Dylan Dog Ristampa n. 25: Morgana

Was ist Realität, was Traum in dieser Episode?

"It is quite simple. He proves by algebra that Hamlet’s grandson is Shakespeare’s grandfather and that he himself is the ghost of his own father."

A 100% meta dark and romantic story, as Sclavi writes so well.
Little treat of q comic book within a comic book, with Angelo Stano himself as the illustrator of said comic book! (With an obvious tribute to Reed Crandall, by the way).

Sclavi at his best, Stano on art—for me, it's all good. Given the direct connection, I highly, highly recommend reading Dylan Dog #1 though.

This was my first taste of the “Dylan Dog” series. It’s an early instalment, the 25th volume, originally published in 1988, when the comics were still scripted by series creator Tiziano Sclavi. It’s also one of the few volumes drawn by Angelo Stano, who notably drew the very first volume and was the series’s main cover artist for 25 years. As such, it seemed like a good place to start.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. The series has a similar premise to “Hellblazer” (or, to a lesser extent, “Hellboy”), following a London-based occult detective who fights supernatural threats. Each volume is a complete, largely self-contained story, and this one employs a kind of psychological horror that appeals to me a lot, based around people stuck in a dreamlike haze, unable to tell what’s real or not. I find insanity scarier than probably anything else, so I find its use in horror very effective, and the execution here is trippy and mind-bending in a thoroughly compelling way. I did find the volume’s ending a bit underwhelming, as it centres around expository revelations about the protagonist’s backstory, and I also didn't get much from the comic relief peppered throughout the volume, but neither of those things detracted too much from my enjoyment. I certainly liked this more than any of the “Hellblazer” I've read.

At the end of the day, this is solid, entertaining pulp – and with very nice black-and-white artwork to boot. I’m not inspired to go out and collect the whole series, but if I were able to get volumes for €5 each from newsstands and grocery shops – as is the case in Italy – I'm sure I'd do so on occasion, to read during a flight or a train journey, for example.

Albo bellissimo!

Morgana is a weird story, a dreamy one for sure, and one that tries repeatedly to break the fourth wall in a very unique way. A girl, said Morgana, travels to London, while Dylan Dog is invited to spiritual sitting by Miss Trelkovski. During this spiritual sitting, a guy named Reed, who writes and creates a version of the Dylan Dog comics in one of the universes we see during this issue, is the medium and the person who not only has seen Morgana, but he also seems to experience parallel universes. While Morgana experiences a London of a possible future in which the zombies have won, Dylan attends the session and sees a crazed Reed become a zombie after a nightmare in the possible future. Confused and lovesick, Dylan drives home and almost hits Morgana with his car, after she devoured the escaped Reed. Morgana then travels with Dylan to Inverness and to Undead, where he meets again with Xabaras and finds out that Morgana was one of his zombies. And, on top of that, Dylan's love from three hundred years ago. Dylan fails to believe him and cuts his head off with a sword. Then Morgana appears and the still talking Xabaras reveals that the body Dylan saw was but a fading illusion. Startled and confused, Dylan does not know what to do, when Morgana cuts Dylan's wrist and with his blood gives Xabaras a new body. She is then hit by a knife through the heart and, even if not dead, feels sleepy and wants to rest. Xabaras calls Dylan his son, and while going away warns Dylan not to cross his path again. A confused Dylan kisses and cries Morgana to sleep, while a somehow alive Reed draws the last page of a comic book that looks like the alternate future in which zombies have won.

A very weird story, honestly, but not a bad one, just one that is hard to follow. What does it mean? Who is Morgana, also called Morgana Le Fey by Xabaras? What does it mean, she is a girl from 300 years ago that Dylan loved? So many questions, of which Reed seems to be proud of, that somehow seem to go nowhere. Is this story even real? Did it even happen or was it just a dream by Morgana?
I guess only future issues will be able to tell...

Vrhunski napisana, odličan crtež Sclavia i pojava Xabarasa.
