the plot introduced in volume one has been completed, and now we're introduced to another - i'm interested to see how the next and final two volumes wrap things up

I'm loving this little series! Can't wait to read the next one 😊

As before, I absolutely adore Nico 😼 He's the best! Lydia is so sweet, kind and often naive lol. But she just seems to the this little group of misfits together. Raven is coming around to liking her, and Ermine tries to protect her. Poor Ermine though 😭

Anyway, this was a nice conclusion to Lydia's first big adventure as a faerie doctor. Can't wait to see what Edgar has in store for them next. I love how easily Nico is won over just by spiffy new clothes 😁 He's so vain 😂

This was a good second volume. The story move along nicely and the characters developed some as well. I really liked how the story progressed in this volume. It was very interesting to see how everyone interacted and I loved the whole section that took place on the island with the merrow. Highly recommend, especially if you liked volume one!

And so ends the first arc.

I was quite surprised at a lot of the (minor) plot twists. I liked not being able to anticipate everything.

The characters still have some changes to go through, if I’m reading them correctly. It should be good and I’m looking forward to that. Each of the characters are deeper than I expected for a four volume series. It’s nice to see executed this well.

Some pretty intense things happened in this volume. The way the author approached the subjects differed than other mangas. Sometimes it was tasteful while other times it wasn’t the greatest.

SO VERY GOOD!

Wow! I have never read a manga like this! It's like fantasy novels I use to read meets manga and I am here for it!

They mystery and riddle solving was so much fun! Throw in the danger of Huxley and then Edgar and his companions (because he definitely seems just as dangerous in his own way…) and it left me bummed every time I had to put this book down to do "real life" things! I wanted to keep reading!!

Lydia is one courageous heroine! While I feel she may have some common shojo heroine traits, I really liked her determination to be in control of the situation as best as she could without being under Edgar's thumb. This is *especially* true when things are revealed later on…

The art was absolutely gorgeous and could not get enough of the folklore that was mentioned and seeing it drawn on page! Absolutely wonderful!

I am giving this volume five stars, but there is one scene where I truly wanted to bump it down to four stars because NOOOOOOOOOO! Everything involving that one incident was SUCH a plot twist followed by another and another and was just so shocked but also really sad! Well done to the light novelist and to the mangaka!

Overall, I continue to deeply enjoy this series! It has been an unexpected gem and can't wait to read the third volume, especially with that ending! LOL!

Definitely highly recommend this series so far!

This was another fun book in this series. This is a cute story that is an easy and fun read. I enjoyed it. There are four volumes in The Earl and the Fairy series.

Edgar and Lydia continue on their quest to find the magical sword of the Blue Knight Earl. Lydia still doesn’t trust Edgar but the mystery behind the sword, and the merfolk who protect the island it’s supposed to be on, is too much for her to resist.

The illustration is pretty run of the mill, not bad but not spectacular either. It’s easy to follow and easy to tell who is who.

I haven’t read much shoujo but I am really enjoying this book and might pick up more in the future.

Overall I am really enjoying this series. It’s a fun and easy read with an interesting story and witty dialogue. I definitely plan on continuing the series. I would recommend to those who enjoy light historical fantasy manga.

Volume two continues Edgar and Lydia's quest for the treasured sword battling robbers and traitors. There's a vague sense of tragedy in this volume, though the ending carries on very well.

Edgar turns out to be a good guy after all. No, wait. That's not entirely true. He has the makings of an excellent villain. If it weren't for that darned sense of noblesse oblige (and I mean that in the best sense of the phrase), he'd have already gone to the dark side. In this volume we find out just how devoted Edgar can be to those who love him, platonic or otherwise. It's frightening. Though I don't approve the means, I have to admire the motivation.

Like most bad-boy romances, Lydia is put into the role of his savior. What makes this story good is that she's just as strong in her convictions as Edgar is in his sense of responsibility. As Edgar puts it at one point, "I can never quite get her under my thumb." And he likes it that way. The relationship they begin to casually form is based on hope and joy (as compared to his bond with Ermine which is based on shared pain and suffering).

Ermine, instead of becoming the hated Other Woman Obstacle, becomes a very sympathetic character in this volume, one who puts Edgar's welfare above her own. It lifts this love triangle above the usual petty nonsense into the realms of sincere tragedy.

There's a couple of twists I didn't see coming in this volume, one of which completely took me by surprise. The resolution to the merrow's riddle made sense and though I expected the general end, I didn't expect the way things turned out. Not everyone gets what they want by the end of this volume. However, it was a good, hopeful end to the arc. I'm looking forward to volume three.

Things got really interesting in this volume! It was more action and magic and the characters were more fleshed out the further the story goes. I like the direction this volume took even if a few things weren’t really explained or wrapped up as neatly as I would have liked (for example I’m still not entirely sure what happened to the villains… 🤷🏼‍♀️).

Edgar really grew on me in this one and even though I still don’t like his methods for and of doing things I understand more WHY he chooses to do what and how he does those things. Lydia isn’t a warrior but is strong in her compassion and willingness to go along with Edgar even if she’s unsure or suspicious of what his plans are. Raven really became more alive for me as well as did Ermine. And the twist involving her… 😱😮 I SO didn’t see that coming and it really shocked me. Not to mention how the characters reacted afterwards…so sad. Just to warn you, lol. And Nico is the bestest friend Lydia could have even if his advice isn’t the best or annoys me at times, haha.

The magic and lore of as really interesting and I liked how it was more prominent then in the first volume. The art is gorgeous as always though this cover isn’t my favorite. Interested to see where they go from here.

Content: magic and magical creatures; veiled hints a girl was sexually used in the past; a kiss; violence and blood (nothing over PG-13); guns and a sword are held on people; a character commits suicide (fall and death are off screen)

2.5 stars? I liked it more than the first volume, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing on with the series (famous last words, I know). It’s an interest plot, but I don’t really care for either main lead.

