When life makes you crazy, reach for the it's cheaper than therapy and you don't need an appointment. Beloved humor author Karen Scalf Linamen is back with her first new women's book in five years, and she's got a stash of sweet treats in her purse to share. Why do women choose comfort food when they are really craving something else? What if they could stop settling for second best and give their souls what they are really seeking? Would they be content? Perhaps they would glean a deeper understanding of their emotions. Most importantly, they might be able to get into their skinny jeans and stay there. With her trademark wit and insight, Karen Linamen helps women everywhere discover what they are really hungering for--and laugh out loud in the process.
Great book... But for some of us... Like myself I just love chocolate. But most of the time I just want a bite. Not the whole bar or bag. Jesus is my comfort. Butt I'm still overweight and I hardly eat.😫
I picked this book up at a free bookstore. The title seemed interesting. The book was ok, I was not expecting it to be as religious as it was. I learned some interesting things but in general I wasn't impressed.
I will admit this up front. I did not actually finish this book. I got about two or three chapters in, realized I was not enjoying the book (or learning anything from it) and did not want to waste my time. I think the thing that disappointed me the most was that this book was a 'christian lit' book in disguise. And second it was not really funny. I don't generally dislike 'christian lit', however I do like to know what I am getting into. Anyhow, I am sure there are women out there who will love this book, but I am not one of them.
Like the stars give it, it was just OK. I was reading this book as I was waiting for gym class and this is a sorta-quasi-self-help-meets a writer who wants to vent about her life and insert life lessons learned throughout. After each chapter, there are questions that you're supposed to have a discussion about. It's not at that level of book, so it's trying to be more than it is. The one thing (there was one!) that I did like was that there were quotes about chocolate laced throughout. If you don't read this book, you're not missing a thing.
Are you in need of a serious laugh? Do you want to feel unalone and understood as a woman who eats (at least sometimes) for reasons other than physical hunger? If so, this is the book for you! I thought it was hilarious and it made me laugh out loud several times.
Karen writes in a very realistic and conversational style that I liked.
If you are in need of serious motivation or serious knowledge on how to lose weight, this is not the book for that.
Facial Tissue Alert: There may be a couple spots here and there that will also make you cry.
I had as many ups and downs with this book as I do mood swings. Started out funny, then she kinda lost me. She asked thoughtful questions, but I didn't know how to answer them and she left no clue for me. Where was the point. But then toward the end of the book, in her chapter called "transformation", at first I thought to myself, geez, I can't believe she's being so blunt and telling this. Then she gave God all the glory of how she overcame and I absolutely loved that chapter.
Great, funny, yet thought provoking read. I feel like though, since I don't own it that the book can not serve it's full purpose for me. But I did like reading through it and pondering the questions in it. It really has a lot of good points. This is another book I wouldn't mind actually owning and having time to read little bits and really think hard about it!
Outstanding! This is the second book I've read by Linaman, and she continues to use humor and her own self-deprecating quips to dive right to the heart of the matter - in this case an unhealthy relationship with food in general. I was challenged, entertained, and humbled by her insights. I highly recommend!
A fun read about chocolate and health that will make you laugh and feel like you're not alone in your struggles to eat right and exercise. It's less of a guide and more like reading a letter from a friend. I enjoyed it, but some of the material is very mature and more fitting for married women, in my personal opinion.
can i give this book NO stars? why does it not say JESUS BOOK all over it?! what a sham!!! not two pages in she starts going on and on about god. ack! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! do not even THINK of picking up this book. so incredibly lame. i have no words.
