My mother always said, “You need to act like a lady if you are ever going to be the perfect wife.” Well, that would require me to first become ‘lady like’, and then sell my soul to the devil. Down south, women were groomed to be the perfect trophy wives. One must be the total package, in order to catch a man that had sort of social ranking at the country club. To my parents and sister’s dismay, being sold off to the highest bidder in society wasn’t the life for me.
Hi I’m Molly, and anything but the southern belle type. My hair isn't blonde and I don’t wear dresses. My shoe selection consists of my favorite chucks, and I’m lucky that I shower daily. I bite my nails and play guitar, and well my makeup regimen involves the very basics. I don’t hold any pageant titles and I’m entirely too awkward at social gatherings.
So what does one do when her younger sister finds the man of her dreams and gets married? You suck it up and put on that horrible bridesmaid dress, and explain to everyone that you are perfectly content on living alone for the rest of your life. Then, you get the hell out of there.
I just want to play my music and live my life, free of sparkles and crowns. Being twenty-five and not married wasn't the end of the world, in reality, it is just the beginning. I am not going to worry about finding “the one” till it finds me. One afternoon I walked right into all six-foot-three rock star of it, shit.
Hi, my name is Molly, and I’m a complete Hot Southern Mess.
Did I read the same book as these other reviewers?? I don't get it. *shakes head* I was so excited to start this book. It sounded right up my alley. I loved the cover, the title, and the description. It had a tough, strong heroine with a sarcastic sense of humor and a sexy rockstar. How could I go wrong with all that potential? Apparently it's entirely possible. I am so disgusted. It just kept getting worse and worse for me. And to top it all off...a cliffhanger. Oh, how I disliked this book. Let me count the ways.
Ok. Not everything. (But almost.)
The heroine is a tough rocker chick type-plays guitar, dyed black hair with purple streaks, gauges in her ears, nipple rings...etc. I loved that and I loved her potty mouth and sarcastic sense of humor. That's what pulled me in. Unfortunately this girl had a button that she just loved to push. Her own personal self-destruct button.
So Molly gets the job of a lifetime going on tour with one of her favorite rock bands. Which by the way, pretty much just fell in her lap. She had an interview for PA to an executive in the company that handles the band. She shows up, the woman was frazzled and work stressed and hired her on the spot. Without doing a background check, asking any type of questions, or making sure she wasn't some crazy out to get close to the band. Yeah, that's gonna happen. Oh, you want to work here? No probs. Let's go!
Then, Molly proceeds to get the hots for not one, but TWO rockstars while touring with them. One treats her with respect and the other treats her like horse shit. And guess which one she is more attracted to? Hmmm?
The love triangle commenced and right away I was completely disgusted and clawing my nails down my face while praying to all that is holy that she would get smacked by a 2X4 and get some sense knocked into her. Alas that didn't happen. Although her klutzy self did trip and fall flat on her face multiple times to the point where she got bruised up like she was in a fight with a champion boxer. Seriously, is anyone THAT much of a klutz? Hey, maybe that's why she makes these moronic choices.
So she decides to sleep with dickhead rocker and he immediately acts like he doesn't know her the next day. Sooo, she decides to give rocker #2 a shot. They go on a couple dates and he is very nice to her. Then she decides, I'm gonna go sleep with dickhead rocker again, because I love how he ignores me afterward and then proceeds to bang groupies after shows. Of course she has no guilt over the fact that she did this even though rocker #2 has treated her like gold. And the twist?...turns out rocker #2 is not all that nice. Let's just say that he wasn't exactly a faithful guy. Here's the kicker though...Molly has the absolute gall to get pissed at him and kick him in the gnads. I mean, really? You sleep around behind his back more than one time and you're outraged?
And she just can't seem to stop thinking about dickhead rocker. Why? WHY???
Maybe it's the totally underwhelming compliments he gives her:
"There's just something about you Molly Anne. I can't quite put my finger on what the attraction is to you, but it's there.
"You work for me, got it? Just because Stephanie employs you, I am the reason you get paid. So if I want to fuck some chick after the show I'm going to do just that. I call the shots, not you. Just because we have this weird connection going on between us doesn't make you the boss."
Yet another example of his douche canoe ways. So here's her response:
I should be pissed that he came after me that way. No one ever spoke to me in that tone, and I wasn't about to let some arrogant rock star treat me that way. But the only thing that played out in my head was that he 'claimed' we had a connection. Yep, stick a fork in me, I'm done."
