A 52,000 word historical suspense fantasy about a female spy who doesn’t let death get in the way of avenging her murder. She argues her case at the Pearly Gates and is allowed to return to 1946 New York where she stumbles upon a plot to assassinate the American president. She immediately switches into save-the-world mode, however, being a ghost has a learning curve and its own set of regulations. If this spirited spy doesn't learn to follow the rules—the president may die, and Evangeline's afterlife could be downgraded to much warmer environs.
C. A. Pack is the author of the episodic YA fantasy seres, The Library of Illumination and can usually be found wandering around inside her imagination looking for fun things to write about. Some people may think that's a stupid place to hang out, but for her it's really quite pleasant.
She is currently at work on her seventh adventure in the episodic Library of Illumination series and on her fourth novel featuring Evangeline. She's an award-winning journalist, and former anchor/assignment manager at LI News Tonight in New York. She thinks fiction is a lot more fun.
A current member of International ThrillerWriters, and Sisters in Crime, C.A. is also a former president of the Press Club of Long Island. She lives in Westbury, NY, with her husband, a couple of picky parrots, and dozens of imaginary characters who are constantly demanding page space.
Evangeline is an MI6 operative who has recently been killed and now has to avenge her murder. She is sent back to Earth by Saint Peter to bring her killer to justice. However, she did not expect to stumble upon old friends and various different murder plots including a plot to kill the president! As well as trying to avenge her own death and help her friend avenge his she must also try to save the President from being killed.
The plot was interesting and included various unpredictable twists and turns. However most of the characters annoyed me. Evangeline wasn't as strong willed or as independent as I expected an MI6 opertive to be and she seemed to get herself killed pretty easy condiering she was supposed to be a top spy! Nigel on the other hand was more tolerable but his constant advances and sexual frustration towards Evangeline was very annoying.
Overall the book wasn't too bad. I would give it 3 stars and I'm grateful to C.A.Pack for providing me with a copy. I would like to see what happens in the next instalment just to see where Pack takes the plot from here and to see how Evie's character develops and how she fairs on Earth alone..
Evangeline has to avenge her murder. After her unfortunate death she is allowed to return to 1946 New York to uncover just who was the one to murder her in the first place. Little did she know she would blunder right into the middle of a presidential assassination plot! Not only is there a president on the line but her very afterlife might be at stake too.
The setting was interesting and very well developed by the author. I thought Evangeline herself was a little annoying; she did not seem entirely as strong willed as I would think a spy, especially one of her caliber, would need to be. Overall this book was a nice and easy read with little twists and turns.
Note: I received this ARC book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Evangeline is a World War II spy who is assassinated when she's about to testify against a Nazi war criminal. She can't get into Heaven immediately, and so to speed the process along Saint Peter sends her spirit back to earth to bring her killer to justice.
Evangeline arrives in New York in 1946 where she reunites with her late colleague, Nigel, who is also looking for his killer so his spirit can finally rest in peace. Together they come across a plot to murder President Harry Truman, and they must work their way around the limitations of their paranormal existence in order to save him.
If you think this is a horror book, well, this is not. It's true that Evangeline is a ghost, but she's not a scary-kind-of-ghost. I would call this book as a mystery/thriller book. In this book, Evangeline has missions, which are saving the president's life and finding her murderer--as a ghost. She gets help from another ghost, Nigel, someone who apparently still loves her sincerely. The way the author describes their love story is a little weird. I don't know how to explain it. It feels like Evangeline and Nigel's relationship is getting to that romance thing, but it never gets there. Do you understand what I mean? I hope you do.
The way this book starts out I wasn’t sure how it would play out. To my awe, it is paced well and written very well. A setting of post war is fitting for this soon to be classic suspense thriller. The characters are believable and the story is more than intriguing, it is a mystery that plays from beginning to end. I highly recommend it to any who have a craving for paranormal adventures. It seems as though even with her death she cannot get away from MI6 and her ghostly partner in the adventure is perfect in every way. The suspense is thrilling and the ending very well written, though I am not one to give it away.
I really enjoyed this book with the history of the war and the Nuremburg trials. A strong woman who wants to do good and will do anything she can to do it, Even if it means breaking the handbook for life rules. Thus ending up in a hot place. A good book,
