever read the word "skewered" the same again!

Initially I wasn't going to continue on with this series after vol 2. However, I had a really horrible week at work and decided to impulsively buy this to cheer myself up.

And I don't regret it.

The beginning is very funny especially when Li Yu is worrying about Prince Jing's reaction to him turning into a fish.

I thought the m-preg would bother me but it doesn't go on for ages. More time is spent on Prince Jing and Li Yu learning how to be parents to 4x babies. The children were cute and the scenes with them all as a family were very wholesome.

Our MC's also get married in this volume. The 'sexy times' happen very much off page and aren't in detail. That might annoy some people but that didn't bother me personally.

Why 4* instead of 5 despite really enjoying it?

Because the middle of this novel felt like filler. I also really hated the subplot of Li Yu turning into a Merman and then he and Prince Jing doing the deed in that form. I think the author meant it to be funny but for me it was unnecessary and cringey.

I have decided to read volume 4 because I've realised this has become a comfort series for me despite its flaws and it going on for longer than it should. I still enjoy reading about the characters and appreciate the easy plot which doesn't use up to much mental energy to follow.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I've adored each volume in this series, and this one in particular had me smiling throughout. It was just pure joy and domestic fluff. Prince Jing and Li Yu are so in love and so in sync with each other; they make such a great pair in so many ways. And their babies are unbelievably precious. I love that they each have their own personalities too. There are so many hilarious, sweet, and meaningful moments in here. The overall plot is wrapping up too, with only one volume left. While I'll be sad to see this end, this family deserves all the love and peace to come.

Who says danmei novels are always full of angst? The third volume of "The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish" by Xue Shan Fei Hu is thoroughly wholesome with only the slightest indication of danger. The premise is still that Li Yu has transmigrated into the world of a novel that he was reading and is being prompted into action by a fish scamming computer system, which is significantly less active in this volume than in the earlier volumes.

The relationship between Prince Jing and Li Yu has now become extremely domestic and intimate so the fish scamming system is less necessary to drive the plot forward. The setting is in ancient China at an imperial court but the premise is the fish out of water trope with added an added mpreg element. There are love, marriage and four fish babies, who all have very distinct personalities both in their fish and human forms.

The novel is not graphic about how the fish babies are created or how they are born, but they are clearly the product of love between Li Yu and the prince, who shyly insists on being called by his first name, Tianchi, to prevent formality from creating a distance between them. The four sons are clearly written to be cute, but also used as an aspect of court intrigue. As a mute, Prince Jing was never seen as a realistic heir to the throne, but with four healthy sons, he suddenly jumps to the front of the queue.

Like the previous volumes, this third volume is not profound. The characters have some dynamic development but they are not psychologically well developed and therefore remain rather flat characters. The plot drives their interactions and places them in different situations to which they then react. The point of this series is to tell a light and fluffy tale about the romance between two people, who are blessed with a family after having survived some tribulation together. It is cute, but not deep!

I totally forgot to rate this last year!

My guilty pleasure is omegaverses and mpregs lol. So reading this was hilarious and so intriguing! So unique.

Who would have thought to have a fishy bloop out eggs and then they poof, turn to babies! Like...! ꉂ(˵˃ ᗜ ˂˵)

Then also, merman sexy time? So hilarious!

I really love how sweet the couple is. This is one of those books where something so ridiculous happens that you just can't help but giggle with how well it works! Lol

Ah, sometimes I just need a peaceful story that makes my heart happy.. I’ve had a rough few weeks so reading something cute and fun was much needed.

My reading pace has been slow because I’ve been busy (traveled to Korea and china and then working working). However, I feel like this has helped me get out of my reading slump a little.

I’m looking forward to the conclusion… but I’ll miss my fish baby Li Yu.

Vol 3 was a little slow to start at the beginning, or maybe it was just me. But I had a feeling that the part at Western border was kind of uneventful - maybe because this novel is more lighthearted compared to the majority of other danmei I read. However, I also have to say that it was a nice intermezzo in between more angsty ones. All these cute and fluffy moments!