And then there's the comment he made that showed his soft side (really, not being sarcastic):
"There is something very innocent about the way you conduct yourself. I don't see that that much anymore." Reid gave me a soft smile that melted my heart on the spot.
So, this pierced girl with the dyed hair that curses like a sailor dropping f-bombs, dances topless on a table while drunk, and has sex with 2 guys...her conduct seems innocent? Uh.... is this a parallel universe?
And finally, let me just say, I read a lot of self-pub books and generally don't have a problem with some basic editing issues. But this was just horrendous. Not only did this book have the dreaded lack of contractions leading to robotic speech...(it is, she is, he is, they are) there were so many times I had to re-read a sentence in order to fully understand past the typos and mixed words. (conceited/conceded) It was a little frustrating having to interpret while trying to sink into a story.
Clearly, there was one thing that was spot-on about this book and that was the title. The Hot Mess part? That was totally working. This book just wasn't for me.
***I was given a free copy of this book by the author in return for my honest opinion in association with A Girl Amongst Books blog ***
I am a sucker for rocker romances so as soon as I saw this was a romance between a rocker and rebel girl raised as 'Southern Royalty' and from a world of beauty pageants and posh country clubs but who just never fit it, I thought it sounded like a new twist on my favorite type of story that I had to read.
Molly hated everything about her privileged background from her snooty, cold family to the constant pressure to fit in and be a perfect trophy wife until one day, having got sick of her life, she decides to take control and change it.
She loves music, she has tats, piercings and wild hair so decides that Seattle is the place to go. Here she can make her own way on her own terms, with only her vintage car and her beloved guitar keeping her company. Her insights as narrator at the beginning are witty and the descriptions of her life and her family were fun to read. This woman can trip and fall over absolutely anything, and she does, regularly. Is it wrong that I enjoy reading about people tripping over? Anyway...
Once in Seattle she immediately finds works for a music management company and within days she's off touring with two rock bands comprising a mixed bag of hot man whores all having the time of their life. It's poor Molly's job to keep them all in line. The exchanges between the rockers are funny and light and really make this part of the book fun to read.
Molly is attracted to the lead singers from both bands - one is seemingly quiet and undemanding, the other only speaks to her when the mood strikes him and doesn't let his attraction to Molly get in the way of seeing other women. Unfortunately, that was a problem for me; Molly was immediately attracted to bad boy Reid but I didn't understand the attraction or really want him for Molly. He came over as a total jerk with zero redeeming features. Their connection was presented as an insta-love attraction, but at first, every time he opens his mouth it's to say something lewd to her. Other times, his mouth was wrapped around another woman. After a while we do get to see more of Reid's personality and he becomes more likable, but it was hard to understand or feel the supposed instant attraction and this rather marred my enjoyment of the story. I was kind of hoping she would put her feisty, no-nonsense attitude to good use and tell him to poke it, but instead Molly repeatedly told us that there was a chemistry between them. I'm afraid I wasn't feeling it.
I liked Molly's attitude and her determination not to let the situation get her down, that was refreshing, but then at other times, her reactions seemed a little over-dramatic and out of character. See's the guy she's been seeing with someone else=fine; thinks she's left her guitar in the back of the car but hasn't=breakdown. One moment she's a no nonsense, independent modern gal who can take on anything and win, the next she's a hormonal drama queen who needs a big strong man to take care of her. I guess this was part of the 'mess' of her personality, but it sometimes seemed a little inconsistent to me.
It ended on a HUGE cliffhanger and the next part is out sometime in the spring, so we don't get to find how Molly's story works out in this one or whether she finds happiness. I personally like a warning in these situations so that I can hold on until the series is complete before reading it, but that's just personal choice.
If you enjoy hot rocker romances featuring women who are not simpering virgins you'll probably like this. This was an engaging read but I'm afraid I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.
I stumbled upon this book and the cover and title sucked me in right away.
The first scene is in a bridal salon and ends in the main character, Molly Anne, flipping her snooty sister off and walking out. I was instantly on her side. With her hair dyed black with purple streaks, she excels at rejecting the southern royalty she born into.
In an effort to break free of the expectations, Molly flees the South with her two most prized possessions - her car and her guitar. She herself in Seattle and a job as a production assistant to a music manager.
Two bands and two hot lead singers keeps Molly on her toes. Now here is where I start to have a problem. Though it starts out with one being sweet but turns out - both guys are douchebags. One just wears it better. Molly falls for the douchiness and loses all her brass and sass. I wanted one of them to have these redeeming qualities that make me fall in love with them - thus it would be reasonable for Molly to do the same. However, so far that has not happened.
