This book was recommended to me by my wife. She said it was one of her favorites when she was a young teenager. I can see why. It deals with a theme that is quite common in overly-conscientious children: their tendency to take too much responsibility for others. In dealing with this theme, the author does a decent job, in my opinion, presenting the rational for people to take responsibility for themselves while having good boundaries with others. The writing seemed a bit trite and condescending at times, which may be overlooked by some teenagers. For adults, I wouldn't really say that the book is a necessary read.
OMG i read this book way back in elementary school and never was able to track it down until almost 40 years later thanks to inter-library loaning. The book is just as I remember, sweet, innocent and perfect for grades 3-6. I feel like I regained a few days of my childhood back. Book was written in the mid 80's and is a true gen x book.
Read this one in grade school. I remember I didn't really like it- the girl was always complaining about everyone and all of the responsibilities she had. Mostly, I remember her desperately wanting this puppy "the color of a toasted marshmallow", whom she would call "Marshmallow". I don't know why, but that's the part that always comes to mind, as an adult.
I really enjoyed this one. It's sweet and easy to read and has a clear plot. All the characters are enjoyable and everything ends up happy. Recommended for 4th & 5th graders (girls and boys).
