Another great book by Kendall McKenna, but not my favorite of her works. While I really enjoyed the military aspects of the story, much like I did in her fantastic Strength of the Pack, which now lives on my fuck yeah, 5+ stars shelf as one of my favorite M/M romance books of all time, Brother In Arms relied too much on the military aspects of the story and gave us far too little of the wonderful interaction between MCs Kellan and Jonah. I had heard from other folks here at GoodReads that this was the case, so I actually waited to read this book until the sequel Fire For Effect came out, and I'm glad I did. But while Fire For Effect contained much more interaction between our heroes, the main focus was still the military storyline.
There is definitely a place in the world of fiction for a military suspense novel that includes two main characters that happen to be gay. I'm sure several have already been written and are readily available to the public. It just so happens that I would prefer not to read this kind of book with all the other books available to read. My preference is to read a M/M romance novel set within a military suspense theme backdrop. I got that with Strength of the Pack and loved every second of it. But I didn't feel it here or with the sequel. But, again, Kendall McKenna is a wonderful author and even if I am disappointed that these books weren't what I had hoped, I can still recommend them and be very glad that I read them. Riveting storyline, fascinating, fleshed out characters, incredibly hot sex scenes.

I really love hot military romances. This gave me that and one scorching hot sex scene. I loved this book and even with all the military talk and confusing shit I was so into this. I found I could learn a lot of the marine talk if I paid very close attention to it here. Possibly a problem for some, for me Nah.
Jonah was the MC here. In fact the love interest although mentioned did not pop up until later on in the story. Jonah was everything I wanted him to be. His character was really very sexy and he really popped out at me. So much so I built a nice picture in my head of him. I loved the way he was in love through the book without realising it.
Kellan took ages to actually appear and I was afraid when he did that I wouldn't like him. I was wrong, I loved him and his relationship with Jonah left me wanting more. Of the two characters he was probably the more friendly and affectionate. Most likely having to do with the fact is he's no longer an active marine.
The plot is heavy war and the romance kind of comes second in the beginning. We know of Jonah's desire to be with Kellan and it doesn't take long to figure out that is entirely mutual. I was surprised to read such a heavy military themed book that I enjoyed, but I really did and found that the romance was done to perfection.

Well, this one is the first of a series of 3, and I've been reliably informed that the last book blows the first two out of the water, so we'll stick with it. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Marine Staff Sergeant Jonah Carver is stationed in Iraq, and is given a secret mission by his 'Higher Ups'...it would appear that corruption involving firms on government contracts is rife in the USA, and IED's are finding their way into Iraq and being used against American troops, a fact that is confirmed when the guy sent over from the States to do a thorough investigation is killed. Jonah is to assist the investigation in any way he can, and it just so happens that his former Captain Kellan Reynolds (and lover...if one passionate night counts) turns up in Iraq, working on behalf of the government. Reynolds had predicted that whoever was sent over to Iraq would get killed, and is determined to find out what's going on.
Jonah and Kellan lost touch when Kellan left the Marines, and it would appear that both men have regretted it ever since. Hopefully, the next two books will spend more time on their relationship.

Given how much I like Kendall McKenna's Tameness of the Wolf series, I was expecting 'Brothers in Arms' to be an automatic win.
I felt no connection between Jonah and Kellan. We're told through a couple of flashbacks how much Jonah felt for Kellan, but I didn't really get it. The two apparently connected while they were serving in Iraq together during the initial invasion, but that's told almost in passing. I also didn't get Jonah constantly thinking about that one-night stand from years ago, especially since the two seemed to have lost touch because of life and general lack of interest.
Kellan isn't in the story until the halfway point, and when he finally shows up he's on a mission to rekindle his and Jonah's one night. It must have been some great sex to decide to hitch a ride to Iraq, in the middle of a war zone, for someone he had only one night with.
And the sex, the little there was, was very very bland. Which is a surprise, because this author writes some of the hottest MM sex scenes. Definitely not worth going all the way to Iraq for.
Plus, the thriller/mystery plot was odd. It was flimsy, and didn't really keep my attention.
I'm pretty sure I'll be skipping the continuation of Jonah and Kellan's story and going straight to book 3.