Prince Jing filled two cups and handed one to Li Yu.
Li Yu was just about to bring it to his lips when he snuck a glance at Prince Jing.
Prince Jing was also holding a cup, but he wasn't moving. He just had his arm extended. Li Yu immediately realized what he wanted. He reached his arm over as well.
The two interwined their arms and drank the wine together.

On this night when he was destined to lose something, Li Yu thought, he should say something sweet to initiate it.
He'd thought about this scene thousands of times. It should be playful, yet lure Prince Jing in so that he couldn't resist. Something Prince Jing would never be able to forget.
Remembering Prince Jing's whole deal with "absorbing essence," Li Yu found his inspiration. Imitating the charachters in the novels, he teased, "Husband, we yao need to absorb essence..."

So, yes I still loved the start of their more domestic relationship - marriage and Li Yu getting pregnant (this time for real, lol). Prince Jing, the man that you are!! Immediately ready to take responsibilty without even knowing that you can get your man with child(ren). Why is it always 'I will kill for you' and 'I will die for you', what about 'I will raise our four fish babies with you!' 🥰

"Your Highness, these are the eggs I laid," Li Yu repeated shyly. "I'm sorry I told you I couldn't have children before. I only found out recently that I... I'm a fish that can give birth."
Prince Jing felt his entire world had exploded in a flash of lightning.
Slowly, carefully, he contemplated Li Yu's words.
So Xiaoyu could give birth.
So Xiaoyu had laid four eggs.
So...
He knew that fish eggs became the children of fish, which meant this was-
Prince Jing suddenly felt dizzy. These were his and Xiaoyu's children!

Fish babies were funny addition to the story, especially after they transformed from fish into human babies. Li Yu and Prince Jing have their hands full with them (very litreally too). And especially Wang Xi was so happy to be able to take care of so many little gongzi. It was also funny how everyone just had to except that Li Yu gave birth to them himself, because well, there's no proof that it's imposible for men to get pregnant. And even imperial physicans were like: "His Higness' seed must be very potent then." 😂😂

The Emperor is very fond of his (fish)grandchildren as well. I never particullary cared about his charachter but he's very adorable as grandfather, and little babies like their grandpa very much too.

I already talked about this in my previous reviews how I love the connection between Li Yu and Mu Tianchi, and how they have better communication then most book couples, despite one of them being mute. There has been some minor miscommunication between them considering Li Yu being a fish but most of the time they are really one of the healthiest danmei couples 🥰🥰

"Y-Your... no, are you asking me to call you by your name?"
prince Jing nodded seriously.
He finally got it right!
Tears sprang to Li Yu's eyes. Prince Jing wanted to call him by his name - this was perfectly normal, since they were married now. It seemed a bit distant to be calling him "Your Highness" all the time.
Prince JIng didn't want him to be distant.
"Then... Tianchi." Li Yu smiled shyly. Prince Jing's name was quite tasteful, so he couldn't help saying it again after the first time. "Tianchi!"
Prince Jing responded. A smile spread across his face, and he held Li Yu's hand.

I was glad we get back more of Ye Qinghuan and Princess Jinjue. They are such a cute couple, and I think that Prince Jing is letting his guard down around his cousin more and more. Also, Li Yu and the princess bonding over their shared experience of becoming parents, and immediately wanting to have more kids, lol (Li Yu wanting to have baby girl this time and the princess baby boy). That glance they shared of knowing perfectly well, what they would do with their husbands tonight 😏😏

Plot-wise nothing much has happened but since there's one more volume to go, of course everything can't be resolved yet. Li Yu still hasn't managed to finish all his missions by the system, so he's not fully human yet, but he got very intersting ability - transforming by only half into manmer or merman. You can guess we all prefer merman, haha, particularly prince Jing, who got to disover some special effects of this half form.

