Abandoned Memories

Rate this book
Something sinister lurks in the lush Brazilian jungle. . . .

It is 1866 and the fledgling Confederate colony of New Hope is Angeline Moore’s last chance at a normal life. Running from the law, she longs to make a fresh start in this new Southern Utopia. But a series of strange disasters threaten to destroy everything the colonists have worked for, and strange visions threaten to reveal a past Angeline is desperate to hide.

James Callaway failed at both doctoring and preaching, but he hopes that his move to Brazil will give him another chance to become the spiritual leader he so desires. He longs to create a world free from the immorality that plagued every street corner back home and ruined his life. And he believes Angeline is just the sort of refined woman he needs to keep him on the right track.

But something is amiss in New Hope: haunting visions, the discovery of crypts beneath an ancient temple, and an archaic Hebrew book, set the colonists’ fears on edge. When one of their own is murdered, a series of disasters leads them to believe God has brought them to Brazil to defeat an evil that, if unleashed, could wreak havoc on the entire world.

(Potential readers should read the first book in the series -Forsaken Dreams- and the second one -Elusive Hope- before reading this one in order to better understand the story.)

Life in New Hope is harder than the colonists thought it would be. Some supernatural beasts, now free and unchained, are wreaking havoc on the little colony and everybody is in danger. While trying to fight this evil force and save their lives, the group of those who still want to stay in Brazil must face new threats as well: pirates and greedy men menace to destroy their dreams and the almost unreachable utopia they all desire.

“Abandoned Memories” is the last chapter of an incredible series. I enjoyed reading it and being a part of it, because though it was difficult to feel what the characters felt throughout the whole journey, it was very easy to experience their discomfort. I think I grimaced a lot -unknowingly- because of some scenes, especially while reading the third book! Nothing gruesome but I am not exactly the adventurous type of girl!

I knew this was going to be the toughest of all three books because of the protagonists’ past -James Callaway and Angeline Moore- and it was indeed hard to read it. There were lots of sad moments because those two had quite complicated lives back in the US -especially Angeline- and sometimes I wished I could skip all her threatening visions and go directly to the happy ending... because since I read the first book I did hope it would be a happy ending for her! If you have read the previous books you know that Angeline was a prostitute. Now we learn that she was forced to become that kind of woman because after her father’s death she had no one who really cared about her, and that dreadful experience influenced her attitude towards any man she encountered on the ship to Brazil and afterwards in the new colony. She is constantly reminded (by her personal haunting visions) that she is not worthy of any respectable man and that she will never be a proper lady. Not with her past threatening to surface and ruin her future.

In between Angeline’s struggles with creepy men (both fake and real) the hero arrives. But he has his own ghosts to fight with and alas, I thought he was not at all helpful for poor Angeline! He basically blames everybody for his miserable life -he failed as a doctor and as a preacher- but himself. I kept wondering “When is he going to open his eyes and realize that HE made those choices!?” He was really annoying! One moment I thought he was going to be a true hero, the next I hated him for his silly behaviour. Definitely consistency was not one of his traits.

The supernatural theme, already mentioned in the first two books, is central in this one. Our heroes and heroines need to save everybody from a very dangerous threat, and although it is strictly connected to the plot that intertwines with the other books, I found it was too far-fetched. Unbelievable in some parts. All the story of some sort of evil menace, fallen angels and demons was too much for me. Sometimes it seemed I was reading a fantasy book! (Which would have been OK if this was a fantasy novel!)

One of the things I loved, though, was to see how all the couples -new and old ones- faced the difficulties. The men were always ready to protect their wives, physically shielding them from anything that might harm them. And all that love and tenderness is there on those pages ready to make everybody melt like the sun does with the ice. That was definitely my favourite aspect of the book and I especially loved the scenes with Hayden and Magnolia.

Forgiveness is once again the main theme. As for the other books in the “Escape to Paradise” series, learning to ask God for forgiveness, forgiving themselves and the others is what all the characters need to do if they really want to start over. If you are in the mood for a complicated yet gratifying adventure, I recommend “Abandoned Memories” because it is a good finale to a great series!

The third and last installment of the brilliant Escape to Paradise series, and then *sigh*, it is already over before you know it. All three books were wonderful. Forsaken Dreams was the most adventurous, Elusive Hope the most romantic, and Abandoned Memories was definitely the most intense.