Apparently Kendall McKenna has a type and this is it. What you get is a detailed and I'm assuming realistic look at military life and some may find that boring. I say "cheers!" because apparently tough, stoic alphas in combat will suffice almost every time for me. I've said before too that this author has written some of the best smex I've read and I'll say it again. Though this is her earlier work, it still didn't disappoint. This is pretty much like her werewolf series without the paranormal elements - so if you liked that, this should be a no brainer. I only wish it was longer with more smex!

When the publisher’s blurb whispered those three magic words to me - “Marine Staff Sergeant” – I knew I was putty in Kendall McKenna’s hands…
Brothers in Arms is the first book in Kendall McKenna’s The Recon Diaries series. The book centres on the aforementioned Marine Staff Sergeant, Jonah Carver. As the second-in-command of an elite Force Recon unit currently deployed in Afghanistan, Jonah is the best of the best. So, when brand spanking new American weapons start showing up in the hands of local insurgents, it’s no surprise to anyone that Jonah and his team are tasked with protecting the VIPs brought in to investigate. However, things get mighty interesting when one of the civilian investigators assigned to the case turns out to be Carver’s former platoon commander Kellan Reynolds – a man Jonah had a blistering one night stand with several years ago.
Though she’s written nearly a dozen novels so far, this was the first book I’d read by Kendall McKenna. I wasn’t sure what to expect in the way of plot, characters, action, romance, etc., but thought the novel’s premise was interesting and original enough to give it a shot. Unfortunately, though the book had all the pieces necessary to rev my engine, the net result was a little underwhelming.
As far as main characters go, Jonah’s a pretty good one. He’s a warrior - a badass of the highest order. He’s strong and intelligent, a good leader and a loyal friend, and his ass looks daaaaamn good in a pair of BDUs. And thankfully, between a healthy fear of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy (still in place at the time this book was published) and some minor personal insecurities, Jonah’s just vulnerable enough to make him interesting without threatening his alpha-male status.
His love interest, however, was a little underdeveloped. As Jonah’s former commander, we inherently know that Kellan is both courageous and honourable. He’s a born leader, well respected by his superiors and his men, and totally comfortable in his own skin. So far, so delicious.
But as I said, McKenna’s storytelling techniques meant that Kellan was more of an idea than a tangible being until about 50 or 60% of the way through the book. In fact, the first half of the story focused almost entirely on establishing Jonah’s character; his thoughts, feelings, and memories were the only thing that mattered (in addition to establishing the mystery arc). Kellan was relegated to a mere memory and everything readers came to know about him was filtered through Jonah’s eyes and dimmed by the passage of time. Though I acknowledge that some readers may not be bothered by this, it left me feeling oddly disconnected from both characters.
The one positive thing I can say about this rather odd choice was that because we hadn’t been given an opportunity to see Jonah and Kellan interact in real-time yet, when it made the butterflies in my stomach do Olympic-level cartwheels.
If I'm being honest, I found that the novel didn’t have as much romance as I was hoping for (undoubtedly a by-product of the semi off-putting approach to telling the story). I mean, I want my longing glances and my hot monkey sex, dammit! Is that really too much to ask for?! That said, if the last few scenes of the book are any indication I’m certain that this will be rectified in the subsequent two novels. The same can be said about the action sequences. Though they were really well written - McKenna was able to give them an immediacy and chaos that you would expect in a real firefight with enemy combatants - they didn't come until the last 20 or 25% of the book. Hopefully McKenna ups the steam factor and the danger in Book 2 of the series.
Last thing… Overall, the dialogue in this book was good, but nothing special. However, there was one bit of dialogue that made me want to throw my Kindle across the room:
"Well, if you three aren't the sorriest fuckers," Jonah said as he stepped down off of the porch. "I'm here 'cause I'm still in the Corps. You ladies chose to come back." He took the sting from his words by grinning at his old friends and comrades.
I know this kind of smack talk is common amongst a lot of men (including the guys I know in the military), so the dialogue was probably perfectly in keeping with Jonah’s character. However, I can’t deny that those few simple words got every one of my feminist hackles rising. I don’t know how it’s still deemed acceptable in this day and age for people to equate my gender with the lesser, and to use the term “ladies” as an insult. If the author had used the term “gay” in a similarly derogatory manner, readers – myself included – would be up in arms about it (and rightly so!). And, fair or not, I found this passage even more offensive because the author is a woman; if we can’t rely on our own gender to stop perpetuating this kind of crap, how can we demand or expect men to do it?!
My advice to Ms. McKenna? Stick with the term “fuckers” or “assholes” (because at least they’re equal opportunity insults).
Verdict: A slow, slooooooow start, but good enough that I know I’ll read Fire for Effect (Recon Diaries #2).

