A well done compilation which I was a bit confused by at first. What I expected (and perhaps I’m just not familiar enough with the concept) was something along the lines of most academic readers wherein it’s a few examples of their work introduced with some critical lens. Instead it featured entirely original essays outright offering very strong critiques of Harvey’s work, including some controversies of his I’m not quite familiar with. It’s all an issue of all argumentation being based on omission. While most of the authors have very high praise of Harvey, most people in the work critique him as a class reductionist. In fact several of the essays included have a heavy focus on his work “Condition of Postmodernity,” (logical, since it was the most popular at the time of the publication of the volume) and in particular its supposed dismissal of postmodern/poststructuralist feminism. I will admit I am far more familiar with his more recent work, which, though it prioritizes class, is nowhere near as dismissive of gender, racial and sexual issues to the extent of many contemporary “class reductionists,” though this could just be in response to this volume in particular, which ranges from harsh to delicate in its critique. Alongside this feminist angle, anti-Marxist, environmentalist and indeed revolutionaries make their appearance to join in on the critique, whilst, with the exception of the former, paying their respects to the great geographer.