Picking up where Elusive Hope left off, the colonists of New Hope are faced with the tragic possibility of evil spiritual forces fighting against them. As a new invisible being is released, the damage, destruction and chaos in New Hope increases, and the preacher of the colony feels the responsibility to set everything to rights rests on his shoulders. After a rather wild youth and painful experiences on the battlefield as a doctor, James Callaway struggles to find himself and his purpose, not feeling adequate for doctoring nor preaching. But as he is the only one who can decipher the old Hebrew book from the temple, he feels responsible for uncovering its secrets, which may be the only way to rid the colony of the evil raging against them. Having also sworn off unsavory women after his history of raking and debauching, James finds himself falling for sweet, reserved Angeline Moore, a beautiful and respectable young woman who harbors deep secrets of her own. Fascinated by her reluctance to talk about her past and her cold attitude towards him, James is desperate to get closer to her, learn more about her, and protect. I lost count of how many times he saves her life during the course of the novel, but he was a real knight in shining armor!

Unbeknownst to him however, he is falling in love with an ex-prostitute (not a spoiler, we know this from the first book). Orphaned at a tender age, Angeline got caught in the web of prostitution as a way of surviving, and Blake's expedition to Brazil was her only way out. She wants nothing to do with men, and "needs to one's protection" (cue hero, lol!), and she especially doesn't need to be noticed by handsome, muscular and oh-so-manly Mr. Callaway, who is clearly a godly and respectable gentleman who would be appalled to learn of her former profession. Desiring only her cat, Stowy, for company, Angeline tries to stay out of James's way, but her task is made hard when he keeps rescuing her and giving her butterflies in the stomach every time he touches her.

Between James and Angeline's budding romance, the brewing spiritual battle ahead, pirates roaming about, villains obsessed with gold, and misadventure upon misadventure, Abandoned Memories is a book that keeps you on edge the whole time, fearing, feeling and sympathizing with the characters. Since they are all the same people from books 1 & 2, it's really easy to connect with and like them all over again as we keep following their adventures deep in the jungles of Brazil. I loved seeing Blake & Eliza as a couple again, and newlyweds Hayden & Magnolia, who can't keep their hands (or faces) off each other. It's not often that we get to see the couples actually living heir married life, and I really enjoyed that aspect.

Sadly, the adventure ends in this book, and pretty much everything is resolved, but I am left wondering one thing in particular: what happens to Magnolia's reflection? In Elusive Hope, every reflecting surface showed the state of her soul instead of her outward appearance. As she struggles to reform her ways and become better to be beautiful on the inside, her reflection slowly becomes prettier, but although Magnolia becomes really remarkable by the end of this novel, she never looks in her mirror at the end to see if her reflection has finally become beautiful. I wish the author had resolved that issue and given her a beautiful reflection, because she really deserved it by the end!

This is not a series that I will soon forget. It was so entrancing, intense and amazing, that I very much want to read then all over again! It's very depressing to reach the end of a wonderful series. :( Good thing there are still tons of book by MaryLu Tyndall that I have never yet read!

**This is not a standalone novel. I strongly recommend to read Forsaken Dreams and Elusive Hope first (in that order).

A great ending to this fun series by MaryLu Tyndall! I was completely stunned by things that happened and loved the ending (especially the epilogue!). I recommend this series if you enjoy historical novels with pirates, action, and suspense. It is GREAT!

By the time I reach the third book in a series, the characters are my "friends." (Don't judge me, I'm an introvert.) And even though I know a series has to come to an end, sometimes I still dread it.

I've been eagerly awaiting Abandoned Memories, the third and final installment in MaryLu Tyndall's Escape to Paradise trilogy that follows a group of American colonists post-Civil War to the jungles of Brazil to form a new Southern utopia. And it was only disappointing in that it signaled the end of the journey for this group. (Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for my review.)

The second book, Elusive Hope, left with a mystery I couldn't wait to see solved. And Abandoned Memories delivered. I only needed one day to read it.

So, if this is the first time you're hearing about this series, let me catch you up without giving too much away. It began with Forsaken Dreams, on a ship bound for Brazil. There we first met this lively bunch of characters who include Captain Blake Wallace and Eliza Crawford, Magnolia Scott and Hayden Gale, and James Callaway and Angeline Moore. each with their own reasons for leaving their lives in America behind for a second chance at happiness. The first book focuses on Blake and Eliza and the obstacles they each need to overcome to find that second chance. Book two is the story of Magnolia and Hayden, who both must give up a dream to discover a life of true purpose and beauty. And book three zeroes in on James and Angeline, both who have disreputable pasts but are determined to make a new start in the new colony.