I need to re-read this one for review. I remember enjoying it quite a bit.

Having just finished my re-read I remember why I enjoyed this book so much. I was a huge fan of the HBO special Generation Kill based on Recon Marines in Iraq. This book is so reminiscent of that...the dialogue, the flow of action, the descriptions. I loved it.
We have Marine Staff Sergeant, Jonah Carver and his former Platoon Commander, Kellan Reynolds. After Kellan decides to not re-up the men admit their attraction and share a scorching night together. Kellan stays in the US writes a book about his experiences and becomes a government consultant. Jonah heads back to Iraq and continues on with military life.
The men meet again a few years later when Kellan returns to Iraq as part of an investigative team under the protection of Jonah's squad.
This is pretty romance light but there's an underlying ust that just permeates this story. These two men are so attracted to each other but out in the field it is impossible for them to act on it, they do let it show in little ways but this is definitely more about the action and the investigation.
Really steeped in military life here. Lots of terminology and action as well as very fleshed out secondary characters that bring a lot to the story. This definitely has a satisfying conclusion and epilogue but I would love to see these guys in a few years. Would Kellan still be consulting? Would Jonah have retired from military life? What would he be doing now and where would the men be as a couple?
Great story with lots of action and wonderful chemsitry between two hot military men. Just as good as I remembered it!

This book was definitely not what I expected. The premise of the book is that one-time lovers Jonah and Kellan reunite in order to investigate American companies that are selling American-made military components to insurgents in Iraq. And this is pretty much all the book is about: the investigation. We hardly ever get any alone time with the MCs. The only steamy time we get is in a flashback and in the epilogue. So, this book cannot even really be classified as a gay romance. It really just features two gay characters. If books are going to have some kind of mystery/crime subplot, I would like them to spend at least equal amounts on the couple as the crime aspect of the novel, not 85% crime and 15% couple. This is just not what I am looking for in my gay romance novels. This was just meh for me. I might try the other two books, I might not. I've heard the third book just blows the first two out of the water, so we'll see...

I admit it...I love the military details and the specifics that show this author is either well-versed in Marine life or got some serious inspiration from movies or television shows like Generation Kill. I loved the plot, I loved the action, I loved the camaraderie & brotherhood.
What was missing? Not enough characterization, which also led to the romance feeling a bit lacking. I want to know more about each of these guys other than their dedication to the Corps & calling a halt to the needless killing referenced in the plot. (Although, #Points for not pulling any punches when it came to the civilian contractor companies with their less than professional handling of some duties, their No Bid contracts & corporate/legislative connections making them a shit-ton of money at the public's expense.)
I guess I just wanted more. I've read some of Kendall's other books and I know it's possible. I will read the next one to see if maybe I'll get my wish with that installment. DEFINITELY gonna read the 3rd one because with that length it seems more likely to be the complete picture for Yarwood's story.

I guess I just wanted more. I've read some of Kendall's other books and I know it's possible. I will read the next one to see if maybe I'll get my wish with that installment. DEFINITELY gonna read the 3rd one because with that length it seems more likely to be the complete picture for Yarwood's story.