Content:
All about fairies and such (mermaids/sirens, silkies, pookas, spirits, etc); Mentions of a curse; a mention of going through hell; 1 what the…, 1 what the hell; He tried to throw Nico the fairy-cat into a fireplace (he says he was kidding but pretty sure he was not); A character jumps off ledge & commits suicide (shown and her close friends just wanted her to be happy); Guns are used to threaten others; Some drinking; Mentions of killers, killing, murders, & deaths (not overall graphic); Mentions of mermaids/sirens luring people to their death and the corpses being washed on shore; a mention of a cross tattoo; a mention of a “spunkie” which is the soul of a child who died and wasn’t baptized; a mention of a priest baptizing children;
A couple kisses; a couple mentions of a man using a woman (implied sexually) & her being his toy.

Pretty cover. So, with this one um, intense is what it was. And yet its quite the page turner. Art was well done here. Story continues where the first one left off of course.

Really liked this second installment of the series. It felt a bit deeper here, we got some more background on the hero. I liked the way everything flowed together, though I was left with a few questions unanswered here. Content warning

Whoa! I was totally not expecting the whole "quest for the sword" plotline to resolve so quickly. I thought they were going to be following those clues for volumes to come.

Cons: not enough Ermine, some kinda weak reasoning.

Pros: Nico plotting with gnomes, Lydia showing more backbone.

There is a lack of cohesion between plot points which makes the overall flow choppy and hard to follow. Characters try to develop, but the plot elements become far too distracting, though, that part makes it feel a bit more like real life. In a high stakes situation, sometimes you don’t get to properly know someone in spite of how hard you may try. That being said, however, some of the things characters say or choose to do seem out of pocket and make me think “where did that even come from?” to the point that it feels like two characters might be having two different conversations together. It just felt really odd to me. But besides that, this manga is quaint and I really liked this volume. Volumes 1 and 2 feel like an entire story from start to finish, wrapped up with a bow. The last chapter in this volume felt as though it was written without expectations for a continuation, but with hope for one. The story itself ended up being really entertaining and I became truly invested in it. I had some expectations of my own in terms of how the story might play out, but it seemed as though I had been mistaken. I had thought Lydia might turn out to be a descendant of the Blue Earl, and Edgar would want to marry her in order to gain the title himself. But it seems as though his bloodline must have truly ended, and the merrows have escaped that and chose to re-interpret their promise as seemed fit. Since it had been 300 years since they had made said promise, they were eager to be able to move on, if only someone could prove themselves worthy. Through Lydia’s help and wit, she was able to give Edgar all the power he needed to gain the Star Sapphire (or something closest to it), becoming the thief who took a lost Earldom.
There’s numerous elements to the story that only make sense when I rewrite them in my mind, rather than reading them outright. I truly enjoy the Earl and the Fairy, but I simply can’t give it above a 3.5 for the sheer fact that the way it is written and developed makes my brows furrowed.

Lydia travels with Edgar to his holdings near Ireland in order to find the sword and Merrow Star he's been seeking. However, Lydia still doesn't know if she can trust Edgar and now, via Huxley, her father is also in danger.

It's been ages since I last saw it, but I think the events of this volume are where the anime ended.

Meh, this was okay. Nothing about this particular volume really stood out to me. I did kind of like Nico - grumpy, put-upon, and trying to keep Lydia alive.

Beautiful artwork. The story's pretty good (and the mysteries are building up!), and other than the fact that I really DO want to slap The Earl a bit xD, the characters are interesting as well. Still getting used to the manga format, but the artwork itself is worth a re-read!

I can't wait to get my backordered copies of Vols. 3 & 4 (finale) from RightStuf now! :D

Molto BENE!

In this volume, Lydia continues in her journey helping Edgar. They go through sea and land that could be dangerous for them if they aren't careful with the "merrow" people. Many things come to light as they travel regarding Edgar's intentions and the characters see that there can be grave consequences when dealing with Huxley. Eventually, Lydia uses her abilities as a fairy doctor to help Edgar and they end up being able to convert Edgar into the new Knight Blue Earl descendant.

Three out of five stars. I still am not entirely sure if I will keep reading the rest of this series. It is definitely getting better and obviously it is the second volume, so I need to read more of it to let the story develop. I really like that there was more of the fairy realm incorporated into this volume compared to the first one. Definitely recommend if you're into fantasy/fiction.

This was absolutely amazing! The story just went from being good in the first volume, to impossible to put down for a minute in this volume! Things start getting intense, and secrets and intentions start being revealed, and its just incredibly suspenseful and thrilling to read. The art just makes it even better. I can't wait to get my hands on the next volume!

This was really good. I was surprised by how much I liked this, even as the story continued to unfold with the dark overtones. Underwater cities, mermaids, magic swords; it was all such good stuff.

This review originally appeared on my blog, Books Without Any Pictures: http://bookswithoutanypictures.com/20...

The Earl and the Fairy is a short manga series about a fairy doctor who is helping a man travel to the fairy kingdom to reclaim his birthright. I read it in a tent this summer when our camping trip turned super rainy, and binge-reading a bunch of manga seemed like the best way to spend the day.

One of the things that I did like about The Earl and the Fairy is that it relatively short, and doesn’t feature huge cliffhangers. Volumes 1 and 2 form a complete story arc. While I enjoyed the series when I read it, it wasn’t particularly memorable. And while I’d originally planned on buying 3 and 4 shortly after reading the first two volumes, I don’t think I’m going to bother, unless I come across them in a cheap manga bin at a convention. There are plenty of other series that I’ve started and have more interest in continuing.
