"I'd lost my entire team, and nearly lost my life. In a way, I had lost my life, and was left with this--a tightrope walk between hunting down creatures people didn't believe existed, and being locked up as one."

After a career-ending incident on a covert military operation, Amber Farrell is surprised to find herself back in her home town of Denver working as a rookie policewoman. But what happened in the army casts a shadow across her life from which she will never be free.

The prequel to the Bite Back series introduces Amber Farrell, a kick ass lady with a secret problem--she's been bitten by a vampire. She's working hard to start a new life, hold down a job and meet all the expectations put on her. When people start to die suspiciously in Denver, Amber has to decide between duty and instinct, between what she should do and what she must do.

I was born in Africa and left out in the sun too often.

After being persuaded that I wasn't going to be able to be a cowboy if I grew up, I got interested in philosophy and psychology. Tending bars proved to me they weren't as much fun as they sounded. While trying to enroll in a class to read Science Fiction full time, I ended up taking an electronic engineering degree which splendidly qualified me to move into marketing. That in turn spawned a late onset career in creative writing.

When not writing, I fly a microlight aircraft, or get muddy on a mountain bike.

I love reading obviously. Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Thrillers, History, Crime, Art, oh nearly everything.

Amber was an elite military operator...until her entire team was decimated by vampires and she was turned. Now she works for the Denver Police Department where she is seen as a loose canon while she reports to her military minders who no longer trust her.

When a group of rogue vampires show up in Denver, she is the only one who can take them on with any hope of winning. But as the bodies pile up the police are intent on painting it as gang related violence and are determined to keep her well away from the case.

Raw Deal is quick and easy read. It reminded me a little of those great hard boiled PI novels of the 1930s by Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. Great fun and well worth the effort.

So, it's been half a year since I read Bite Back #1 and #2. I gave them 6 stars in my review then. Let's call it me being a little less experienced and a little more starved for urban fantasy fiction. I'm rating this 4 stars. Why? Because since Bite Back I went through over 70 somewhat similar books (just look at my 'read' shelf - you'll understand). So, obviously, I'm a little 'stuffed' right now. And also because there's not much new stuff here - most of the events happening in the book have been described in Bite Back, so there's not much anticipation left. What I did think after reading the book, however, is that it should have been written first. I still remember my confusion when the protagonist started the story with "It's been a year and I'm still neither dead, nor undead" - I had a kindle copy, and I turned back a page to make sure I was at the beginning of the book. So my suggestion is: if you haven't read Bite Back #1 yet, start with this book - it'll introduce you to the story in a gentlier way; if you have read the original series (and liked it), then this book will provide you with a 'snack' while you're waiting for the sequel.

Amber Farrell is ex-military and now she is working as a police officer.

Her team was attacked and killed by vampires. She was the only one who survived, but she was bitten and none of the army scientists know whether she will become a vampire or not. As far as the general public, her family, her friends and her colleagues are concerned, she is a very well-trained veteran who is a police rookie now. That was a bit weird, but you understand the reasons behind her silence through the story.

Her job is to check if there are any vampires in Denver while working as a police officer.
What I did not like is that a lot of chapters end in some kind of future disaster announcement, but that is just my personal preference and doesn't have anything to do with how good this story is. Other than that, this story is a great introduction into Bite Back series.

What a great addition to the Bite Back series!!! Again Mr. Henwick's work kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page! Raw Deal makes me want to read this amazing series all over again...so, I think I'll just have to start re-reading, while waiting for Wild Card to be published in August! :-)

Another amazing novel from Mr.Mark Henwick. His writing always makes you want to keep reading. And when your brain realizes that there is nothing of his that you haven't read? It tries to persuade you that kidnaping & locking him up so he can write the next installment faster is not morally reprehensible... What? No, I wouldn't really do that. That's crazy. Heh. Heh.

Raw Deal “I’d lost my entire team, and nearly lost my life. In a way, I had lost my life, and was left with this—a tightrope walk between hunting down creatures people didn’t believe existed, and being locked up as one.”

It isn’t often that a writer comes along who really hits all my buttons. Of course, I am sort of an oddball myself. I like women characters who can, in a word, kick-ass, take-names, and generally stick up for herself – with a little help from her friends, and without having to have a male holding her hand and making the big-bad go away with her cheering him on. I like women characters with depth, who have a backstory that is tough, but that she makes it through on her own.

Amber is definitely tough, but she is also a good person, with heart and soul and a deep desire to do the right thing. She doesn’t lay down and cry because her life has gone into the toilet, but she doesn’t take it out on others, either. She is the kind of person that others immediately trust and believe in.

In this prequel to the Amber Farrell “Bite Back” series, Amber’s life is something of a walk through the fun house mirrors. Nothing is as it seems, only when it is. Her life has been turned upside down, ripped apart, and stomped on a few times for good measure by a government she once trusted. She is back “home” doing a job she never expected, with Big Brother watching over her shoulder, waiting with baited breath to snatch her back to a cold, concrete cell, never again to see the light of day, victim to needles and knives. It is enough to make the strongest woman cringe a bit.

If you have read the Bite Back series, this will give you the back story on Amber’s introduction back into Denver’s seedier side. If this is the first you have heard about Amber, grab this novella first, then move on to Sleight of Hand Sleight of Hand

You won't be able to resist Hidden Trump Hidden Trump

This is a killer series about a woman who is strong enough to know what she wants and goes after it, without walking all over everyone to get there. Buy the books (this one is FREE) and read them. You won’t be disappointed.

I will now be on pins-and-needles waiting for the next to come out!

This is a prequel to the Bite Back series which I haven't read yet. Perhaps I should have started with those before this because a lot seemed to be happening rather fast and I couldn't connect with the characters very much. It is interesting enough though for me to want to continue reading the rest of the books.

Great combination of police procedural/ urban fantasy with vampires. I enjoy urban fantasy but I am not too fond of most vampire plotlines. This one works well. It does require suspension of belief, after all there are vampires ... but the characterization is excellent and definitely left me wanting more of the series.

I got this book because I am a fan of police fiction, especially in the speculative fiction genres. There is a lot to like in this story. But the story is very short, even for a Novella. It was clearly written to be a teaser to get you to buy the rest of the series, which takes a little away from the story quality. But over all, I enjoyed it.

What happens?
We are taken into Amber's life after her bite but just before she becomes a private eye. Shes currently working for both the police and the army without the police knowing.
Final thoughts
Its a small insight into Amber. I don't necessary think I learnt anything new but it was nice to read when I had already read some of this series. Its interesting and funny to read where she was and where she is now in terms of career, personal and the actual character development. I still like Amber but I do like her more in the actual series book of who she is rather than this character who is a bit less Amber and more quiet in a comparison. I am so babbling.

I like this prequel!
