I absolutely loved this book!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT.
*CONTAINS SPOILERS*
For one, Taylor's name was so awesome because he was a dude and that's very unusual in books.
Second, Taylor was only twenty-five! That's a blessing in itself because most of these types of stories have the male character— who is the CEO of a big company— around age thirty-three to thirty-eight, and the female character in her early twenties. I'm not a big fan when that happens.
Three, Taylor was just an all around great character. He was dominant yet gentle and he absolutely doted on Abby.
Richard made for an interesting conflict, and he added great suspense to the story.
Nicola was such a cutie, I wish we could have learned a little more about her.
I could tell the minute we were introduced to Nonna that she was going to die. I could just feel it. But her death was what really got the ball rolling and I adored whatever information we learned about her.
I was a little confused over Abby's parents. She mentions in the beginning that they're absent and not very caring. She does say that they aren't not caring in the sense of being abusive or malicious, but just rude and uncaring. But Abby's father seemed fine to me. And her mother was alright during the parts where she wasn't raving about carbs and blaming Abby for Nonna's death. Her father seemed to be there for her and called her sweetie and whatnot. So a bit fuzzy on that subject.
I found I had secondhand embarrassment for Abby when she would call her friend Michelle "hon". Maybe it's just me (I am a naturally awkward person), but I couldn't see Abby calling a newly-made friend "hon". It seems like such a granny term. I got a little red-cheeked when she did so.
I fell in love with the scene where Taylor takes Abby to his grandmother's house. Taylor's parents made for great conflict, too. I really got the picture of what Taylor always said about his parents seeing Richard as their golden boy. His parents were a vital part in the dark parts of this story.
Taylor's grandmother was also greatly appreciated, because she could definitely fill the void of Nonna. She was so sweet.
I was addicted to this story. It was quite realistic. I think I'm in love with Taylor myself. I wish we could have saw more affection between the two. But I did love the little glimpses we got of them being sweet together. Like Taylor curling his body around Abby, rubbing her back, hugging her.
I loved near the end when Abby is in the hospital. I just found that her suicide attempt really added a raw edge to the story. It makes it grainy and real. You could really see how desperate she was in thinking everyones' lives would be better without her (even though I soooo don't agree). I liked seeing Taylor vulnerable and get told off by Abby and scolded by his grandmother. I especially loved when Abby talks about waking up curled around Taylor's head laying on her hospital bed, with their fingers intertwined. I thought that was real sweet.
I figured she would get pregnant, because this is a story that is going to face plenty of conflicts in the characters' lives, and what better way to create struggles than an accidental pregnancy. Though I do feel like punching Taylor in the throat for walking out on Abby at the end and not calling her back. Especially after he said he couldn't lose her, and he wouldn't leave her. AND he should know that he has to be there for her, because, um, she just tried to off herself. What a cry for help that was.
One of the things that bothered me was the non-usage of contractions in the characters' spoken sentences. Nobody really says "I do not like that" anymore, it's now "I don't like that". Just a minor thing, but I found I felt like they were robots sometimes. No big deal.
Overall, this book totally had me shaking in my boots while reading it because I was so into it. I loved the plot, and the main characters, and the setting. I'm hoping I can read the second one otherwise I might cry.
