The Broken Queen

Rate this book
My Queen,

I'm not who you think I am. We've known each other our whole lives, but you didn't know of the demon that hid beneath my skin. I tried to give you what you needed, but that man was breakable, frail, and weak.

That all changed the moment I thirsted for blood. I broke free of my father's reigns on that dreadful night, but the truth is, I was born to be this. A monster, a fighter and...a King.

You want me to take my rightful place on the throne, but I won't come back willingly. I'll make you beg. I'll make you crumble. And I'll make damn sure you never forget who you belong to. Who my daughter belongs to.

As you read this letter, I know your bones will rattle with fear and excitement. But alas my love, the battle has only begun.

Relay the following message to your fiancé, and expect the unexpected.

The wrath of hell is just the beginning. The King will return and those who are damned will be shown no mercy.

You've declared war and I accept. Justice will be served. And the broken queen will be mine once again.

This story didn’t grab my interest at the onset. Despite starting and recommencing, I could not get into this storyline. It’s partly the writing style — telling with little progression — as well as the timeline starting in the heroine’s childhood. I already anticipate much growth and story development with an already slow day-to-day and telling style.

I could not finish this book despite wanting to.

Edge of My Seat Dark Read!!!!

This book hooked me in immediately and I couldn’t put it down. It has darkness, it has hot steamy scenes and it has an amazing plot! It was a perfect read in my opinion.

Raven has had a very dark and traumatic life, even though she grew up as a princess. The suffering she had to endure, even at a young age did not break her, it made her a b@d@ss and I absolutely adored her. Slade also had his own struggles and when it seemed that life was coming together perfectly, it all fell a part.  Their reunion was complicated, filled with struggles about trust but ultimately, their love persevered and they got their HEA.

If I could give this book 10 stars, I would do so. This story broke my heart and pieced it back together again, many times over. Bravo!

A Broken Queen… Daughter to a Corrupt King… Will “He” Come Back and Save Her?!?!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️
Raven & Slade… what can I say…

The Broken Queen follows the story of Queen Raven and her strength and resilience… even when she felt weak and useless. It flashes back, to different critical points in her life, and forth to the present.

Queen Raven is currently living under the rule of her father, King Lars Alston, who announced her as the new reigning Queen at the funeral of her mother… taking everyone by surprise.

Early on, in one of the flashbacks, it is revealed that King Lars had taken a young Raven, around age 12…I believe, to the dungeon for official Queen Training. Little did she know that this version of training would end up in torture and cruel and unusual punishment… including making her shoot and murder a man he had been torturing and then leaving her there, in the room with the deceased, for days to weeks with no light and no contact to anyone except whomever enacted the torture. Cut up, beaten up by grown men, malnourished and dehydrated… Raven see’s an opportunity to escape and takes it! As she runs, trying to find an escape, she comes across an unlocked door and quickly goes in, shuts the door, and stills her breathing. “Who are you?”… it is there we are introduced to our MMC, Slade. He helps her escape and gets her out and back to her room safe and sound.

Back in present… we learn that Raven and Slade ended up getting close and becoming best friends. Eventually, they became a couple… and we learn about Julianna… their 4 year old daughter.

We learn, during a flash back, of Slade being in prison, falsely accused and eventually exonerated. But during this time he brewed a lot of anger and resentment and hate for Raven and King Lars. He blamed them both.

Through a lot of trials and tribulations… ups and downs, flash backs and present day… this story takes you for a wild, yet satisfying ride! Pay close attention as you read and make sure not to skip over any details… they are all important, trust me! I was mad, sad, happy and more. By the end… it did not leave me wanting. Meaning… all of my questions were answered by the end and epilogue.

Fantastic Harper! Truly!

This was such a captivating read that had me hooked from start to finish. The author has done a fantastic job of creating such a rich and immersive world that fully draws you in.

The plot is well crafted with plenty of twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. It really makes it difficult to put the book down. I enjoyed reading this, I liked most of the characters, there’s obviously a few that I hate 👀 Raven is my favourite, she suffered through so much but was still strong.

Speaking of Raven, she is a complex character that goes through so much trauma but still manages to put on a brave face for her daughter. Raven also goes through significant growth throughout the story and I loved it.

However, the reason this isn’t a full 5 stars is because of the ending, I didn’t like it at all, I can’t say anything because I don’t want to spoil it but I’m not a fan of that type of ending at all, it’s too cliche and overdone, which is why this is a 4 star and not a 5.

Overall, this was a really good book. If you like dark books with twisty turns, a smidge of smut and so much more, you’ll love this!