I have a feeling I'm repeating myself but I like it so much how they are together as a couple. Prince Jing, of course, adores and spoils Li Yu into the most pampered consort that ever lived 😄 However, through these three volumes, we've seen that Li Yu equally loves and takes care for Tianchi, and their scenes together are really the cutest to read 🥰

Li Yu spent so much time with him, and was so accustomed to it, that he would even sometimes forget Prince Jing was mute.
In the novel, it had just been a character trait. Suffering was a type of weakness, and the male protagonist couldn't have that.
But how could the real Prince Jing be emotionless? He was a living person, after all.
Li Yu ached for him. He pushed aside the paper with all the 'sorrys,' threw himself into Prince Jing's arms, and burst into sobs. "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. I should have realized sooner..."
Prince Jing hugged him hurriedly, the rims of his eyes red. He wrote in Li Yu's palm,
You're wonderful. With you here, I'm not in pain.

Looking forward to see what the last volume will bring. I expect lots and lots of cute & fluffy moments! 🥰🥰

He pulled Li Yu onto horse, holding the reins with one hand and hugging him tightly with the other. He covered Li Yu's lips with his own, not allowing for any resistence.
Li was instantly surronded by his hot, familiat breath. Startled, he tried to softly push him away - but it was no use. Instead, he passionately kissed him back.
When the kiss has ended, Prince Jing nuzzled his neck contentedly and put him down. Now, he seemed to be possessed by the god of war. Full of energy, he raised his riding crop in the air, galloping back to the competition.
Seriously.... did he think Li Yu was a battery pack or something?

This volume surprised me in the best way by leaning into the domestic arc, and I absolutely fell in love with the four babies introduced in this volume. Watching Li Yu and Prince Jing naturally become caring, attentive parental figures was both heartwarming and deeply satisfying. They’re not just good—they’re amazing parents, and it adds a whole new layer to their relationship. I 100% love the fish babies! I get why the Royal Father is so doting, haha!

Li Yu and Prince Jing are honestly so adorable, it’s so obvious how much love and care they have, not just in the way they treat each other, but also in how they raise their children together. On the other hand, you have the Sixth Prince, and his relationship with his pregnant wife is just... sad. Everything he does is just a pretense for the throne. There’s no real warmth or care there, and it really hurts to see how neglected she is—especially when you compare it to how deeply loved and cherished Li Yu is. You really have to be careful with the person you bare your soul into (marry). The contrast just makes you appreciate the main couple even more.

Amid the continuing court drama and emotional growth, the domestic moments brought such warmth, grounding the story in tenderness and quiet joy. It was so rewarding to see their love not just deepen, but expand to include others. Also, congratulations to their wedding!

The delightfully silly transmigration story has reached its third volume. Prince Jing has been ordered to the empire’s western border to show his mettle, and naturally Li Yu, his beloved pet fish, follows him there. It’s a quiet town pestered by bandits and locusts, and Li Yu has practical suggestions for solving both. The latter is handled by bringing ducks to the affected areas to eat the insects, which leads to establishing a restaurant too.

The main story is Prince Jing and Li Yu consummating their relationship (which I thought they’d done already), which leads to a surprise pregnancy. The fish scamming system, the programme guiding Li Yu’s transmigration journey, had asked for Li Yu’s consent, but did it during the act itself, when he wasn’t exactly paying attention and just agreed to anything it said. The possibility of pregnancy hadn’t even occurred to him, both of them being male.

Luckily, the system gives him a choice to handle the pregnancy as a fish. It still makes him a rather unique male fish, but at least the entire thing is easy for him. The only difficulty is hiding it from Prince Jing, because he still believes the prince doesn’t know the man in his bed and his favourite pet fish are the same. But when four fish eggs pop out, it’s difficult to keep secrets anymore.

Four lovely boy fishes emerge, but they need to wait for nine months before they turn into babies, a good stretch to fake Li Yu’s pregnancy. Despite some questions raised, most people take it in a stride. In the background, Prince Jing is trying to make the emperor to accept Li Yu as his consort instead of concubine. Once the babies are born, i.e. turn human, he finally gets the permission and the two get married. No one opposes and no one questions that the babies are theirs. There’s even blood test done by imperial physicians who confirm the children’s lineage.