Woven through each of these stories is a mysterious temple that both draws and repels the members of the budding colony. Some are drawn by the lure of riches buried below. Others are afraid of the darkness enshrouding the temple. In this final book, the mysteries of the temple are fully revealed and these six main characters learn how their lives have been intertwined for a reason: to defeat a terrible evil.

The adventure. The romance. The spiritual battles. It all comes together in a page-turning, heart-pumping story, one I hate to see end, but know it's for the best.

Definitely don't read this one unless you've got your hands on the first two. I'm tempted to go back and read them all together again just for the continuity of the story.

If you're a fan of movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Romancing the Stone, or the TV show Lost, then this is a series you don't want to miss.

WARNING!!!!!

Be ye warned, Mateys. When you open up Abandoned Memories, you will be swept away in a torrent of emotions....not your emotions, my friend, but the emotions of characters so well written...so real...that you will be feeling their pains, struggles, fears, hopes, dreams, love and desperation.
In Forsaken Dreams, book One in this series, you were aboard a ship, getting to know all of the main characters, especially Eliza and Blake...very well written. In Elusive Hope, book Two, you were cast into the jungles of Brazil, learning about each character a bit more...especially Hayden and Magnolia....very well written and quite funny at times.
In this series, there is a new twist that MaryLu had never touched upon in such a strong way before...spiritual warfare...very intriguing.
Abandoned Memories, book Three, takes us back to the jungles of Brazil and opens up our eyes to some very supernatural events. This book gives us a closer look into the lives of the characters James and Angeline.....but it's the OTHER subject of the book that kept my eyes peeled to the pages. I have read other books by authors that write about spiritual warfare...Frank Peretti and Ted Dekker...and I was so curious as to whether MaryLu Tyndall could pull this off or not. Well, she did! Her attention to detail was just enough to help you envision the scenes that unfolded, but not enough to bore you. No, her book is not as graphic and sinister as those other authors....her book gets the point across without making me wince and close my eyes, as did a few of Ted Dekker's books.
Abandoned Memories is all about realizing that no matter how weak you see yourself, God can help you through anything that comes your way. Your past means nothing if you give your life over to God and let him guide your steps. He will never fail you.
Some of the scenes that played out in this story were so powerful, they gave me goosebumps. And may I say, the Epilogue really brought the whole series to a pleasing end.

Oh, I would be remiss if I did not mention the fact that there are pirates in this book as well....yep, I said pirates!!!! MaryLu book...pirates...go figure. *chuckle*

Angeline Moore is hanging by a thread, because the colony of New Hope which she has helped to establish and fought for, is now under threat by invisible forces. What Angeline is most afraid of is her past catching up to her and she will do anything to keep her secret. James Callaway feels like he is nothing but a failure..as a doctor and as a preacher, and since he came to the colony of New hope Brazil, he feels that this is his last hope. Together he and Angeline discover an ancient tomb as well as a mysterious book. James takes it upon himself to decipher the text, and they are shocked to learn that evil is upon them. Angeline and James need to depend on each other and the colonists as well if they want to come out of this with any success. This is the last book in the Escape to Paradise series.
I had read and reviewed the first two in my 2014 challenge and
I thoroughly enjoyed both. Abandoned Memories a fast paced conclusion book that didn't disappoint! The author once again did a fabulous job with breathtaking detailed descriptions of the Brazilian jungle. A magical story with great characters, some who were sweet and others that were quite unsavory to round it up. A nice ending to a series and a great start to a new book challenge! :D

Abandoned Memories is the third (and last I believe) book in the Escape to Paradise series by Marylu Tyndall.

In here, we finally delve into the life of the mysterious Angeline Moore. And also the rather complex doctor/preacher, James Callaway. Both characters are majorly flawed; yet they truly care about their friends and each other. Determined to destroy an ancient evil, James tries to ignore the whispers from his past. Meanwhile, Angeline is trying to destroy her own past, but is finding it creeps up in the most unlikely places. To make matters worse, a romance is blossoming between the two that simply can’t continue. So were evil beasts roam free, and the dirty past ever looms, will James and Angeline be able to find forgiveness and a path to God’s heart?

While Abandoned Memories all in all was really a fantastic book, it just left me uninterested a many parts. Partly because I wasn’t in a very good reading mood, and partly because… I don’t know. Things become a little repetitive I think.

And I wasn’t exactly sure where Marylu Tyndall was going with all her crazy fantasy ideas smack in the middle of post-Civil War days. That part actually turned out quite well, though. I found myself really fascinated by this spiritual theme, and the truth behind it. Deception, Delusion, Destruction… yeah, those are beasts alright! I wasn’t quite sure about the ending (well, the epilogue was quite interesting and almost funny! *smiles*); but all in all the “fantasy” element of Abandoned Memories was quite powerful and thought-provoking. A great lesson.