This is a hard book to rate. I enjoyed the story for the military aspect of it but the romance is quite lacking, in my opinion.
I'm a sucker for a good military story and you don't find many out there that deals with the soldiers actually in the war and following their daily duties, at least I haven't. I thought this book did a pretty good job of embracing the fact these Marines are in Iraq and the jobs they are tasked to do there. I liked the descriptions and the mysteriousness of what Jonah has to go through being a Gunnery Sergeant.
I enjoyed Jonah because he's a bit stoic but he still has a somewhat black sense of humor. I loved the funny, playful insults between all the Marines. Their bickering and bantering gave me a few laughs especially because they all had history together and knew each others little quirks. We don't get much of Kellan but I liked how he's so bossy as an ex-Captain but pretty much pliant when it comes to sex.
The beginning was a bit confusing for me. I hate reading about memos. I also do not like flashback sex and this story has a pretty long and detailed scene of Jonah and Kellan's first and only night together. But beyond that, Kellan doesn't come into the story until more than halfway through. That, unfortunately, was my main problem with the story. Because there isn't a lot of romance or couple time, the ending feels too abrupt.
In all, I really enjoyed the story. I think what is lacked in romance is more than made up for in suspense and action because there is a ton of that which is why the story appealed to me so much. I just wished there had been more to the story to incorporate the lack of romance. But that's just me. Still recommended.

Am I missing something here? Is this book actually Generation Kill fan fiction and I just don't know about it? Because let me tell you, virtually every character is ripped straight from HBO's brilliant mini-series, which is in itself adapted from Evan Wright's and Nate Fick's phenomenal books. I kinda get the feeling the author was watching the show or reading the books (or some combination of the two) and went: "You know what this could use? Gay sex." And you know what? I have zero problem with that.

If you enjoy a good military story with hot marines, carrying out missions with a little mystery thrown in the excitement, and a side of mm hotness, this is your story.
This starts out a little slow as the groundwork is laid. I was starting to wonder how things were going to be tied together, but eventually everything does so very nicely. Not having any extensive experience with military speak, etc., I can only imagine that this is spot on.
Jonah is one smokin Marine. Kellan, who is Jonah's retired commander, is super hot as well. They are perfect together. There is not a lot of romance or sex in this story. There was enough action, mystery and story to fill any void I might have felt.
Having said that, I am really glad there is another book coming soon in this series. I am really looking forward to seeing how these guys make out together.

What a gem this turned out to be. I can not wait for the sequel; April can't get here soon enough. I need me some more Jonah and Kellen yumminess.
What I really loved is that there is an actual story here and the romance between Jonah and Kellen, though hot as hell, is almost secondary. Just enough to keep it on the edge. Their relationship in a combat zone was very realistic...no sneaking off to have to sex, cause really, no showers for days and weeks at a time...stinky, and where are you going to sneak off to anyway? So yeah, that realism is a huge turn on for me.
But when they do get together...the heat-o-meter was blown apart. These men are take-no-prisons in love and war. Sizzle.
So, this story was really just the intro to how Jonah and Kellen know each other and begin their relationship...the sequel should be giving us the rest of the story. I so can not wait!!

It took me a while to get into this story and I couldn't really put my finger on why. The main character was interesting and the setting was well developed. I was just waiting for the other shoe - namely the m/m aspect - to drop and couldn't quite figure out where the love interest was.
It wasn't until a flashback scene described the Jonah's first time with Kellan that I put the pieces of the puzzle together. This has either been straight-up Generation Kill fanfic in another life or the author was at least deep enough in that fandom to draw inspiration from it.
And this is by no means a bad thing! Because honestly one of the main problems I tend to have with fic vs. published is that I too often find the characters underdeveloped and undercooked. As soon as I realized that Jonah was 'Brad' and that Kellan was 'Nate' their whole backstory of UST unfolded before my inner mind's eye and I was totally invested in what was happening.
So when McKenna started introducing the rest of Bravo Company during the course of the story I was ready to go along and enjoyed myself a lot more. Unfortunately without my background in Generation Kill fandom and their often used tropes I would have enjoyed this story a lot less.

I think I would have liked this one more if there had been a little more romance and a little less military action/adventure. Jonah and Kellan weren't even on the same continent for a majority of the book. It was very well written and I did enjoy reading it. I'm looking forward to the next book, it sounds like things heat up between the two of them!

