August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue, a German dramatist and writer, also worked as a consul in Russia and Germany.
In 1817, people burned a book of Kotzebue during the Wartburg festival. Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant member of the Burschenschaften, murdered him. This murder gave Klemens von Metternich the pretext to issue the Carlsbad decrees of 1819, which dissolved the Burschenschaften, cracked down on the liberal press, and seriously restricted academic freedom in the states of the German confederation.
We have to read this book for German literature class and I have to be honest, I didn't really like it. The previous ones (Danton's Death, Emilia Galotti etc.) were a lot more teaching and entertaining and I simply couldn't find something interesting in this one. It surely was kind of funny at some parts but unfortunately, I expected a little more than that. All in all, it was okay but I wouldn't really recommend it to my friends.