Molly likes to "embrace her sexuality" however, you can't pout or feel hurt when you get nothing more than a casual "Hey" when passing in the halls the next day. You knew the score when you dropped your drawers sister. .
I found Molly and her choices quite frustrating and the editting was worse as the book went on.

Molly Anne McGlenister has been born into Southern Royalty, as she calls it, but she doesn't want to be a plastic Barbie clone. She is the black sheep of the family, so she dyes her hair black. She is has an artistic heart, so she adds streaks of bright color to that hair. She is a guitar-playing, klutzy, independent, emotional, wreck. After her sister's fairy tale wedding, Molly hits the road to find her own version of happily ever after and freedom. With anywhere a possibility, she chooses Seattle, home of alternative music. Because of her trust fund, she is able to get a healthy start without worry, and is lucky enough to land a dream job as a PA to a manager of rising rock stars. Thrown into life on the road with the band Black Laden and their opening act Political Downfall., and lusting after both of their drop-dead sexy, alpha, front men, Molly will have to choose her own path to happiness.
After my volunteer shift at A Gift for Teaching (agiftforteaching.org), my husband picked me up because the kid had my car. I was reading while DH drove. He told me I was actually making "snark" sounds like the Pillsbury dough boy in the Geico ads! I told him most of my laughing out loud was the chapter titles (OMG, the titles!).
As soon as my son got home from work, I warned him that I was enjoying this book. He interrupted me once and I gave him a short answer. He interrupted twice, and I gave him a pointed look and a short answer. He interrupted a third time and all I did was look. The look on his face was priceless! He knew he had pushed me too far. So, he went back to his book. I told him he had just earned his place in this blog post.
This book definitely could have used a professional editor (or a grammar Nazi beta). As a Steelers/Penguins/Pirates fan raised in Western Pennsylvania, for me the most irritating error was the spelling of Pittsburgh. I'll give you a little history lesson as told to me by my father. During/after World War II, the American people of German descent wanted to distance themselves from the atrocities of the war as much as possible. One of those ways to drop the "h" in any town or city that ended in "burgh." The one and only city in the U.S. to refuse to drop their "h" is Pittsburgh. There are no people more proud of their city without boasting of themselves than those from Pittsburgh and her surrounding cities and town. In addition to my concern about my beloved 'Burgh, there were words that were completely incorrect for the sentence, but sounded like close to the right word, duplicated words, and homonyms (sight for site).
I love the title of this series, probably because I love the song (Miranda Lambert – Mama's Broken Heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yg05...) Trust me, the humor, romance, and familial angst far outweigh the errors. This book is a definite MUST-READ in my humble opinion. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and hope that Ms. Hardenbrook will include me when it is released as well.

Holy hot damn! Hot Southern Mess is a brilliant name for this book.
We have Molly, poor girl has been ridiculed by her mother and younger sister most of her life. Molly has had to live her life under a microscope of country clubs, pageants and making sure to dress and talk a certain way. After a horrid experience at her younger sister's wedding, Molly decides to leave her southern town and head out to experience life. She books a one-way ticket to Seattle. She soon lands a job in the music industry as a PA to a manger and finds herself quickly on tour with one of the hottest rock bands around. What Molly also finds is an attraction to 2 men, one she believes could give her that safe happy life and the other gives her shockwaves down to her soul. She will get to know them both and becomes more drawn to one. There are startling revelation and soon Molly slowly starts to lose the person she once was into someone who she and others can't recognize. Molly's life starts spinning more out of control and then she is seeking to get away from all of her problems with someone from her past. But someone from her present is in love with her and lays it all out for her to grab and take. Molly's world is insane, she is definitely one HOT MESS!!
T.A Hardenbrook has written a book filled with crafty wittiness, snarky comeback, and oh shit did she just do that moments. Each chapter has a clever title with great content to follow. I loved every second of each line in this book. The books ends with an oh crap and a swoony text that will make your heart sigh. Yes this is part of a series, but DO NOT let that stop you. This book you will want to read. It is much different than any other book out there. I loved it and I promise you will too.
Molly was brought up to be a perfect southern lady. Her mom put her in pageants as a child and taught her that the most important thing was to be a lady so she could be a good wife. Molly wasn't having any of that and I loved it!