Brothers in Arms is an excellent read. I have to say it’s very dry, as in The Hurt Locker, Jarhead and Generation Kill kind of dry. So I guess I'm saying if you're looking for fluffy romance you won't get it here. Not a full-on review, more my thoughts and feelings on the book.
**SLIGHTLY SPOILERISH**
This book is set in Iraq, so it is a military based book, but there is also a primary investigative element to the book - looking for possible collusion between arms companies,the government, and selling to the enemy. It's also about the unique connection between men serving in a unit, and Jonah and Kellan, two men who served together previously and had a close company connection, as well as a sexual connection. I don’t usually like flashback sex but it was pretty darn hot here; given the lack of availability to have sex in a war zone, it worked well to help form an understanding of these mens' personal feelings.
There is a stripped down romantic component to this book. By stripped down I mean it's there, but it's subtle, more realistic and I like how appropriate that was. This book is a short yet good look-see at military personnel on the ground, serving in another difficult war; with the added pressure of the two protagonists being gay amidst the time of DADT. Certainly with Jonah staying in the service DADT was a catalyst for them growing apart, along with distance, and the difficult nature of their respective jobs. However, time and circumstance throw the two men back together.
I really appreciated the fact that this book is technically very sound, and I’m not just referring to the military speak, the writing was tight – the dialogue economical, there was little sentimentality, these are military types after all - and the editing good. The military jargon was interesting and certainly didn’t overwhelm the storyline. I like to be made to think, to go back and mull something over, I found this book did that to me.
Kendall McKenna has written a very good (first?) book, that I hope may be expanded upon; lord knows there were a cast of many in this book that could be utilised well in a, I don't know, Brothers in Arms series. BIG hint. I hope we do get to see more of the characters again, and I could sure handle some more of Jonah and Kellan.
If you like realisitic military settings, investigative work, plus second chance themes to your books, with emphasis on M/M, then here it is wating for you in Brothers in Arms.

BROTHERS IN ARMS is a very good military MM romantic suspense. I enjoyed this romance of two mature men and the military investigation that reunites them.
Jonah and Kellan shared one night together before their military careers separated them. Now an investigation in Iraq reunites them, if only they can live long enough.
I liked this book a lot. Unlike a lot of MM romance, this story isn't erotica with no story. Yes, Jonah and Kellan have an intensely erotic romance but most of the book takes place outside of their bedroom and to me this made their erotic interludes even sexier. I also liked that Jonah and Kellan were both mature men with lives and experiences before and after they met.
This book has an interesting plot with the investigation which combines the military and the FBI. The mystery was written well and kept my attention. I'm not familiar with the military so this world with all the acronyms and chain of command seemed exotic to me but still accessible as the author explained everything so someone unfamiliar like me can understand.
I do admit though, that within the framework of the military and the mystery which turns into a kidnapping, Kellan and Jonah don't have the time to emotionally bond, or at least not where readers are privy to it. I missed the emotional intimacy because the sexy romance was just on the cusp of this when the book ended. It's my hope that the author will continue Kellan and Jonah's romance in forthcoming book.
I recommend MM readers try BROTHERS IN ARMS for its strong storytelling and sexy romance with likable, mature characters.

Absolutely loved this book! The whole thing - story, writing, plot, characters, dialogue, love story, sex scenes, and action scenes. Everything about it was phenomenal.
Gunnery Sergeant Jonah Carver. The rank and name alone gave me shivers. He is the epitome of a Force Recon Marine - tough, loyal, strong, determined, dominant, and oh so sexy hot! (Former) Captain Kellan Reynolds. Wow. Hard man to describe, no pun intended. Smart, charismatic, loyal, sexy, and very determined. Determined not to let Jonah get away a second time.
These two men served together during the initial taking of Baghdad in '03. After their return Kellan chose not re-up, they had one blisteringly hot night of sex and then Jonah was deployed unexpectedly two days later. Now they're meeting again in Iraq. Kellan is consulting for the US government, he's with a team from the FBI and they're looking to investigate and find proof of Defense contractors providing weapons and technology to Iraqi terrorists/insurgents.
So our guys are back together in the hot, sweaty, and oh so dangerous world of Iraq. There's guns, battles, IED's, weapons caches, assassinations, kidnappings, torture, and rescues. What more can you ask for from a great book? I'm not telling the ending so don't bother asking. Just trust me that it's good and leaves room for the next book in the series.

