Born as Dorothy Violet Ellen Brown into a working-class family, her father taught her to read at an early age, enabling her to write her first story at four years of age. Her stories, poems and articles were published throughout her twenties, and at this time she married her husband Frank Edwards and had two children, Jane and Frank.
Edwards' most famous stories are of My Naughty Little Sister, which she conceived to keep her daughter, Jane, quiet whilst on a family holiday in 1950. She wrote five books of these stories.
She also published several anthologies of short stories, folklore and poetry for children, chiefly on the subjects of magic, witchcraft and ghosts. Two of these are Ghosts and Shadows 1980 and Mists and Magic 1983.
She was shortlisted for the Whitbread Award for children's literature for The Witches and the Grinnygog 1981, a novel for children about the survival of benign pagan witchcraft in modern Britain. This novel was later adapted for television.
Edwards was part of the 1950s radio show Listen with Mother, and she also wrote for Playschool and Jackanory.
Reminds me of being a child. We had a collection of these stories and I remember being fascinated with the naughty little girl and the things she got up to. I can remember my favourite as a child was the one where she and her friend Bad Harry snuck into the pantry and ate up all of the birthday trifle. Some of the stories were old fashioned even in the 90s when I read them, featured sweeps and coal men but even more so now - with milkmen (on a horse and trap!) and bakers who drop off goods at your house also becoming almost obsolete. There was a story where the naughty little sister was frightened of a vacuum cleaner as she'd never seen one before. I read the one with Santa Claus to my daughter in the bath and she enjoyed it so I think in a few years time when she really enjoys stories without the pictures she might enjoy this. Even though the stories are outdated, it will open up some good discussion about how things have changed in the 60-70 years since the stories were published.
amazing amazing amazing. as someone with naughty little siblings this was very good. the bit where she sneaks into the larder and eats the sweets off the trifle is great stuff. made a big impression. lovely touch that she is the naughty sister and her friend is called Bad Harry lol
These books I find are great re-readers and are spectacular stories
I find my fav book was my naughty little sister’s freinds like the one where she had the measles and dear mrs cocoa let have a shot of the get-better box 🗃️ and from what I heard it does sound a treat!
The original My naughty little sister was just as good filled with great stories I enjoyed reading about the bottle tree and the story “ when my father minded my little sister “ cracked me up as my dad is absolutely not anything like that🤣
She and Harry are DOUBLE TROUBLE real with all the mischief and tricks the do I’m surprised they haven’t… they haven’t… well I dunno anyway my favourite story about them is “crusts”the way nobody thought that my little sister would have copied Harry in the first place! Ha ha 🤣
Great stories for children!👍

For the first time ever I have either read all of these stories myself or to our 7 year old. And we both love them. 'My Naughty Little Sister ' was my favourite book when I was a child and I believe I did read a little about Bad Harry too. But a lot of the stories in this compilation are new to me. I didn't know there were 5 books! We are sad that there aren't any more stories to read now. :-( Anyone who hasn't come across these yet is in for a real treat.
Great collection of short stories surrounding the main character of a little girl that my daughter really enjoyed reading about. This collection of stories was bedtime story reading between my daughter and I for a good few weeks, she even has the yoto version so she can hear them over and over again. Definitely a book we will keep on our bookcase to reread again.
I used to enjoy having these stories read to me when I was little. I can see now why I don't remember reading them to myself; the style is very much geared towards younger children who probably can't read fluently yet, and have moved onto Milly Molly Mandy or something by the time they can. Initially I was a little disappointed to learn this, but I soon got used to the style, and it really is perfect for reading out loud (I can just hear my late grandmother telling a story the way Dorothy Edwards does).
The first few books I thought just about worthy of four stars, up to and including When My Naughty Little Sister Was Good. After this comes the issue of the character continuing to be good more often than she is naughty; Edwards still has plenty of ideas for amusing childhood antics, but without the naughtiness I found them less engaging. In the final book, My Naughty Little Sister and Bad Harry, the naughtiness comes mostly from Harry. This is a good indicator that it was the right time to end the series.