Very dark second chance romance. Its an interesting take on kings and queens ruling but in modern times. Definitely check trigger warnings. I did enjoy the book but it took me a bit to get into it. The bouncing around of time lines so much isn't my favorite thing. Overall it's a great read

“There are so many times I wanted to walk away, to ruin you. But you always keep me coming back. Goddamn it, Rav. You’re so fucking perfect.”

This was really good. The anticipation of waiting for this was well worth the wait. Slade and Raven have such a unique story. The way their love took hold of me and wouldn’t let me go was beautiful. The twists were definitely twisted. I couldn’t have predicted what was going to happen next. The writing style was good. I really enjoyed it. The chapters were short and easy to follow along with. It was also a fairly quick read. Read the TW’s, otherwise I definitely recommend!

The Broken Queen is a darker and gritty story that quickly pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Raven is a young lady who for all intents and purposes has everything that she could wish for. But, life is not is all that is seen. We journey alongside her and the struggles that she has to deal with. Slade is a mystery that we learn more about as the story progresses. The story is extremely well written and developed. The story is jammed packed with so much drama, a bit of action, and a ton of suspense that has you on the edge of your seat as we try to figure out the mysteries that running through the story. I throughly enjoyed the story and how it ends. This was a fantastic read and definitely will not disappoint.

Are you looking for your King.. or how about the love of your life.. who will do ANYTHING for you and won’t stop till he’s had you?!

Slade King is the man, he’s perfectly imperfect and knows how to make you love him. 👑

The rightful King will never stop protecting his Queen and will make sure anyone who touches her pays. 👑

This book was my first by this Author, I went in blind for the writing style and I will say I rather enjoyed it. I loved the flashbacks mixed with the present storyline. I felt that it gave the story a lot of background to understand what was going on but it didn’t mud up the story. It didn’t come off as fillers. Harper made the flashbacks in a different font style so it showed that this was a flashback.

This book scratch the need for dark and spicy 🌶️ 🖤

I’m so ready for the prequel coming out February 😩

It was great. A mix of now and before, this story has some twists and turns and wickedness that kept me on the edge of my seat. Raven and Slade. Wow. Chemistry. Explosive lines of love and hate, culminating in an impressive ending.

@Harper Ray I just finished your book and loved the flow and how even though there were trials and tribulations but how Slade and Raven stayed true to their love. How justice was served and even though there was time hoping it really flowed very well and able to follow along without getting lost or confused. Thank you for a happily ever after.

The way this book was written left me speechless. It had a very old world feel yet it’s set in modern times with all the bells and whistles. So well executed.

The MMC and FMC were incredible. The way they went from Enemies to lovers was delicious.

Plot - so many ups and downs and so many twists and turns. Lots of suspense and drama. I loved every second.

This book is dark romance and does deal with several very heavy elements. Please read your triggers before diving in.

The Broken Queen is a dark and twisted second chance romance! Queen Raven is resilience and her strength to protect those she loves. Slade King returns to take back what’s his and protect what’s important to him. Very aesthetic, that Raven and Slade story is out and it’s a magnificent novel that was worth the wait! Enjoyed reading and want more of The King and Queen! Highly Recommend!

My Queen,

I know what you think of me, and I want you to know that I'm not like that. I know we've known each other our entire lives, but, I've kept this demon living under my skin hidden, I didn't want you knowing about it. I've always tried to give you everything you wanted and needed, but I don't know what happened, that man, he was so breakable, just so frail and weak.

Everything changed that moment I first thirsted for blood. I had broken free of my father's reigns that God-awful night, but we all know the truth, I was born to be this. I was born to be a monster, a fighter a most of all...a King.

I know that you want me to take my rightful place on the throne I was born to sit on, but you don't understand, that once I sit on it, I'm not going to come back willingly. I know I'm going to end up making you bed, make you crumble. I'm going to ensure that you know exactly who you belong to and you never forget who you belong to. Who exactly my daughter belongs to.

I know that as you read this letter, your bones are going to rattle with both fear and excitement. But, you have to know my love, the battle has only begun.

You need to give the following message to your fiance, and then, my love, expect the unexpected.

The wrath of hell is just the beginning. The King will return and those who are damned will be shown no mercy.

You've declared war and I accept. Justice will be served. And the broken queen will be mine once again.

Your Damned King

The Broken Queen is the first book in the Broken series by Harper Ray. And like all of Harper's books that I've read, this one delivered. I loved every delicious moment of it and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series and find out what happens next and where our characters go from here. But Raven and Slade, oh my, they are a couple to be reckoned with and their resilience and determination is admirable.