Gigi pretty much took the words out of the tips of my fingertips.
While Strength of the Pack and it's sequel Strength of the Wolf by Kendall McK is one of my favorite books EVER! I will admit I felt a little disappointed after reading this. Don't get me wrong, this is a superbly written story, it's action filled and with a very interesting plot, you never feel left out of the military element since everything is very well explained and shown in a way to make it interesting for someone that doesn't know anything about it.
So, why did I feel disappointed? I felt no connection whatsoever to the MC's. Jonah Carver is a Marine Staff Sergeant, he is a giant of a hot man, sexy and commanding, but what else do I know about him? Absolutely nothing, also, his relationship with Kellan Reynolds is not explained at all, the interaction is minimal and the sex wasn't even mentionable. I wish we could have seen actual interaction between them but that didn't happen and this was just too focused on the military element.
But it was a very interesting read, but this is no MM romance, the MC's just happen to be gay.

This was a solid short novel about two men, one, Jonah, a career RECON Marine, and the other, Kendall, retired from the Marines. The book is set in the era of DADT. The author accomplishes the difficult task of showing Marines in action well. The jargon sounds authentic, but is explained well enough and unobtrusively enough to be clear. The action is suspenseful and violent, as befits combat, but not bloody. (There is some of the "he turned and snapped off a shot and the figure on the balcony fell" kind of action - entirely appropriate, but if you don't like a bunch of faceless people being killed then it won't be for you.)
Because of the constraints of DADT, you get to see the two men having very hot and well written sex, and together in military action, but very little of conversation or tenderness or relationship-building. Serving together before the book opens has built the bond between these two man, and it is believable and solid, but does not happen on the page. The emotional side in general is a little subdued.
I'd love to see this author write another story, perhaps about Yarwood, post DADT, where the contact between the MC's was not as constrained. With a few glimpses, she has made me quite interested in that young man.

I really enjoyed learning about Jonah and the day to day of his life in Iraq, then the action picked up and I was right there with it and feeling the adrenaline. The way that Kellan was worked into the story brought him to life and when we finally meet him, his actions are in align with the image that Jonah gave to us. This is a solid first book from this author and I look forward to more.

This wasn't badly written, but it wasn't really the story for me. It had too much focus on the military stuff and not enough focus on the relationship stuff for my taste. I prefer at least equal time be given to the relationship in a romance novel, as to any other plot going on, and in this one, I felt the romance barely got any page time, and I didn't really get to connect to either of the MCs. Now if what you want is the combat/recon side of things, this book might be just what you're hunting for. I don't know enough to speak to accuracy or anything like that.

Jonah is feeling kind of old, since a lot of the men in his platoon, and in the battalion, regard him with awe since he has seen so much action. When his special "babysitting" project goes horribly wrong, Jonah and his team are requested for another mission, babysitting again. This time around, though, there are a lot of familiar old faces in his team and in the group that he has to look after.
There was very little time with Jonah and Kellen, and just a smidge in the past. However, the story was compelling and filled with adrenaline. Also, the author seems to have become more fond of commas as her writing career progressed, which is not a good thing.
Jonah is a lifer, and while he is getting tired of what his duties have become, he still enjoys his job and the camaraderie with his fellow marines. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

