The series is so educational and brings out so many different perspectives of the people affected who were living during this painful period of our American history. Sometimes the story was too painful to read but I couldn't put it down for long.

The civil war is raging; Southern citizens are dying of hunger in the streets, while greedy speculators are hoarding the food supply in warehouses offering it at premium rates. All houses are filled with boarders and there is no end in sight for Carrie Borden, a young Southern-Belle who dreams of one day becoming a woman doctor. Something completely unheard of during the year of 1865.

The entire book is like a treasure trove of American history. And not just of the Civil War, we get to learn of the emancipation proclamation as well as the fight for woman’s rights. History is far too interesting, but can sometimes be difficult to digest from the treacherous history books. But you don’t have to worry about boredom coming your way with this tale! Ms. Dye did her research very well, and then thoroughly regurgitated her knowledge into a beautiful story retelling the fictional lives of characters living in a very real world during the year of 1865.

You enter into the personal challenges on both sides of war. In the end, both North and South wanted the same thing: for the war to end. Even though President Lincoln was for the North, the story shows how deeply his assassination affected the people of the South as well. They had been depending on him to bridge the gap of confederates and federals together again. Get ready to enter into Ms. Ginnny Dye’s world, for a beautiful tale of hardship, hope, and love. You will not be disappointed. This is such an inspirational story that every reader will surely love.

Carrie struggles to hold on to hope as the world caves in around her, hanging onto the promise she's been given. She finally gets to reveal the secret she's held close for so long.
Moses is greatly wounded in battle but does survive. Rose continues to thrive in the Contraband Camp teaching black children and adults. She also has a dream come true.
Robert's plantation suffers a severe loss but is saved from burning by a very unlikely source.
Aunt Abby faces danger as she gets more deeply involved with women's rights and spends time in Washington D.C.
The Cromwell Plantation is not destroyed.
The war finally ends but not many people from the North and South are not happy about the way it ends.
I learned a lot about the Civil War, the bitter feelings of the people, the massive dead and wounded, the prison life, starvation, and illness. Black men joined Union forces in the war and also suffered.
It was a terrible time.

Vikki’s Musings

The saga continues in The Last Long Night of the Bregdan Chronicles Book 5. I am sure for the brave men who fought in the Civil War, the entire last year of the war must have felt like one continuous nightmare. What the Rebels endured that last year was beyond anything anyone could have imagined. They suffered one defeat after the other, near starvation, and a brutal winter.

Ms. Dye paints a vivid and graphic picture of the siege of Richmond, along with the fight for the Shenandoah Valley, where Robert’s plantation comes under threat of fire. At times the details are quite painful to read, but this episode is rich with astonishing historical detail. That is what I am enjoying most about this series.

This book opens with Richmond again under attack and Robert Borden in the midst of the fighting. While the south again wins the battle, it is at a heavy cost, one that it can ill afford. Lee sends Robert to the Shenandoah Valley to join Jubal Early. There, another rout occurs that has the Rebels running for their lives, leaving Sherman to burn and destroy one of the last food supplies to Lee’s army.

After the defeat, Robert is given leave to find out if his home is still standing. When he arrives on the hill above his plantation, he watches the Yankees get ready to torch his barns and home with his mother on the front porch. The only thing that saves his plantation is Matthew Justin. He tells the captain in charge that the man who owns the plantation saved his life and helped him escape Libby Prison. This book ends with the surrender at Appomattox and the death of Lincoln.

While I was fascinated by all the history in this episode, I do feel that most of the characters have become a bit sanctimonious. None of them have any flaws. Carrie stands strong in the face of hardship. Her father has accepted her views toward slavery, and Robert is the perfect confederate officer. No one gets angry at their lot in life, it is not very realistic. While there are moments of high drama, the characters accept everything too easily. Some of the sub-plots were unnecessary in my estimation and did not move the story forward.

Nonetheless, I still enjoyed The Last Long Night and will continue reading the rest of the series for the history alone, and I do still like all the characters and must see how they make it through the reconstruction. Happy reading!

Mixed bag

So I have now read five slightly tiresome books detailing every battle of the civil war. The historicity of these books is excellent. That's the good news. I actually liked the characters as well. I'm spite of those two positives the stories are told in some of the worst writing I have ever slogged my way through. Emotion of any kind was followed by it expressed by the phrase "he wiped away his tears," or "the tears streamed down his/ her face." Every page of not every sentence included tears. Seriously. I wanted to throw up by the time I was finished but I was determined to see the war and. Don't waste your time of money. These books are trite and saccharine. There has to be a better written history of this period out there. I will find one someday when I have gotten over this disappointing read in a year or two.

This is the fifth book in the Bregdan Chronicles series. It covers the last year of the Civil War. The loss of life, property and will surrounds the novel's main characters. The reader will become deeply engrossed in the historical accuracy of the battles, troop movements and temperament of the citizens and soldiers.. The vivid descriptions allow the reader to feel that they are in the midst of this historic event that tore apart the country. I look forward to the next novel now that the war has ended. Well done!

This book brings the end to the Civil War and 90 years will go by with racial prejudice then the black population will truly understand freedom. It seems our country is at another crossroad with prejudice. Our only hope is to love one another, as Jesus told us to do. I have so enjoyed this series and it remarkably true to life during that time period. Ms. Dye is a remarkable writer and I recommend this series to anyone wanting to hear the voice of the Civil War.

THE LAST LONG NIGHT CLIMAXES WITH THE DRAMATIC FALL OF RICHMOND AND THE END OF THE CIVIL WAR

I've grown to love Carrie, our heroine, and all the colorful characters of he Bregdan Chronicles. Carrie and her beloved husband, Robert, have survived the Civil War and all of its horrors. I can't wait to read the next volumn about their plantation and surviving Rconstruction in the south.

Once again, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In this year's time span, the War finally ended after Richmond fell. The last year of the war was horrible for the main characters and the nation, but a huge feeling of relief is present for the reader as the war is over. I am on to the next year of their lives...and reconstruction begins.

I am now ready to start book 6 in the series. The characters have survived the war and are now going to begin rebuilding their lives. Lincoln has been assassinated by Booth and the future of the country is now very uncertain.

Finally the civil war ends!

The burning of Atlanta, the capture of Richmond, and the north is much more civilized than the south. Carrie is finally reunited with Robert, Moses, aunt Abby, Mathew, and Rose.

I enjoy the saga, learning more about the Civil War. Some of the themes for the characters are repetitive, but the are positive outlooks, so palatable. Think I will hang in there into Reconstruction in the next book(s) til series ends.

Remarkable Series!

This is truly the best account of the Civil War period I have ever read. Ginny Dye brings it to life through the eyes of both the North and the South. The characters are so real, you feel as if they are family. I can't wait to read the next three books.

I don't know what it is about this series of books but it just grabs you from beginning to end. And I love the fact that I'm learning about the Civil War - more than I ever learned in school. Can't wait to get the next took in the series.

All life matters

I feel like I am reading a more "in depth" version of Gone With the Wind and it is lovely to get lost in a story. It is also an interesting backdrop to all the struggles we find in our country today.
