This informational textbook is filled cover to cover with maps, photographs, diagrams, and facts about Alaska’s climate, weather, landscape, indigenous people, history, and the flora & fauna. The fact that the textbook is organized by region, has bolded vocabulary words that are defined in a glossary, and has plenty of real-life photography make this informational text interesting and easy-to-read.
Activity: Would be a great addition to a classroom library as an Alaskan reference.
In this elementary textbook, the reader learns about the landscape, people, and regions of Alaska. In these three sections a variety of information is provided along with sources to provide the feeling of transparency, but many controversial issues are glossed over; for example there is no mention of opposition to the Iditarod by animal rights activists. The authors err on the side of being respectful and don’t consider all viewpoints. No other book is endorsed by the Alaska Government and bodies of education, although it is now seriously outdated.