The Broken Queen is the story of Queen Raven, and her strength, and resilience is stunning, even when she is at her lowest and feeling weak and useless you can still see just how strong she really is and just how resilient she is. And I love how we get to see flashbacks to the most critical points in Raven's life and then back to the present.

Currently, in the present, we find that Queen Raven lives under the rule of her father King Lars Alston. When her mother passes away, her father announces that Raven is now the new reigning Queen at her mother's funeral. This announcement takes Raven, those around her, and her people by sheer surprise. No one had expected King Lars to announce that his daughter was now the new reigning Queen.

In one of the early flashbacks, we watch as King Lars takes a young Raven who is maybe 12 or so, to the dungeon for her Queen Training. What Raven doesn't know is that in this version of King Lar's version of Queen Training, she would end up having to torture in some very cruel and unusual ways and some difficult punishments. This includes forcing Raven to shoot, no murder the man she had been torturing. Then King Lars turns and leaves Raven in the room with the deceased man for days or maybe weeks, she has no light, no outside contact with anyone with the exception of whomever enacted the torture.

Raven is cut up, beaten by grown men who should know better, malnourished, and she's dehydrated. She finally finds the opportunity to get out of the dungeon and she takes it. While she's trying to escape, she finds an unlocked door and without any hesitation, she enters the room, shuts the door behind her, and tries to quiet her breathing.

“Who are you?” Raven asks realizing that she's not alone in that room. And it's here that we meet our MMC Slade. Slade not only helps Raven escape the dungeons safely he also helps her get back to her room safely.

Returning to the present day, we come to see that Raven and Slade have gotten even closer and actually are the best of friends. Eventually, their friendship moved into them becoming a couple and then we learn about Julianna... Julianna who is their 4-year-old daughter.

During another flashback, this time one of Slade in prison, where he's been falsely accused and he is eventually exonerated. But, while in prison, he builds up a lot of anger and resentment and it is all pointed towards Raven and King Lars. He blames both of them for his imprisonment.

Through this book, we see so many flashbacks, trials, tribulations, ups and downs. We get to go on such a wild ride through this book and yet it is such a gratifying ride. But, you have to pay close attention as you read, you can't skip over any little detail. Everything in this book, even the smallest little detail is important in the grand scheme of things.

There were so many times that I was so mad, sad, happy, and oh so much more. I went through such a roller-coaster of emotions. But that ending, the ending didn't leave me wanting for anything. Any question I may have left unanswered by the end, it was finally answered by the end of the epilogue.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Harper Ray has masterfully crafted another amazing first book in a start of a series and I can't wait to read the next book in the series and see what happens next and see where our characters go from here. This series is going to be a wild ride.

The Broken Queen
Wow, what an intense story. I went in blind. This is a contemporary mafia dark romance with dual POV. Raven is a mafia princess but she did live the pampered and sheltered life like most believed. Not even her doting mother, the Queen, or her one and only friend… her best friend, Slade, knew the horrors that haunt Raven.

Years later, Slade is back for his daughter. But what about her? Is Slade coming back for her too. He was his savior until he left. Well it wasn’t entirely his choosing but he didn’t come back. Why now? All Raven wanted was him to rule by her side as her King. All she has is her their sweet little girl. But her father, the King, is forcing her hand and this time she is powerless. If she doesn’t play nice, they will hurt her daughter.

Raven is a strong MFC that has been repeatedly beaten down. Will Slade come back to be her knight and rescue Raven or will he add to her pain and finally put an end to her suffering? Harper really paints Raven’s pain and suffering. Slade’s anger is revealed slowly over the course of the novel. Despite the anger, mistrust, resentment and secrets, Raven and Slade’s need for each other runs deeper.

There are still a few loose ends or minor details that the might show up in the prequel mentioned at the end. But not sure as a prequel typically is before the events of current book. This book covers most of their history together. Maybe it’ll be a book that has more of Slade’s story (early years and prison years)? That said, as is, this is good as a standalone.

Lastly, thank you to Harper Ray for the eARC which allowed me to read and voluntarily provide an unbiased review.

ARC Review: The Broken Queen by Harper Ray
The Broken Queen by Harper Ray is a dark romance that delves into the life of Raven Alston, the Princess of Amenida. From a young age, Raven endured unimaginable torment at the hands of the King, who believed such treatment would shape her into a great Queen. At just seventeen, following the murder of her mother, Raven was declared the next Queen—but her suffering only intensified.