This book was rather deep. Some dark, sad issues were kind of sorted through. Because of that, I would caution younger readers on this book. Older teen for sure. Adult would be the preferred audience I think.

So yeah, if you want a historical-romance with a rather startling spiritual side, do pick up the Escape to Paradise series. It’s a great series overall.

MaryLu Tyndall has written an explosive ending to a great series, and it’s an ending that will keep you on the edge of your seat. “Abandoned Memories”, the third and final book in the Escape to Paradise series, completes the story of several homeless Southern Colonists seeking a new place to call home. In the first book, they sail to Brazil in hopes of creating a new Southern Utopia, and the small colony of New Hope is born within its jungles. In this final story, the Colonists are faced with an increase in strange disasters and visions, pirates, and an evil that lurks within a strange temple. And it’s up to one man to solve the writings in an ancient Hebrew book. A book that holds the key to the strange happenings.

James Callaway is Pastor/Doctor to the small colony. Yet he feels like a failure on both counts. He came to New Hope, wanting a new beginning, yet memories from his past constantly remind him that he isn’t worthy of either title. Still, he struggles to begin again, hoping his new beginning will include a courtship with the refined lady, Angeline Moore.

Angeline Moore wants nothing more than to be a real lady like the others, and to live a life of normalcy. But secrets from her past, including hiding out from the law, are an endless reminder that this will never be. Blackmail becomes a threat as one of the colonists recognizes her from her years in the states, keeping her from the happiness she longs for…and a courtship with the finest man she’s ever known, James Calloway.

MaryLu ends the story with a dramatic climax that rivals an Indiana Jones movie and shows how the power of God can overcome the forces of darkness, reminding us that the same power resides in each one of His children. This is truly an enjoyable series that was inspired by actual historical accounts. Great job, MaryLu!

Abandoned Memories ( Escape To Paradise Book 3 )
By: MaryLu Tyndall
Wow, What a book. Abandoned Memories is book three in Escape To Paradise series and what an ending MaryLu Tyndall has penned for us. We are taken back to the jungle of Brazil, a colony of New Hope. This is Angeline and James story. Angeline is running from her past and the law. She has had a rough life and she does not trust God. Her last hope is starting over in the colony. James is a man that is also running from his past. He has failed as doctoring and preaching. He thinks he is a failure to his dead father, who was a preacher. He too is looking to start a new life in the colony. I love the way MaryLu Tyndall brings her characters alive and you feel like you are right there with them. You will meet the same characters that was in the other two books. Let me tell you when you start reading Abandoned Memories It grabs you and does not turn a loose till the last page. In the Brazil jungle there are some evil, supernatural events that takes place. There is evil that has been unleaded, visions that are so real, deaths, and yes pirates. This new life in the jungle is so harden on everyone that some wants to go back to the states .I love the way Ms Tyndall brings spiritual welfare into her stories. Some believe God is not there with them. God is there for us , we just need to listen to him. I loved this whole series and you will too.
I was given a copy of this book for my honest review , and I have given it.

A very satisfying end to an action packed tale. Seriously. This could be a blockbuster movie. What I loved most is how author MaryLu Tyndall weaves an intricate web that ties her characters together.

This book focuses on James and Angeline, sharing their journey of hardships and bad choices. Though fictional, every reader will relate to the consequences sin plays out in our lives.

One of the biggest themes that gets touched on time and time again is the fact that though the characters have made mistakes in their past, change can happen. Real change. It is possible to repent and lead a new life, leaving behind destructive lifestyles.

I especially loved the ending. I knew there would be a happy finale, but I wasn’t certain how it would play out. I was delightfully surprised. And you will be too, but you’ll have to get the book to find out!

This was an exciting an emotional finale to the Escape to Paradise series. These are books that, in my opinion, need to be read as a series and in order. Everything really builds up between books into the incredibly dangerous conclusion.

Abandoned Memories deals with spiritual warfare and that is a very important theme in the book. Another over arching theme is the forgiveness of sins that only God can provide. Each of these characters came to mean a lot to me over the course of the three books and it was gratifying to finally get to read James and Angeline's story. The emotions and troubles between the two were very well written and I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow very much.

