At fifteen, Eileen Robinson lives in an ideal, middle class African-American family in Houston, Texas. When her father is murdered, an innocent victim in a drive by shooting, her sheltered life spirals downward into gloom. Her once stay-at-home mother is forced to go to work cleaning offices at night. Instead of enjoying her carefree teenage years hanging with her friends, Eileen is relegated to babysitting her two younger sisters. One night she sneaks out on them. Trying to cook something, they die in a fire.
Tormented and wanting to kill herself, Eileen runs away from home. Befriended by a drug dealer, she moves in with him. At twenty-one she is a single mother of two, falsely convicted of killing a state senator’s son. At thirty-two she is executed. Or is she?
I really enjoyed reading this book - it engaged me straight away and kept me interested until I came to the very end.
Among so many books out there to choose from each and every single day, I probably would not have come across this one, had I not posted a discussion via the Crime Fiction group in LinkedIn. I'm pleased to have 'discovered' the author's book and would recommend this book to those enjoying a fast, action packed crime thriller.
I learnt something I did not know about Death Row and was throughly impressed with how the story pan out. The main characters are interesting, despite their flaws. I enjoyed following them, and so much so that this is my Book of the Month on my website for November.
This is not a happy book by any means, but it was still a good one. The writing was well done. The characters were a bit typical but it was interesting to see how they reacted to their situation. I would definitely consider this book a thriller and a lot of it was unpredictable. Would I read more by this author? Maybe. Would I recommend this book to others? Probably not.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
I really enjoyed this book and was hooked from the very first page. Although the book was a bit different from what I had expected at the beginning I found it exciting and wanted to know what is going to happen to the main character. I could emphathise with Eileen and found it horrible that something like that can happen to a person.
Personally I feel that the first part of the story was better thought through, as towards the end there were more and more episodes that I found slightly unrealistic but despite this it's a very enjoyable story and I would recommend it to everyone who wants a thriller with a difference.
This story was by far the most disturbing story about criminal justice I have ever read. Although the storyline is not actually about the criminal justice system, it describes it in scary and disturbing ways. I loved the idea behind the book and was engaged all the way to the end.
This was a new spin on a medical thriller. Inmates on death row are used as guinea pigs in a new technology in nano robots for curing HIV. there's a lot of drama and suspense. I think it was overall a pretty good read.