Apart from one last test for Li Yu, during which he learns to transform into a merman, the rest of the story revolves around the babies. They’re rather unique, having spent nine months as fishes learning things a normal human baby has no idea of. They can communicate with each other and try to do so with others too, and learn to walk and talk and even sort of write before they’re even a year old. They’re cute, but not as cute as Li Yu as a fish, and there are no silly antics. Even outsiders notice this, when Prince Jing tries to show off a substitute fish as his favourite pet.

But the sixth prince hasn’t given up his ambition to be named as the crown prince. He’s stirring trouble on the background, and is ready to strike. The volume ends just as he makes his move. It’s a cliffhanger of sorts, but I would’ve read on even without it. The feel-good, low angst silliness of this series keeps me happy for days.

That being said, I only gave the volume four stars for slightly slower pace. Li Yu turned into a respectable adult who no longer had time for his fishy antics, and the children weren’t quite up to his level of cuteness yet. The next volume appears to be the final, so I’m hoping it’ll bring the old Li Yu back.

Sorry but this is absurd in a negative way and I really can't bring myself to keep reading anymore.
The first volume was really funny and the concept was interesting, but this is dragging on so much, the plot is boring and predictable with holes everywhere, the characters are flat and anonymous, everything gets always resolved easily and quickly and they never struggle for something. Nothing makes sense.
I'm not curious to know how it ends so that's a farewell, I rather spend my time reading other things.

I'm sure you've heard about a Merman... What about a Manmer? This is spoiler enough.

Of course the 3rd installment of this ever-funny series did not disappoint! The plot thickens and some unexpected fish make their appearance, changing the balance in favour of the protagonist and our oblivious transmigrator.

From light worries & doubts to enlarging a royal family and sharing a country, this has it all!

Will Li Yu be set-free by the restrictive Moe Pet System? Or will it scam him 'till the end? We shall see!

A fine kettle of fish indeed.

Li Yu and Prince Jing have finally settled down on the Western Border and along with it comes the chance for the the two of them to be together freely, for the most part. There is still that little tidbit involving Li Yu being stuck in his fish form for quite a while.

Thing escalate quickly with an assassination attempt almost as soon as they arrive and in the process of trying to save his boyfriend Li Yu turns into a fish right before said boyfriend's eyes. All is not lost however when Prince Jing revelas that he has know for quite some time. Things progress swimmingly after that as they begin to help the people on the border and set things to right.

Not long after their plans start Li Yu ends up with the system telling him that he can get pregnant! Decididng to take the leap her initiates a night between them to find out soon after that he is in fact pregnant. Prince Jing is utterly delighted when he finds out that he is going to be a father, not all they have to do is to convice everyone else that the kids are his and that a man can give birth.

Once the babies are born it takes them 9 months to turn human. From there they discover the joys of being human. It's like the book version of a sitcom. Through the ups and downs of familt life Li Yu and the Prince have to figure out a way to deal with the Sixth Prince when they are called back to the Capital. And boy are they going to blow things up in the Sixth Prince's face. But for that we'll just have to stick it out for the next volume.

I always have so much fun reading this series and I can't wait to read the finale! Maybe we'll even get to see the fish babies grow up a little. But until then I highly recommend that you pick this up if you need a laugh and it's perfect for fans of SVSSS! 10/10!

Honestly, I thought I'd get pretty bored once the couple got together and started living their wholesome domestic life, but there's still so much insanity and silliness and enough sweetness to make you physically ill, and I'm loving this. I don't know if I'll keep on enjoying the next book as much considering where we're at currently (where do we even have to go from here??), and it sucks that we don't get many missions at all or interactions with the System. BUT, I'm sure Li Yu will continue finding ways to entertain me, and the Baos will keep being absurdly cute.

Spoilers ahead!