Wow! This final book in the series was just “Wow!” More character development and the mysterious storyline from the previous two books are all brought together in a fantastical climax. Spiritual warfare was something I didn’t expect to see in this historical romance novel, the battle of good vs evil, along with so many spiritual truths just knocked this book out of the park…or should I say out of the jungle.

It's 1866, shortly after the Civil War, and the colony of New Hope in Brazil composed of disaffected southerners is still battling the dark spirits who have been chained by God under the temple close to their colony. Two have been loosed already by those among their party who are greedily digging for the buried gold at the temple and two more spirits will be released if they keep digging.

This series is speculative fiction at its best. Although speculative fiction is not one of my favorite genres, I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Tyndall does an excellent job of working the fallen angels who followed Satan into this series. The third book focuses on James and Angeline who both, for various reasons, lived promiscuous lives before they left the US to try to start new lives in Brazil. Both are also trying to find a relationship with God and understand that God has forgiven them for their past lives. Lots of action from start to finish definitely makes this a captivating read.

Definitely recommend this series to speculative fiction readers or those who would like to give it a try.

Thanks to The Book Club Network for the review copy of a book that blew me away. This was the final installment of the Escape to Paradise series. It reminded me of the first few Indiana Jones movies. These settlers were in search of a new beginning. Some wanted an identity do over. There is a huge spiritual battle between good and evil all through this series with the height of the battle in this book.

Each of the books in the series focuses on a couple starting over at New Hope settlement in Brazil. The focus of this novel is on Angeline; a broken woman with a jaded past she wants to remain hidden. She is a tough and courageous woman on the outside. Inside she has an independent spirit, thinks she can handle everything herself but secretly she desires to be loved unconditionally.

James Callaway has failed at two professions Baptist Preacher and Doctor. He is fearful at the sight of blood. This doesn't work if you're the doctor. James fights demons from his past like everyone else seeking refuge in this new colony. Angeline has caught his eye and captured his heart. He hopes to court her properly but she keeps pushing him away. He sees her as a refined young lady and feels unworthy of her love!

Angeline feels James needs a proper-lady, not someone with her past. She tries to stay away from this man but he’s saved her life a few times. It’s kind of hard to avoid someone that keeps coming to your rescue.

Wiley Dodd is an ex-lawman who’s fond of the ladies and is searching for buried treasure. He’s in possession of a treasure map that points to Brazil as the source of his pot of gold. Dodd tries to blackmail Angelina. She’d have to pay a high price in order for him to keep her secrets. How could this be happening? This was her only chance at a new identity.

This book had it all; an Island filled with mysteries, people haunted by visions from the past, extreme natural disasters, all of which threaten the colony’s survival and break their spirits. James anger boiled as he shouts to the others, “Have you considered that perhaps God brought us here to defeat this evil?” Shame burned in his gut that he hadn't thought of this until now. If that was true, God would make a way, wouldn't He?”

They had to act fast. The spiritual battle was raging all around. Could James be right about their mission (fighting evil)? The settlers knew in their gut they’d have to work together to survive. Can these six individuals become God’s mighty warriors used to defeat an evil so hideous it could affect the whole world? Can they overcome their past failures and let God do a new work?

Marylu has written an explosive ending to and amazing series; she pulls out all the stops. This is a page-turning adventure I didn't want to end. These settlers face unbelievable natural disasters, pirates, wolves, explosions, heart-break, visions, the thrill of victory, and more. (How could all that fit in one book? – Trust me it works!) All of this is tied together with a powerful, believable thread of God’s love, grace, and the gift of a new life that is theirs for the taking. It was natural not preachy!

I was on the edge of my seat glued to this story, flipping pages, not reading fast enough for the drama unfolding. This is a thrilling conclusion that doesn't tie things up in neat bow. I liked that. This would make a great book club pick and just plain fun to read. This can be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend reading the whole series to get the most out of this series. This book is a keeper!

A book review of "Abandoned Memories" by MaryLu Tyndall

The third book of MaryLu Tyndall's series "Escape to Paradise" won't disappoint with its incredibly gripping tale. Set in 1866, the newly settled colony of New Hope can't seem to catch a break with disasters striking from all sides, and old memories seeming to take form before their very eyes.

Angeline Moore
Although she seems like the epitome of a perfect lady, something dark and sinister remains hidden from sight. She is running from the past and from the law, and with New Hope being her last hope, Angeline is desperate to reshape who she is before her secrets are found out and she is once again an outcast. With Wiley Dodd's repulsive glances and strange visions from her past, Angeline's new life is threatened more than she thought possible. Will she be able to turn to God and allow His forgiveness to make her clean, or will she be forced to leave her new home behind and return to the filthy streets of her past.

