After Luke sees the treatment the other prisoners receive as they travel to the mine, Jagger’s ownership is more critical than ever.
Jagger has his harsh side, but considering the care he's shown, he’ll surely back off and stop pushing the one thing Luke isn't keen on. He's happy to serve in every other way, so why does it matter if he can't stand a certain, public activity?
Guards have rules too, and they aren't to break the system they’ve grown among themselves. They expect each other to put their wants first, and a guard has to be careful about how much affection and care they show. Jagger can’t have a pet who refuses to fully submit. To protect them both, he'll break Luke to get rid of that last defiant spark, but can he do it without destroying Luke's spirit?
Luke is sure he's ruined what they've built so far, and his only chance to keep their relationship might be to swallow his pride.
Tws, but the story gets better! Jagger and Luke are on the way to the prison now, and Luke finally sees how bad some of the other guards can really be when a criminal who refused to be with a guard was r@ped. It's not super graphic, but you can see how bad the others are.
Of course, Luke flips in private, and I thought Jagger didn’t care for a moment, but he explains in a way how their system works:
You're either one of them...or you're not. Jagger can get away with protecting Luke to an extent, but he can't save others.
Jagger can't even say no to wages. I'm sure he could probably play off once in a great while as 'I'm tired, not tonight',but the guards know how others are, and if you start acting different, they think you respect your pet too much, and that's a big no.
Luke gets bratty at some point, and Jagger puts a quick stop to that. Heh heh. It's hard, BUT it makes Luke able to show compliance in front of the others so he's the pet other guards expect to see. In private, Jagger is much nicer.
And then the end came, and I found out the reason for the layers Jagger wears. 🥺 holy cow...no wonder Jagger has to be that way and there and insistent that Luke acts appropriately
I don't know. The story left a bitter taste in me. It has a plot but also not. It is messy, raw and the storytelling is superficial that it neither grabbed my attention nor interest until the end. I'm aware that it is a short story but it could create that world better, with words. I couldn't read with joy even though it sparkled with some potentials when Luke talked about his power and all these fairies but what else? The author could do a way too much better job to describe the world they created in this book. Plus, one and longer book could be better than the parted, 3 books. The last chapter was so absurd. It didn’t harmonise well with the previous chapter, even when Jagger's train of thought led to this scene. It ended there so weirdly, like at this point it's not even a cliffhanger. I wonder if Luke will commit a crime to stay with him or Jagger will quit? Made me curious.
Picking up after the first book, the abuse picks up for our main character. Part to break him down to be a better "pet" but also to prepare him for what is to come. We learn a little more about the world they are in, but the little snippets aren't enough. In the first book I didn't even know it wasn't taking place on earth. So the world building leaves a lot to be desired. I will say, I like when I hear about a new torture device and then need to google it. I've learned a lot reading dark books. There was a smidge more "romance" in this book. Can't wait to read the third. Hopefully we get a satisfying conclusion.