I’ll go ahead and say that it is one of the best and add that to her complete list of works, because I’ve read and love them all. This is not the first time I’ve read this book – I’ve lost count – and it certainly won’t be the last.
This book is action packed in many different ways. McKenna submerses readers in the world of the USMC (United States Marine Corps, for those of you that don’t know). I’ve long said that this author writes like she has experienced the intensity of being deployed overseas. So much so that the background and behind the scenes feel so very real. The adventure of this secret world of stealth and survival captivated me from word one. It’s a thrilling adventurous rollercoaster ride.
I’m not sure I have the words to tell you how much I love Jonah and Kellan. So first I’ll tell you how much I love alpha males. And Lord help me, I go all southern belle swoony when there are two alpha males in the picture, much less in a love scene. So consider me your southern belle for the moment. Jonah and Kellan are strong, confident, beautiful men devoted to protecting their country, their team, and each other. They focus intently on the job at hand while watching out for one another and the possibility of love. Individually they are incredible. Together they are swoon-worthy.
Until Kendall McKenna, I was not a fan of military books – the structure, the rules, the secret keeping. I didn’t think I’d be a fan. In all honesty, I hadn’t read much that involved military because I wasn’t sure I’d like it. This author blew my misconceptions out of the water. I was lucky to happen upon this book when I did. McKenna was still a relatively new author at the time and since I’ve followed her journey and her men with bated breath. I crave the next book each time.
If you have not picked up the Recon Diaries series, I suggest you do so. Start with this book and make your way through the entire series. I also suggest you pick up her other books. You won’t be disappointed.

Jonah Carver is a Marine Staff Sergeant and veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan. Kellan Reynolds is his former Platoon Commander who now serves as a civilian consultant for the U.S. government. Jonah and Kellan shared one hot, smexy night but then lost touch. When their paths cross again, they team up to uncover government corruption responsible for the murder of U.S. troops and the assassination of a VIP under Jonah's protection. When the bad guys kidnap Kellan to stop the investigation, Jonah must rescue him before it's too late.
This one was meh. It was heavy on the military strategy and lingo. There was a lot of oscar-mikes and mike this or mike that ... it got distracting as all get out. And while I enjoy suspense, the mystery here was told not shown. We were simply told about the conspiracy and corruption; no plot development or subtle revelations. It was simply spelled out for us: these are the bad guys and this is why they're doing it. Period. Ugh.
Lastly, the chemistry between Jonah and Kellan. There was none. I didn't feel it with them. Again, we are simply told that they are attracted to each other and care for one another. I liked them each individually well enough, but as a couple? I just didn't feel the vibe.
On a more positive note, I understand that this was the author's first novel. Despite its shortcomings, I believe that this book was impressive for a debut.
Bottom-line: meh but this author shows promise.

An interesting read, in that whilst its in the m/m genre, its more a story about comradeship in the theatre of war. I enjoyed it, it wasn't quite what I was expecting, and if you are looking for an in depth romance, lots of together tme then this book wont give you that. What it gave me was a feeling of being in that hot, stinky base in Iraq, squashed in with lots of men, no privacy, always on edge. Even Jonah and Kellan's first time together is done in recall by Jonah and he is not expeting to see Kellan again, let alone in Iraq. There are on patrol scenes, deaths from IED, attacks by RPG, kidnapping and rescue but dont be put off if war isn't your thing - its done from the feelings of those involved rather than a string of bloody tales. The book kept me reading and it was an easy to read in one sitting story. Initially I thought I needed to know more about Jonah and Kellan once they were back stateside but having had a few hours since finishing the book, I like the hopeful happy ending.

This book is difficult to review. I loved it but I can't pick out why... I loved all the army-speak but also found it a little confusing. I loved the main characters but then you only saw one of them for much of the book. I loved the action, but then the action in the conclusion was a little confusing as to how a particular character acted and also the thingy must have been going slow (see I can be cryptic!).
I recommend this for fans of soldiers, danger, excitement and a brilliantly written and very raw look at a fighting man. Wish the romance had built more, wish there was more of the two guys together (I don't mean sexually I just mean *together*) - would be very pleased to see some kind of sequel if at all possible Ms McKenna. Loved the action.

Lots of military information, which can be very interesting especially if, like me, you enjoy military stories. However, in this instance I felt that it was a little too much information and at times it caused the story to drag a little for me. Unfortunately, the romance seemed to get lost in the military information. The characters were likeable and the military skirmishes were action-packed.
