Stains

Rate this book
After the events of Underneath, Research Station 17 stood quiet.

But not for long.

Kent Hawks, co-CEO of Hawks/Carpenter, wants it back up and running. Station 17 is his family's legacy, and it already has a few black marks on it without a failed project on a grand scale. Despite the protests of his rival, Alice Carpenter, Hawks gets a crew together to travel to Station 17.

Once there though, he finds his already fractured psyche put under pressure by incompetent staff, a broken facility and the harsh environment. With his headaches increasing, the mental noise becoming searing pain, Kent soon finds an unlikely ally who tells him of an even greater threat.

Rot.

The sequel to best-selling novella Underneath, Stains is a brutal chiller inspired by classics such as The Shining and The Thing. Intense, violent and most of all, scary, Stains is a book that will definitely leave a mark on you.

I finished reading this a day or two ago and I keep thinking about it. The world created in underneath is brought back to life, and you aren't quite sure what is coming for you. I really enjoyed the unsettling nature of book, the uncertainty of what you are reading. Oli successfully manages to make the reader question the characters in such a way that the characters don't realise what is happening. Expect an unsatisfying ending with perfect closure.

A good read, being compared to the Shining meant I knew what to expect and the story did have many similarities. Was fun to read.