James Callaway
A doctor, a preacher, a drunk? James is hoping to put his past behind him and become the spiritual leader of the colony, but with no other doctor around, he seems to be forced to fill a role that he no longer feels he can do, and his strange reactions to those situations is threatening the good opinions of those in the colony. James is determined to create a utopia in Brazil, an area without immorality that was on every street corner back home, and ruined his life, and he hopes to stay on the right track with Angeline Moore at his side; a refined woman. With the bizarre disasters that keep striking the colony, James is pushed to the limit to discover what spiritual forces are at work before it destroys them all. Will James be able to overcome his fear of doctoring, his fleshly weaknesses, and become the spiritual leader that he has failed to become before?

Angeline's opinion of James is uncertain, but James wants to change that. He doesn't understand her distrust of him, and why she keeps spurring his advances. When her secrets are threatened to be revealed; being the one thing that will turn James away from her once and for all, she resolves to never allow them to become involved, turning him away from her life forever.

Something is strangely amiss in New Hope, and is setting the colonists on edge: haunting visions, crypts with chains beneath an ancient temple, an archaic Hebrew book. With the murder of one of their own, the colonists begin to believe that they have been brought to Brazil to defeat an evil that is wreaking havoc on the colony and the place they have begun to call home. Are they right? Is there an ancient evil, that if released, will destroy the known world?

------------------------------------------

I read MaryLu's latest book in one sitting... literally! I sat down after supper and didn't put it down until I had finished. For some reason all of her novels have affected me this way, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Once again MaryLu has created an amazing read, full of biblical truths and worldly issues that is absent in Christian fiction today. Too often I put down the book, wondering if the main characters are followers of Christ, or they are just Church goers in our world. I want to be challenged in my faith, given an example of how to live, and given biblical examples to compare my life to. I want to read a novel that challenges me to read more of my bible than I do of novels, which is hard to find now-a-days.

------------------------------------------

Killer ants, mysterious wolves, flash floods, and visions seem the last of their worries when the colony is visited by pirates and the lives of those they love have suddenly been threatened with their lives. Definitely a book I recommend to read as you will have a hard time putting it down as you will find yourself relating to those in the book and the struggles they face.

What a wonderful conclusion to this exciting series!! A Definite Must Read!!

MaryLu Tyndall has once again written a book that took my breath away. Being taken back to the lush green jungles of Brazil was something I have looked forward to since I started this fabulous Escape to Paradise series. If you haven't read the two previous ones; Forsaken Dreams and Elusive Hope I would suggest you do so as you will be able to follow the storyline a lot better. Besides you don't want to miss Blake and Eliza, and Magnolia and Hayden's exciting stories.

It seems an evil presence is lurking in this magnificent jungle paradise that is seeking to destroy New Hope's residents. Even James Calloway the runaway minister turned doctor is still having haunting dreams and visions from his past. James feels he is a failure at everything he has attempted in his life and if the people of New Hope were to ever find out about his past they wouldn't want him as their spiritual leader. Thank God that the anonymity of this group of strangers will allow it to stay buried in his past!

Angeline Moore thought when she joined this group of diverse members on their trek to Brazil there was no way anyone of them would know the person she used to be. If only that were true; being constantly haunted by visions of people from her former life has made Angeline realize maybe you can't out run your past after all. Especially when two men from her former life are living with this small group of transplants; one was probably too drunk to remember her and the other is just waiting for the right moment to expose her to all of her new friends!

Angeline knows she should stay away from James but there is something that draws her to him; could it be he is the one man that she can finally trust with her heart? What will happen if her past comes to light? Will James be able to deal with the fact Angeline has not always been the reserved woman she is now?

At the climatic ending of this amazing story Blake, Eliza, Magnolia, Hayden, James and Angeline realize God has led them to Brazil for a purpose far beyond what they could have ever dreamed. These six individuals who thought they were running away from their past were in fact walking into their destiny. Six people who were failures in man's sight were going to become God's mighty warriors used to defeat an evil so horrendous it could affect the whole world.

I have always looked forward to reading Ms. Tyndall's stories. Her flair for details draws me into the story and it's as though I am experiencing it up close and personal. There always seems to be just the right amount of adventure and romance that is tied together with a beautiful thread of God's love. This series was that and so much more. I know that Ms. Tyndall stepped out in faith when she decided to delve more into the spiritual realm in this series; I think she did a tremendous job of showing the fight that goes on around us each and every day; good versus evil. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephesians 6:12 Bravo MaryLu!! JOB WELL DONE!!!