She's strong, ballsy, clumsy, sarcastic, and just awesome. After suffering through the hell that was her sisters wedding, she decides that it's time to go off on her own and leaves home without so much as a second thought.
She moves to Seattle where she soon becomes a personal assistant in a music management company. There she meets Reid, the lead singer of not only one of her favorite bands, but the band she will be working with.
She makes quite the impression when she rips her pants in front of him. It wouldn't have been so bad if she were wearing underwear!
She soon finds herself in a bit of a love triangle as she fights her feelings for both Reid and Brantley, a member of the opening band.
Whereas Reid is all hot with her one second and cold the next, Brantley is always attentive and open about how much he wants Molly. That is, until Brantley has a guest show up that Molly knew nothing about.
If there is one thing I like, it's a book that can make me laugh and keep me wanting more. That's exactly what this one did.
If you're wondering what life on the road would be like in a tour bus full of rockstars - this is the book for you!
Started 2014 out with a great book - 5 stars for sure!
Not rating since I wasn't able to even finish this book.
I chose this book to read for my monthly Prime Lending Library Book. The title caught my eye (Miranda Lambert, anyone?) and after reading the blurb I decided to give it a try. My advice to you? Skip this title.
For the first part of the book we hear over and over again about how different Molly is compared to her snooty parents and Queen Bitch of a sister. She has purple and black hair and piercings and damn it all to hell they just don't understand. She is so much better then they are. So Molly decides to take off to San Fransisco and gets a job right away. It's her dream job in the music industry.
The book started to pick up a bit at this point and I started to think I would actually like it. Unfortunately that feeling died almost as quickly as the heroines desire to bang two band members.
I stopped at 62% but to be honest I started skimming around 45%.
Now, let me start out by admitting that in the beginning of reading/editing this book I didn’t think it was going to be my cup of tea, as I’m not usually one for rocker romances or women who have their…… well, let’s just say piercings. But boy did the author proved me wrong! I loved this book! It was suspenseful, romantic, infuriating at times, and just flat out entertaining at others. It kept me wanting more and kept me intrigued to know how it was going to turn out. It’s not your typical romance novel in any way, shape, or form. It doesn’t even end typically, which, trust me, is a good thing. It’s unpredictable, with several plot twists and action scenes that just come out of nowhere (in a good way). Hot Southern Mess is a hot hit!
this book was amazing! it has everything a great book should have. some comedy, drama, a little bit of a love triangle, rock, steamy sex, pretty much everything...not to mention it gave me a huge book hangover because of the.cliffhanger. I can't wait for the second one. there wasn't anything in this.book I didn't like. there were parts where my jaw dropped because I wasn't suspecting it. anyone looking for a great read....your in the right spot!!!
T.A. has another winner on her hands with this book! I give this a solid 4.5 stars. I love the characters and the story line. I think Molly will strike a chord with every woman out there. The flow of the book works well and I can't wait for more!!!

Molly grew up never quite hitting the mark on her ‘southern charm’. She did what she had to do in order to please her parents, but in turn never pleased herself. Molly came from a life where money meant status and ones goal was to marry and become a trophy wife. We are introduced to Molly as she is preparing for her little sisters wedding and getting the run around for not being married herself. After the wedding Molly finds herself heading across the country to a place incredibly different than her country club up bringing has been; Seattle. Shortly after moving, Molly finds herself on tour with two bands working for a management company as a PA for the band’s manager. Molly doesn’t think going on tour and babysitting eight guys could be that difficult, but Molly’s world is soon turned upside down by a hot as sin rock God by the name of Reid.
Molly is a spitfire. She is bold but still lacks total confidence in who she is, which makes her that much more likeable. Reid is one of those characters you love to hate. I wanted to throw my kindle more than once because of him, but ended up loving him. Hot Southern Mess is a story about finding yourself. It’s about adjusting to who you want to be and not what others want you to be. Molly overcomes so much during this book and I cannot wait for the next one. This book had me laughing out loud every single chapter, just like TA said, and had my mouth hanging open from the twist and turns. I would defiantly recommend this book for anyone looking for a rocking, hilarious romance! ~Mags
If her family had had their way, Molly would have been the perfect Southern woman. However, Molly is from it, she is the round peg in a house full of square ones while she should have her fair up in a tizzy, hers is blue and has piercings. Having just been through the wedding from hell for her sister, Molly has had enough. Packing her bags impulsively, Molly flees Georgia for Seattle.
