Silas Drake doesn’t do commitments. Or second dates. Or guilt.
Yeah, he used to be an assassin. He used to kill people. And yeah, he breaks girls’ hearts on a routine basis. He’s an asshole. So what?
When Rolf, a dangerous man from his past, arrives in Morgantown, Silas is itching to go after him. The only problem is that he’s the best man in his friends’ Griffin’s and Leigh’s wedding, which is a time-consuming distraction.
Things get more complicated when Silas finds out that the random girl he took home the night before is actually Griffin’s little sister, Christa. For some reason, Griffin isn’t keen on Silas’ getting involved with her.
When Rolf captures both Silas and Christa, he uses them in deadly game of cat and mouse, hunting them down for his own entertainment. They’re in the woods, on the run. Rolf has a gun, and he’s chasing them.
Silas has to do everything in his power to protect Christa. But trying to keep her safe might be easier for him than facing the fact that he’s developing feelings for her.
V. J. Chambers writes about being inexplicably attracted to the dangerously alluring. Her works span mundane settings and fantastic ones. She writes about serial killers, cult leaders, werewolves, witches, for-hire assassins, zombies, space pirates, and regular everyday people.
She lives in Shepherdstown, WV, with her boyfriend Aaron and their cat Isis.
V.J.Chambers does it again with this thrillride of a novel that puts special meaning to the term "manhunt". It combines all the right ingredients for an intelligent action novel: revenge, past secrets, antiheroes with haunted paths, obsession, and unrequited love. Silas makes an intriguing antihero with his heightened sense of violence, promiscuity, and fierce devotion to those he loves. His nemesis remains a bit reclusive throughout the novel, but no one will care or notice, b/c Silas and Christa captivate attention.
Both Silas and Christa and twisted, damaged, and are right for each other for all the wrong reasons. Part of what I enjoy most in Chamber's novels is her ability to touch upon really serious issues (like rape, abuse, and exploitation) while not suffocating the reader with it. It's realistic without being bombastic, and it adds a degree of human-ness to the characters that action figures often lack. I also enjoyed the fact that this novel puts a twist on the whole "unrequited love" angle; for once it's not the woman who is left high and dry, and without spoiling it that's all I'll say.
Chamber's books are hard to put down. Silas was a good time!
I felt this book had many different elements from different books that I have loved reading over the past couple of years. It had the kind of romance between the main characters that I have come to know and love from V.J. Chambers with a twist since Silas is different from her other main characters. It had the violence and action that you would also come to expect from a Chambers novel. It kept you guessing all the way till the end. I also have to say that I enjoy how Chambers is bringing in a more "adult" feeling to the her books lately especially when it comes to the intimate relationship that is being developed between the main characters. Overall, this was a great read and I would recommend it to everyone.
Funny story about this, without giving too much away. I'm a breakfast attenand, my day starts at 5 a.m. So I read all the way up until the alarm clock goes off and I go to work like a zombie. This particular day I was standing in my dining room with a look of horror on my face. There was at least 25 men with bow and arrows just toting them around like it was nothing. Archery trade show was in town. I'm glad I wasn't being hunted!
Oh i absolutely loved Silas!!!! He is a real caveman but with a heart of gold!!!!! He will do anything for the people he loves!!!! This book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time!!!!!!