Abandoned Memories, Escape to Paradise book 3***** by MaryLu Tyndall

Abandoned Memories takes us back to New Hope colony in Brazil. This is Angeline Moore and James Callaway's story. As with all the residents of New Hope, they both seek new beginnings in this new community. Angeline is struggling with her past, trying to keep it secret from everyone in the community, certain that if they knew her past her new friends would snub her. However, it seems her past has followed her, one of her “old customers” is here in New Hope. Will he recognize her and will he spread her dark secret around?

James comes to New Hope with a shattered past; seems he has failed at most things including being a preacher and a doctor. Since the war and his great fear of blood, he gave up on being a doctor. But is now a preacher, although a poor one in his eyes. Hoping to keep past failures in the past, he strives to be the spiritual leader this new community needs.

Starting a new community takes a lot of work and dedication, working long hours each day. Just when it looks like they will make it in this strange country, bizarre things begin to happen. Disturbing visions from dead family and friends which seem very real. An ancient temple is discovered which lead to crypts and an archaic Hebrew book which hold clues to the strange happenings. Disaster after disaster threaten to wipe out all they have accomplished in establishing a community, forcing them to start over. Evil lurks in the dark, waiting for the right time to strike and they find themselves in a spiritual battle. If that is not enough, pirates hold them captive on the beach as they hunt for hidden gold treasure in the very crypts where this evil has been released from.

Is there hope for New Hope, even the world, to survive this evil? Placing their trust in God, can their faith and prayers help contain this evil? As their spiritual leader, can James guide them in this spiritual warfare and win against such evil? What of Angeline and James, what does God have planned for them? Can they forgive their pasts, opening their hearts to the love they have for each other?

Abandoned Memories is a great finish to this series. The characters learned much of themselves and each other during their struggle to create a new colony. They must learn to forgive, not only themselves but those who live there as well. Trusting others is important as is trusting God. Even as trials and struggles like they have never experienced come at them from all directions, their faith grows. I love the way MaryLu's characters are realistic, even showing their flaws and how the past can be forgiven. Greed, forgiveness, love, faith and grace flow throughout the story. This story is captivating and draws you into the characters lives.

Praise be to God for all he has done for us and giving MaryLu the idea for these stories! As I read this I kept begging that she would prolong the series and continue with a fourth book! I already knew the next budding relationship I wanted to see grow...*Cough Cough*... Thiago and Sarah... and the whole spiritual war concept was out of this world! I loved how at the end she mentions this being a play off of an actual legend that she heard about from man.

The story was constantly go, go, go- not many moments for the characters to actually take a breather, but the action was SO great. Not that what they went through is something that I would want to experience, because I wouldn't, but it sure made for an intense and tantalizing read.

Would it be bad for me to say that I underestimated this book? That I thought it would fall flat compared to the first two? BOY, was I wrong! The struggles that both James and Angeline went through were so real, and the visions that plagued them were relentless! I loved how this book showed just how far someone can fall if being tempted by the world, but then how with one choice- redemption- everything can change in an instant. Their way of thinking, their confidence, their joy, their forgiveness, and their love for one another!

The ending of the book, the last few chapters, was one of the best endings I have read in a long time! I can't quite describe what I was feeling during those moments I read it There was this part where MaryLu transitioned ingeniously between characters thoughts. The only way I can describe it was like 'head hopping', hopping from one persons thoughts to the others. Normally, I can't stand it when I only get a half page to a page of one characters thoughts, but at the time in the story it was perfect and added an anxiousness to know what was going to happen next. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, even though I was laying down in bed when I read the end.

I can't think of anything else to say, I just hope this review shows the emotion I felt while reading Abandoned Memories!

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:12

Breathtaking. Suspenseful. Terrifying. Beautiful.

There are so many words to describe this book. You know when a book sticks with you? After you read it, you think on it and think on it? That is what this series will do to you.

Abandoned Memories is the third book in the Escape From Paradise series and it is a WHOPPER! Through the series, we get to know a bunch of colonists that left America after the Civil War. They all left for different reasons, but they basically wanted to start a “new south” in Brazil. The cool part? All of this is true! It was the only recorded exodus in the history of America. You should check out this article to find out more about it!!!

In this final installment, the battle with the forces of evil in their town has escalated and they must seek God to fight it. We also get to FINALLY see Angeline’s and James’ stories. They were my favorite from the start!! This book is NOT for the weak of heart. It is surely going to open your eyes to the battle we don’t see. It is a beautiful story of grace and redemption. I wish I could give it 10 stars!! (Looky there! I just did!!).