During one of her torturous experiences as a child, she met Slade. He became a source of comfort when she needed it most. However, after her mother's death, he was taken away, leaving Raven to wait years for his return. When Slade finally reappeared, he brought with him shocking revelations. The question remains: can Slade save the broken queen, or is it too late?

This book presents an intriguing premise that could easily serve as an introduction to a series (though it's unclear if that’s the intention). The narrative primarily focuses on Raven’s brokenness and the events that led her to this point, alternating between past and present to piece together her story. While the romance is mentioned, it isn’t deeply explored in this installment.

Despite its good length, the story felt rushed in places. Some aspects, particularly those that could have been more deeply developed, felt glossed over. However, certain moments stood out—particularly Slade and Raven’s initial meetings and scenes involving the little girl, which were my personal favorites.

In conclusion, The Broken Queen is a story with significant potential, though it leaves room for further exploration and depth.

"That all changed the moment I thirsted for blood. I broke free of my father's reigns on that dreadful night, but the truth is, I was born to be this. A monster, a fighter and...a King."

I've been waiting for a long time for this book and boy was it worth the wait, well worth it. The broken queen will take you a dark and delicious rollercoaster ride that has twists and turns that will leave you begging for more.

"You've declared war and I accept. Justice will be served. And the broken queen will be mine once again."

Once you start you can't put it down, not for a second, your captivated from the start to the end, on the edge of your seat with your heart racing. This story had my emotions all over the place, mad, sad and happy. It's filled with drama, secrets, action, angst, suspense, trauma, spice, lies and so much more. Rowen and Slade I fell in love with them instantly both have been through so much and they have a 4 year old daughter together.

“There are so many times I wanted to walk away, to ruin you. But you always keep me coming back. Goddamn it, Rav. You’re so fucking perfect.”

So much better than I expected! I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about this book at first - but getting to know Raven and meeting Slade - I knew instantly I had to know more. I need their whole story - top to bottom and inside out! So much was said, yet so much wasn't. Ray does a great job giving you just enough detail to fill you while still leaving that need to find out more! The character dynamics are explosive, emotional, and perfectly cultivated. Betrayal lies hate murder and mystery is all Ravens life is - except for her daughter - who brings the light. Slade is anger, vengeance, hurt and the dagger that'll penetrate the darkness! This book is steamy, tension building spice, mysterious and dark with dual timeline, multi-pov, political intrigue, edge of your seat page turning twists and turns you don't expect, and so much more! I can't wait to see where this story goes - it was definitely worth the wait and the read!!

"And the raven will forever be...broken."

I feel every single bit of the previous quote in this story! Raven and Slades journey is absolutely, completely, utterly heartbreaking. Everything Raven endured was at the hands of someone who should have loved her and protected her at all costs and failed her miserably. I absolutely adore Slade. He's possessive, protective and even though I really wanted to throttle him at times, i truly believe he's exactly what Raven needs. Her father, I'd really liked to have been present when he got his comeuppance! This is a highly emotional, intense and dramatic experience that won't be soon forgotten. Keep in mind this is a dark read so be sure to check the trigger warnings. There's lots of topics that may be sensitive to some readers. That being said, I can't wait for The Damned King! If it's anything like The Broken Queen it's going to be a very intense, dramatic, emotionally charged story!

Ravens life consisted of so much pain and torture. The only person she ever loved left her in hell. The question is when he returns what secrets will be revealed and will Raven be saved from her house of horrors.

Wow!! This book was so so good. I’m not sure I even have the words to describe how amazing it was. This is a dark story so beware of the trigger warnings! There are a lot of ups and downs so it is a real roller coaster ride to the end of this story. I loved Raven and Slades characters. They have a well defined back story that continues to reveal secrets throughout the story. I read this book in one sitting because once I started I couldn’t put it down. There is a lot of angst in this story and just waiting to see what’s around the corner. It definitely grabbed me and didn’t let go until the end! I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future!!

The Broken Queen by Harper Ray
👑
Raven is a mess to put it lightly lol. But it was different to see this type of FMC, it went back and forth between past and present to help develop why Raven is the way she is. Her father, the terrible man he is… made her the way she is. Her once source of happiness, Slade, left but when he returns he brings back answers… Slade isn’t a golden retriever by any means more.. morally gray. I do love how they both would do anything to protect their daughter.

I definitely feel like certain areas of the book were rushed and left with questions but it could also be set up to bring a second book. There is some romance but it’s not what stands out in the book. All in all it was a good book, I’d love to seen a second! 3.5/4 ⭐️