She figured she would take her chances, but when Molly gets a job as a PA for the rock band Black Laden, she is elated. She did not expect to be attracted to Reid though, the lead singer who seems to always have a blonde skanky woman by his side. She sure has heck did not plan on the attraction to, Brantley, the lead of the opening band either. Torn between raging hormones, she knows both are not commitment type me, but either is she for that matter. Between her neurotic family, a determined Reid who is sending mixed signals, and Brantley claiming he wants to be friends but his flirtation says something altogether, Molly is the epitome of a Southern Hot Mess.
I liked Molly she is pure spitfire. That being said, she is a big ole mess. I thought this was a lot of fun, it had surprising turns and had you laughing until the end. I know who I am rooting for and there is a cliffhanger that will keep you watching your calendar for the release book.

What's not to love about this book? Molly Anne comes from a very proper background. The country club, upper class background. One problem, she doesn't fit in with her purple streaked hair and emo look. After her sister's wedding, she decides to get on a plane and ahead to Seattle. She ends up getting a job at a management company who manage a famous rock band Black Laden and that's where her life gets complicated. Reid, the lead singer, gorgeous and a rock star. Molly Anne s attracted to him from their first meeting but one thing is not looking for is a relationship and neither is Reid if the amount of women he sleeps with is anything to go by.
I thought this book was really funny sometimes as Molly Anne is prone to accidents and does get herself in to complicated situations. Even though Reid id hot and cold towards Molly Anne a lot of the time. I was absolutely hooked on this book and i ended up reading this in a day. I'm glad to know it's not the end as there is a book 2 being released in 2014 and i am definitely going to get it.
This book was a first for me by this author. It was a fun little roller coaster ride too. I loved Molly's character. She was different, she was impulsive and she was just what the title implies a HOT MESS! Poor Molly was treated like dirt by her country club family, I really felt for her. I really wanted to slap the shit out of her mom and sister. I loved the quirkiness of her personality, I loved that she was't virginal, I loved that she set out on her own path in life.
Now the male leads. I can't say I was a fan of either Brantley or Reid. I thought they were both a tad douchey. Molly lands her dream job and ends up going on tour with Black Laden, Reid's band, and Political Downfall, Brantley's band. In close quarters with these rock stars she ends up attracted to both of them. I don't want to give anything away, because I hate spoilers, you'll have to buy the book and see who she ends up with for yourself.
All in all it was a sexy, funny book. But had a big cliffy ending. No worries though, book two, Cheap & Classy is coming this spring.
I loved this book...and Molly!! Molly was such a mixed up girl...brought up by a mother that thought she should be perfect and a dad that tried but could not stand up for her enough to make her feel like she belonged and a sister that was just too perfect. She decided to leave and go out on her own..big decision for her and it proved to be the best thing even though she was faced with things she had to learn to deal with. I loved that Molly grew into her own person and didn't take a lot of bull from the guys in the bands..she just needed to grow up and figure out who was true to her and who was using her. The guys in the bands were true rock stars but became family to her . When her father died and she went home she found that family is not always the ones related to you. I can't wait to see what happens with Molly and Reid..maybe they can really be a family.
This book tugged me in 10 different directions. I didn't know what I was getting myself into while reading this book. When Molly Anne moved and found her job I really thought Brantley was her person. That turned into a clusterf*ck. I was heartbroken for a little bit until Reid let down his guard. That man will do anything for Molly Anne. The ending had me wiping tears. I need number #2 ASAP! Love this author and will continue to read her books!
This was a hell of a good book!! So funny that I automatically had to give it 5 stars. Then it had to play with my mind...like it suckered me into a freaking !!! But it bitch slapped me and said haha just kidding! :P And I was glad because I really really don't like those books. But anyway this book unfortunately ends on a cliff hanger -_- so I am itching to get my hands on the second book!! I hope it is as funny and kick ass as the first one! :)
The main character is delightfully snarky and pessimistic to the point of abject stupidity. Reid is an absolute poster boy for STDs. Brantley's descent into cheating scumbag was unnecessary. The content needs proofreading, though, which brings the rating from 4 stars to 3.
I actually really liked this! it was funny and hot.. I totally got pissed at her family!! what stuck up nob-jockeys!! (sorry for my language) I can't believe how it needed .. I was like OMG !! I can't wait long for this book T.A !! don't make me wait long please x
I really liked this book. Molly was very sassy and didn't take crap from anyone. If she did it wasn't for very long before she put them in their place.
I mostly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequel. My only real quibble was the last interaction between Reid and Molly seemed a little forced and didn't make much sense.