Bravo, MaryLu! As always, you have given me a book I really enjoy. However, you went above and beyond this time. *still trying to catch my breath*

I really enjoyed Abandoned Memories by MaryLu Tyndall. As the third book in the Escape to Paradise series, this book continues the story of the flawed characters who set sail from southern America to create a utopia in Brazil after losing the Civil War. The same cast of characters play a role in this book, but the two characters who take center stage are Angeline, a woman with a dark past, and James, a doctor-turned-preacher with just as dark a past as hers. Thrown into the mix of haunted characters and wild jungles are also powerfully evil forces set on destroying the fledgling community and unleashing havoc upon the earth.

The supernatural forces at war in the tropical jungle are reminiscent of the TV show, LOST, but the struggles the characters face are spiritual as they struggle to be the people God wants them to become. Along the way, they face secrets, deception, natural disasters, pirates, wolves, visions, and much more. Throughout it all, James and Angeline grow closer, but their love seems destined to be crushed by the world around them and their own past sins.

However, the story’s conclusion is satisfying as Tyndall masterfully weaves together the lives of the colonists and they face off against the forces of evil. The final pages also offer a beautiful conclusion to the struggles of the entire town.

This book (and series) is not one to miss! If you are looking for a book with adventure, suspense, romance, or even a few little scares, then this is the one for you!

MaryLu Tyndall has done it once again! This is a thrillingly perfect conclusion to her Escape to Paradise series. Yet again, she has shown her depth of research, describing a place and time so foreign to us, and yet it felt like I was actually there. Her story is very historically accurate, even while verging on the fantastical side. This story, in fact the whole trilogy, is so well written in its use of multiple genres, there’s a little something for everyone in it: Romance, Adventure, Action, and even a bit of Fantasy while steeped in reality. The story wraps up so nicely, though it takes some edge-of-your-seat reading to get there.
And the characters, oh the characters. James and Angeline are classic MaryLu Tyndall characters. Both are flawed, have had pasts that they try to bury, but each has a deep heart longing to be better. Though the exact circumstances are not usual, it is easy to identify with the characters, longing to be more than their past made them to be. But each has to embark on a journey to learn whether the past defines them, and whether the past can be completely buried. Their romance is so sweet, falling in love even while trying not to. Add a little cat that always seems to find trouble, and allow the adorableness to ensue! This is definitely one of MaryLu Tyndall’s finest works, and one I highly recommend.

MaryLu Tyndall just writes good books. Period. No doubt about it.
She concludes her Escape to Paradise series with this 3rd book and it bows out in a huge way!

We follow Angeline and James's story in this book and also the strange happenings in the jungle that are such a worry to the colonists. In the last book we see some terrible evil unleashed, but there is more to come! Can this group of individuals handle all this evil that races toward them? What if they lose everything? Can they still stand strong in the power of God's might with nothing else?

Angeline has been hurt in a most heinous way and doesn't trust God or even believe He cares about her. James is also laboring under some serious delusions of his own. He can't function as a doctor and as a pastor, he's having trouble here, too. Will these two finally and completely surrender to God's mercy and grace?

One thing I love about MaryLu Tyndall's writing is that she creates characters that are believable, stories that draw the reader in right away, and she doesn't shy away from spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare is real, it exists today in the life of the believer and I welcome its addition to her books.

This was a wonderful read and I'm already looking forward to her next book.

Memories are something we live with, good and bad – but what if these memories are real? Could they cause you to do harm to yourself or even others? Are we ever able to abandon the memories that drag us down? Book III in the Escape to Paradise series will make you consider this question – more than once! Starting anew in a strange land is difficult, but when this is compounded by visions, “natural” disasters, an archaic temple and a Hebrew book, you have riveting fiction at its best. Can this southern Utopia become home to this band of colonists? Grab a coffee, a comfy chair and a bright light and enjoy this ‘don’t read it late at night’ story to see what happens next….

Quite honestly, I had been waiting for this story since the beginning of the series. Angeline's attempted suicide and James' courageous rescue were intriguing foreshadows; these two characters were destined for a great story of their own. And Tyndall delivered.

Each of them came to New Hope carrying their tortured pasts; burdened by the demons of guilt and regret. Afraid to trust and afraid not to; desperately longing for love. The ultimate conclusion to the bizarre spiritual darkness that reeked havoc among the colonists was a fitting undercurrent to this interesting and inspiring climax to the "Escape to Paradise" series.