Notes:
- The secret's out!!! Let's goooo! Honestly love how it happened. And Li Yu is just so happyyy <3<3<3
- LMAO "iron pole". I also can't believe Prince Jing called all of the physicians just because of his fishy being achy... HAH.
- Ok I did not imagine having little fish babies to be this funny. What the heck. And the "System" gets passed down genetically??? BAHAHAHA.
- Stopppp their little family is so cute?? Li Yu teaching the fish babies how to be good fishies?? Prince Jing being super chill with the fact that those fishes are his babies?? Bao #4 being a little slow but so damn cute?? They are all so adorable omfg.
- "duck army" I really can't with this book X'D
- Absolute wild stuff here. Prince Jing... Ah, idek.
- Some of these missions?? I mean, being a fish-human/human-fish for three days?? Like whaaa.
(Li Yu running around with a fish head is WILD.)
- Uncle Ye-shizi HAHAHAH. He's doing his best. I also love how Bao #4 is the friendliest and just like Li Yu, while Bao #1 is just like Prince Jing. And Prince Jing lowkey (highkey) favors the kid that looks like his husband XD XD XD
- Honestly, way too vague with all the intimate/sexual scenes.
- Li Yu despairingly calling them both "two stupid peas in a pod" is too funny. They're both so protective of their family and acted the same <3<3<3
- Stoppppp Prince Jing silently asking Li Yu to call him by name-- Tianchi. Also, being jealous of a dog??? Hahahaha. (I love my petty jealousy moments.)
- So, I accidentally saw a spoiler that said Prince Jing gets his voice back. I'm assuming the System will grant it through one of Li Yu's missions? Unless Li Yu discovers through the memories a cure to it. Either way, I hope it's kind of really dramatic and Li Yu really has to put some effort into the task, because I don't want it to be too easy and casual. And then Prince Jing will be so unbelievably grateful and more wildly in love with this magical husband of his.
- Random note, but I'm glad both dads are actually called "dad." I hate it when one is "mommy" or something, for stereotypical-gender-role reasons.
- Oh my god I cannot stop feeling bad for the babies who want to be fish. It sounds like torture, knowingly being stuck in an infant's body. They're always so upset...
- Li Yu and his babies all perking up at the smell of fish food XD XD XD Why was the warning glare he sent their way so funny?
- God, they are literally so damn cute. Loved the scene where Li Yu finds out about Prince Jing taking the medication secretly, and then they talk it out and it's so sad seeing Prince Jing admit to suffering from being mute, but they're so sweet. And then Li Yu has to go and end this wholesome, loving scene with a dirty joke LMAO
- Just love how the babies' original fishy appearances continue to be reflected in their outfits <3 Like I'm just obsessed with the concept of a carp demon turning human to be with a prince and having a bunch of fish babies that later become human too, and they're still quite strange humans. It just sounds like something from a myth.

September 2025 review (second time read):
We love horny protagonists in a PG-13 setting. Honestly I'm not even being sarcastic.
Also, the way I remember so little of this lmao. I am pleasantly surprised and entertained by everything. Although I did remember the merman/manmer shenanigans. Stuff like that sticks with a girl...

This has to be my favorite volume so far.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book 😁
But since it started getting boring toward the end, I just skimmed through the rest.

Honestly, I'm a bit annoyed with the writing. There’s way too much repetition of the same words 😒
IS THE AUTHOR OR TRANSLATOR NOT AWARE OF SYNONYMS!? 🙃

Either the translation is poor, or the author’s writing is the problem.

I also get the feeling that the author thinks their readers are dumb. So many minor details are repeated again and again — it really irks me. 🫣

4.75 / 5: No matter if he was human or a carp spirit, whether or not he could have children, whatever he gave birth to, Prince Jing always believed him.

He was Li Yu’s safe harbor.

this volume was just sooooooo….domestic, yet almost left me on the edge sometimes 😭😭 i will always say it—there’s nothing more compelling than finding a story that strikes the perfect balance between domesticity and action.

the more the story goes on, the more prince jing fights for the family he’s never had in the original story and it’s just so good. we see both him & li yu develop a lot as characters, especially with the addition of some new members in their family, who i adore :’)

on the one hand, i love all the chaos that comes with now having kids in the picture. on the other, there’s a chapter near the end of this volume that really struck a chord with me on how significant these new characters are to the story. they aren’t just there for the sake of adding some humor, but they really give a good reflection on how twisted family dynamics are in royal settings. what it would be like if siblings were raised without being in competition with each other is what we see with lu yi & prince jing’s little younglings. meanwhile, the “brotherhood” prince jing has with his blood siblings is nonexistent, and in fact just fractures more deeply when there’s only one brother who’s left to fight his way to the throne, even if it means resorting to deceit and underhanded moves.

yearning so bad to see more of these kids in the next (and final!!) volume, and also curious how that deceit will play out. all in all, very glad to finally have read this <3 it was a joy to read after a brief dry spell with this series.

This was a fun sequel. I loved the first part with the journey to the western border and the bandits and stuff. The fish kiddos were cute but tbh I’m not that keen on stories about little children and even so many of them. Sorry, but as someone with a family herself I found how this whole part was handled even more unrealistically than the other convenient plot points I don’t want to mention not to spoil the plot for others.

This story was light, cosy and funny but also not very engaging. I will continue to read the last book of The Disabled Tyrant’s Beloved Pet Fish and I’m sure it’ll be a lighthearted read too, but I’m not dying to know how this story ends. Honestly, so far I had the most fun with the first book.

"Prince Jing hugged him hurriedly, the rims of his eyes red. He wrote in Li Yu's palm, You're wonderful. With you here, I'm not in pain."

You know what, perhaps I'm the toxic one here. I like conflict in my stories and this series - esp this volume doesn't have much of that. They are safe, happy, and thriving. Their babies are well taken care of, chubby, and healthy. Love that for them, hate it for me😭

"This was just a declaration to the rest of the world: declaring that from now on, you are mine, and I'm yours."

Honestly this series is so not serious and chaotic, but in the best of ways and as long as you embrace the silliness of events its such a fun journey. I loved the change of scenery in this one and Li you finally being able to stay in human form more often, the build up was wonderful and I adore the setting of this tale.

Jing & Li Yu are wonderful together, it's truly sweet to see them fall in love more each moment and how they simply fit together. They support and balance one another, the communication between them is so subtle and soft how they understand each other and even the misunderstandings work with their different perspectives of events.

Yet when finally aspects start to be revealed and realisations it was lovely, they little details shine throughout and how they form their family made me smile. It was ridiculous and adorable, the confusion Li Yu has and his fears over Kings reaction. Hiding the eggs and the clumsy revelations, just so perfect.

When the kids are born and introduced i was surprised by how much I loved them, their personalities and different interests - the relationships with each other and their parents so sweet. The copying their fish dad, affection and rolling around - riding on fish back, swimming about and love of human food.

Also how they're able to communicate as fish and their upset when become human, no longer able to do what they did before the insight into their thoughts and side of events was so entertaining. The attempts to write words and Dabao especially trying to speak, the kids wanting to swim their sadness when it's not the same as humans. The way they play with each other, the kissing, feeding each other and mirroring their parents.

The use of Li Yu knowledge of the future/Home was great to see used more too, with the locusts and the ducks - the restaurants and pets. Also how Jing and Li Yu are able to pursue their romance and marry - the ceremony was sweet and the way the kids are simply accepted with no questions was hilarious.

I don't care how ridiculous this story is, it hits perfectly for the cosy and feel good feels. Also enjoy the slight mystery over the past and the politics of the princes is always fascinating, the various plots and planning going on in the background. The situation with the bandits, the action scenes and hunting along with the kids interaction with the emperor 'grandpa'.

The schemes and yet how they're foiled each time, by Li Yu prior information but also just how aware Jing is and how people have come to care for them with how they're treated better. How the kid aspect was handled was iffy, but I wasn't surprised considering the amount of crazy ideas this book has - it's definitely got some not great perspectives on some areas.

Anyway its still an entertaining read, but I definitely feel I should have took a break instead of trying to read all at once as have been in a bit of slump. As its a very easy going read, yet long and this one especially has a lot more time jumping around compared the first two I feel but it is such a fun read. I am excited to see the finale with the next book and how various aspects are resolved at last.
